Suzanne Lundgren
Congratulations to Suzanne
Lundgren…October Volunteer of the
Month! Since joining the Siouxland Center
for Active Generations in 2012, Suzanne
has kept herself very busy. Originally she
joined for the Fitness Room (as many
new members do), but as she toured the
building, she was drawn to the Craft Room,
where the painting classes are held. She felt
this was “right up her alley” until hearing
students Jackie and Darlene, talking about
selling their paintings. At that point
Suzanne thought, “Wow, I don’t belong
in here. They’re too good!” Then she
met George, who she has paired with as a
“social painter”. She even shares front desk
duties (with George), rotating Thursday
mornings, and is one of our regular subs.
Suzanne has also volunteered for helping
with the Fall Follies and birthday parties,
when the painting class takes their turn
hosting. Suzanne stated, “I just love people.
After 35 years of working with the public, it
just doesn’t stop!”
Suzanne, enjoy your personalized
cake, courtesy of Iris of the Pastry Parlor,
and gift certificate from Palmer’s Olde
Tyme Candy Shoppe!
Opportunity for Members
Briar Cliff University social gerontology students would like to offer you an
opportunity to have an oral history recorded. An oral history is a reminiscence of a
person’s life story. Students will work with you to recapture all your favorite memories
into a chronological story. This is your opportunity to document memories from your
childhood to present. The students will compile the interviews and create a final
project consisting of video and paper narratives of your memories.
Volunteers for the project must meet the following requirements:
• Over the age of 65
• Willing to sign an informed consent to allow videotaping and completion
of the assignment
• Available to work with one Briar Cliff student for two or three one-hour
sessions in October or November
• Willing to answer questions across your lifespan
• Willing to share favorite memories including: pictures, poems, songs, etc.
for the narration
• Ready to have fun
Pre-registration deadline is October 7th to pre-register. We need a minimum of
eight participants. Please contact the front desk at (712) 255-1729, for the sign-up sheet

Generations on October 17th, at 8:00 a.m., to sign consent and meet your student
interviewer.

“I’m turning 65—who can help me understand Medicare?” “Where can I
go to find answers about Medicare prescription drug plans?” “Are mammograms
covered by Medicare Part B?” “What is a Medicare Advantage plan?” “My
medications have gotten so expensive, I can’t afford to take them all; is there
any help?”
These questions and more can be answered year-round by any of our
wonderful Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteers
right here at Active Generations, and from October 15 to December 7,
Medicare offers open enrollment for Part D (prescription drug) plans. Please
take advantage of this annual opportunity to review your Medicare Part D
plan.
The Siouxland Center for Active Generations have had three trained and
experienced volunteers to help people navigate Medicare enrollment when
turning 65, as well as the Medicare Part D open enrollment season, which
starts again this month. We have exciting news this year: our long-time
volunteers (Marc Christofferson, Tom Hildebrand, and Harvey Rabe) are
joined by a new team member, Herb Kuehne. So we’ll be able to see even more
people during this year’s open enrollment period!
The more people who check their insurance plans with SHIIP Volunteers,
the more money that’s saved! SHIIP Volunteers saved Siouxlanders over
$76,000 last year! That’s money that stays in individual pocketbooks to be
spent locally instead of going to out-of-state insurance companies. Impressive,
right?
Given what a wonderful program this is, we certainly want to make sure as
many people as possible are aware of it. You can help. Please remind friends
and family about this great service Active Generations provides. If you know
of any church groups, civic organizations, service clubs, or other gatherings at
which SHIIP Volunteer Tom Hildebrand and I can speak, please let us know.
We’re always happy to talk to any group to get the word out and help folks
save money!
So make sure you check your Medicare Part D plan during this open
enrollment season. Remember your prescription needs can change from year
to year and the plans that are offered certainly change yearly, too. Schedule
an appointment by calling Active Generations at (712)255-1729 or just stop by
the Front Desk to sign up.
About SHIIP: Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program
was created by the Iowa Insurance Division in 1990. SHIIP provides free
informational materials as well as one-to-one assistance with questions and
problems related to Medicare benefits, Medicare supplement insurance,
Medicare and insurance claims, plus other related issues. SHIIP does not
recommend insurance companies, plans or agents; the volunteers answer
questions and provide impartial information to help Iowans make wellinformed decisions.

2016 NFL
FOOTBALL
RAFFLE
We are entering the fourth year of
our NFL Football Raffle Fundraiser. It
is the major fundraiser activity for the
Center. Tickets sell for $20 each, and
give participants a chance to win each
week of the 17 week-long NFL football
season. We give over $4,000 of prize
money away!
We
are
encouraging
all
members to:
A. Buy a ticket and sell a ticket to a
friend. If each member did that we
would sell over 2,700 tickets.
B. Become a super salesperson and
check out 10 tickets to sell to friends
and
neighbors.
If
100
of our members answered
the challenge, we would sell
1,000 tickets.
The tickets are an easy way to
support the Center. To buy your
tickets or become a super salesperson,
ask at the front desk, or call
(712) 255-1729.
Fall Follies Thank You
I would like to thank all who helped
make the 2016 Fall Follies, “Around the
World”, the success that it was. Performing
groups on September 10 included Active
Generations Chorus, Assorted Parts
(barbershop quartet), Center Stage
Tappers, Merry Go Rounders, Tai Chi
Group, and the Young at Heart Line
Dancers. Individual performances from
Betty Church, Colleen Mahoney, Dick &
BJ Heitzman, and Double Take were also
enjoyed. Staff managed to engage the
audience in the YMCA-always a favorite.
Special thanks go to our volunteers: Kris
Bergstrom, Liz Blachnik, Helen Eriksen,
Kevin Grieme, Sandy Kuntz, Janette
Linden, Ann Mrla, Bill Mrla, and Sharon
Murphy. We thank KES Productions,
John Dirks (sound technician), Christian
Maaske (videographer), Darrell Strong
(photographer), and the East High School
stage crew. We thank our sponsors:

October 2016
Julie Semple and Velura Stilwell join the Enter 90 group in October at the
Siouxland Center for Active Generations. Other October notable birthdays
include: Francis Foley and Gilbert Persinger.
   
Birthday congratulations to all.
Julie Semple was born October 5, 1926
in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. She has
two brothers and four sisters. Julie lived
on a farm in Saskatchewan about 100
miles east of Edmonton. She attended
country school, Birling #63 in rural
Saskatchewan, Canada. Julie received her
G.E.D. in Sioux City after attending two
years of high school in Canada. She also
completed two college classes in math
and English. As a youngster she enjoyed
reading, playing baseball, and ice skating
in winter.
Julie worked at the Dominion Rubber
Factory during World War II and as a
long distance operator in Sioux City. She
married George Semple in 1946 and has
seven children, fourteen grandchildren,
and eighteen great grandchildren.
Julie volunteered at the treatment
facility at St Joseph Hospital and for a
psychologist’s office and with Hospice.
Julie knits prayer shawls for Hospice,
loves reading, and does a little painting
and a lot of sewing and embroidery.
Julie has observed attitudes changing
across our nation over the years and
lists the loss of connections within
neighborhoods as the biggest example of
that. She notes raising seven wonderful
children as her greatest achievement and
the best years were when her children
were little. Julie says, “Don’t sweat the
small stuff, and let the Lord handle
the big stuff.” Be ready to forgive and
leave the judging to God. Don’t live life
looking back, but remember the good
times and look forward to living each
day the best you can. Julie celebrated her
birthday on July 30th with her children,
extended family, and friends.

Have Tap Shoes – Will Travel
In case you haven’t noticed, the Center Stage Tappers are serious about tap dancing.
Logging many hours each week, practices every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, our
20-member troupe believes in the value music and dance play in the wellness of our
minds, bodies and perspectives.
The culmination of the group’s commitment came to fruition at the 2016 Fall
Follies. Essentially having prepped for this performance all year, they handily performed
complicated and entertaining routines to three tunes: “Teach the World to Sing”, “Dick’s
Polka” and “Travelin’ Man”.
The Tappers enjoy going out into the community, performing at nursing homes,
holiday parties, church luncheons and other community organizations. This past month,
they traveled to the Accura Nursing Home, where they entertained residents with their
numbers.
This dance group is for all ages of women and men. Anyone interested in becoming
a tapper should contact Jane Hunkins at the Center.

Improve Your Concentration
The Merry Go Rounders, our choreographed ballroom dancers, are learning a new
language – the language of round dancing or “Roundish” as some call it. Plain and simple
– round dancing is choreographed ballroom dancing. Like square dancing, it works your
mind, coordinating every step with verbal cues.
“One of the side benefits of round dancing is learning to follow verbal directions
or cues. This helps with concentration, which is good to learn at any age,” said Bruce
Hunkins, new to the Merry Go Rounders. “The most important benefits to joining are
the wonderful companionships and friendships you will develop.”
When you watch round dancers, the image of animated figurines twirling atop a
music box comes to mind. It’s a great way to fine-tune your ballroom dance skills.
If you are interested in joining the Merry Go Rounders, contact BJ
at the Center.

Chorus News
Jam Session News
With the (early) Fall Follies behind us, the Chorus will be able to have a few
sing-outs throughout the rest of the year. We will also be practicing our music
for the Center’s Christmas Party (December 5), and then we will be able to take
a few winter months off.
We especially want to thank Assorted Parts (barbershop quartet) who joined
us in the Follies again this year-which was greatly appreciated! We enjoyed their
songs so much and were happy to overhear their comments regarding ‘enjoying
the Follies’ and ‘it’s a fun day’. This gives us hope that they will sing with us again!
Amen to their comments-we too love the Follies!
~ Virginia Livermore
I participate in as many of the
musical activities as I can in order to
give smiles and get others involved.
Sometimes I may play out of key, forget
the lyrics, or mess up the timing. The
Jam Session is not about being perfect;
it’s about learning, having fun, and
sharing with others…let us share with
you!

Notes
Our Book Club will meet Thursday, October 6, at 10:00 a.m.in the library.
We are reading The Walk by Richard Paul Evans. Keep in mind, we welcome
your book suggestions as well.
Our fall library display is scarecrows. Please come in and take a peek. You
may add to the display for the remainder of the season if you wish.
We had Nicholas Sparks’ most recent book donated to us. I’ve been told
you can’t lay his book, See Me, down for long! As for me…I’m still reading and
enjoying the Sandra Dallas collection.
See you in the library.
*Visit the Book Sale on Tuesday, November 8.
~Helen Eriksen
Gosh, here we are into September,
summer is over, and the (ever popular)
Follies are behind us until next year.
Why are the Follies so successful you
ask…because we have so many talented
people working so hard, sharing the
common goal of a “better than ever”
program! I am so proud that three of
our newer dancers performed one dance
with us and were in the front row. Good
for them!
To celebrate and say “thank you”
to everyone, for all of their hard work
and extra hours put in for practicing
and perfecting the dances, we hosted a
salad and dessert luncheon on Thursday,
September 15. This gave us a good
chance to relax, visit, and enjoy each
other before we start the new dances.
Now is a good time for any interested
members to join the line dancers, as we
begin another fun- filled year!

“Hearing Better Now”
An elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a
specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his
hearing back to full strength.
After a few weeks the man came back to make sure the new
equipment was working properly, which it was.
The hearing specialist said, “It all seems perfect. Your family should be
delighted you can hear everything now.”
“Oh no,” the man responded, “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit
quietly, listening carefully. I’ve changed my will four times!”

Joke
An elderly couple at dinner at another
couple’s house had finished eating,
when their wives left the table, and
went into the kitchen. The two
gentlemen were talking, and one said,
“Last night we went out to a new
restaurant and it was really great. I
would recommend it very highly.”
The other man said, “What is the
name of the restaurant?”
The first man thought and
thought and finally said, “What is
the name of that flower you give to
someone you love? You know... the
one that’s red and has thorns.”
“Do you mean a rose?”
“Yes, that’s the one,” replied the
man.
He then turned towards the
kitchen and yelled, “Rose, what’s the
name of that restaurant we went to
last night?”

such as those considered due to Agent Orange exposure.

service-related.
Non-service Connected Disability Pension – paid to wartime Veterans, with limited income and assets, who
are permanently and totally disabled, not due to a service related condition.
Death Pension – paid to survivors of wartime Veterans with limited income and assets.
VA Healthcare – provided to eligible Veterans who enroll. Enrollment is currently limited, depending on
income and priority groups.

So many members are already
involved with Active Generations in
many, many ways. But here’s another
way to help. We are creating a bank of
trusty volunteers with specific skills and
talents.
•
•
•

•
•
Are you handy with small repairs?
What about small plumbing jobs?
Do you know how to use a floor
buffer? Carpet shampooer?
Are you willing to help weed the
always-growing front garden?
Do you have a truck that could be
used for deliveries? What about
specific tools to loan short-term?
Would you be willing to help paint
walls? Decorate for special events?
Can you make yourself available at
designated times to demonstrate
Fitness Room equipment?
These are just some of the activities
for which we can use help. You may be
able to think of plenty more. We’d love
to build up a list of folks the Center can
call with specific asks. You might not be
available, and we sure understand that,
but it’d be nice to have a list of people we
can call.
So whether you want to be listed as
an “on-call” Library Aide or the go-to
person for replacing toilet tank levers, let
us know you’re out there!
