French Blondes - an Irish view
Enda O’Loughlin
Back in May of this year Des Greene and myself availed of the invite from
Region Aquitaine to travel on the Aquitanima tour for 2013. The tour consisted
of visits to individual farms, the Casteljaloux bull testing station and concluded
with a visit to the Aquitaine Agriculture Fair where there was over a 150 Blonde
cattle on show.
From the first day of the tour it was plain to see that farming in the Aquitaine
Region is on a different scale to many farms in Ireland, with many of the farms
averaging 200 hectares plus. Each farm that we visited was self sufficient as
regards growing all feed for the cattle on farm ie.( silage, hay, barley, wheat and
maize) the aim being trying to keep costs to a minimum. Beef systems on the
farms varied from culling cows after 2-3 calves, veal beef where calves were
sold to local butchers and restaurants. Bull beef was also in practice, a visit to a
fatting unit where bulls where bought at 7-8 months old then allowed a month
between quarantine and adjusting to ab-lib meal feeding. The bulls are then fed
for 90 days with the aim of slaughter at 11-12 months of age, one thing Des and
myself did notice was that the type of bull the fatting unit aimed for was more
a short stockier bull rather than the tall growey Blonde normally associated
French genetics.
22
Organic farming in France is starting to take off, with many government grants
to help with the start up and support, just one of the farms we visited was organic
and it was very interesting to hear and see how farmers deal with the restraints
of farming organically. The one thing all these farms had in common was the
high prices they received for their stock when slaughtered, prices ranged from
5.50 euro/kg to 6 euro for both cull cows and calves.
Another enterprise on every farm was a vineyard, which makes sense giving
that bordeaux is world famous for its wines! Farms either were contracted
to supply to different wine company’s or were making and bottling the wine
themselves, which of course we had to sample on every farm we visited!!
A thing of interest on one of the first farms we attended was a deal struck up
between the farmer and an electricity company, where the farmer supplied the
land and electric company erected a large cattle shed with massive roof space. It
then covered the roof in provolatic panels (electricity producing solar panels),
the farmer then had the use of the shed and his electricity for the farm for free
and electric company sold the excess. Just maybe an example where framers
and the ESB could work together here in Ireland.
From the point of view of the quality of cattle we saw, it was exactly what I
expected, cattle that are geared towards the type of market the French Blonde
farmer is aiming for which in my own opinion is totally different from us in
Ireland.
From the point of view of me as a pedigree Blonde breeder and trying to sell
bulls to the irish suckler or dairy farmer I must stand back look at what type of
cattle does the Irish market require and aim to breed an animal to suit the needs
of that suckler or dairy farmer.
I would like to thank the Irish Blonde Society for giving me the opportunity to
go on that trip, it was very well organised and it being France we didn’t lack for
food or drink!
Just remember BLONDES ARE BETTER!!
