MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of The Winston School San
Antonio is to provide a personalized, college
preparatory education to students with high
potential and identified learning differences.
A Winston School graduate is confident,
well-rounded, and a life-long self advocate.
From the Headmaster
Charles J. Karulak, Ed.D.
Headmaster
It’s hard to believe the school year is over, but we have had a
successful school year and I am proud to say we are building
momentum to add more programs next year.
This year the school has focused on the execution of the Strategic
Plan, specifically in the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, Financial
Resource Development, Student Life, Governance, and Facilities.
One area that has had an immediate impact on our students is
curriculum and instruction. Some of the items in this area that were
initiated this year were the hiring of a speech/language consultant and
a college and career counselor, and implementation of the Strategic
Instruction Model (SIM).
Dr. Julia Eyer, speech and language consultant has served the school
well by working closely with teachers and helping implement SIM. Her major focus has been
working with the teachers on language development which includes student written expression.
When faculty return for in-service in August, two days of in-service will be dedicated to two
more modules of the SIM program; sentence writing and paragraph writing.
The addition of a college and career counselor has provided our students and families with
much needed support as students plan for life after Winston. Julie Holloway met with all upper
school students and their families to begin the transition process. The goal is to eventually meet
with all students in grades 7-12 and their families. She is coordinating the dual credit program
and creating a data base for a new job shadowing program. She has also compiled a handbook
for students and parents that can be used in subsequent years. The students and families have
commented that the addition of this position has alleviated the stress of transition. I thank the
board for allowing me to create this position and also thank Goldsbury Foundation for
funding this program for this year.
Thank you for another great year!
From the desk of Steve Yocham, M.Ed.
Head of Upper School
It has been a great year and we are planning for even greater things. We continue to expand
our Fine Arts program. Fine Arts includes Drama, Art I, and Art II classes. In drama, we
performed two plays, with “All the World’s a Stage,” as the most recent production. The
students designed and created the set, stage, and props, reflecting a high level of professionalism.
In Art I and II, we added clay media with the installation of our kiln. Additionally, the Art and
Anime Club was formed. As part of this new club, the members were selected to show their
anime art piece as part of the McNay Art Museum’s Spotlight Celebration. We look forward to
expanding the program with a jazz band, a drama tech class, and other artistic mediums.

Head of Lower and Middle School
As I write this article, the 2011-2012 school year has come to a close. We have graduated
another class of seniors, held Lower, Middle, and Upper School Awards Ceremonies and said
good-bye to most of the students for the summer. People often say to me, “You must be delighted
that you have summer off and get a break.” Well, we do get a break, but not until we finish
summer school and send out all the progress reports! My point being, Winston is a busy place
during the summer and I love it that way.
Summer school attracts many families who for one reason or another are not able to attend
during the regular school year. It is wonderful to get to know these students and families, and they

2,736.5 service hours. 74 projects. All in 10 months. One could
say the WSSA Rotary Interact Club was a little busy this year.
Recent events they served at included sending members and
teachers to the Susan Komen Race for the Cure, Family Service
Association’s Victims of Crime week, and spending the day with
21 children, most terminally ill from the “Make Dreams Real”
project, for a fun day at Sea World. The “Make Dreams Real”
project was a rewarding experience for Interact Club members. It
was sponsored by the Ciudad Acuna and the Boerne Sunrise Rotary
clubs.
Volume 2 Number 2 of WSSA’s student-run artistic magazine,
Freedom Arts Magazine, was released on May 2, 2012. This
literary creation, envisioned by Robert H., showcases student art,
photographs, short stories, poems and other creative pieces. The front
cover art for this issue features the upper school’s anime art project
that was showcased at the McNay Art Museum’s inaugural Spotlight
Celebration in March 2012. Spotlight is a yearlong salute to a single
work of art in the McNay Art Museum’s collection. Tower of Grace,
photographed by Andrew P., completes the magazine as the back
cover’s featured piece.
80 guests gathered in the Butt Family Library to catch the first
glimpse of the release. Robert H., student editor, reflected on his
vision come to life and named his successor, brother, Christopher H.
Stevie Ray M., Christopher H., Katie C., Joel C., and Dylan H.
read their magazine submissions aloud to their guests, mesmerizing
them with their in-depth
and thoughtful creativity.
Although Robert has
graduated from WSSA, he
and his family have plans
to support Christopher’s
position as the new student
editor as well as the
magazine’s evolution. To

Arts Magazine, contact

Graduating Interact Club members wearing their Rotary International medals
This year may be over but the next group of officers is already
planning for next year. Interact officers for the 2012-2013 school
year are as follows:
• Lindy C., President
• Lisa L., Treasurer
• Marcos K., Vice President
• Sara M., Sergeant at Arms
• Cory W., President-Elect
• Mitchell W., Historian
• Taylor “TJ” G., Secretary
Good news from Rotary International validated the importance
of WSSAs’ part in Rotary. Rotary District 5840 was selected as one
of 15 best districts out of 34,000 districts in the world. WSSA
Rotary Interact Club was awarded “Best in District.” It received the
Rotary International “Change Maker Award” for the fifth year in a
row. Congratulations to WSSA Rotary Interact Club for another
successful year!

sometimes turn into regular year students. Our valedictorian for the
2011-2012 school year is a student who attended summer school for
several summers before enrolling full time in Lower School.
During the summer we also offer classes in volleyball, basketball,
speed, strength and conditioning camp, art, drama, and an afternoon
Eagle Camp packed with fun and field trips. As well, Dr. Terri
Robertson at Trinity University runs a counseling program for
pre-selected students on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for
three weeks.
Next year we will miss two long-time Winston teachers, Mrs. Cathy
Crumpton and Mrs. Pam Wilkinson. Mrs. Crumpton decided to
retire this year. We wish her much happiness and will miss her.
Mrs. Wilkinson has embarked on some new challenges with a school
just starting up in Houston. We appreciate all their years of service to
Winston and will miss them.
As with every school year, the last days of school can be a little
melancholy, but 2012-2013 is rapidly approaching and shaping up to
be another great year with many new students. I wish you a blessed
and relaxing summer before we do it all over again.

ULTIMATE DEBATE THROWDOWN
The WSSA Debate Club, meeting for the last time this school year, enjoyed
rousing debates between Mr. Dillard and Mr. Booker and Tyler G. and Jack S.
The teachers started the debate. With the majority of the students standing
behind Mr. Dillard, it was clear he presented the better argument proving Mr.
Booker was the better teacher. This was a win-win for both teachers. Tyler and
Jack went head to head, deciding who would be crowned “King of Kings” in the
Ultimate Debate Throwdown. After debates about the military and Star Wars,
they battled to a draw, both sharing in the trophy.
The imaginative Blobby Awards were also presented to the club members by
Club President, Kyp C., for the 2011-2012 school year. Awards were handed

WINSTON MEDIA MAKERS
The WSSA gym was transformed into a movie theater for the
8th Annual Digital Media Film Festival on Friday, May 11. Top
student directors in WSSA’s Digital Media II class worked their
digital magic all year long to produce various works of digital
media art. From commercials to movie shorts, WSSA teachers Jill
Ewing and Pat Booker and Upper School Head Steve Yocham had
a tough decision to make as judges.
Josh O. placed third with his submission “Looking for Tattoos
Gone Wrong.” The collaborative efforts of Cory W., Austin G.,
Jack S. and Aaron H. won second place for their short film “The
Last Dr. Pepper.” Christopher H. was awarded first place for his
music video “Bad to the Bone.” The audience cheered and laughed
during the entries and applauded at the end of each entry proving
their enjoyment at the students’ creative media projects.
ART BEYOND THE
WSSA CLASSROOM
Allison T. and Patrick C. have been selected to participate in
the Teen Art Guide (TAG) program at the McNay Museum of Art
for the 2012-2013 school year. TAGs volunteer at the museum
evenings and weekends, learn more about art, and gain community
service hours.
Southwest School of Art (SSA) Summer Art Camp Scholarships
were awarded to upper school student Allison T. and lower school
student Grayson H. SSA’s Summer Art Camp offers one-and
two-week long classes focusing on a specific media, skill or subject.
All classes are taught by professional artists and artist-educators
during both morning and afternoon sessions.
A VISIT WITH THE GOLDEN KING
In early April, Jackie Jaramillo’s and Jennifer Sandoval’s social
studies classes took a field trip to see “Tutankhamun: The Golden King
and the Great Pharaohs” exhibit at The Fine Arts Museum Houston.
Both classes were treated to a chartered bus ride anonymously donated
for the trip, allowing for a comfortable experience. Over 100 ancient
treasures, spanning over 2,000 years of ancient Egyptian history and
including colossal statues of King Tut and his father, Akhenaten,
were on display. Students, parents, and teachers were able to view
approximately 50 actual artifacts from within Tut’s tomb including a
pair of golden sandals, a canopic jar, and his bed. This exhibit will be
permanently displayed in the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), in
Cairo, Egypt which is scheduled to open in 2015.

Director of Admissions
We celebrated the end of the 2011-12 school year with our Class
Day awards program on May 23. The month of May flew by,
but we always need to take the time to pause and recognize our
wonderful students for their many accomplishments. It was a great year
for WSSA with 32 students joining our Winston family after the first
day of school in August. We were busy in the spring with student
visitors and we will be adding many new families when we return to
school on August 20th.
I will be meeting with families and potential students
throughout the summer. We all look forward to welcoming new
students and parents and returning families at our Annual Winston
Family Picnic on August 17. I hope to see you soon!

2012 WSSA GRADUATES: THEY DID IT!
They did it! Diplomas in hand, WSSA seniors crossed the stage,
signifying the culmination of their high school career. Baccalaureate
and Graduation marked the end of their high school experience at
WSSA but the beginning of a new journey.
Dillard, and Alex G. presented a Kindle as their class gift to WSSA.
Kyp C., class Valedictorian, gave an animated Star Wars-inspired
senior message. He likened WSSA to famous Jedi master
Yoda, providing wisdom that helped them overcome their fears
and challenges.
Just two days after finals, seniors attended Baccalaureate at
Northwest Hills United Methodist Church on Friday, May 18, 2012.
Students were recognized by WSSA Administration as having
completed their course of study. Senior sponsor Roger Dillard
addressed the seniors and spoke about the importance of listening as
they start their next phase of life. Parents Jay and Lisa Taylor and
Gabriel and Theresa Martinez spoke to guests about what the WSSA
experience has meant to them over the years. This was a special time
for everyone to reflect on their time together.
Commencement guest speaker was Richard Ojeda, successful
businessman and owner of Black Tie Affairs. He holds the title of
2012 Rey Feo LXIV. A fervent advocator of education, he shared his
message to San Antonio students - Education: Food for the Soul,
Heart and Mind. Ojeda visited more than 100 schools, including
a stop at WSSA in the weeks leading up to FIESTA. Addressing his
own learning disabilities, Ojeda encouraged the students to find their
passion, to persevere, and to reach out to others.
The next morning, students arrived for graduation at the WSSA
campus. Dressed in their caps and gowns, this moment was
memorialized with photography by Life Touch. Graduation was held
in the school gymnasium on May 19. A special video presentation
was shown of the senior class. Senior sponsors, Tricia Chavez and
A post-graduation reception with cake and lemonade was held in
the Butt Family Library for graduates and their guests. We
congratulate our 2012 senior class for successfully accomplishing
their high school career goal. We wish them continued success as they
continue on their journey!

NEXT STOP . . . RETIREMENT
WSSA “VOICES” IN PRINT
Memories and well wishes were
captured on video to bid farewell
to WSSA B-Core teacher Cathy
Crumpton. She is retiring after 15
years at WSSA. A reception was
held for her by WSSA faculty and
staff at LaFonda Oak Hills before
the school year ended. We wish
Cathy and her family a wonderful
retirement experience!
The April 2012 issue of Voices de la Luna, San Antonio’s quarterly
poetry and arts magazine, featured the poems of five upper school
students and one former Winston student-Hannah B., Will G.,
Haley H., Samantha M., Josh P., and Cory W. A collaborative
student poem, “The Wannabe Song,” a riff on poet Catherine
Bowman's poem “I Wanna Be Your Shoebox,” is also featured in the
magazine. The poems were submitted at the invitation of Mr. James
Brandenburg, the President of the Board of Directors for Voices de la
Luna, who was a guest at the Freedom Arts Magazine luncheon this
past December. WSSA poems can be read online at http://www.

FIESTA ROYALTY AT WSSA
The Winston School San Antonio has enjoyed a strong partnership
with the Texas Cavaliers since 2004. We are honored again this year
to be selected as a 2012 Official Texas Cavalier Charity. Due to this
affiliation with FIESTA events, FIESTA Royalty made visits to our
campus to renew and share the FIESTA spirit.
On March 29, El Rey Feo Richard Ojeda visited WSSA for a
rousing time of fiesta spirit! Mr. Ojeda was so excited about being at
WSSA that he bought the two fiesta wreaths, originally for the 2012
Gala and Auction, used to create the festive atmosphere.
Our next visitor stopped by on April 20. Texas Cavalier’s King
Antonio Tommy Green revved up the school just as Fiesta was
kicking off. WSSA students in our after-school program decorated
floats to liven up his visit. These floats were constructed beautifully
from shoe boxes and other items donated to the school.
A limited number of Texas Cavalier River Parade tickets were for
sale to WSSA families and friends. The FIRST EDITION of the
WSSA Fiesta Medal also made its debut.

LUNCH WITH DR. K AT HARD ROCK CAFÉ
The bidding war for live auction item “Lunch with Dr. K at Hard Rock Café” was
intense and exhilarating. Once the bidding wrapped up, three of these packages had been
sold. Kason B., Alec D. and Saion P. can thank their parents for setting them up with a fun
lunch date with Dr. Karulak. Each student brought along three friends in a limo ride to
Hard Rock Café for burgers and fries. This was so popular that there is talk about this as a
live auction item next year. Join WSSA for our annual auction on March 23, 2013 to
see if it makes the list. Perhaps you will be "Headmaster for the Day" and having lunch
with Dr. K?

KINGDOM FOR KIDS XII
ON BOARD
WSSA board, administration, faculty, and staff welcome
Katherine Brown and Tracy Calloway to the WSSA Board for the
2012-2013 school year, effective August 1st.
WSSA has been selected by Kingdom for Kids as its 2013
recipient. This award includes moving the current Lower School
playground down the hill to a new location with installation of
new and recycled materials and equipment. Kingdom for Kids will
raise money from the community to cover the playground costs.
The WSSA community will join Kingdom for Kids for the
weekend installation that culminates in a grand festivity.
A committee of the Rotary Club of San Antonio, Kingdom for
Kids was created by Rick Cavender about 14 years ago. WSSA is
the twelfth recipient of this generous award. More information
will be available in 2013.
THE EAGLE AND STAR SOCIETY
This year WSSA launches The Eagle and Star Society, an initiative aimed at encouraging greater
numbers of the WSSA family to plant seeds for the future via a bequest or other planned gift.
Increasing the ranks of our planned-gift benefactors, and encouraging them to share their plans with us,
can have a transformative effect on WSSA. This will permit us to more accurately plan for the future.
Contact [email protected] or call (210) 615-7485 to receive more information or
to let us know WSSA is already a part of your legacy.

WSSA AUCTION IN ACTION
Guests experienced a blast from the past at WSSA’s Rockin’ Thru
Time Auction and Gala. Decked out in bobbie socks and bell
bottoms, WSSA supporters rocked the night away. Cool cars,
drinks and music set the tone at Don Strange Ranch on March
31, 2012. Cherry classic cars were on display, brought by Hovey
Motor Cars, Dlux Hot Rods, alumnus Richie Flores ’00, and Dr.
Wayne Ehrisman. The Zots, Jonathan and Jude Morales, and the
Krayolas got the crowd singing and dancing throughout the
evening with their energetic and upbeat tunes.
Dancing and good eats weren’t the only things that ruled the
evening. The first-rate selection of silent auction items encouraged
guests to keep close eyes on their bids. Little did they know that
the live auction had more fabulous finds to take home, which
some guests did. With over 450 WSSA enthusiasts in attendance,
over $80,000 was raised for our tuition assistance program and
classroom enhancements.

WINSTON SENIOR RECEIVES
INAUGURAL WALDRON COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
The first recipient of the Karen A. Waldron Outstanding Student
Scholarship is Jarrett T. As seniors prepared for Baccalaureate
and graduation in May, Headmaster Dr. Charles J.
Karulak learned that Dr. Waldron had been planning
a surprise as she revealed her decision to donate a
college scholarship to a deserving WSSA senior.
The criteria for this $1,000 scholarship include
potential as a post-secondary student, determination,
community service, citizenship and character. The
scholarship will be applied to tuition and fees at
Schreiner University, in Kerrville, where Jarrett will
be attending this fall to become an English teacher.
Head of Upper School, Steve Yocham expressed,
“This scholarship could not have gone to a more
deserving person.” Jarrett has been a member of the
National Honor Society, the Beta Club, track team, cross-country
team and has earned the designation of Eagle Scout. He received
Outstanding Student awards in English, Algebra, Geometry and
World Geography.
Karen Waldron, Ph.D., Professor of Education
Emerita and former Director of Special Education at
Trinity University 28 years, served as a Founding
Board member of The Winston School San Antonio
from 1985 - 1987. Subsequently, she served for years
on the Medical Scientific Advisory Committee
and directed the Trinity – Winston Professional
Development School collaborative. In 2005, she
presented the Keynote Address at the Learning
Disabilities Symposium and was the Luncheon
Speaker for the 2012 Symposium. She remains a
loyal advocate and friend of WSSA.
WSSA congratulates Jarrett on his successes and
also extends our gratitude to Dr. Waldron for her continued support.
WSSA RECEIVES $200,000
ANONYMOUS GIFT
TAP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
WSSA is the recipient of an anonymous major gift to be applied
to our 2012-2013 academic school year needs. This gift was given
by a San Antonio family in appreciation of the school’s success in
providing a nurturing environment for students with learning
differences to receive a quality education.
Mrs. Janet McNutt, through the Bill and Sally McNutt
Foundation, provides a generous gift to WSSA for our Tuition
Assistance Program (TAP). In April, she met with Dr. Karulak and
several parents and students who benefit from her generosity. This
informal meeting emphasized the academic progress and future
plans of WSSA students participating in this program.
