President Rita’s Message
-Happy Holidays to all of you, winter certainly has arrived with all this rain. It’s time to bring out the
crock pot for some good old fashioned soups on these miserable days!
Our activity committee has some wonderful activities scheduled for us. November 18th was our Annual
Membership meeting, and Retiree Benefit Fair. Details from this past event are later in the newsletter.
The activity committee chaired by Bill McCormick and Sharon Butterfield are busy planning
events for next year. Save the date, I do know a Valentine’s luncheon at the Children’s Farm Home Café
is planned for February 12, 2016 at 11:30; you will not want to miss this no host social luncheon.
As our year draws to a close, I’d like to thank all the Board members for their service this year. Everyone has done an
excellent job and their contributions are greatly appreciated. The board members and officers for next year were
announced at the Holiday Party. The boards of directors for 2016 are listed on page 2 of this newsletter. Terri Avery has
decided to resign from the board so she has been replaced with Evelyn Martin. Our thanks go out to Terri for doing an
excellent job for sending cards for our Sunshine Club (sickness/just because and sympathy). Welcome to the board
Evelyn, we are delighted to have her join our board!
As I do in each newsletter, I encourage you to participate in Club activities, and if you have something you think will be
an interesting activity for the club, just let a member of the activity committee know.
We are always looking for associate board members, please consider running for a 2 year term. It is not demanding and
will not interfere with any of your other retirement activities. We schedule a once a month meeting on the first
Wednesday of the month for an hour and a half. It’s always nice to have new associated and board members with fresh
new ideas as some of us have been recycled for several terms.

HPREC President
Neta Martin-Couron turns “99”
Neta celebrated her 99th birthday on Sunday, December 6, 2015. What a birthday party she
had complete with a full buffet dinner and 115 HPREC friends singing Happy Birthday to
her! Neta had an interesting career at HP, being hired in 1977 at the age of 60, .wow; those
were the “good old days.” Neta retired in 1994 after 17 years in production.
Neta is a native Oregonian, born in Roseburg. Neta had a very interesting life over the years,
she and her husband raised three children, she has 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
They lived on 3 acres and raised chickens, vegetables and were gentle gardeners selling their
seasonal vegetables and fruits to the local grocery stores.
Neta’s looking forward to next year, the “big one!” Neta feels very blessed to have so many
good friends, in the HPREC club and out. She wishes a Merry Christmas to all her friends!

Welcome New Members
HPREC of Oregon always welcomes new members and returning past members. HPREC members recruit your friends that recently
or are soon to leave HP and had at least 10 years of employment. They do not need to retire, that is not a requirement of our club and
with the last wave of EER employees leaving HP in November perhaps you know someone who would like to join. It is amazing how
many former employees come to a Retiree Fair or Craft Fair or just run across a former employee and they have never heard of our
HPREC Club, we need to get the word out to our friends,

Income Tax Assistance for 2015 Taxes Prepared Free of Charge
It’s that time of year when several of our members devote endless hours as client facilitators and
counselors preparing income tax returns free of charge for low and moderate income people of all ages with
emphasis on seniors in Linn and Benton Counties.
Sponsored by the IRS and AARP trained volunteers will be preparing Federal and State Income tax returns
again this year. The Oregon Administration Specialist is Rita Pinard and the District Coordinator is Alice
Unger. There are four locations each in Benton and Linn County this year; twenty new volunteers are being
trained for the upcoming tax season, they will add to the returning 55 counselors. The local sponsors are
Oregon State Credit Union, RSVP, the Senior Centers in Corvallis, Albany, Lebanon; Libraries in Philomath,
Corvallis, Albany, and the Elks Lodge in Sweet Home and Corvallis. All returns are prepared on computers
using sophisticated software provided by the IRS. This service includes free electronic filing.
The Tax Aide information number for Corvallis is (541) 602-5829. A chart showing times and places will
be shown in a future newsletter.

She started out as a production worker forming component leads on an assembly line in California. She
came to Oregon with HP in 1976. She married her husband Jerry in 1981. Over the years she increased
her contribution to HP, becoming a production manager, also a procurement group manager, and in her
final years with HP, she was a Director hosting IT functions.
She retired at 55, and redirected her energy to designing and building a retirement home. She was a very active
contributor to local charity organizations. She also loved to travel, and in the course of her lifetime visited over 30

moved to Texas and later to Southern California. In high school, Andy played football, basketball and
baseball and was drafted in the sixth round of the major league baseball draft by the Texas Rangers.
Instead of pursuing a professional baseball career, he chose to pursue a college education and ended up
in Corvallis, OR where he was recruited to play football and baseball as an OSU Beaver. Although
Andy did not graduate from OSU, but in 1978 graduated from Whitworth College with a degree in
psychology. It was at Whitworth where he met his “Tarr Baby”, Lori. In October of 1981, Andy and
Lori were married. In 1983 Andy received his MBA from the University of Oregon. A year later
began his career at HP working in the California Bay Area. In 1987 Andy and his family moved to
Corvallis where they raised their 4 boys. After 24 years with HP, Andy finished his career at Oregon State where he
retired in 2014. Andy used his 60 years of life intentionally and purposely to make a meaningful, lasting impact on those
around him. Andy passed away on September 1, 2015, a memorial was held for Andy at the Cavalry Chapel in Corvallis..

been married 45 years. Garner was born in Meridian MS but spent most of his childhood in Daphne and Fairhope AL. He
attended the University of Alabama, graduating with a BS in metallurgical engineering. He attended Purdue University
and graduated with a MS in materials science. He came to Oregon in 1980 to work at the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Albany,
where he worked until his retirement. After Ellen retired, they moved from Albany to Yachats, OR. Garner enjoyed
volunteering. In Albany, he was an active member in the Greater Albany Rotary club and volunteered at the Albany

Debit and Credit Card Changes are Coming
Earlier this year, we shared the news that we’ll reissue all member debit and credit cards to be MasterCard Chip
and PIN enabled cards. We’re excited to offer you:
 Increased card security
 Enhanced benefits programs
 Better credit card rewards programs
STRONGER SECURITY
Today, our cards use a mag stripe, which is easily compromised by resourceful fraudsters. To help thwart fraud,
Visa and MasterCard strongly recommend financial institutions transition to EMV chip cards by October this
year. First Tech has sent their cards out and you should have received your cards by now.

EMV Chip enabled cards
Although chip enabled cards are already in use worldwide, they are new here in the U.S. These cards contain a
chip aimed at reducing fraud. You’ll begin to see new card transaction terminals in merchants throughout the
U.S.
Enhanced benefits and rewards
We’re updating our credit and debit card programs. We’re happy to pass along more robust benefit programs
and enriched rewards programs. If you are a current card holder, you will receive more information soon. Learn

Update on Past Activities
(To view all the photos taken go to http://oregon.hpretirees.org - recent activities).
August 1, 2015- HPREC Annual Picnic was held in the B3 Cafeteria. The weather was around
100 degrees so we obtained permission to hold our picnic in a nice air conditioned setting!. The picnic
was well attended with 123 signing up. HP donated a Stream tablet won by Donna Mann and HPREC donated an HP
printer won by Howard Barrar. Other lucky winners were: Young Lauw, Bullet Blender; Dean Carlozzi, Home Music
System; Cliff Maier, Reciprocating Saw; Frank Nitcher, Shop-Vac; Jack Carlozzi, Cordless Drill; Ginny Taylor,
Convection Countertop Oven; Craig Maze, Electric Grill to name a few of the winners. The picnic also had a lot of nice
bingo prizes won by various members.
The biggest issue we had this year at our picnic was the food, the alphabet had way too may desserts and not enough
salads, veggies and fruits. We had 34 desserts signed up and 12 salads. Perhaps our group believes in the saying, “eat
desserts first then the meal.” The afternoon ended with us spooning up 4 gallons of ice cream for A & W Root Beer floats
which were enjoyed by everyone

December 6, 2015 HPREC Holiday Party -Valley Catering, Adair Village Clubhouse
Another year and 114 members and guests enjoyed another successful HPREC Holiday Party. The Co-chairs for this
event were Teri Avery and Jeanne Reinke with their committee members: Ken Parker, Judy York and Sharon Butterfield.
They chose a wonderful menu of smoky glazed salmon, or pork tenderloin, a romaine lettuce salad, roasted seasonal
vegetables, roasted red potatoes and for dessert cheesecake with a choice of berry sauce or chocolate drizzle.
This year we offered a no host bar featuring wine and beer although rumor has it some members enjoyed a martini! This
seemed to be a good addition so as long as we have our party at Valley Catering and they have the bar and servers we will
likely have this service available.
Ken Parker and Jeanne Reinke provided the entertainment, and of course everyone had to put their cell phone away for the
trivia and cross word challenges. There would be no looking the answers up on “Google” according to Ken. Some of the
questions were rather difficult unless you watch and “remember” Christmas/Holiday movies or are good at trivia.
The afternoon was spent specializing with friends, singing happy birthday to Neta, drawing door/raffle prizes, trivia and
just having a good time! HP Inc. donated a printer and our club bought a laptop computer to give away for the door
prizes. HPREC also gathered and delivered 192# of food for the Linn-Benton Food Share, they were very grateful.

December 13, 2015 HPREC Social outing – Singing in the Rain” at the Albany Community Theater
HPREC had 22 members attend The Greatest Movie Musical of all time. Every unforgettable scene, song, and dance was
accounted for, including the show-stopping title number, complete with an onstage rainstorm! Hilarious situations,
snappy dialogue, and a hit-parade score of Hollywood standards made Singing in the Rain the perfect entertainment for
any fan of the golden age of movie musicals; especially on a very rainy day here in the Valley. After the play 14 went to
dinner at Frankie’s in North Albany, many had not been there before and were very impressed, excellent food!.
