In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught….
Whether you’re in a diocese that celebrates Ascension or the last Sunday of Easter today, we begin with a story
from the annals of the early Church. Luke wrote Acts of the Apostles not as a news report but more like a reminiscence
of a quickly fading first generation. Luke wasn’t on the scene for most of the action, but he wanted to capture the spirit
of that exhilarating primary age for later readers. He didn’t write for the folks who were there. Luke wrote Acts for us.
So whether you’re hearing about Jesus returning to His Father today, or Stephen glancing up to see that celestial reunion
on his way to join Them through martyrdom, the common thread is that remarkable proximity between the acts
of ordinary people and our God who loves, witnesses, and rescues.
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
Today is World Communications Day. Since 1967 when Pope Paul VI launched the first teaching on social communications,
the Church has recognized the significance and value of social media. Last year, Pope Francis explored how communication
involves not just systems as expansive as the worldwide web but also the intimate and familiar chatter exchanged
within families. Thanks to social media platforms, we now live in a “culture of encounter,” a world chat room into which
we’re all invited. But if this unprecedented access diminishes the actual encounters we have with each other
under the same roof, in neighborhoods, schoolyards, or - heaven help us - at Mass, then maybe it’s time
to put the media down and look someone who loves us right in the eye.
As Jesus blessed them He parted from them and was taken up to heaven.
On this day of upward glances, we also celebrate Mother’s Day. Some mothers are kept way up there on a pedestal.
Others come crashing down to earth sooner or later. Yet the term “ascension” seems applicable to the role of motherhood:
could any vocation be nobler, higher, or inhabit more mental and emotional real estate than the idea of our mothers?
Present or absent, living or deceased, makes no difference to their significance for us. Though we emerge from their bodies
in a matter of months, our mothers never leave us entirely. Julian of Norwich understood this when she called Jesus
our mother. As He prays and hopes for our unity at the last supper, or blesses His dear ones on His way home to God,
Jesus does what every good mother does. He makes sure that His own will have everything they need to meet their destiny.

My dear Parishioners,
Grace and Peace from God our Father through Jesus be with you, and especially to all mothers and to women who in some ways
cared for children not their own. Happy Mothers’ Day!
This is also the weekend that we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, being
part of the western section of the country that observes it on Sunday rather than Thursday. The Ascension of the Lord into Heaven
gives us hope as it did to Jesus’ apostles and disciples by promising them and us that He will be with us all the time until the end of
the age. Also, Jesus promised His apostles and us today that He would go to the Father ahead of us so that He could prepare a
place for you and me. It is this second promise that we celebrate today. Jesus has ascended to heaven, and through His Spirit,
He is preparing us for the day when He comes again in glory.
The ascended Christ has also empowered His church to fulfill its mission. We need to trust Him and have a great confidence in Him,
no matter how bleak things look. Jesus is in heaven. He is interceding for us. He is supreme over all creation. And best of all, He will
never, ever abandon us. Isn’t that comforting? That is truly hopeful!
That same message of hope is offered to us by Pope Francis in His Exhortation “Amoris Laetitia” On Love in the Family. The Pope
continues to call the Church to be a sign of hope, mercy and encouragement for families of all shapes and sizes. Building on the
deliberations of the two recent synods on the family, our Pope offers wisdom and practical help to guide us as we support and
strengthen today’s family. The Pope wants us to read this groundbreaking work on modern family life by guiding us through:
a. Scripture – what we can learn from Biblical families and relationships with God and each other.
b. Reality – the experiences and challenges we face in today’s world.
c. Tradition – essential aspects of Church teaching on marriage and families.
d. Love – what it means for all our relationships.
e. Ministry – Pope Francis offers pastoral perspectives for helping build strong families.
f. Spirituality – the expression of the Gospel message in our relationships.
Let me end this letter with another hopeful note sharing this parable of the four candles:
In a room there were four candles burning. The ambiance was so soft you could hear them talking. The first candle said, “I am
PEACE, however nobody can keep me lit. I believe I will go out.” Its flame rapidly diminishes and goes out completely. The second
one says, “I am FAITH. Most of all, I am no longer indispensable, so it does not make any sense that I stay lit any longer.” When it
finished talking, a breeze softly blew on it putting it out. Sadly, the third candle spoke in its turn. “I am LOVE. I have not gotten the
strength to stay lit. People put me aside and don’t understand my importance. They even forget to love those who are nearest to
them.” And waiting no longer it goes out. Suddenly a child entered the room and saw three candles not burning. “Why are you not
burning? You are supposed to stay lit till the end.” Saying this, the child began to cry. Then the fourth candle said, “Don’t cry my
child, and don’t be afraid, while I am still burning we can re-light the other candles, I am HOPE.” With shining eyes, the child took the
candle of Hope and lit the other candles. The flame of HOPE should never go out from our life and that each of us can maintain
HOPE, FAITH, PEACE and LOVE. (Unknown Author)
To all the mothers, on behalf of all the children, we are all appreciative and grateful for all those times you made sacrifices for us
along with our dads so that we can have better lives. No words can fully express how thankful we are but only to love you even more
and show that by our loving care for you, by helping you more around the house, and most of all, by giving you our profound respect.
Happy Mothers’ Day once again!
Love,
Fr. Riz

Know the signs of human trafficking - Human trafficking claims many young victims every year, and often, we
see these victims in our daily lives. It is important to recognize the signs of abuse and to know how to interact
with possible victims. The best way to start a tough conversation with teens who may be at risk is simply to talk
to them—ask what’s going on in their lives, and if they are okay. Signs of abuse include suspicious or
inexplicable injuries, avoidance, or reliance on an older “friend.” For more information please visit http://

Do you want to become a Catholic,
with reception of the Sacraments of
Initiation at Easter Vigil, April 15, 2017?
Contact the Faith Formation Office by
Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2016.
 Do you, or does an adult you know, want to begin the journey into full
participation in the Catholic faith community?
If never baptized, do you want to receive the Sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation and 1st Eucharist?
If already baptized, do you want to become a Catholic and receive the
Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions,
then R.C.I.A is for you!
R.C.I.A. stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.
It serves both unbaptized adults (catechumens) who want to receive Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist, and those who are baptized in other Christian
denominations (candidates) and want to receive Confirmation and Eucharist
in the Catholic Church.
The initiation of the unbaptized (catechumens) is a gradual process, taking place
within the community of the faithful, celebrated by significant liturgical rituals
throughout the process, with Baptism, Confirmation and
1st Eucharist celebrated at the Easter Vigil.
The initiation of already baptized Christians (candidates) can take place any
time the candidate and pastor feel the candidate is ready.
R.C.I.A. involves small-group reflections on Sunday readings, instruction on
the core beliefs and practices of the Catholic Faith, all in preparation
for full participation in the Catholic Church.
If you would like to know more, please call the Office of Faith Formation
at (805) 526-0680, or come in person to Claver Coffeehouse,
7pm in the Parish Center on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month.
