5 tips for protecting kids with food allergies at school
(BPT) - If it seems like lifethreatening food allergies
are more common than
they were when you were
a kid, you're not imagining
it. The number of children
with
food
allergies
increased by nearly 50 percent between 1997 and
2011, according to a study
conducted by the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention
(CDC).
Researchers are working to
discover why food allergies
are on the rise in developed countries around the
world.
In 2011, Congress passed
the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act to improve
food safety in the United
States. This act shifted the
focus of food safety from
response to prevention.
The shift resulted in new
guidelines for parents and
educators to manage the
risks of food allergies and
severe allergic reactions.
There might not be a cure
for food allergies, but there
are some steps you can
take to ensure your child is
safe at school:
Form a partnership with
teachers and school staff.
Communication is key
when it comes to managing allergy risks. Introduce
yourself to all the adults
your child sees every day,
from teachers and nurses
to bus drivers, cafeteria
staff and administrators.
There are often misconceptions surrounding food
allergies, so take this time
to clear those up. Provide
specific information about
your child's needs and how
each staff member can
support them each day, as
well as in an emergency
situation.
Have a collection of go-to
safe snacks.
Food allergies can be
scary, but don't let food
become an object of fear in
your family. Allergies create an opportunity to teach
your kids about safe eating.
Find safe snacks to put in
your child's lunchbox or
backpack, like Snyder's of
Hanover pretzels, which
are now made in a peanutfree facility and safe for
kids with peanut allergies.
Kids with allergies often
feel left out during times
with class treats, but stor-
ing wholesome and tasty
options like these in their
locker is the perfect solution.
Teach your child to manage their allergies.
Encourage your child to
advocate for his or herself
when it comes to prevention. Find books about food
allergies to read with
younger children and help
them practice with autoinjector trainers. When
they're ready, teach them
to read food labels, speak
up for themselves at
school, avoid non-labeled
or homemade foods and
recognize the symptoms of
a reaction.
Have your child wear a
medical ID.
You can keep your kids
safe when you're around,
but when they're at school,
camp or even a friend's
house, you can't always
protect them. Wearing a
medical ID helps kids
remember exactly what
they're allergic to. And if
they have a reaction when
you're not there, a medical
ID lets others know what to
do by listing your contact
information and instructing
to use an auto-injector or
call 911.
Have a plan for emergencies.
You can download the
Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis
Emergency Care Plan from
the Food Allergy Research
and Education website.
This plan outlines recommended treatment in case
of an allergic reaction and
has space for specific doctor notes and emergency
contact information. It also
includes allergens, symptoms and easy-to-follow
treatment instructions.
Print out several copies of
your plan and keep them in
an easily accessible place.
Let your physician, school
staff and other parents
know it is available.

a hearty italian dinner: Beef cannelloni and wine
(StatePoint) This fall, be inspired by the warm, welcoming
style of Italian entertaining: turn to the kitchen, the heart of
the home.
“Italian gatherings are relaxing and fun, so don’t worry
about décor or timing the main course to the minute guests
arrive,” says Emilia Nardi, owner of the award-wining Brunello producer Tenute Silvio Nardi winery of Montalcino in Tuscany. “It is about bringing family and friends together to have
a good time. Dinners should be a joy for both the guests and
the hosts.”
An avid cook and host, Emilia Nardi recommends having
the wine and appetizers ready for when guests arrive. Wine
should be opened to breathe.
A Caprese salad of freshly harvested ingredients is a hearty
selection. A charcuterie board, while simple to prep, will
keep guests appeased as the main course cooks. Pair these
delicious bites with a structured wine.
For the main course, Emilia Nardi, suggests taking a page
from her family cookbook with this recipe for Beef Cannelloni:
Pasta Ingredients:
• 4 eggs
• 2 3/4 cups flour
• 2 pinches of salt
• 2 tsp of extra virgin olive oil
Pasta Instructions:
Add to mixer. Knead by hand for 10 minutes and then cover in olive oil and wrap in saran wrap. Let it rest for one hour.
Spread it out by hand and cut it in a square (around 15cm
per 15cm).
Mixture and Sauce Ingredients:
• 4 cups of tomato pasta sauce
• 2 large onions, finely chopped
• 1 celery stalk in big chops
• 3 carrots in big chops
• 6 Tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil
• 1 lb. of lean beef chops
• 2/3 lb. of lean pork chops
• 1/2 lb. gr turkey breast chops
• 1/2 tsp of nutmeg
• 2 cups of grated parmigiana cheese
• 4 1/3 cups béchamel sauce
• 1/2 a lemon grated peel
• Aromatic bunch made of rosemary, sage and parsley, tied
together.
Instructions:
• Cover the pan with olive oil to brown the onions. Add
the meat, carrots, celery, the aromatic bunch and hot tomato
sauce. Add salt and pepper.
• Cook over low heat for one hour. Remove the aromatic
bunch and celery. Then remove carrots and meat and put it
into the mixer, adding béchamel sauce, nutmeg, lemon peel
and parmigiana. Mix it well.
• In boiling water, let a square of pasta be briefly immersed
in the water and then put it on a rag. Put the mixture in the
middle for the length of the pasta square and roll it up.
• In a baking tray, add béchamel sauce and tomato passata, lay down the cannelloni on it, one beside the other and
then cover again with béchamel, tomato sauce, and sprinkle
with parmigiana.
• Bake for 40 minutes at medium-high temperature.
She recommends pairing the dish with the Tenute Silvio
Nardi Rosso di Montalcino 2014 (SRP: $25.99), a fruit-forward medium-bodied wine with a velvety texture or the
Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (SRP $68.99), a full-bodied wine
that offers intense aromas and flavors of red berries offset by
notes of leather and incense.

10 packing hacks to streamline your move
(BPT) - Moving brings a
mix of emotions. Excitement about living in a new
home is paired with angst
and anxiety about the actual moving process. The
most dreaded task is the
one that takes the most
time: packing.
The boxes, the bubble
wrap, the labels - oh my!
Packing can be chaotic and
overwhelming. Fortunately

make packing for a move
fast, easy and efficient.
Creative packing supplies: Boxes, packing tape
and bubble wrap are essential, but by creatively
using what you already
have, you'll cut costs and
waste. Try blankets and

for boxes when it comes to
light goods.
Label wisely: Mark each
box with your name, information about its contents

constant communication
and connectivity, it can be
difficult to take a break.
But drive time is when your
phone should take a backseat to safety, say experts.
“You don’t need to be
texting to be distracted
by your phone,” says Kelly
Nantel, vice president of
communications and advocacy at the National Safety
Council. “Even hands-free
talking is a major distraction.”
Research indicates drivers using handheld and
hands-free phones only
see about 50 percent of
all the information in their
driving environment. This
phenomenon is known as
“inattention
blindness,”
similar to tunnel vision.
While multitasking is
valued in today’s culture,
researchers find that the
human brain doesn’t actually perform two tasks at
the same time but rather
switches attention between tasks. At your desk,
this can be an effective and
efficient way to work, but
behind the wheel, “multitasking” can be deadly.
From checking GPS, to
firing up a drive time playlist, there are countless
smartphone-related reasons why people take their
mind off the road. And
newer in-vehicle systems
allow drivers to call, text,
email, update social media
and browse the Internet,
despite research showing
these systems cause distraction that can linger af-
ter the driver finishes the
task.
One of the major reasons drivers today are so
distracted is one of the
most surprising -- pressure
from your family. Indeed 82
percent of Americans feels
their family pressures them
the most -- above friends
or employers -- to drive
distracted, according to a
recent NSC survey.
“It is a sad irony that the
people we love are actually jeopardizing our safety
the most,” says Nantel. “If
you really care, don’t call
to say, ‘I love you,’ instead
encourage your family to
set everything else aside,
disconnect and focus only
on the road.”
To prioritize safety and
reduce your risk of being
involved in a crash, turn
your commute into “me
time,” and your car into a
safe sanctuary. The National Safety Council is offering
some tips to take back your
drive.
• Turn off your phone
when you get in the car.
• Tell your family (and
anyone else expecting to
hear from you) that you
will be driving and will call
or text them when you are
parked at your destination.
• Send emails and texts
before you start driving.
• Return the favor. When
friends, family or colleagues are driving, refrain
from placing distracting
calls or sending texts.
Driver distractions have
joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in
fatal and serious injury
crashes. In recent years,
thousands of people have
died in crashes when drivers used cell phones.
The issue has started
capturing the attention of
political leaders nationwide
and some are taking action
to improve laws that promote safe driving, though
no law goes far enough,
say safety experts, because
no law prohibits hands-free

Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) today
announced the launch of a
new mobile-friendly Spanish-language financial goal
calculator on MassMutual.
com/es/Latino.
The mobile-friendly calculator was developed to
address the top four financial concerns of consumers found in MassMutual's
State of the Hispanic American Family study: income,
savings, retirement and
debt. The calculator addresses each financial concern by helping consumers
set a goal for each using
the concept of 5-10-15-20
as a guideline:
*"5": Increasing your annual income by at least 5%
each year.
*"10": Saving at least
10% of your net annual income.
*"15": Targeting a retirement nest egg of about 15
times your annual income.
*"20": Planning to have
your debt (excluding your
mortgage) paid down within 20 years.
"We often hear customers say, 'I don't even know
where to begin,' when it
comes to planning for their
financial futures," says David Hufnagel, Latino mar-
ket director, MassMutual.
"The calculator is a simple
first step in creating a road
map for the financial future
of families and their loved
ones."
Just a few minutes and
basic financial numbers are
needed to begin. Users will
be guided through a series
of simple questions to help
address financial concerns
and will receive insights on
what their financial future
may look like if they set and achieve - their goals,
all of which can be printed
out or emailed for later reference and use. As an example, if a person has "decrease my debt" as a goal,
the tool will offer possible
next steps.
"We are committed to
helping the Latino community plan for their future by
providing easy access to financial education resources," says Hufnagel. "From
wherever they login, resources to help them plan
for their financial futures
are at their fingertips."

space where you used to just
store your car, lawn mower,
power tools, bikes, bats and
boxes of things you wore in
the 90s. But to say a garage is
only for storage is like saying
a truck is only for hauling
dressers and box springs.
From game room to workshop, man cave to hangout your garage has the potential

Toughen up your walls
