The Quaint Alpine Village of Gaylord
Natural Beauty
Family time or tee time,summer
is spectacular in Gaylord.
Located in the heart of Michigan’s Northern Lower
Peninsula, right off Interstate-75, Gaylord is a beautiful
woods-and-water paradise where long, temperate
summer days invite family leisure time and recreation.
The fun in Gaylord extends far beyond our golf courses.
We welcome visitors with interests of all sorts—from foodies
and boutique shoppers to fishermen and festival goers.
6
And minutes from downtown, the Pigeon River State
Forest, east of Vanderbilt, is a 98,000-acre outdoor
recreation corridor for hiking, biking, horseback riding
and backpacking. The Green Timbers special use area is a
6,300 acre parcel along the Sturgeon River, closed to all
motor vehicles, making it a prime location for fly fishing
and wildlife viewing.
Natural beauty. Small town charm. Miles and miles of
fairways dotted with emerald greens. Gaylord’s got it all!
Field Tip: 6 Great Reasons to Visit Gaylord
1 • 90 Lakes: Boat, jet ski, waterski, fish, swim or just kick-back on one
of the pristine lakes that dot the Gaylord Area, many with easy
public access.
2 • The Elk Herd: Spot one of the nation’s largest wild elk herds in the
forestlands east of I-75. Sightings are fun and frequent.
3 • Shopping & Dining: From unique downtown boutiques to big box
retailers, options abound. Foodies will find fabulous restaurants and a
few diners, too!
4 • Alpenfest - July 12th–16th: Loosen your lederhosen and celebrate
Gaylord’s alpine heritage with food, music and good ol’ family
festival fun.
5 • North Central State Trail: Hike or bike the crown jewel of Michigan’s
rails-to-trails system. This trail winds 61 miles—from Gaylord to
Mackinaw City—through some of the prettiest and most picturesque
landscape in the North.
6 • Winter Wonderland: Wear your woolies and enjoy Mother Nature’s
gift... an annual snowfall of 180 inches. Miles of cross country ski,
snowshoe and snowmobile trails await you.

www.gaylordgolfmecca.com
Black Bear’s most popular feature is the par 3 warm-up
hole #19, which is played before you go to #1. Voted
one of the area’s best golf courses five years in a row,
Black Bear offers some of the most diversified terrain
in the state by combining Scottish-links-style holes
with traditional tree-lined Northern Michigan hardwood
holes. A refreshing choice for players looking for that
“one-of-a-kind” Northern Michigan golfing experience.
The course, combined with above and beyond service,
makes Black Bear a “must play.” Group rates, corporate
outings and events are welcome. 2008/2009 Golf Digest
rated it four stars.

Black Forest course has been garnering awards since its
opening in 1992. Designed by internationally renowned
architect Tom Doak, Black Forest features beautiful
terrain, spectacular bunkering and diabolical greens. Its
natural beauty and outstanding conditioning make Black
Forest a world-class golf experience. From the black tees,
Black Forest is one of Michigan’s toughest courses, yet
with five sets of tee markers, it is playable by all levels
of golfers. Consistently ranked as one of the top public
courses in Michigan, Black Forest is a “must play” on
any trip to Gaylord. Black Forest, Wilderness Valley and

The sister course to the nationally acclaimed Black
Forest, Wilderness Valley is the perfect complement.
Shorter and less difficult, Wilderness Valley is still sporty
and challenging. Designed by former Ryder Cup team
member Al Watrous, Wilderness Valley features gently
rolling terrain, large greens and beautiful scenery. One
of Gaylord’s long-established and most popular courses,
Wilderness Valley is also one of Gaylord’s best values.

Par 72
Par 72
Black Lake Golf Club is an 18-hole public golf course
designed by nationally acclaimed architect Rees Jones, most
known for his restoration work on many US Open courses.
Jones utilized every feature found on the property, from
cranberry bogs to a small sand quarry, to produce what may
be his most charming design yet. Black Lake has received
many national awards and rankings. In 2009, Golf Digest
awarded Black Lake #34 on its prestigious list of “America’s
100 Greatest Public Courses.” Golf Digest also ranked Black
Lake as the #9 “Best Value” from the Top 100 list. Always
in pristine condition, Black Lake is a championship design
that offers golfers of all abilities an enjoyable round of golf.
From Gaylord, take I-75 N to Exit 310 Indian River, take M-68
east, turn left and head north on F-05 (Black River Road) to
entrance on left side.

The award winning Elk Ridge, designed by Jerry
Matthews, is located on the eastern outskirts of the
Mecca. This is a big rolling course with elevation changes,
magnificent stands of red and white pines, wetlands,
streams and tough undulating greens. Elk Ridge has been
honored by Golf Digest as second best in the country
among new public courses. Elk Ridge also has received
“One of America’s Top 75 Upscale Public Courses” and
“One of the Best Places to Play for Women” by Golf
Digest Women Magazine. Sculpted out of Northern
Michigan woodlands, Elk Ridge is home to some of
Michigan’s largest elk herds. From Gaylord, take M-32
east to Atlanta, and M-33 north six miles to Rouse Road.
Golf Digest rated it four-and-a-half stars.

Garland Fountains
Garland Monarch
Par 72
Par 72
The longest, single-span, log bridge in the world
connects the Fountains course over County Road 489.
Fountains was carved out of a hardwood forest to
produce a popular combination of six Par 5s, 4s & 3s.
Surprisingly, the finishing hole is a Par 3, which plays
over water accented by fountains. Take M-32 east from
Gaylord to the Lewiston sign at CR 491; turn right then
travel south ten miles.
The Monarch, at 7188 yards from the back tees, is
the ultimate test of golf, yet it can be played very
comfortably from the other three sets of tees. At
Garland, the natural beauty of the terrain is matched by
meticulous care and attention to detail. The main lodge
and clubhouse are a centerpiece of the rustic elegance
that showcases Northern Michigan as it was meant to be.
Take M-32 east from Gaylord to the Lewiston sign at CR
491; turn right then travel south ten miles.

Garland Reflections
Garland Swampfire
Par 72
Par 72
Reflections may be the secret gem of Garland. At 6,400
yards, Reflections proves a course does not have to be
long to be demanding. Its combination of six Par 5s, 4s,
and 3s harmonizes beautifully with the natural environment
of pine forest, lakes and streams. Nesting bald eagles,
which may be seen on the back nine, call Reflections
home. Take M-32 east from Gaylord to the Lewiston sign at
CR 491; turn right then travel south ten miles.
Woods, water and wildlife are the setting for this
championship course. Swampfire, 6,854 yards from
the tips, is a shot-makers delight. You will have to
choose when to lay up off the tee, when to go for it
on the Par 5s and be decisive in your club selection
on the Par 3s. Take M-32 east from Gaylord to the
Lewiston sign at CR 491; turn right then travel south
ten miles.

Gaylord Country Club is one of Northern Michigan’s
oldest clubs. Established in 1924, the club moved to its
new location just west of Gaylord in 1975. This semiprivate course meanders through hills and hardwoods,
and features private club conditions. Unlike today’s
modern courses, which take more time to play, Gaylord
Country Club is a classic parkland design. You’ll find
close proximity from greens to tees and a variety of holes
designed to allow players use of every club in their bags.
The course features four sets of tees, making it playable
for all abilities. Gaylord Country Club is one of the few
semi-private clubs in Northern Michigan allowing public
play anytime. We invite you to become a member for
a day and experience the game of golf the way it was
meant to be.

Field Notes
A few fun game formats to play with your best
golf friends.
Got a big golf tale to tell? Write it down. Because if it’s in
print, it must be true.
The Scramble:
COURSE NAME:
A scramble is usually played with four-person teams, but
two-person scrambles are possible, too. At a two-person
scramble, handicaps are usually applied; at a four-person
scramble, handicaps are usually not applied.
In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The
best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their
second shots from that spot. The best of the second
shots is determined, then all play their third shots from
that spot and so on until the ball is holed.
DATE OF OUTING:
NAME OF PLAYERS IN YOUR PARTY:
A shamble combines elements of a scramble with
elements of stroke play. Like in a scramble, all members
of a team (usually four) tee off and the best ball of the
four tee shots is selected. All players move their balls
to the spot of the best ball. From this point, the hole is
played out at stroke play, with all members of the team
playing their own ball into the hole.

ADDITIONAL FIELD NOTES:
Best Ball:
Best ball can be played using two-, three- or four-person
teams. Each player on the team plays his or her own
golf ball throughout the round, and on each hole the
low score— or “best ball”—of the group serves as the
team score.
Best ball is usually played as stroke play with the total
score added up at the end of the round.
Four Ball:
22
All four players play their own ball throughout; at
the end of each hole, the low score between the two
partners on each team is that team’s score.
Fig.1The Lost Ball Hound
(canis absentis aeris)
Observation Notes:
Risking life and limb and often holding up a
fast-moving foursome, the ball
hound is resistant to admitting loss
and taking a stroke. The hound will
often ferret out lost balls in deep
rough areas and shallow water
hazards. Shown here, knee deep in it.
Profile and common characteristics of “The Lost Ball Hound”:
Balls of every brand name and color
Likes: Dislikes: Range balls, muck, an empty ball washer
Commonly found: Wading in water, hacking about in the heather
Common call:
“Leave no blade of grass unturned.”

Designed by William H. Diddle, one of the foremost
architects of his time, The Classic is a traditional club
layout and the founding course of the Gaylord Golf
Mecca. The Classic is a very playable course for all skill
levels. From the 9th hole, it offers breathtaking views
overlooking the Sturgeon River Valley, nature’s backdrop
to the famed Otsego Ski Club. You’re sure to enjoy a fun
round and arguably some of the best greens found in
Northern Michigan. Located in the heart of the Otsego
Club & Resort community, just one mile east of downtown
Gaylord off M-32. Otsego Club and Resort joins Wilderness
Valley as an Osprey Recreational Property.

Carved from 1,100 acres of hardwood forest, The
Tribute is Otsego Club’s flagship golf course. Designed
by Rick Robbins and PGA Tour veteran and NBC golf
analyst Gary Koch, The Tribute offers an unparallel golf
experience. From 20-mile vista views to an up-close and
personal tour of the Sturgeon River Valley basin, this
is what Northern Michigan golf is all about. Spacious
greens, expert bunkering, multiple tee locations and
dramatic elevation changes make this a challenging and
memorable experience. The Otsego Club & Resort offers
a conference center, hotel and condominium suites,
practice range and pro shop as well as the award-winning
Pontresina Ristorante and Duck Blind Grille. Otsego
Club and Resort joins Wilderness Valley as an Osprey
Recreational Property.

Tom Fazio, America’s number one golf course architect in
the 1990s, brought his talent and vision to Treetops after
significant urging from Rick Smith. The Fazio Premier
blends in perfectly with the undulating terrain in Northern
Michigan. It is also the only Tom Fazio-designed course in
Michigan. Many have described Premier as user friendly
with its wide, bowl-shaped fairways and large undulating
greens. The Premier also features one of the finest
collections of short par 4s found anywhere. The Fazio
Premier still ranks among Golfweek’s list of the
“Top 100 Resort Courses.”

The Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Masterpiece opened in 1987
to fuel Northern Michigan’s golf boom. The Masterpiece
has earned the reputation as a challenging course that
is as much fun to look at as it is to play. Still garnering
accolades, in 2007, Great Lakes Golf Magazine ranked
the Jones Masterpiece third best course in the Midwest
behind only Whistling Straits and Arcadia Bluffs. The
Masterpiece features dramatic elevation changes, a wide
variety of design features and breathtaking views of the
Pigeon River Valley. The famed Par 3 sixth inspired Mr.
Jones to coin the name Treetops ... and the rest is history.

The Rick Smith Signature course, designed by the
teaching guru and resort owner, Rick Smith, combines
the natural beauty of Northern Michigan with unique
design features one might find in Ireland. Men and
women alike have deemed the Smith Signature their
favorite at the resort. In 2007, the “Signature” debuted
on Golf for Women’s list of the Top 50 Courses at #29
due to its beauty and playability. The stunning layout has
13 elevated tees and provides views of up to 30 miles.
The diversity of its five tee choices will give golfers of all
abilities a fair test of golf.
The newest addition to the Treetops collection is the Rick
Smith Tradition. The course has a classic look of one that
was built long ago and conditions reminiscent of a private
country club. With short distances from green to tee and
traversing gentle terrain, golfers will be given the option
of riding or walking. In 2008, the Tradition joined the
other courses at Treetops on Golf Digest’s list of 4 1/2-star
courses. The Smith “Tradition” is possibly the Treetops’
best kept secret and arguably Northern Michigan’s best
golfing value.
