Brazilian-born composer Clarice Assad carries a substantial family
musical legacy. Her father and uncle, Sergio and Odair Assad, are
internationally celebrated guitarists who perform and record as
the Assad Brothers. Her aunt is the equally well-known
singer/songwriter Badi Assad.
But Clarice has made a name in her own right by diving into the
classical music idiom, bringing in the Brazilian jazz that's in her
bones as an artist.
"I have become a musician because of them," she said of her
famous relatives, "so, of course, the influence is really great all
around."

'Dreamscapes' is part of the Cabrillo
Festival's Music at...
The Assad family instrument has always been the classical guitar but her father pushed Clarice to
take up piano. "That was the best thing for me in retrospect because it helped me develop more as
a composer/arranger."
Assad comes to the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music for the third time as a composer-inresidence to present her latest work, "Dreamscapes. The piece will be part of the Cabrillo Festival's
Music at the Mission concerts on Aug. 10. It will also be a showcase for the skills of violinst Nadja
Salerno-Sonnenberg.

"Nadja is one of the most amazing musicians I have ever met. She has incredible musical instincts
and there is nothing that she cannot do technically on the instrument. Plus, she has a unique
sound that can be distinguished immediately."
"Dreamscapes" was inspired by Assad's own exploration into the nature of REM sleep. The piece,
she said, depicts a dream turning into a nightmare.

"I used to be quite scared in the nighttime alone
with my wild imagination," she said. "So I
started a journal using vivid memories of my
dreams, which I used to create sketches of the
piece."
Later, she consciously experienced a
phenomenon known as "sleep paralysis," a
common occurrence in which the body is no
longer able to move in certain stages of sleep. "I
had no idea what had happened to me, so I

started doing some research. This helped me
finish the piece, make it more coherent and give
it a storyline."
