Truk Lagoon
Protected from wind and ocean swells, this
lagoon has often been described as a placid
lake in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
The island of Truk, also known as Chuuk,
offers the greatest concentration of wrecks
anywhere in the world. The number, variety
and size of the wrecks and the spectacular
marine life that grows on them are
unequalled. Truk Lagoon’s sunken fleet
has become the standard by which all
other wreck dives are measured.
In February of 1944, Japan’s
fortress of Truk Lagoon was
attacked by Task Force 58 – a
group of nine aircraft carriers and
related cruisers, destroyers and
subs. During two days and one
night, planes from these aircraft
carriers conducted continuous
bombing, strafing and torpedo runs
on ships anchored in the lagoon.
More than 400 Japanese planes
were wiped out and some 50-60 ships
were believed sunk. Those two days of
devastating air assault created what is today
known as the “Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon.”
During the past 60+ years, these wrecks
remained undisturbed on the bottom of the
lagoon. A combination of unusually warm
tropical water, prolific marine life and lagoon
currents have served as a natural incubator –
transforming these lifeless hulks into
magnificently beautiful artificial reefs.
Some of these shipwrecks have greater
concentrations of soft corals, hard corals,
sponges and marine life than the neighboring
coral reefs. These wrecks are truly the most
beautiful in the world.
Of the 50-60 ships believed to have been
sunk in Truk Lagoon, not all have been found.
Of the 35 that have been charted and
explored, two dozen are dived regularly. Each
wreck has its own personality and treasure of
cargo. One could devote a lifetime to diving
these wrecks and still not see all of them.

Micronesia is made up of over two
thousand tiny tropical islands
covering three million square miles of
ocean. From the world’s greatest wreck
diving in Truk, to the majestic mantas of
Yap, and the beautiful coral reefs of
Palau, it is an island nation of great
diversity. Palau was named the #1
Underwater Wonder of the World by
CEDAM, an organization of divers,
marine scientists and conservationists,
for the diversity of its dazzling and
unique underwater realm.
Micronesia is rich in culture, dating
back thousands of years. Much of its
heritage can be found on any given
island. A visit to the ancient and
mysterious lost cities of Nan Madol in
Pohnpei and the Lelu Ruins, a stone city
in Kosrae, are spectacular journeys not
to be missed. Visitors can count stone
money on Yap, hike to the Stone Faces of
Palau and view towering Latte Stones
scattered throughout the Marianas
Islands. The oceans of Micronesia touch
everything and everyone in a special
way, whether you swim, snorkel, dive,
kayak, sail or fish. Come be touched by
its waters and culture.

Palau
by
Teri Cos
Palau was selected as “The Number One
Underwater Wonder of the World” by CEDAM,
an organization of divers, marine scientists
and conservationists. This incredible cluster
of islands and giant lagoon offer the most
diverse range of diving experiences, plus
several one-of-a-kind attractions that cannot
be matched anywhere else in the world.
Inside the lagoon is a glistening flat ocean
surface, sprinkled with some 328 “Rock
Islands”. These unusual formations are odd
looking, mushroom shaped islands topped
with a thick green growth of tropical foliage.
Small marine organisms have spent
centuries boring into the limestone base of
these islands, sculpting them into fantasy
mushrooms.
Clustered together, the Rock Islands form
lovely and intricate passageways through
which boats can motor at full speed. This is
one of the most popular tours in Palau.
Beneath the surface, Palau has become
world renowned for its spectacular drop-offs.
Vertical walls begin knee deep, at a
ridiculous depth of two feet, and plummet
straight down to more than 1,000 feet. Diving
these magnificent formations is an
exhilarating experience, yet Palau offers
much, much more.
A landlocked marine lake offers a bizarre
opportunity to snorkel with a million nonstinging jellyfish. There are blue holes, giant
undersea tunnels, stalactite filled caves and
a dozen more oddities that make Palau
Lagoon different from any other place in
the world.
Wall Diving
Blue Corner
One of Palau’s most exciting sites, the wall
makes a 90 degree turn, forming a sharp
point that juts out into the open sea. Divers
hook into the substrate at the top of the wall
to enjoy the show and then drift along the
face of this vertical wall, letting the current
carry them around the point. It is a high
voltage dive during which divers encounter
packs of gray reef sharks swimming in the
current, moving very close to the wall. This
spot is famous for its blue marlin, manta rays
and schools of dogtooth tuna, Pacific
barracuda and other pelagics.
Jellyfish Lake
There is no question, Jellyfish Lake in
Palau is one of the strangest bodies of water
in the marine world. Snorkelers can reach
out and touch these jellyfish without injury,
even gathering them in their arms.
Millions of years ago, a geologic upheaval
caused a small portion of Palau’s lagoon to
become trapped in a landlocked lake in the
center of one of the Rock Islands. To reach
this lake, visitors must hike over a ridge and
descend into a valley surrounded by jungle
foliage. Although the lake is surrounded by
high ridges on all sides, it is fed seawater
through a maze of cracks and fissures in the
island’s limestone base.
The main attraction of this prehistoric lake
is the million or more non-stinging jellyfish
that inhabit it. Instead of stinging and feeding
upon stunned fish, these former predators
have become undersea farmers – growing
their own food through photosynthesis.
Chandelier Cave
One of Palau’s most amazing experiences
is the exploration of a dazzling underwater
cavern and cave system.
Chandelier Cave is located on the
island of Ngarol. The entrance to this
labyrinth is a 10 foot wide tunnel
opening in the side of the Rock
Island. The top of the tunnel is
approximately 15 feet below the
surface. This cave system is
comprised of five or six distinct
chambers that penetrate 400
feet or more at shallow depths
under the island. Several of the
chambers are filled with
magnificently colored flowstones
and crystalline stalactites.
b
y
Palau is probably best known for its
spectacular wall diving. These vertical
drop-offs are along the outside edges of the
barrier reef and islands. The wall dives
provide an opportunity to enjoy 200 foot
visibility and a spectacular array of colorful
marine life. Some of the deep gorgonian fans
reach gargantuan proportions – 15 feet tall
and 10 feet wide!

Yap
TRADERS’ RIDGE RESORT
The island culture of Yap is intact, with
the Yapese still living the lifestyle of their
forefathers. The stone money is a good
example. Yap is the only place in the
world where huge, carved stones
became a traditional form of money.
Stone money may date back 1,800
years, when ancient Yapese navigators sailed their outrigger canoes
across hundreds of miles of open
ocean, exploring neighboring islands.
On Palau, they discovered caves containing a sparkling light brown mineral
known as crystalline calcite. Using hand
tools made of shells and sticks, they
quarried and sculpted stone disks ranging from
2 to 12 feet in diameter.

Ro

T
Each piece has its own legend and value directly
related to the degree of difficulty in obtaining it. Stone money
banks lie deep in the jungle, where villagers store their wealth in neat rows, propped up in
impressive displays.
A trip to the outlying districts is like stepping back in time. There are men’s meeting houses
built of huge logs and palm thatch. The biggest treat for a visitor is a traditional Yapese stick
dance where islanders perform this ancient art in their finest traditional dress.
Unique to Micronesia, this property offers
the amenities of a four-star boutique
resort while preserving the rich cultural
traditions found in Yap. The on-site dive
operation, Traders Ridge Dive Center,
offers a full range of dive excursions and
valet dive service, including towels and
refreshments served on board and a
maximum of 10 divers per boat. After
diving, guests can enjoy drinks at the
poolside bar, gourmet dining in the
restaurant, or a traditional Yapese massage. Authentic handmade arts and

Manta Rays
Yap is the unchallenged leader of Manta Ray diving. Divers visiting this remote paradise
encounter mantas on more dives, and more mantas per dive, than anywhere else in the world.
Most of the manta encounters occur in depths of 25 to 50 feet, usually inside channels that
lead from the lagoon to the open sea. The mantas often line up single file in groups of four to

Ulithi

Chris Simmon
One of life’s great joys is exploring a
healthy, thriving coral reef. Perhaps the
single greatest attraction of diving the Ulithi
Atoll is an opportunity to dive the untouched
reefs in the world’s fourth largest lagoon.
Miles of virgin, unspoiled, remote coral
reef islands with white beaches, secluded
lagoons and clear waters that teem with
colorful tropical fish, are waiting to be
discovered by underwater pioneers. At some
unnamed sites you may be one of the first
divers ever to visit.
USS Mississinewa
In 1945, the USS Mississinewa was sunk
by a Japanese suicide submarine and has
been lost ever since. In 2001, she was located by a group of divers including a staff
member of Trip-N-Tour Pacific. To this date,
only a handful of divers have visited her.
You Are Invited
The chiefs of this atoll have extended an
invitation to all divers to explore their wrecks,
and enjoy wall and channel diving. See large
pelagic fish and have shark encounters daily.
Witness the breeding and nesting of green
sea turtles at Turtle Island and experience
Crab Island's countless species of fish, crustaceans (shrimps, crabs, and lobsters), mollusks and other living creatures, both large
and small.
World War II wrecks at Landing Craft
Memorial Park are preserved in a veritable
underwater museum in the lagoons of Ulithi
Atoll. For the past 60+ years, these wrecks
have remained undisturbed on the bottom of
the lagoon. These shipwrecks have concentrations of soft corals, hard corals, sponges
and marine life that transform these lifeless
hulks into one of the most beautiful artificial
reefs in the world.
Divers have been given an exclusive
invitation by the chiefs of this atoll to dive the
reefs of these pristine islands. Ulithi Atoll will
rival all the best diving Micronesia now has to
offer with so much more.

Dive a WWI and a WWII wreck
on one dive!
On April 7, 1917, during World War I, the

She took nearly 24 hours before slipping
below the waves.
As the Tokai Maru came to her final resting

Pohnpei & Kosrae
Pohnpei lies 435 miles east of Truk Lagoon
and Kosrae is 347 miles east of Pohnpei.
Both are high, volcanic islands carpeted in
lush green foliage and rimmed by coral
reefs and sandy beaches. The residents are
friendly, speak English and enjoy meeting
visitors. The islands have only a few small
hotels and restaurants. There are no high rise
buildings, golf courses, shopping centers or
tour buses. In other words, the island is perfect for divers; and since both Pohnpei and
Kosrae are surrounded by a barrier reef and
drop-offs, diving is excellent on just about
any side of the island.
Both islands have excellent visibility for
diving that ranges from 100-200 feet, and
the reefs of both offer a wide array of exceptionally beautiful coral formations, including
table, plate and brain corals. The reefs are
inhabited by a myriad of tropical marine creatures including shrimp, nudibranchs, crabs,
octopus and giant crinoids in every color
imaginable.

Each island is covered in lush tropical vegetation, but the real action is underwater where
there is some of the richest and most varied
marine life to be found anywhere in the world.
Saipan
Once the site of a historic World War II
invasion, this island has been transformed
into a tropical vacation paradise. Best known
for its World War II artifacts, including sunken
tanks, planes and ships, it is also home of
world famous Blue Grotto, Saipan’s most
unusual dive experience and truly an extraordinary natural formation.

Tinian
Tinian possesses a rare natural resource
of which divers dream. The waters surrounding this small island are crystal clear and
filled with a fascinating array of marine life.
The majority of Tinian's waters are still
virgin and preliminary underwater exploration has proven to be very promising.
Most dive sites of Tinian are right up
against the shoreline, 20-50 yards from the
bluffs. The bottom slopes away very quickly
to deep water. At least 18 excellent sites have
already been discovered and charted.
Rota
Rota is the tip of a submerged mountain,
rising more than 36,000 feet from the floor of
the Marianas Trench, the deepest waters in
the world. Visibility is around 200 feet.

In 1996 the people of Bikini opened their atoll

Bikini Atoll is home to some of the most

Fiji is comprised of approximately
330 islands, of which about 100 are
permanently inhabited. Commonly divided into four main groups, collectively they
span over 250,000 square miles of ocean.
The group sits between 15 and 22
degrees south latitude, a location that
provides a tropical climate above and
below the waterline. Because the islands
vary so much in location and size, a
range of climates may exist simultaneously. The leeward, or western sides of
the larger islands, tend to be drier and
sunnier, while the eastern sides experience more rain, clouds and wind. In
general, Fiji has two seasons: the dry
cool season (April to October) and the
wet warm season (November to March.)
Imagine a South Seas paradise and
you imagine Fiji – soft balmy breezes
caress palm trees that cast shadows on
secluded beaches of white sand. A tranquil lagoon of crystalline aquamarine
water stretches to the horizon and
beyond. As day turns to dusk, the fiery
orange sun ignites the sky with yellows,
reds and purples, mirrored off the

As divers, we all have unique wants, needs
and desires. Some love strong currents with
large animal encounters; others prefer still
waters with tiny creatures to study. The problem is finding one destination that pleases
everyone. Fiji is such a place.
Fiji is one of the most welcoming places in
the world. Their language actually has no
word for ‘stranger.’ You’ll experience this
truly amazing hospitality within seconds of
arrival when smiling Fijians shout
“Bula!” (the local greeting) at every
possible opportunity.
This island paradise offers
magnificent landscapes and lush
foliage that can only be rivaled by
what lies beneath the crystal blue
waters. You can find deep walls,
comfortable shallows, current
cuts, soft corals, hard corals and
marine life galore.
This is the largest island in Fiji and the
name, Viti Levu, means Great Fiji. Some of
Fiji’s very best diving is found off its shores,
including numerous sites in Bligh Water
which runs between Viti Levu and Vanua
Levu to the north. Live-aboard diving provides
the best access to some of these sites, but
access is also available out of Rakiraki on
Viti Levu’s north shore. The reefs, coral
bommies and pinnacles in this area are often
covered in massive golden seafans and huge
soft coral trees in a rainbowed assortment of
hues. In the shallower waters the fish population abounds: schools of pelagics hover in
the currents while reef fish and clouds of
anthias take refuge among the corals.

Taveuni, Matangi & Qamea
Taveuni, Fiji’s third largest island, is called
the Garden Island, because it offers the
perfect climate for lush greenery on land and
the richest gardens of soft coral below water.
Taveuni’s topside wonders rival the reefs
and will compete fiercely for your time and
attention. The Rainbow Reef system extends
along the Somosomo Strait, between Taveuni
and Vanua Levu. When the tides rise and fall,
strong currents are forced through the channel,
supplying a perpetual supply of nutrients to
the soft corals. This natural phenomenon has
created more than 20 distinctive different
dive sites that collectively create one of the
most spectacular coral gardens found anywhere on Earth.
One of the most sought after dives in the
Strait is the Great White Wall. This is a dive of
a lifetime, although most of the thrill only
takes seconds because of the current. It is a
knock-your-flippers-off drop-off that is
completely covered with iridescent white soft
corals accessed by a dramatic swim-through.
You want the corals to be in full bloom –
feeding – yet you don’t want to be swept
away. No problem. The local dive guides
know just when the corals are still open and
the currents are easily manageable.
The waters surrounding Matangi and
Qamea off Taveuni’s northeast coast offer
additional dive sites and spectacular snorkeling. Most dive sites are 20 to 50 minutes from
the islands by boat. Some of these dives are
current dives with beautiful soft corals, while
others are current-free and feature pristine
hard corals and their inhabitants. There are

Among Tahiti’s plentiful attributes, there is one in particular that
draws divers from around the world and
this is the opportunity to dive with vast
quantities of one of the marine world’s
most exciting big animals – the shark.
Since the time man first entered the
sea, the shark has occupied a prominent
place in our minds in the form of both
reverence and awe. So much so that
some ancient seafarers in the Pacific had
even gone as far as to worship the shark
as a god. Its image, the emissary of death
and a symbol of power, has even been
depicted in the form of drawings on cave
walls by early man and in the pages of
hand-written journals.

Tahiti &
Her Islands
Composed of some 118 islands, covering
an expanse of ocean the size of Europe,
many poets, painters and writers have
sought inspiration in these far away islands.
To dreamers and tourists alike, Tahiti and her
islands have been the depiction of what a
true South Pacific paradise really is. Diving in
the Society Islands (Moorea, Bora Bora,
Raiatea and Taha’a) offers a variety of dives,
from exciting pass diving and shark feeding
to shallow lagoon dives. Advanced divers
head for the Tuamotus where strong currents
guarantee high adrenaline dives with large
animal encounters on virtually every dive.
Moorea
Just a short ferry ride northwest from the
island of Tahiti is Moorea. Scarcely 37 miles
in circumference, Moorea presents an island
of spellbinding beauty, with jagged
mountain spires built from a volcanic
past, blanketed in verdant green and
surrounded by crystalline, blue lagoons.
Unexpectedly, the underwater terrain
varies greatly from that above. While
seen from the air as a near impenetrable
ring of coral rising up from the depths,
the coral itself tends to be extremely low
growing, seldom reaching more than a
few feet above the reef mass. However, it
is not the formation of the reef that is so
dramatic, but rather what cruises around the
broad barriers, various passes and outer
drop-offs. To the Polynesians, this is the
“Kingdom of the Shark.”
At least five species of sharks can be seen
by divers. The lagoon is much smaller here,
tidal currents are less intense, and conditions
are more suitable for less advanced divers.
Gray reef sharks are regulars at some of the
sites, but blacktip reef sharks are much more
numerous.
Bora Bora
The dramatic peak of Otemanu rises
majestically out of the pristine lagoon
surrounding the island of Bora Bora. The
waters of the lagoon are home to a variety of
rays, including mantas and spotted eagle
rays which are often seen in large groups of
one hundred or more. While out in the open
water, sharks, schools of jack fish, barracuda
by the hundreds, tuna, marlin and occasionally dolphins and even whales can be seen in
this area.

several hundred yards across. With each tidal
change, phenomenal quantities of water
pass through both the passes, the flow
regularly reaching speeds of five to six knots.
The sensation of drifting the entire length of
either pass on an incoming tide is as close as
one can come to flying through water.
During these substantial water changes,
large animals including sharks, dolphins,
mantas and more will enter the mouth of the
passes to feed, sometimes traveling their
entire length in the company of divers.
Manihi
Manihi, one of the Tuamotu atolls which
houses hundreds of thousands of Black Pearl

one deep water pass called Tairapa.
Consequently, all water movements through
it are crucial, as is the flow of food which
attracts this unique density of sea life, as the
tides rise and fall. Truly one of natures gifts,
at only 120 feet wide and a half-mile long, it
is a great aquarium that can be covered from

which reaches a

dive shops, restaurants, shops and bars and
has been a popular area for divers for many
years. There are a number of sites just minutes away making 4-5 dives per day easily
doable. Nearby sites offer reef and wreck
diving, as well as mandarin fish dives. Puerto
Galera is also a major tech diving area with
excellent operations offering mixed gas,
rebreathers and more. Day trips to the
marine protected area of Verde Island are
also available, where diving its massive
current-swept pinnacles with walls of corals
and abundant marine life is always a thrill.
About an hour’s flight south of Manila,
Dumaguete is located on the southern
end of Negros Island in the Visayas Island
group. Resorts here are located along
quiet beaches about 15 minutes from
town, and offer a tranquil setting from
which to enjoy some of the Philippines best
dive sites. Most resorts offer a house reef
for easy shore diving as well as a number of
nearby dive sites. This is a fantastic
destination for macro photographers and
aficionados of “muck diving.” Everything
from giant frogfish, ghost pipefish, octopus,
seahorses and many more of the marine
world’s rarest creatures can be found here on
a regular basis. Day trips to offshore sites of
Apo Island, Siquijor and Sumilon Island offer
spectacular reef, wall and current diving with
pristine coral gardens and plenty of marine
life, from massive schools of jacks, pacific
barracudas, tuna and other pelagics.
Tubbataha, Apo Reef and Coron
Many of the Philippines most exciting dive
sites are accessible only by live-aboard.
Tubbataha Reef is comprised of two atolls
separated by a channel and located about
100 miles southeast of the island of Palawan
in the Sulu Sea. Designated by UNESCO as a
World Heritage Site in 1993, these atolls are
famous for their outstanding marine diversity
and healthy reefs. Due to weather patterns
that make the area untenable for most of the
year, it is only accessible from March through
June giving this site an even more alluring

quality. The remote nature of these reefs
attract all manner of marine life, both large
and small. Sheer walls drop off from coral
shelves that are exposed at high tide where
sharks, barracudas, turtles and large schools
of jacks cruise the outskirts.
Apo Reef is a popular stop for live-aboards
departing out of Batangas from June through
February. It is located about 20 miles to the
west of Mindoro in the Luzon group of
islands. In the past, some areas of this reef
have suffered from fish bombing but much of
it is still pristine and full of life. A few wrecks
are also located within these waters offering
additional shelter for the area’s marine life.
Coron is another area that is popular
with divers visiting the Philippines for
its World War II Japanese wrecks
that resulted from an attack by
the U.S. forces on September
24, 1944. The dramatic
topography of the region
offers spectacular scenery

Much of Papua New Guinea was
embroiled in World War II with one of its
bloodiest battles taking place between
Australian and Japanese forces, as the
Japanese fought their way across New
Guinea’s rugged terrain in an attempt to
occupy Port Moresby. The route that the soldiers followed, the Kokoda Trail, is now open
for hearty trekkers to challenge.
Milne Bay
One of the most popular areas for diving in
PNG, Milne Bay is the eastern most inlet on
the island of New Guinea, an expansive body
of water with over 600 islands and atolls
extending predominantly north and east of
Alotau (a one hour flight from the international gateway of Port Moresby). The rich waters
nestled between the Coral Sea and Solomon
Sea offer what many divers believe to be
PNG’s highest marine biodiversity. While liveaboards are the only way to reach some of
the area’s most popular dive sites, landbased diving is also available with top sites
only minutes away by boat. Some of PNG’s
best muck diving can also be found in this
area, where the rarest species of the marine
world exist in areas that differ dramatically
from the pristine coral gardens only a short

distance away.
A must see in this area are the skull caves
where hundreds of skulls remain piled in
caverns, remnants of the cannibalistic culture which was practiced by a few tribes,
even until recent history. These days, many
villages welcome visitors and perform traditional dance and cultural performances with
elaborate tribal dress, including masks, cloth
made from bark and foliage. Animal bones,
shark teeth, bird-of-paradise feathers and
wild boar tusks are also used as decoration.
Milne Bay
Often referred to as the “Land of
the Unexpected”, this world class
diving destination offers the adventurous
traveler the experience of visiting one of
the last wild and still largely uncivilized
places on Earth. The rich waters
surrounding its shores are as diverse
and unique as any on the planet with
everything from World War II wrecks,
spectacular sea mounts and offshore
pinnacles, fringing reefs and lagoons,
incredible muck diving and more.
Historically, little is known about this
wild remote country. The first Europeans
are believed to have arrived in the 1500’s
but there was virtually no successful
settlements established for another
300 years.

Only 150 miles north of Rabaul on the
