Post Secondary celebratory
lunch for graduates
Student Services invited family members and friends to celebrate
the achievements of the 2007 post-secondary graduates. Graduates
were recognized at a lunch held in Montreal in June.
Master of Ceremonies Wayne McElroy, guidance counsellor, acknowledged the graduates’ hard work, sacrifice, and commitment
necessary to finish their respective programs. He said, “In order to
graduate, every student had to be engaged in a persistent effort over
a long period of time to complete their assignments, study for tests,
and make class presentations. Some of you will enter the working
world, and others will embark upon another educational program.
Being challenged and seeking to do more than you ever thought
you could is not over. You will be continuously challenged… every
day… all the time.”

Les Services aux étudiants ont invité les membres des familles
et les amis des étudiants ayant obtenu un diplôme d’études postsecondaires en 2007 à venir célébrer cet événement heureux. Les
diplômés ont été reconnus lors d’un déjeuner tenu à Montréal en
juin dernier.
Le maître de cérémonie, Wayne McElroy, conseiller en orientation,
a reconnu le travail, l’esprit de sacrifice et les engagements que les
diplômés ont dû déployer pour terminer leurs programmes respectifs. «Pour obtenir un diplôme, chaque étudiant doit faire preuve
de persévérance pendant une longue période pour effectuer ses
travaux, étudier en vue de passer des examens et faire des présentations en classe. Certains d’entre vous entreront sur le marché du
travail et d’autres poursuivront leurs études. Vous n’avez pas fini
d’être mis au défi et vous devrez vous dépasser plus que jamais. On

first graduate in Theology. She studied
at the Arthur Turner Training School in
Pangnirtung. Annie was accompanied
and supported by her family throughout
her time in Nunavut. Annie is now a
practicing minister in Kangirsuk.

Arctic roses and flowers like them that pierce through the snow are my
favourite type of flowers because of their sheer strength and tenacity. They
manage to pierce through the snow and bring colour into the world at the end
of the long winter season. They bring a breath of fresh air and promise…just
like these grads have done to our department. Upon their arrival they are meek
and uncertain. In time, once they begin to adapt, we see their true colours and
personality!”
Now with knowledge and confidence in hand, it is time for these roses to uproot
once again and to look for new soil. Wherever you go graduates, remember to
“bloom where you are planted”. And to quote Ghandi: “You must be the change
you wish to see in the world”. May you continue to make this world a better place

Les roses de l’Arctique et les fleurs de ce type qui percent la neige sont mes
fleurs favorites en raison de leur force et de leur ténacité. Elles réussissent à
percer la neige et à amener de la couleur dans le monde à la fin d’un dur et
long hiver. Elles sont comme une bouffée d’air frais et font naître l’espoir…tout
comme nos diplômés l’ont fait pour notre service. À leur arrivée, elles sont frêles
et incertaines, mais après un certain temps, elles commencent à s’adapter. Nous
voyons alors sortir leurs vraies couleurs et leur vraie personnalité!
Maintenant, avec les connaissances et la confiance acquises, il est temps
pour ces roses de se déraciner de nouveau à la recherche d’un terreau plus
fertile encore. Quel que soit l’endroit où vous irez, rappelez-vous d’éclore là
vous vous implanterez. Voici une citation de Ghandi : «Vous devez être le changement que vous désirez voir dans le monde.» Je souhaite que vous sachiez

Kimberly Bennett, originally from Kuujjuaraapik,
earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Pharmacology from the University of Toronto. She
is our first student to be sponsored in this program,
and our first student to attend the University of
Toronto. Pharmacology is a very challenging field,
and Kimberly had to do an extensive internship in
order to complete the requirements for graduation.

Six teachers were honoured at the Teacher Training Graduation
ceremony which took place at the Katitavik Town Hall in Kuujjuaq
in July.
The following Teacher Training graduates received their permanent teaching diploma from the Ministère de l’Éducation du
Québec and the Certificate in Education for First Nations and Inuit
from McGill University:

On the same occasion, the achievement of Qiallak Nappaaluk
Qumaaluk from Kangiqsujuaq was celebrated. She received her
Bachelor of Education Degree from McGill University in May.
Syra Qinuajuak from Akulivik was the proud recipient of the Jack
Cram Memorial Prize. This $2,500 prize is given in memory of Dr.
Cram’s outstanding contribution to Native and Northern Education.
Two scholarships are awarded annually, one to a student in the
Kativik Teacher Training Program, and the other to a student in the
Nunavut Teacher Education Program. The scholarships are awarded
for further study in the Faculty of Education by the Committee on
Student Standing on the recommendation of the Directors of the
two programs, and the Director of the Office of First Nations and Inuit
Education. Syra graduated from the Teacher Training Program in 1999,
and is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Education Program.

des diplômes de la Formation des maîtres qui s’est tenue à l’hôtel
de ville Katitavik à Kuujjuaq en juillet.

Syra Qinuajuak d’Akulivik était la fière récipiendaire du prix
commémoratif Jack Cram. Ce prix de 2500 $ a été décerné en
souvenir de la contribution exceptionnelle du Dr Cram à l’éducation
Autochtone et du Nord. Deux bourses d’études sont attribuées tous
les ans : l’une des deux est destinée à un étudiant du programme
