2012 Awards Chair Message
architecture within urban centers. This year’s
submissions celebrate the distinct art form of
designing tall buildings, especially in terms
of their connection to place and culture. Due
to the fact that urban density is poised to
boom globally with a shifting population, the
success of these tall buildings is paramount to
our changing world.
Welcome to the Council’s 11th Annual Awards
Ceremony & Dinner and congratulations to all
of this year’s award winners and finalists! In a
busy and frenetic world we so rarely have the
time or opportunity to take pause, admire, and
critique the accomplishments of others, and I
am grateful to have been a part of this process
by serving as the CTBUH Awards Chair.
As a jury, we were committed to focusing our
energy on the unique challenges and creative
solutions that come with building skyscrapers,
while also acknowledging the separate set
of challenges that come with moderately
tall buildings. The jury had a clear discussion
of the unique challenges in designing tall
buildings and the importance of beautiful
This year’s submissions represented a
remarkably varied body of exemplary
architecture rising around the world.
These towers reflect the progress we are
making globally in designing buildings that
perpetuate context-based design. My hope is
that this trend of designing culturally specific
and place-based buildings continues, while
promoting and improving both the world’s
urban centers and the health and well-being
of its people.
I wish you the pleasantest of evenings as we
celebrate these award-winning projects!

About the Awards
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat initiated its Awards Program in
2001, with the creation of the Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award. This
inaugural award was bestowed to Lynn S. Beedle himself, who founded the CTBUH
in 1969. Successive winners of this award have been individuals who have made
extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban
environment, following in the values and mission of Lynn S. Beedle.
Two years later, the Fazlur R. Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal was introduced.
This Lifetime Achievement Award was created to recognize an individual for
his/her demonstrated excellence in technical design and/or research that has made
a significant contribution to a discipline(s) for the design of tall buildings and the
built urban environment.
The Council began recognizing the team achievement in tall building projects by
issuing Best Tall Building Awards in 2007, to give recognition to projects that have
made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the
urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest
level. It issues four regional awards each year (Americas, Asia & Australasia, Europe,
and Middle East & Africa). In addition, from the four “regional” awards, one project
is awarded the honor of overall Best Tall Building “Worldwide” which is announced
on the night of the awards ceremony. This year the Council has introduced a new
award, the CTBUH Innovation Award, which recognizes a specific area of recent
innovation in a tall building project.

In looking to innovate high-rise design, nature
and culture are the most resilient sources of
inspiration. The Al Bahar Towers relies on both
of these in the execution of the advanced

respond directly to the climatic requirements
of the region. The “mashrabiya” form of the

Islamic tradition of the Middle East, while the
