Presidents Message
HOTFF Toronto Bound Weekend (February 13 - 15, 2015)
Congratulations to Heart of the Flag Federation for a fantastic
weekend of successful events. Raising over $8000 to save lives with
the Rainbow Railroad charity is an incredible achievement. Thank you
Jo Arnone & Jen Victor, the donors, volunteers, and sponsors for
making Toronto Bound Charity Auction a huge success. Thank you
also to Douglas OKeeffe , Alex Dunlop and Duncan MacLachlan for
the inaugural Fireside Chats.
I am truly humbled to receive the HOTFF Man of the Year Award. It
was totally unexpected and I thought that it would have been awarded to either of my conominees, Les Beu or Connor Black-Eagle. Thank you to the Board of Directors of The
Heart of The Flag and the Community for this honor. Without the support of my partner
Ross and the Spearhead Membership, who have encouraged me along the way, this
wouldn’t have been possible. Congratulations to other award recipients; HOTF Toronto
Community Award - Woman Andrea Zanin, David Galbraith Award - Leslie J. Anderson,
HOTF Youth Award – Jeremy Feist, HOTF Volunteer of the Year Award - Dwight
Skeates, HOTF President’s Award – Greg McDowell and all of the nominees for the
awards.

SPEARHEAD CHARITY OF CHOICE PRSENTATIONS
Listed below are the Charities that made a presentation at the January 26th OGM.
I have reprinted each Charity’s Mission Statement from their websites as well
highlights from each representatives presentation. A full transcript was sent to all
members earlier in the month. Charities are presented here in alphabetical order.
Please give serious thought to which charity you feel would be most in need of our
support for the upcoming year and return the ballot received in the self-addressed
envelope as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact our
president Randy Boyd at [email protected].
CANINE VISION CANADA
The Canine Vision Canada program is the longest standing program. Since 1985,
Canine Vision Dog Guides have been enriching the lives of Canadians who are at least
12 years old and are blind or visually impaired.
These Dog Guides are trained to assist their handlers in navigating obstacles typically
found on most daily routes, including curbs, steps and crowds.
With the knowledge that they are capable of traveling freely and safely, handlers feel self
assured every time they leave their homes with their Dog Guide. The confidence that
they gain allows them to pursue education, careers and activities in their communities.
Highlights from Sandy Turney’s presentation at our OGM on January 25, 2015
 Our organization takes that natural ability that dogs have for caring and we
breed, train and place them with people that would benefit by having them.
 Our organization is unique in the world since we provide a whole range of
benefits.
 Hearing dogs for the Deaf, Seizure dogs for people with epilepsy and
autism, Diabetic alert dogs, etc.
 We’re a National Charity and we have a great presence in Toronto, and are
situated in Oakville.
 All dogs are provided at absolutely no cost and we have no Government
funding.
 A trained dog costs over $25,000 per person that we help.
 We currently place over 150 dogs a year now.
PWA
Mission Statement
We engage people living with HIV/AIDS in enhancing their health and well-being through
practical and therapeutic support services and broader social change, and we inspire
them to live into their dreams and discoveries.
Highlights from Doug Taylor’s presentation at our OGM on January 25, 2015
 We have been partnered with Spearhead for many years back at least to 2005
 PWA provides practical supports which includes our food program, essentials
market, food for life, community garden and financial assistance.
 support for people living with HIV/AIDS to other services that PWA doesn’t provide,

health and therapeutic care, and an outreach program.
61% of our clients access our essential market.
Newly diagnosed usually need some financial help and need out essentials market.
Currently this year, we have 1864 clients access the food bank, 1416 are men, 448
are women, 8 trans-women, and 1 trans man.
Spearhead’s support has helped provide fresh produce and special dietary
products. Helped grow more food in the summer in our Community Garden and
more funds to buy produce in the winter.
Primarily serve people in the age range 24 to 55.

SINGING OUT
Mission Statement
Singing Out is Toronto’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer
Community Chorus. We are a mixed-voice, non-auditioned chorus – a relative rarity
in LGBTQ communities across North America. But Singing Out is more than just a
choir. Above all, Singing Out is a community. Our mission is PRIDE. MUSIC.
BELONGING. We are proud of who we are, of our history, and of our
accomplishments. We show our pride through music that entertains as it speaks to
us and about us, to our audiences, and to the wider community. We create a warm
and welcoming space where everyone who enjoys singing and learning can find a
place to belong and have fun. We welcome different levels of experience, as well
as diverse backgrounds and identities. We sing together, and we sing out.
Musically, we cover everything from the sacred to the silly, in many different styles
(pop, showtunes, classical, folk, jazz) and languages. We do not require an
audition to join, although some “voicing” may be necessary to determine which
section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone or Bass) best fits your vocal range, if you
aren’t sure.
Highlights from Charlie Andrews presentation at out OGM January 25, 2015
 They have 142 members with 8 non-singing members
 They want to represent Toronto and Canada in the LGBT chorale festival in
Denver, Colorado next year.
 Our Goal is to raise $25,000 so we can make it inclusive to members of the
choir
 If selected as Spearhead’s charity of choice, that would be a great project for
the funds
 The Choir has 3 major concerts a year: a Holiday Show, a Spring Show and a
Cabaret.
 We pride ourselves by also engaging the community by doing free concerts.
 Additional information can be found at www.singingout.com

NOMINEE FOR SPEARHEAD BROTHERHOOD AWARD 2015
AL RIZZO
Al Rizzo is first and foremost a
leatherman with heart. As is so often
typical
in
the
leather/fetish/kink
community we end up with nicknames
that exemplify some aspect of who we
are, what we are about, and where we
fit into community. For those fortunate
enough to know Albert personally, and
meet his standard of what brotherhood
stands for, then chances are you have
been told by him personally to call him
"Pop". A better father figure one could
not hope to find.
Al got much of his discipline and
strength from being a sergeant in the
U.S. Army as well as his tour in
Vietnam. He was awarded the Army
Commendation Medal. If there is pain
or problems, his motto is “just suck it
up and take it!”
As a long standing Associate member
of the Rochester Rams, Pop has
helped to get many a wandering New
York leather man to their first
Spearhead Run where he kept as many entertained as possible in Cabin four. In 1985
Pop found himself enthralled with another attendee at the Spearhead Run and 29 years
latter you still find them together annually hosting many a Canadian brother at "the
Ranch" during Can/Am weekend and at various other times throughout the year. Pop is
forever reaching out and attempting to provide the means for various factions of the
leather community to come together and build community. When the ranch isn't full of his
Canadian brothers chances are you will find a garage full of motorcycles as the Empire
City Motorcycle Club of NYC are availing themselves of a much needed pit stop while on
their way to a Rams Run or in an annual pillage of Toronto, sometimes the ranch is even
the final destination! The ranch along with Al and Dan's hospitality and amenities often
feels like coming home to a safe and non-judgmental refuge for many in our community.
For more years then one should politely count, Al has provided a vehicle for the Annual
Rochester Pride Parade. He has helped retain our visibility in the general community not
only with the vehicle but providing many of the supplies to build the float and the place to
construct it. One is almost assured that the process will include a cookout or two during
the construction and disassembly of the annual float.
Personally and privately Pop attempts to help every leatherman he befriends to be a
better more fully self actualized version of them self and to put that person out there with
others. If we all did that then we would all be better brothers and our community would
be better, stronger, and healthier for it. So next time you are at the ranch put a little
something in the tip jar on the bar. The drinks are free and all the money in the jar goes
to help a local hospice that is one of Pop's personal charities that he supports.
Brotherhood is a two way street. Pop runs in both directions.

ROSS STRETTON
I have been a member of Spearhead going on 14 years.
I am the Senior Officer for the Provincial Offences and By-Law Enforcement
Department for The City of St. Catharines, I am in my 35th year with St.
Catharines. I am also a professional Church Organist/Pianist and Choir
Director. I hold three honorary Fellowships, one from Canada and two from
England.
In November I was honoured when The Moderator of The United Church of
Canada (The Right Rev. Gary Paterson) presented to me a framed letter
celebrating 50 years as a Church Musician. Gary and his partner from
Vancouver marched in the World Pride Parade with us.
Spearhead has done well to see 45 years of service. We strive to assist and
support our charities of choice, our food drives and all other social events we
enjoy as a bonded group.
We take this time to thank the Board for all their hard work and endless hours
of volunteer dedication for all they do to make us strong in the GTA and
beyond.

TONY WOJNOWSKI
I have been a Spearhead member for 20+ years. When I put on my Spearhead
insignia, I knew it came with unwritten obligations.
That being the case, when we hosted our annual Run, I decided to play the
music at Camp New Moon and Camp Northland. I was responsible for the
sound system, lighting and general electrical needs of our Club and guests
using mostly my own equipment.
I was on the Membership Committee under Directors of Membership Jack
Mackness, Dick Arruda and Tom Pearce.
I live in Kitchener, Ontario and attend meetings and events that fit my work
schedule. Several times other Kitchener members and I have enabled
Spearhead to meet quorum requirements.
For many years, Wayne (my husband to be) and I have worked in the kitchen
and assisted with setup and tear down at the annual Christmas Party.
I have donated several pieces of my art work for competitions, awards and
auctions, for example, Mr. Roundup and Mr. North Forty. I won Mr. North Forty
in 2000 and Mr. Black Eagle in 2001.
For more information or clarification please contact me at (519)569-9302.
Thank you for your vote.

Looking Back at WorldPride 2014 with
Randy Boyd
by Bryen Dunn
R
andy joined Spearhead Leather Denim Social Club

witnessing the camaraderie and brotherhood shared by
members of the Club. Randy was Mr. Spearhead 2013 and is now the President of
the longest continuously running gay organization in Canada of its kind
(established in 1970). As a Member of Spearhead L.D.S.C., Randy enjoys giving
back to the community by holding social and fundraising events for charities.
Spearhead has raised thousands of dollars for charity over the years as well as
“Spearheadin” some of Toronto’s favourite events.
How did you spend your WorldPride?
Since Spearhead Leather Denim Social Club was nominated for an INSPIRE Award in
the category of Organization of the Year, we were invited to join them on their float for
the WorldPride Parade. It was priceless when the gas generator for the DJ’s sound
system on the float ran out. Who would have predicted that the parade would be six
hours long!
What did you enjoy most about the celebration?
I enjoyed seeing international visitors come to our city to see what Toronto has to offer.
There were many parties and activities to choose from during WorldPride. It was an
honour that Toronto was selected as the first city in North America to host the
WorldPride festivities.
What surprised you most about the festival?
I was very surprised at the costs involved to reserve a spot in the Streetfair during
WorldPride.
The insurance required for a spot in the Community Fair or the Marketplace was quite
expensive and not affordable for local smaller groups to participate.
What moment made you most proud to be part of the global LGBTQ+ community?
Unfortunately the leather, rubber and fetish community is ofter left in the background. So
far back in the line that there is little or no coverage on the television broadcast of the
parade. That said, I’m proud to have had the opportunity to be able to participate in the
Flag Raising Ceremony, the mass wedding at Casa Loma and the WorldPride Parade.
Our pride will grow as more countries around the world are also able to express
themselves and have equal rights. Then it ca be truly called a global LGBTQ+
community.
What’s the one thing you hope people remember most about WorldPride 2014 in
Toronto?
We are a world class city with a diverse range of ethnicity and cultures.
What do you believe WorldPride’s universal message is?
We have come a long way but there is still much left to do. We are fortunate to have
marriage equality in Canada, and to live in a country where you can be open about your
sexuality.
