Inside - Vallejo Chamber of Commerce
November 2006 • Volume 22 • Number 11
The renovation of the Empress Theatre, which is projected to be complete by early 2007, is a catalyst for the
revitalization of the downtown. The Chamber’s move to the downtown this December is expected to have a
significant impact on the revitalization effort as well.
Chamber Announces
Headquarters Move To Downtown
T
he Vallejo Chamber of Commerce, the city’s oldest and
largest business organization,
will be moving from its longtime
city-owned waterfront location
in late November. The Chamber
will be relocating its offices from
2 Florida Street to 427 York Street
in downtown Vallejo. The new
Chamber office will be housed adjacent to the USA World Classics
Event Center in a building owned
by Buck Kamphausen.
“As our lease approached its
current expiration date, our first
choice was to buy our long-time
home from the city,” explained
Verna Mustico, Vallejo Chamber
Chairman of the Board. “We made
what we thought was a fair market
value offer, but the city turned us
down and noted that they thought
they could sell it for a higher
price. We then decided to look at
other available options. We were
thrilled to find a great downtown
office and are grateful to Buck
Kamphausen for working with
us to get this deal done for the
Chamber. Hopefully, our move
will also help the city better utilize
the building at 2 Florida Street to
make up some of its current and
projected budget shortfalls.”
Kamphausen added, “Vallejo
businesspeople represented by
the Vallejo Chamber have made
a great step forward by moving
away from city-owned property
that can hopefully be rented at
market rate. They are creating
a new direction forward for the
Chamber.”
The Vallejo Chamber has
occupied the 2 Florida Street location since its members constructed
the building in 1959. Thousands of
member businesses and community organizations have conducted
business and organized volunteer
efforts there over the years, and
the site has been the starting point
for important community events
such as the 4th of July Parade and
Celebration for decades.

Executive Board
Votes To Oppose Measure J
he Executive Board of the
Vallejo Chamber of Commerce
voted unanimously to oppose
Measure J, the Orderly Growth
Initiative for Solano County,
which will be part of the November 7th ballot. This initiative
measure is designed to extend the
duration of the provisions of the
Orderly Growth Initiative of 1994.
If passed, this initiative measure
will extend the Orderly Growth
Initiative’s growth control provisions to the year 2036.
“The Vallejo Chamber of
Commerce believes that passage
of Measure J, the Orderly Growth
Initiative, would have a potentially
negative impact on future economic growth by restricting land use
for development purposes,” states
Rick Wells, Vallejo Chamber
President and CEO. “Measure J
would send a message that Solano
County is becoming increasingly
less friendly towards business
expansion and job growth. This is
counter to our Chamber’s mis-
sion of promoting a strong local
economy.”
The Vallejo Chamber is the latest business organization in Solano
County to announce its opposition
to Measure J. The Fairfield-Suisun
Chamber of Commerce and the
Vacaville Chamber of Commerce,
as well as the Solano County Farm
Bureau, previously announced
their opposition to Measure J. 

Downtown Is The Place To Be
A
s you now
know, your
Chamber is moving
downtown. We are
so excited to be
moving our office
- the center of commerce for business
in Vallejo – to the historic core
of our city! Many thanks to the
Chamber Building Committee, the
entire Board of Directors, and especially to Buck Kamphausen
and Phil Elfstrom for making
this move happen. The new office will be located at 427 York
Street, adjacent to the USA
World Classics Event Center. The tenant improvements
to the new headquarters will
make it a great place for both
the Chamber staff and members to conduct business. We
will open for business the 1st
of December and we hope that
all of our members will take
this opportunity to come and
visit our beautiful new location.
attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.
Board of Directors
Leadership Spotlight
Although new to the board this
year, John Feldman of Nationwide
Floor & Window Coverings has
not been shy to take on responsibility. He is wonderfully energetic,
and was instrumental (along with
his lovely wife Cheryl) in acquiring items for the Live & Silent
ment officials from the Philippines. We were able to tie in some
of these contacts with the planning
of the upcoming trade mission to
the Philippines.
The Seafood Extravaganza &
Auction was once again a grand
and exciting event, thanks to the
direction of our Vice Chairman
for Community Promotion Janice
Mares and super-staffer Constance
Howard. A very special Thank
You to all the firefighters and
their families for their efforts
in providing (and preparing) us
with all that great seafood!
In my ongoing efforts to visit
as many members as possible,
this month was very successful. Fellow board member
Freda Dill and I called on
Sonoma Boulevard mainstays
Three Brothers Furniture,
Round Table Pizza, and Vallejo
Nissan. Chamber Ambassador
Ike Redman and I had a full
day along Springs Road, meeting with the Solano Association of
Realtors, F&M Compserv, Nation
Home Realty Mortgage, Caboodle
Cartridge, the Pet Shoppe, ARS
Realty, and Fidelity Capital Funding.
As always, I look forward to
speaking with or meeting as many
of our members as possible. Thank
you for your continued support
of our efforts to build a stronger
economy in Vallejo. 
We are so
excited to be
moving our office
to the historic
core of our city!
Proud to be an
Athena Recipient
I am so very honored to have been
named an Athena Award honoree
in 2000. I count myself privileged
to be among the select company of
the 19 other Vallejo business and
professional “Athenas”, including
2005 honoree Jeannie Hamann
and fellow Chamber board members Freda Dill, Cynthia Sproule
and Pamela Pitts. The Athena
Committee is now hard at work
preparing to choose the recipient
of the 2006 Athena Award, which
will once again be presented by
Avery Greene Motors.
The Athena Award is presented
each year to an outstanding business or professional woman in
honor of her professional excellence, community service and for
actively assisting women in their
Auctions at the Seafood Extravaganza. He even volunteers his sons
to help at Chamber events – now
that is what I call commitment to
the Chamber!
Out and About
This past month has been a very
busy one for the Chamber and the
Board of Directors. We participated with the City and other officials

Chamber HQ To Downtown
(continued from page 1)
In the past two years, Chamber
members completely renovated
the boardroom and re-painted the
exterior of the building in an effort
to upgrade the “headquarters for
business” in Vallejo.
Rick Wells, President and CEO,
is excited about the move for
the Chamber. Wells commented,
“We look back with a tremendous amount of respect for those
chamber members that originally
organized and built the Florida
Street location. At the same time,
we look forward to making the
most of this unique opportunity
in order to best serve the needs
of our nearly 700 members.” He
continued, “The move provides a
number of benefits for the Chamber including having a headquarters in a centralized location; near
Vallejo’s downtown revitalization
area. It’s the beginning of a new
era for our organization” 
