24th August 2013 - Manurewa v Ellerslie and a
Please stand for a Minutes Silence prior to kick off.
Manurewa AFC and
AFF mourns the loss of
Alex Ogilvy
It is with sadness we note the passing on Sunday 18 August of
Manurewa AFC founder member Alex Ogilvy.
A founder member and Life Member of the Manurewa AFC club,
which marked its 50th Jubilee in 2009, Alex performed a large number
of roles with the club; including more than one stint as president, the
most recent from 2000-2012.
Alex was also a foundation member of the Franklin and Districts
Football Association, which became the Counties Manukau Football
Association. Alex is a Life Member of the Counties Manukau
Football Association.
The Counties Manukau Football Association joined with the Auckland
Football Association in 2000 to form Soccer2, one of the seven
regional Federations in the country (now known as Auckland Football
Federation).
Auckland Football extend our deepest sympathies to Alex's family and
club mates at Manurewa AFC and we thank Alex for the outstanding
service he gave to football in our region.
Alex Ogilvy's funeral is at 2pm on Wednesday 21 August in the Chapel
of Manukau Memorial Gardens, Puhinui Road, Papatoetoe. The
Manurewa AFC clubrooms will be open from 3.30pm.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Hospice South Auckland may be
left in the Chapel foyer.

Welcome Ellerslie Prem's, reserves, and supporters to Manurewa for the last
game of the season.
For the club it’s a very sad day as we remember the loss of Alex Ogilvy last
Sunday. I ask you to join us for a minutes silence in his memory. A man who
has been with the club from its inception until his passing.
It hasn't been the best of seasons for the club this year but today we also
celebrate with another member of the 100 club, Justin Horan and with Kieran
last week I feel honoured to have watched you both during the last 5 years
as Alex would have too.
To all teams playing at home today—take a moment to reflect on the great
work that the behind the scenes staff do to make this great game possible
week in and out.
The club raffle was drawn last week and was a great success so thanks to
all who sold their tickets and to those who didn’t, let's hope you can try
harder next year. Again, to sponsors of the raffle thanks you and to Andrew
bloody well done.
As we look forward to next year in first division, please join with us in working
on making our stay a short one.
To the coaches and players, I thank you for your effort and look forward to
working with you again to get this great club back to the top level again.
To all other sides, senior, youth and junior, enjoy what is left of your season
and hopefully we'll see you all at prizegiving.
Alex, wish you were here.
Cheers
Kerry Bevan

Reserve Coaches Comments
This is the last report for the 2013 season from the reserves as we prepare to
take on Ellerslie in the final game of the season.
Ellerslie have a bit to play for because if they can secure the 3 points, they can
finish in 3rd place. We will finish the league in mid table but would like to
finish off our season in style.
Last week, we went down 2 -1 in a thriller against league winners Hamilton
where Hamilton cleared off the line in stoppage time and I was already
celebrating the goal before it had gone in and was wondering why the referee
hadn't awarded it.
I look back over the season and some of our results and wonder if only. I
think this has been a fairly successful season from my point of view because
there are some very good sides in this league, and we have run many of them
close with our biggest loss being a 4 - 2 loss.
I would like to thank all the players for their commitment over the season,
and Gordon Craig for his help over the first part of the season. I would like to
thank Howani and Nathan for the use of 1st team players and also those
players for giving 100% when they turned out for us. I would also like to
thank Anja for the organisation that she has put into this year in managing
the side.
I sign off for this year and hope to be doing this all again next year.

Comments
Welcome to all our supporters and the Ellerslie team for our last match of the season.
The first team wish to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Alex Ogilvy. I’m
sure Alex will be keeping an eye on the match from up above and the boys will be trying our
hardest to pick up a win for him.
Today’s match closes off what has been a challenging season for the first team. The best
way for us to finish this season will be with a win today. Ellerslie still have a good chance of
avoiding relegation if they can pick up the points today which should make for a well fought
entertaining match. While results have not been close to what we expect, the season has
given us the opportunity to blood some new young players to the club and premier league
level. We appreciate the effort and character shown by all the players involved with the first
team squad this season. We hope all this year’s players will return next season as they are
key in our challenge to regain Premier League status.
On behalf of the first team, Nath and I would also like to thank all the club supporters who
have cheered the lads on this year. Without a doubt Manurewa is one of the best supported
football clubs in New Zealand. Special mention to Kerry, Duncan and the club committee for
their continued support. We would also like to thank Steve Wood and Anya P for their work
with the Reserve team, Craig Hastings and Simon Bilton for their top class goal keeper
coaching and the work of our physiotherapists Sharon and Katherine from Physio Rehab
Group. Last but not least we would like to acknowledge and thank our team manager Adrian
Stewart who has been top class all year. Adrian goes the extra mile for the players and has
been an invaluable member of our team.
Please join us in the club after the match to hopefully celebrate a win to close the off the
season.
Cheers

Senior Report
With the season coming to an end we reflect on the year that was. As most on the board would suggest it a year we would like
to have over again.
As the First team ends its season destined for Division One, we as the question. Is that bad thing or a good thing. I guess that
depends on your own point of view. From my point of view I thank Hoani and Nathan for their efforts and the team they put
together when most of their opposition had taken the opportunity to select players and begin training. I said last week with
recent results wouldn't it be nice to start that season again. So Division 1 here we come, baring any "Administrative Error." or
innovation such as expanding the league... Well Done Hoane, Nathan and of course Adrian. To the players we thank you for your
commitment and not just coming to play at a club, but becoming part of it. Once a REWA player, always a REWA player.
Our Reserves have had one of its best years for some time. They may not have won the competition but the team played well
together and supported the first team as all good reserve teams do. Well done reserves, outstanding.
Assyrian Star. Have they found their level? With all good teams this team has many classy individuals. The key however is
they play even better as a team and we look forward to them being even stronger next year.
Division 3 unfortunately started without a coach and with assistance from Beau we managed to field a team with some
players stepping up to a level normally above their usual grade. Although a slow start in the first round, the second round
saw the team assisted by other senior members climb the ladder to end a respectable mid table above Ellerslie.
Division 9 was pulled together with group of guys and assistance from our senior and youth teams on a weekly basis.
Outstanding effort having a different team each week certainly made it hard to play team football but this team were keen to
compete and were able to win the competition after having started 4 weeks into the comp.
Over 30's Div 1. It was always going to be tough with an average age most likely closer to 40 than 30 but as we know these
guys don't give up. Still an enjoyable season and the end of year trip as always will be the highlight.
Ladies Div 2. Thanks ladies for your continued support on and off the field. With two games in hand they have the chance to
get off the bottom of the table. Supporters are encouraged to get along to these games to ensure we return to show the ladies
they are supported as much as they support the club.
Under 19 Metro - Again another great effort team and to win the league is an outstanding result. This team was well
supported by other players and teams within the club and share their success with the club.
This has been a year I'd prefer to forget, for many reasons. If it wasn't incompetent council workers and contractors it was a
Federation that failed perform in its most important task of assisting with the correct administration of the game. For Clubs,
sporting and other organisations to survive in our area these people must have the needs of the people they work for at heart.
Let's keep the relationship going and work with these people to ensure we get the services and support we need to be a
successful club at all levels.
Now since I was nagged to complete this report. I thank the club members for the work they have done at all levels of the
clubs. There are some great people coming through the club and I see the future of the club in good hands. My opportunity to
ensure the club has continued support within the community is coming in the way of the up coming elections. I am standing for
a position on the Wiri Licencing Trust to ensure our community and great clubs like our own are supported and able to be the
best they can be. Our local Board lead by Angela Dalton are supportive of the club and our local councillors on the Auckland
Council Sir John Walker and Callum Penrose continue to support us as they have this year. We have a great team running
and your support for the Manurewa Action Team will ensure Manurewa is a place to be proud of, whether it be Culture, arts or
sport.

LADIES REPORT
Hi all ,
There isn't much to report from the ladies team this week as we had a bye
last weekend but this weekend we have Onehunga-Mangere at home which
should be a good game and as I was doing a half marathon last time we played
them I have no idea what they are like to play against. I hope the ladies can
come away with the win and the 3points.
We have one game after that to play against Fencibles after this weekend
which I'm hoping for another win and 3 more points as well.
Good luck to all Manurewa teams playing this weekend.
I would also like to say that this week we lost a great club man and a true
legend of Manurewa Soccer.
ALEX WE WILL MISS YOU AND YOU WILL BE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS
AND YOUR LEGEND WILL LIVE ON AT MANUREWA AFC. IM SURE YOU
WILL BE WATCHING DOWN ON EVERY MANUREWA TEAM PLAYING EVERY
WEEKEND.
R.I.P SIR ALEX WE WILL MISS YOU.

Youth Report
Hi all
As this is the last report of the season, I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all our coaches and managers for the effort they have put in this
season. Also to my Committee, you guys have done a fabulous job this
season.
A few teams still have a couple more games to play but at this stage I can
confirm that we have 4 teams who have won (or first equal) the
championships. They are 11th Lightning (Premier), 13th Force (Div 2
South), 14th Gold (Div 1) and 15th Stallions (Div 4). 11th Gorillas (Div 4
South) had a game this morning and one next week. If they win these,
they also will take out their division.
Congratulations to all teams for a great season. We wish you all a safe
summer and see you at registrations in February.
On a sadder note, we farwelled our matriarch Alex Ogilvy on Wednesday.
Thanks must to out to all club members who attended the service in club
colours and showed our respect with a Guard of Honour at the end of the
service. A moving tribute to a wonderful man. Alex, you will be missed
here at Manurewa AFC but will never be forgotten. Rest peacefully.

Above is the overview on where our 9th and 10th Grade Teams sit at the end of
a long 2013 season. Well done to all teams. Special mention to 9th Cougars
undefeated this season also to 10th Cougars as both teams Division Winners.
Win/Lose/Draw this season the object of football is having fun with teammates,
development and time spent on the ball in training and on the field.
With the development of skills comes its own reward at the end of the game.
Some comments from Parents/Coaches and Kids— “Great Season and love to
watch kids play”, “Development and ball skills improving”, “Lots of fun for the
younger kids but would like less drills on Saturday and more game time”, “Nice
to see the level of progression through grades”, “Soccer is fun and I like it fun”,
“It’s like having a cool drink of something refreshing. Just seems to wipe weekly
stress away. They play because they are loving it.”
Please visit the Manurewa Junior Website or Facebook Page to fill in one of the
survey links (relative to your grade) to provide us with your feedback on the season and how we can improve next year.
Thank you for being part of our 2013 Junior Football Season.

Dear Rewa,
Just like to say, how sorry we both are, with the lost of
Alex Ogilvy,. Ispent many happy hours at the club in
the 70’s and 80’s, and Alex was the perfect gentleman.
Again a sad lost,
Harry and Elaine Horsman
