For the sea
The wind blowing in Ouistreham Riva-Bella
comes from the sea. On the beach, on the port or
near the estuary, the sea is ever-present in our fine seaside resort. Stock up on health.
••• For fishing
Whether you want to gather shellfish, fish in rivers or in
the sea, you will find everything you need between the sea
front, the port and the canal - or simply watching the ballet
of our fishing vessels bringing back their catch, to be sold
the same day in the fish market.
••• For Boats
To the east of the canal locks, the marina has 650 dock
rings for amateur sailors, who are regular visitors or just
passing through. Take part in a regatta or enjoy a wonderful
sail along the quayside. Admire the merchant ships crossing
the locks towards the canal, dream of sea crossings as you
watch the enormous ferries arriving or leaving the outport
for Portsmouth.
••• For Sailing
The immense sandy beach in Ouistreham is ideal for all
kinds of activities: sand yachting, dinghy or catamaran
sailing, sea kayaks, jet-skiing, windsurfing, paddleboarding,
longe-côte - take the plunge!

For remembrance
In 2014, Ouistreham had the honour of hosting the international ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the D-Day
landings. As part of the 4th British commandos, Kieffer's Green
Berets, the only French troops to take part in D-Day, liberated
our town on the morning of 6 June 1944.
••• Museums
Museums: the Grand Bunker Museum and the N°4
Commandos Museum invite you to revisit this period of our
history.
••• The Flame
On one of the remains of the Atlantic Wall, this
commemorative monument, the work of Yvonne Guégan,
is dedicated to the memory of the courageous French
soldiers in the 4th Commandos.
••• Sword
Sword: in the eastern zone of Operation Overlord, our town
is an excellent starting point to explore the major D-Day
landmarks: Sword, Juno and Gold, the British and Canadian
sectors, Omaha and Utah, the American sectors.
••• Le Soldat Léon
The mobile app "Le Soldat Léon" is a
chance to relive the 6 June 1944 as if you
were there, on your tablet or smartphone.
Head for the panoramic terrace of the
Tourist Office to take part in this adventure...
USEFUL INFORMATION

Major Kieffer's 177 commandos the honour of landing on
French soil first.

of the casino, which had been

...Near the Flame, the statues of Lord Lovat and of his
famous piper Bill Millin in Colleville Montgomery, recall the
memory of the 29 000 British
sectors who landed at the
Sword sector on D-Day...
...Léon Gautier, one of Kieffer's
men, and Johannes Börner, a
former German paratrooper,
still live in Ouistreham and
have become friends. You may
have seen their embrace during the festivities on 6 June

For Gastronomy
Calvados, a land of gourmet delights: Ouistreham is at
the heart of Calvados, a region that is teeming with regional specialities - something for every taste and every
sensation!
••• Restaurants
Restaurants: you are sure to find what you are looking for:
the town's 35 restaurants will please all palates and every
budget! Near the sea or on the port, or in the town centre
- take your pick!
••• Seafood:
shellfish, scallops, mussels, cockles, sand eels, razor shell
clams, shrimps, sea bass, mackerel, sole and other riches
from the sea. Following the seasons, they will delight
hungry gourmets.
••• The Shellfish and Gastronomy Festival:
In late November, Ouistreham now celebrates this
tasty delicacy: sale and tasting of shellfish, cooking
lessons, regional market, visit to a fishing boat,
to the lighthouse and the port, events, concerts,
sea shanties… 25 tons of king scallops are sold to
20 000 visitors… make a date in your diary!
USEFUL INFORMATION
...Ouistreham is a real food
centre, with 3 weekly markets all through the year, 5 in
the holiday season, and a fish
market open every morning
- enough to satisfy all gourmets...
...Calvados is a region of good
food, rich in a large number of
regional delicacies: Camembert, Pont-l'Evêque, Livarot,
butter, cream, cider, Calvados
or the famous Caen-style tripe
- and not forgetting desserts
with the Teurgoule and Isigny
caramels...
King scallop recipe: in a hot
frying pan, simply fry the scallops on either side for 1 minute. Sprinkle with fleur de sel
and serve immediately. Cooked in this way, they are golden and crispy on the outside,
and meltingly soft inside... Bon
appétit!
You should try our local matelote: fish or shellfish from our
coasts, squid, cod and king
scallops, add potatoes and
onions, add fish stock, a litre
of cider and of course some
Normandy butter and cream.
Delicious!
Each year, the Tourist Office
organises the Gourmet Walk, a
pedestrian tour of Ouistreham
taking in gourmet visits to the
town's restaurants: give it a
try!

For Discoveries
A dynamic town with a rich business sector, Ouistreham
Riva-Bella has no shortage of historical sites, ranging
from the period of William the Conqueror to D-Day in
June 1944 , but also natural sites.
••• Le Bourg
This is the historic town centre in Ouistreham, enjoying a
remarkable listed heritage, including St Samson Church, a
jewel of Norman Romanesque architecture, and La Grange
aux Dîmes (12th and 13th centuries). In the vicinity, the
old courtyards of sailors' houses provides a typical and
interesting architectural feature.
••• The Port
A highly dynamic part of the town, both a fishing port,
marina and also a cross-Channel harbour with daily ferry
crossings.
••• The Beach
The Riva Bella seaside resort began increasingly to attract
visitors from the end of the 19th century. A century of
holiday-making can be seen in the wide range of villas
you pass by during a wonderful stroll through the town's
streets...
••• La pointe du Siège
A protected natural area of the Orne estuary, this chain of
dunes is the home of 271 listed species, bearing witness
to remarkable animal and plant life. An observation tower is
the ideal spot to admire the many birds living in the lagoons.
USEFUL INFORMATION
...Ouistreham Riva Bella has a
"3-flower" rating in the Towns
and Villages Flower contest...
...Almost 10,000 people live
here throughout the year...
...Almost 400 retailers and
small-businesses work in the
town: Ouistreham Riva-Bella's
3 districts provide remarkable
business dynamism from January to December...
...Saint-Samson Church contains
a stained-glass window recalling the exploit of the FrancoBritish commandos who came
to liberate our country in 1944.
There is still some "graffiti"
from the 19th century on its
walls, showing the boats that
could be seen in the port of
Ouistreham at that period.
...The Grange aux Dîmes
collected the tax ("dîme") due
to the abbess of Saint Trinity
in Caen...
...The canal, work on which
began in 1838, was opened to
shipping in July 1857...

For nature
Ideally located between the sea and the river, an exceptional environment is
provided by the Orne estuary, the Bois du Caprice, the salt marshes and the
banks of the canal and the river. Ouistreham is an invitation to relax and to
explore a wide variety of animals and plants.
• LA POINTE DU SIÈGE
This area of transition between the fresh water from
the Orne and the salt water from the sea is made up
of different natural environments. Here you can find
mudflats, dunes, a beach, salt meadows and a wood - a
real bird reserve, where a large number of plant species
also develop and enrich the region.
• THE CANAL – THE GREENWAY
Linking Ouistreham to Caen, the Canal follows the Orne
Estuary.
Today the right bank of the canal is occupied by buildings
required for the development of sailing. On foot, on roller
skates or by bike, you can take to the greenway on the
left bank, a real recreational area.
At the starting point of the greenway, a new circuit
linking Normandy and the Atlantic. Known as the Vélo
Francette, the signposted and uninterrupted 630 km
circuit stretches from Ouistreham to La Rochelle.
• MAISON DE LA NATURE
ET DE L’ESTUAIRE
Boulevard Maritime - 14121 SALLENELLES
Tel.: +33 (0)2 31 78 71 06
Website: www.cpievdo.fr
At the heart of the Orne estuary, the House of Nature
and the Estuary contains all the treasures of one of the
main protected natural areas on the Calvados coast. A
permanent exhibition with signposted footpaths and
cycling trails, some with educational signs or information
about the birds. Each year, there is a new programme
of events including temporary exhibitions, visits,
conferences and thematic workshops about the region's
natural environment.
• LE BOIS DU CAPRICE
A vast woodland area extending from the west of the
town on over 70 hectares.
Following the "Pilgrims' Path" through the wood from
east to west is an ideal way to explore the area. This is a
great place for family walks through a preserved natural
setting, and the chance to enrich your knowledge of
fauna and flora thanks to the many information panels.
