CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
Cumberland County Schools (CCS)
• 88 schools
• 78th largest district in US (out of 14,470)
• 53,998 students
• Second largest employer in Cumberland County (second to military)
We believe that our experience in educating military-connected students is a great strength.
Experience matters. The CCS serves the third largest concentration of military-connected
students in the world (11,147). We know that issues faced by military children are unique. The
CCS has services, programs, and people who understand the issues and work hard to find
solutions. We speak their language.
We know that CCS does a better job at offering the total experience through our Governed
Choice programs, our extracurricular opportunities, and our flexibility in working with
military students than any other school or district in this region.
From the arts to veterinary medicine, from athletics to Quiz Bowl, from technology to classical
studies, from International Baccalaureate to fire safety-unlimited opportunities exist for students
in the CCS. Whatever your living preference-rural, urban, suburban, we offer strong research
based programs. No other school district in the region offers the complete program in the arts
that is offered in CCS. An expansive program covering all mediums and venues-performing arts,
instrumental music including orchestra, dance from ballet to jazz, pottery, visual arts, and vocal
performance. CCS was the recipient of the Kennedy Center for Arts Education Network and
National School Boards Association 1999 Award for Excellence.
We believe that our diversity is one of our strengths.
Reaching 54,000 students from 42 different countries, speaking more than 80 native languages,
CCS understands globalization. Our task is to prepare students for the world in which they live.
The blending of cultures, the personal experiences of having lived around the world by many
students, and the cutting edge approach to teaching and learning are all part of a day in the life of
a student in the CCS.
We have expanded programs that support the unique challenges faced by military connected
students.
CCS is a member of the Military Child Education Coalition. Our superintendent has served as a
member of that organization since its inception and presently serves as the vice chair of the
board. CCS was awarded the first Pete Taylor Award for outstanding partnership between
Ft.Bragg and CCS. Through this association we offer programs designed to support the needs of
military children. Student 2 Student is on the campus of four high schools. CCS has an active
Military Child Task Force which developed a Local Action Plan addressing the needs of military
families. A School Liaison Officer is seated at every Board of Education committee meeting
and monthly meeting of the full Board. Every high school in CCS offers the Interactive
Counseling Center with approximately 60 counselors across the district who are considered
mobility specialists.
Unique opportunities:
• 48 choice options (k-12 including, but not limited to, the arts, classical studies, global
studies, communications, technology, International Baccalaureate, year round calendar)
• Expanded on line learning through the CCS Web Academy
• Specialized high schools (Cross Creek Early College /Howard Health & Life Sciences
High School)
• Strong partnerships with higher education (community college and university) affording
students college credit while in their high school programs.
• Competitive athletic programs including the traditional sports (football, baseball,
basketball, soccer, wrestling, track and field, cross-country, volleyball, softball,
cheerleading, golf, tennis) as well as the non-traditional sports of bowling and swimming.
CCS fields 35 teams per school throughout the school year. Nine of our high schools
compete at the 4A level for interscholastic competition. It is tradition that our schools
excel and compete at the state championship level in a variety of sports. This district is
regarded by many as the strongest level of competition in the state, especially in football.
The CCS is highly recruited by colleges, especially those within the ACC.
• Award winning JROTC programs in all comprehensive high schools.
• Graduates are accepted at prestigious, highly competitive colleges and universities;
receive nationally recognized scholarships; appointments to all military academies. Class

24 courses.
• 76 courses offered through Career and Technical Education, covering eight program

WOMACK ARMY MEDICAL CENTER
The Army Medical Center is committed to providing quality, cost-efficient care for "The
Total Army Family." Womack Army Medical Center, WAMC, is proud to serve the more
than 160,000 eligible beneficiaries in the region, the largest beneficiary population in the
Army.
The new 153-bed facility was completed and opened for patient care in 1999 and is a
total of 920,779 square feet. This new complex has increased the quality care and access
to beneficiaries by bringing more medical and specialized resources to Fort Bragg. Some
of the specialties added since the current facility became a medical center include
cardiology, hematology/oncology, pulmonology and obstetrics/gynecology and inpatient
psychiatry/behavioral health care.
VETERANS ADMINISTRATION MEDICAL CENTER
The Fayetteville VA Medical Center is a Clinical Core Level III facility, with 90 general
medical, surgical and mental health beds and a 69-bed long-term care unit. Fayetteville is
located in southeastern North Carolina in an area populated by more than 155,000
veterans in 21 counties.
Two of the counties served are located in northeastern South Carolina. The facility has
two community-based outpatient clinics located in Jacksonville and Wilmington, North
Carolina. The medical center has a full array of inpatient and outpatient services utilizing
the latest medical technology. Veterans requiring specialized services not available at
Fayetteville are referred to the Durham VAMC, or other VA facilities within VISN 6. A
magnetic resonance imaging unit located at Ft. Bragg's Womack Army Hospital is the
result of a VA/DoD agreement between Womack and Fayetteville VAMC. Additional
resources are shared with Pope Air Force Base and Womack Army Hospital under VA/
DoD sharing agreements to augment heath care delivery.
The medical center has affiliation agreements with several educational institutions
covering 24 different areas of study.

CROWN COLISEUM COMPLEX
The Crown Center
1960 Coliseum Drive
Fayetteville, NC 28306
910-438-4100
Minutes from home …miles from ordinary.
The hub of entertainment for southeastern North Carolina, the Crown Center complex
consists of five great facilities that host every type of meeting, convention, entertainment
and leisure activity you can imagine.
Since opening in 1997, the 11,000-seat Crown Coliseum has hosted major concerts,
family shows, WWE wrestling, motorsports, theatrical productions and major
conventions and graduations. The Southern Professional Hockey League’s (SPHL)
Fayetteville FireAntz and the National Indoor Football League’s (NIFL) Fayetteville
Guard call the Crown Coliseum home.
While the primary use of the 5,000-seat Crown Arena has been concerts, the newly
renovated venue has the capability to meet a wide range of activities including
Professional Bull Riding, rodeo, Ringling Bros. Circus, wrestling and a variety of
sporting events. One of the most notable occasions in the Arena’s 40-year history was the
2006 private reception for Queen Noor of Jordan.
The 2,400-seat Crown Theatre is home to the Broadway’s Best Series and Community
Concerts. The Theatre hosts an array of children’s and school performances and allows
for a more intimate atmosphere for theatrical events, concerts, and speaking
engagements. Recent renovations have included the addition of an atrium lobby and
balcony overlooking the lower floor.
Connected to the Coliseum, the Crown Hospitality Area features an elegant and
functional ballroom and meeting facility. The 11,250 square-foot area is easily adaptable
to smaller rooms for more intimate functions. The Crown Hospitality Area is a wonderful
facility for weddings, receptions, speaking presentations, proms or meetings.
The Crown Exposition Center is a 60,000 square-feet, full service exhibit and meeting
facility. Since opening in 1987, this versatile space has handled commerce shows, trade
shows and large and small banquets.
The Crown Center complex is home to the Cumberland County Fair. Held for 10 days
every September, the Cumberland County Fair is a traditional agricultural fair that
showcases youth and 4-H livestock shows and auctions. Dozens of carnival rides line the
midway while vendors offer cotton candy, snow cones, candy apples and many more
