The Merritt Oilers win State Runner-Up Class A Basketball Champions. The first time in
school history the boys’ basketball team has brought home hardware from the State Basektball Tournament.
In the first round the Oilers played #2 Velma Alma. Merritt being ranked #10 going into
the tournament a lot of people counted them out early. The Oilers kept their heads up and
played their hearts out. The Oilers fell behind in the first quarter but kept their heads. The
Oilers were still down at half time. In the third quarter the Oilers came out for blood but
not very many shots fell till the end of the quarter when Branson Daugherty hit a running
three. In the fourth quarter the lead kept switching and the Oilers had the lead with less
than 5 seconds on the clock. The Oilers won 52 to 50.
In the Semi-finals the Oilers played #5 Okarche. The Oilers came out early and got up
to a ten point lead. Okarche came back in the third quarter and closed the lead to one but
the Oilers never gave up the lead. In the fourth Merritt pulled away again ending the game
with the score of 50-39.
In the finals the Oilers would face their rivals for the fourth and final time this year.
Cheyenne took an early lead which the Oilers could never recover from. Cheyenne was
making all their shots while the Oilers had a hard time getting anything to fall. Ryan Garner got a steal from Austin Thrash in the fourth quarter, which got Merritt rolling but it was
a little too late. Merritt earned the silver ball this year. Seth Ashpaugh said “This is the first
of many state championship appearances for Merritt and the first time we win the gold ball
I’ll be there to see it.” (Boys story is continued on page 8.)

Bullying
Cyber
Bullying
Physical
Bullying
This is the most
obvious form of
bullying. In this type of
bullying, the instigator
attempts to physically
dominate another teen.
This usually includes
kicking, punching and
other physically harmful
activities, designed to
scare one being bullied,
and possible force
him or her to do
something.
April 5, 2012
Electronic bullying
is becoming a very real
problem for teens. This
type of bullying uses
instant messaging, cell
phone text messages and
online social networks to
humiliate and embarrass
others. This can be
especially devastating
to the people being
bullied, since they
cannot even find
a safe place in
the virtual
world.
Page 2
By: Latrisha Gartin
Many people retain horrible memories of high school, in
large part due to the bullying they experienced. Teenage
bullying is a very real problem in schools.
What is bullying?
Bullying includes behaviors that focus on making
someone else feel unaccepted, or focus on belittling
someone else. Bullying includes harassment, physical
harm, repeatedly demeaning speech and efforts to put
down another person. Bullying is active, and is done
with the intention of bringing another person down. It
is important to realize that there are different kinds of
bullying such as physical, emotional, and cyber bullying.
Is teenage bullying common?
Emotional
Bullying
This is even more
subtle than verbal
bullying. Teenage bullying
that includes emotional
methods aims at getting
someone else to feel
isolated, alone and may
even cause depression.
This type of bullying is
designed to get others
to put down the
person being bullied.
According to statistics from Family First Aid, about 30
percent of teenagers in the U.S. have been involved
in bullying, either as a bully or as a victim of teenage
bullying. Data suggests that teenage bullying is more
common among younger teens than it is among older
teens. Physical bullying is more common among boys,
and teenage girls often favor verbal and emotional
bullying. While boys are more likely to be involved in
physical altercations, girls are often the targets of nasty
rumors.
What are some of the effects of
bullying?
There are a number of effects that come with
teenage bullying. First of all, there are the obvious
physical problems and injuries that can result from
physical bullying. However, emotional, verbal and
cyber bullying can deeply affect teens as well. These
activities can lead to depression (and even suicide),
drug use.

For the second year, Merritt High School hosted Coaches

cognition with Merritt FFA and FCCLA, hosted the Change
Wars. There was a total of $6891.50 raised. There were
three different grade levels that competed with each other
to see which class could collect the most change. The levels
were Pre-K through 3rd, 4th through 8th, and 9th through
12th. The winners out of each level received a pizza party
In the elementary the third and fifth grade classes collected
the most change. In the high school there was a showdown
between the freshman and junior class. With a difference of
about six dollars, both classes won and will get their pizza
party on Friday, January 13th. Members of student council
also sold T-shirts, wristbands, and also took donations for
people who wanted to donate in memory of a loved one.

The students used a buzzer system to answer the question

The Road to State
Runner-Ups
By: Craig Price
The Oilers started their long road through playoffs at
home. Hosting their district the Oilers got the first round by
and in the championship played Arapaho. The Oilers held
back nothing going all out all four quarters. The Oilers beat
Arapaho 62-33.
Regional games were held at Arapaho and the Oilers
played Drummond. The Oilers won 75 to 50. Merritt and
Frontier faced in the regional championship at Okeene.
Beating Frontier put Merritt in the Area Finals to play their
rivals for the third time.
The area championship was a close game between
Merritt in Cheyenne ending with just a four point
difference. The game was the best game between the two
state championship teams. The game was back and forth.
Merritt thought they could pull it out being down two with
less than a minute to go. Merritt missed a shot Cheyenne
got the rebound and Merritt fouled. The Cheyenne player
made his free throws and with less than five seconds left
and the score 45-41 the Oilers knew that they had been
beat. Even with the third loss to Cheyenne the Oilers still
didn’t get their heads down.
The Oilers played Pond-Creek Hunter for their last
chance to make it to state. The Oilers didn’t hesitate they
got off with the first bucket and kept control for the whole
first half. The Oilers came out after half not as competitive
and P.C. Hunter took advantage pulling within five points
but the Oilers kept the lead and started to pull away in the
fourth quarter. Beating P.C. Hunter 56-40 was the Oilers
ticket to the Big House.
The Oilers win the District Championship.
The Merritt Oilers won the regional championship
The Oilers punched their ticket to state winning the area consolation
