n Tues., Sep. 30th, Mayor

Secretary of Labor Thomas Pérez,
issued an executive order to
expand and increase the living
wage.
The announcement was made at a press
conference held at St. Mary’s Park in Mott
Haven. Also in attendance were various
elected officials, including Assemblymember
Carmen Arroyo; Bronx Borough President
Rubén Díaz, Jr.; City Council Speaker
Melissa Mark-Viverito; and Councilmembers
Andy King, Fernando Cabrera and Ydanis
Rodríguez.
The order comes after the City Council
passed living wage legislation in 2012 which
required companies receiving more than one
million dollars in financial assistance from
the city to pay employees $10.00 an hour with
insurance, $11.50 without. The order boosts the wage rate to $11.50
with insurance and $13.13 without.
And while the original law applied to
roughly 1,200 employees, the new legislation

looks to reach thousands more.
“There’s a whole range of people who will
be reached,” said Mayor de Blasio. “Over five
years, our projection is 18,000 people will
benefit. 18,000 families will have a better
standard of living.”
He added, “4,000 of those will be in the
food and retail sector, where there’s long been
a need to increase wages and benefits.”
The 2012 bill focused its living wage
efforts on the construction companies and
agencies directly receiving financial benefits
from the city. The new order will apply the
same living wage requirement to include the
employees of commercial tenants of projects
that have received more than $1 million in
subsidies from the city.
U.S. Secretary of Labor Pérez praised the
decision, and criticized what he said was
fierce opposition in D.C. to such measures.

l martes 30 de septiembre el

Unidos Thomas Pérez, emitió una orden
ejecutiva para ampliar y aumentar el
salario mínimo.
El anuncio fue hecho en una conferencia de
prensa celebrada en el Parque St. Mary’s en
Mott Haven. También estuvieron presentes varios
funcionarios electos, entre ellos: la asambleísta

L
uis Taveras and Roselyn Reyes,
students at Bronx Compass
High on Lafayette Avenue,
consider themselves dedicated
musicians.
Both bassists starting their junior year at
Bronx Compass, Taveras and Reyes practice
their instrument four to five hours a day, are
focused on attending college and dream of a
future career in music.

That dream got a huge boost this past
summer, as Taveras and Reyes both received
full scholarships to study at a performance
program at the prestigious Berklee College
of Music in Boston from Jul. 12th to Aug.
15th.
The scholarships were made possible
through Amp Up NYC, a new collaborative
effort between the Department of Education
(DOE), Berklee and Little Kids Rock, an
organization that trains public school teachers
and donates musical instruments and resources
to school districts.
The two Bronx students described their
experience at Berklee as a life-changing
experience that boosted their confidence as
musicians.
“I got so much out of it,” said Taveras. “We
learned extensive music theory, and got to
perform several concerts.”
Taveras admitted to harboring some stage
fright prior to the Berklee scholarship.

“But now I can perform in front of an
audience much more easily,” he said. “I
learned to be a better musician, and also a
more social person.”
For Reyes, who had never been away from
home before the Boston trip, the summer
session was an intense experience. She
considered herself a shy person prior to that.
“It was pretty nervous to play in front
of people before, but I feel so much more
confident now,” Reyes remarked.
“And the classes gave me all this information
that musicians need to know to succeed.”

and Reyes during their time at Berklee, said
he immediately noticed the effect the summer
program had on his students.
“When they returned from Berklee, it
seemed like they had matured years in just
those five weeks,” said DiMasso.
Taveras began learning violin at age 5 and
started playing bass more recently. He said
enjoys a variety of musical styles, but prefers
to listen to hip hop.
Reyes loves rock music, and was inspired
to pick up her instrument by watching bassist
Kim Deal of the band Pixies.

minors.

T
he New York City Council
has teamed up with two
charitable organizations, the
Robin Hood Foundation and
the New York Community
Trust, to provide $1.9 million
to support legal representation
for unaccompanied immigrant
children facing possible
deportation.
The aid is needed, officials said, due to
a recently accelerated court process at the
New York Immigration Court.
Legal groups that represent immigrant
children were overwhelmed after a Justice
Department mandate in August sped up the
deportation process.
It has been reported that the number of
youth deportation cases handled by the court
has since swelled to 30 per day, from fewer
than 100 per month before the mandate.
Under the partnership, the City Council
will contribute $1 million, the Robin Hood
Foundation will provide $550,000 and the
New York Community Trust will allocate
$360,000.
The funds will be used to pay for lawyer
representation and other services for the
children from established providers such as
the Legal Aid Society.
“It’s a groundbreaking public-private
partnership,” said City Council Speaker
Melissa Mark-Viverito.
Earlier this month, Mayor Bill de Blasio
announced that representatives of several
city agencies would be available at the
immigration court to assist children with
enrollment in school and health services.

Championing the Charter
T
his past Mon., Sep. 29th, tennis
champ Andre Agassi joined
business and community leaders
and parents, in the ribbon-cutting
celebration for the opening of a new
five-story facility for Metropolitan
Lighthouse Charter School.
The school opened earlier this month at
180 West 165th Street in the Highbridge
section and serves 375 K-6 students, known
as scholars, with aims of growing to 700 K-12
scholars by 2020.
“I’ve had some of the greatest moments of
my career in New York,” said Agassi.
“I’m excited to return to encourage these
young scholars to be champions in their
own lives.”
The school is the latest investment
of the Turner-Agassi Charter School
Facilities Fund, an investment fund developing
facilities for high-achieving charter schools
throughout the United States. Agassi is the
Fund’s Co-Managing Partner and CEO of
Agassi Ventures.

Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School,
which has operated in two other Bronx

Located just blocks from Yankee
Stadium, the school is operated by
Lighthouse Academies, which serves
approximately 7,000 scholars at 18 schools
in seven states.
Agassi participated in a tour of the new
school and took in a student performance.
“It’s fitting for our new school to be located
at the corner of University Avenue,
as enabling all of our scholars to
succeed in school and graduate from
college is our central focus,” said
Khori Whittaker, President and CEO
of Lighthouse Academies.
“The school serves a community with
significant challenges, but also remarkable
promise,” added Bobby Turner, Principal and
Chief Executive Officer of Turner Impact
Capital. “We are helping these schools
make a transformative impact on the lives of
children here.”
The new facility includes 27 learningfriendly classrooms along with three science
labs, a music room, an art room and a computer
lab.
As the event came to a close, Agassi
encouraged students to strive and excel – and
let no obstacle deter them.
“A child’s zip code should not determine the
quality of his or her education.”

T
hey need jobs, not judgment.
More than twenty businesses and
organizations participated in a career and
internship fair at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual
and Transgender (LGBT) Community Center
on Thurs., Sept. 25th.
The annual event was led by the New York
State Department of Labor Commissioner
Peter M. Rivera. It served LGBT youths
specifically 16 to 24 years old seeking to start
their careers, and who may encounter unique
obstacles in their job search.
“We recognize that these young men and
women face unique challenges as they enter
the workforce,” said Commissioner Rivera.
“The message is simple. In New York, it
doesn’t matter what your race, religion,
sexual orientation or gender identity may be.
If you are ready to work, we want to find you
a job.”
Attendee Wade Murphy was on the hunt.
Last summer, the 18-year-old applied for
an internship at Westchester Community
College, but someone else was hired. But
when the new hire stopped showing up for
work after two days, Murphy was offered the
spot. “I was lucky to get the job,” he said of
his experience last year.
Now it was time to do it again.
The event sought to make connections
between
LGBT
youths
and
businesses under the
New York Youth
Works
program,
which encourages
businesses to hire
disadvantaged,
unemployed youth
in several parts of
New York State. By
hiring within this
group, businesses
earn tax credits of
up to $5,000.
To date, more
than
4,500
eligible
people
have been hired to
full or part-time
positions through the
program. Launched in 2012, it will continue
for four years, concluding on Dec. 31st, 2018.
“We are thrilled to partner with Governor
Andrew Cuomo and the New York State
Department of Labor for the second year at
this event,” said Glennda Testone, Executive
Director of the LGBT Community Center.
“These youth have so much potential.
Through events like this, they move closer to
fulfilling it.”

“We actually have a new policy,”
announced Byron Williams, who serves as
the organization’s Regional Recruiter. “Since
June of 2014, people can serve together as
same-sex couples.”
The LGBTQ Justice Committee of Make

ccording to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children
are spending an average of seven hours a day watching
television, on computer screens, on smartphones, on iPads
and tablets. Adults go on a lot longer than that. The gadgets
seem to have become an indispensable part of our lives. Here
is a challenge: can you and your kids survive a day without
technology?
Ah, for the days when all we – or, our
parents –worried about was the time spent
glued to the television screen. Now there are
more technology options than ever.
Research has shown too much media use
can lead to attention problems, difficulty
sleeping, eating disorders, etc. Never mind
the fact that some of the online areas our
children venture into are not where we’d
want them to be. Google and YouTube can
be veritable minefields.
Still, you can teach and support your child
in learning constructively with these new
technologies. There are many enrichment
and creative programs that serve to advance
your child’s learning and can help to expand
her world-view.
Anyone remember Sesame Street?
And you can still look to carve out a day
that will re-engage your family and friends
with real face time – and when the only
buttons you’ll push will be those you delight
in prodding as you get on each other’s
nerves.
Here are some tips in going tech-free.
Plan Ahead

day. Explain the benefits to unplugging for
a little while, and make sure you review the
rules. Will it be for a full 24 hours or just the
afternoon? Will this include the television,
the computer and the smartphone, or just the
one? Is there a planned activity or is the idea
just to spontaneously find new pastimes?
Plan Together
Be considerate of the interests of all your
family. This exercise is not intended to be
punitive, so don’t schedule the change
for a day when your daughter’s favorite
television show will be airing its finale,
or when your son will want to share his
birthday celebration with his Facebook
friends. Discussing it with your family

means it is a collaborative effort, and one that
is more likely to succeed as a result.

you have created for you and your family?
It is important to establish creative spaces in
our homes where we and our children are free
from technology. Consider removing gadgets
and electronic devices from your child’s room.
Make a space instead for books, pencils,
crayons, finger paints (you might want to find
different tools for the tween and teenage set).
Yes, it might seem radical at first, but give it
a try for a week or longer. They can still use
the gadgets in other rooms, but limiting usage
to certain areas reinforces the message that
spending time offline is important.
Plan for Yourself
Whether you’re parenting a preschooler,
tween or teen, you lead by example. So
if you’re serious about creating healthy
technology habits in your home, and limiting
how often Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
are visited, then guess what? You too will
need to follow suit. Not only are you living
by the same rules, you are opening up your
schedule to more time with each other.
So, feel free to start small. Talk with your
family about how important it is to maintain
a healthy, social life outside of the world of
television and social media. Plan first for a
tech-free morning and head to a local park or
museum.
Clean out a closet or two.
Read a book, bake some brownies.
Whatever your choice, just turn off, and
tune in – to each other.

he recorded the song “The
Rose” for the film of the same
name; the movie was her motion
picture debut.
Now, she is helping to ensure that they,
and all manner of flowers and produce, keep
blooming in the Bronx.
Academy Award-nominated, Grammy
Award-winning actress, singer and New York
Restoration Project (NYRP) founder Bette
Midler attended the special ribbon-cutting
held at the Willis Avenue Community Garden
in Mott Haven this past Thurs., Sept. 18th.
The event marked the completed renovation
of the garden.
“This space was the most used and the most
beloved of all the gardens that we acquired,”
said Midler. “People can grow what they want
– flowers, eggplants, tomatoes, peppers – and
take all of it home.”
The renovations, which took about four
months, were sponsored by The Perlman
Family Foundation. It was part of NYRP’s
garden adoption campaign, “Gardens for
Great New Yorkers,” in which individuals can
sponsor an NYRP garden’s transformation
and long-term maintenance.
“It is our responsibility as New Yorkers to
help ensure that all New Yorkers have access
to beautiful green spaces,” said Richard
Perlman in a statement. “We are honored to
support NYRP in bringing a garden to life
in Mott Haven, and we are thrilled to see the
Willis Avenue Garden and the surrounding
neighborhood flourish.”
The Willis Avenue Community Garden was
originally founded in 1997 by members of
the nearby Congregational Church of North
New York and local residents. Recognized
by NYRP as one of the city’s vital green
spaces, the organization acquired
the property in 1999 when it was

past weekend, as the Dominican
American National Roundtable
(DANR) concluded its 17th Annual
Leadership Summit at the U.S.
Capitol Visitor Center.
On Sat., Sept. 20th, DANR President
Francesca Peña welcomed attendees
and delivered remarks at the U.S.
Capitol Visitor Center.
“I would like to thank
you very much for joining
us in this open and frank
conversation to analyze
our challenges and to break
barriers to our success in
the United States,” said
Peña. “Meeting under one
roof to discuss challenges and
advancement strategies will help
us better prepare in our quest to
compete for political representation,
socio-economic opportunities and inclusion
at all levels in the U.S.”
The summit, sponsored by Ford Motor
Company Fund, The City University of
New York (CUNY), the Latino Leadership
Alliance of New Jersey (LLANJ), the Institute
for Latino Studies (ILS) and the National
Dominican American Council (NDAC),
began on Sun., Sept. 14th and concluded on
Sun., Sept. 21st.
The program included a series of activities
encompassing the DANR Fellowship Program,
a legislative day, board retreat meetings, and
dinner and awards reception at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel and a five-hour strategic plenary
forum.
The plenary, titled “Introspection: A Call to
Action,” included Dr. Silvio Torres-Saillant
from Syracuse University; Professor Alejandro
Benjamin from Bergen County Community
College; and Nestor Montilla from Lehman
College.
During a special video address,
CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor
and Secretary of the Board
of Trustees Jay Hershenson
noted
the
institution’s
enduring commitment to the
community.
“CUNY has graduated more
Dominicans and Dominican
Americans than any other
university in the United States
of America,” he observed. “It
is also the only higher education
system to house the CUNY Dominican
Studies Institute at City College that provides
research and data on the Dominican community in
the United States.”
Over fifteen speakers shared their thoughts
on critical issues facing Dominican-Americans
in the States, and offered recommendations to
tackle challenges.
President Peña appointed a committee of

its 17th Annual Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C.
scholars and leaders and commissioned
a “Position Paper/Blueprint for Action
Report,” highlighting discussion and
strategies; it will be released in December
2014.
During the summit, DANR board members
voted on a variety of resolutions including
approving its annual budget; deciding on the
venue for the next annual conference slated
to take place in 2015 in New York City at
CUNY; new board members; retaining
a fundraising consultant, and a series of
programmatic initiatives scheduled to be
implemented in 2015.

de Visitantes del Capitolio de Estados Unidos.
“Me gustaría agradecerles por acompañarnos
en esta conversación franca y abierta para
analizar nuestros retos y romper las barreras
para nuestro éxito en los Estados Unidos”, dijo
Peña. “Reunirnos bajo un mismo techo para
discutir los desafíos y las estrategias de avance

“I was reluctant to try bass because I
thought it was something that girls typically
didn’t do,” she remarked. “But when I learned
about Pixies, I saw that female bass players
were really cool.”
Amp Up NYC will become the largest single
private investment in a city’s public school
music education program — the donated
services and resources for the initiative are
estimated at $10 million.
Berklee and Little Kids Rock are contributing
teacher training and online courses, thousands of
new musical instruments and a “Modern Band”
curriculum to schools within the DOE system.
“In many cases, kids at city schools won’t
even have instruments to play,” commented
DiMasso.
“Initiatives like this make it possible for
school music programs to function, and really
makes a difference in children’s lives.”
Launched in March 2014, Amp Up NYC
will see over 200 teachers using the curriculum
with more than 15,000 students by this fall.
A Little Kids Rock spokesperson said
that the program is expected to grow to 600
schools and more than 60,000 students in
grades K through 12 over a three-year period.
The Modern Band curriculum teaches kids
to perform, improvise, and compose popular
musical genres on guitar, bass, keyboard,
drums, vocals and computers.
“Kids get engaged in making music more
easily if they’re dealing with songs and styles
that are familiar to them, such as rock and hip
hop,” said DiMasso.
The Bronx Compass music program even
features record production as one of its
components.

Ambos bajistas comienzan su tercer año en
Bronx Compass. Practican por cinco horas al día
su instrumento de cuatro, se concentran en asistir
a la universidad y sueñan con una futura carrera

Ese sueño tuvo un gran impulso este verano, ya
que Taveras y Reyes recibieron becas completas
para estudiar desde el 12 de julio hasta el 15 de
agosto en un programa de interpretación en el
prestigioso Berklee College of Music en Boston.

so it’s really exciting program for me,” said
Taveras.

El profesor de música de Bronx Compass,
Anthony DiMasso, quien se mantuvo en contacto con
Taveras y Reyes durante su estancia en Berklee, dijo
que de inmediato notó el efecto que el programa de
verano tuvo en sus estudiantes.
“Cuando regresaron de Berklee parecía que
habían madurado años en tan sólo esas cinco
semanas”, señaló DiMasso.
Taveras comenzó a tocar el violín a los 5 años
y con el bajo inició más recientemente. Dijo que
disfruta de una gran variedad de estilos musicales,
pero prefiere escuchar hip hop.
Reyes ama la música rock y se inspiró para elegir

we turn to Nilka Martell,
who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed of
how lovely our borough is, what it
offers, and how to lend a helping
hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt so
alive.”
As part of the National Coffee Month,
Lovie Pignata of Pelham Parkway featured
a “Morris Perk – Bring Your Own Mug”
coffee pop-up shop this past Sat., Sept. 27th.
People enjoyed free hot and ice coffee,
freshly squeezed limeade, and pastries.
“Morris Perk,” whose name was inspired
by the hit series Friends’ coffee shop
“Central Perk,” seeks to revitalize the
long-vacant spot at the corner of Holland
Avenue and Antin Place. It was once
occupied by neighborhood mainstay, Ben’s
Luncheonette.
Closed in the early 1980’s, Ben’s
Luncheonette not only served food and egg
creams, it provided the community with a
gathering space. The Abram family business
was a staple, a place where residents
gathered to talk about neighborhood issues
and world affairs.
The Luncheonette even helped form
the political career of Robert Abrams, the
son of proprietors Ben and Dotty. Robert
Abrams would serve as Assemblymember,

commemorate the Abrams.
In the spirit of the Luncheonette, Pignata
plans to serve up locally roasted global
beans, foods, snack and provide an area
for art classes, exhibits and a variety of
community-based activities in the same
space.
Saturday’s pop-up was the second held
at the location of the future site of Morris
Perk, and in between sips and conversation,
the community also enjoyed Jupiter Joe’s
Sidewalk Astronomy. Joseph Martínez,
a/k/a Jupiter Joe, bought his solar scope and
pointed towards the sun and its flares.
In order to move forward, Pignata
is seeking to reverse the zoning of the
commercial property. Since the space has
been vacant for over 30 years, the zoning
has been changed from commercial to
residential. She has collected hundreds of
signatures of locals to demonstrate how the
community supports this endeavor.
“For years, people have walked and
driven by this abandoned and cemented up
corner storefront,” explains Pignata. “The
pop-up made the intersection of Ben and
Dotty Abrams Way and Holland Avenue
feel like it was once again a vibrant part of
the community. We want it to feel that way
every day.”
Neighbors at last week’s pop-up not only
expressed their interest, but offered ways to
help. It was great to see how people were
working together to revive the area.
While it’ll be a few more months before
Morris Perk officially opens, Pignata will
continue to host pop-ups.

Some attendees were looking for jobs in the
creative field.
“I am looking for something to express
myself,” said Johnoi Shaw, who moved to New
York 18 months ago from Jamaica. “I moved
here right after high school because of my
sexual preferences,” he explained, stressing
that New York City is very receptive to the
needs of the LGBT community. He deemed
the job fair – his first – as “very informative.”
Many job seekers had life stories beyond
their years.
Mariah Lewis identifies as an 18-yearold transgender individual. Recently arrived
from Ohio, Lewis explained that she wished
to pursue a modeling career in the city.
Ultimately, however, she intends to become
a child psychologist and work with children
one-on-one. Her decision is rooted in her own
personal experiences.
“As a child, I was abused mentally and
physically by my guardian and nobody
believed me,” she recalled. “I was a gay male
and there wasn’t anyone to support me. I
don’t want any child to go through the same
things I did.”

years. We will ensure that it will continue to
be so for generations to come.”

Heard that you can get sick from the
vaccine? Not true. My colleague Carlos
Ortiz, M.D., a pediatrician, dispels this myth
and shares more about why the flu shot is so
important.

and it’s important to take
precautions to stay healthy this
fall, because the flu can leave
you seriously sick for up to two
weeks! Don’t waste your valuable
vacation days at home fighting a
fever or taking care of a family
member with the flu.
Susan Beane, M.D.: Can you talk
about what a vaccine is and
what it contains?
Carlos Ortiz, M.D.: A
vaccine is a medication—
usually injected into the
muscle—that we give in
order to prevent people
from getting sick. Usually
it has an antigen, which is
what causes us to produce
antibodies in order to
have protection against
an illness. They may also have antibiotics,
and they can also have preservatives that will
prevent the vaccine from spoiling.
Dr. Beane: Can you talk about some
common misconceptions about the flu
The best way to prevent the flu is to get
a flu shot. A CDC report estimated that the
vaccine prevented 6.6 million flu-associated
illnesses—a number equivalent to the

Dr. Beane: Should pregnant women get
the flu vaccine?
Dr. Ortiz: They should definitely get the flu
vaccine. It does provide a little protection for
the baby. Pregnant women are at higher risk
of death from influenza disease; about five
percent of pregnant women who get influenza
can die. They make up only one percent of the
population. In other words, you’re five times
more likely to die from influenza if you’re
pregnant than if you’re not pregnant.
Dr. Beane: And the elderly? Should they
get it too?
Dr. Ortiz: Definitely. The criteria for people
at risk are: less than five years of age, older than
six months of age, and older than 65 years of
age. Everyone should be getting the flu vaccine.
For older adults, their immune systems are not
as strong, so they need more help to produce
antibodies against influenza disease.

given. They may be exposed to other
influenza-like diseases that aren’t in the
flu vaccine. They may also be exposed
to the illness in
the two weeks
following
the

vaccine because they haven’t had
time to build up enough protection
against the disease. And not all
vaccines are 100 percent protective—
getting the vaccine is no
guarantee against getting
the disease. That makes it
critical for us to vaccinate
as many people as possible.

Dear Alex,
I would suggest you visit
your primary care physician
now. While the Common
Cold often does cause these
symptoms, you may also be
suffering from another, more
serious condition such as
Bronchitis or a Sinus Infection.
Two weeks is a long time to
be coughing and dealing
with a sore throat.
Bronchitis is a very common
respiratory illness, especially
in colder months, and causes
a cough that produces mucus.
Usually, the cause of Bronchitis
is the same virus that causes
the Common Cold. Bronchitis
with Dr. Peter Marcus
I have a troublesome cough, sore
throat, runny nose and puffy-looking
eyes. It hasn’t gotten any better. At
what point should I see a doctor?
often begins as just a cold
and then escalates into
something more serious and
uncomfortable. In many
cases, Bronchitis will go
away by itself, but your
doctor may want to prescribe
medication to relieve your
cough. Additionally, if the
cough is very severe, it may
be more than Bronchitis and
your physician may feel that
antibiotics are necessary.
A Sinus Infection occurs
when the sinuses become
inﬂamed due to infection.
As with Bronchitis, Sinus
Infections often begin with
the Common Cold. When
Common Cold symptoms
such
as
inﬂammation,
swelling and mucus block
nasal passages for a period
of time, it’s easier for bacteria
to grow and an infection
to develop. Viruses are the
most common cause of Sinus
Infections, but sometimes
the infection is caused
by allergies or bacteria.
Although a Sinus Infection
will often go away by itself,
it can also develop into a
major bacterial infection

complete with extreme sinus
pain, fever and chills. If
this happens, your doctor
will
probably
prescribe
antibiotics.
I hope this helps and that you

today. You’re better off
checking in with your doctor
now, than waiting until more
symptoms develop or your
current symptoms become
