Fun Fest / Field Day 2016

Pritzker Elementary School held its annual Fun Fest/ Field Day on Friday, June 10,
2016. For fifth through eighth graders, Field Day was held at Wicker Park, across the
street from the school. It featured many activities including basketball, volleyball
and kickball tournaments, a three-legged race and tug-of-war games.
Championships were then held for each sport.
Students from Kindergarten through fourth grade, on the other hand, celebrated Fun
Fest. Fun Fest was located in Pritzker’s gym and playground and featured snacks,
games and other activities. Teachers, parents and chaperones also joined in the
fun. Many students anticipated this important day all year, and describe it as "a day
off from school". Fun Fest / Field Day 2016 was a success for the students and
staff of A. N. Pritzker School.

This year's musical, "The Lion King" was a great success, and music teacher, Dr. Jenai
Jenkins , also has high hopes for next year's selections. Pritzker will have not one, but
two, musicals. Kindergartners through third graders will perform in Disney's Aristocats
KIDS , while the musical for students from fourth through eighth grade will be Shrek The
Musical Jr.
"I chose two musicals because we have a large number of primary students who enjoy
being in plays, so it just makes sense to have one play that is shorter and slightly easier
for younger students to fulfill the main character roles and have fun participating in the
number of choruses. The second title provides a more robust musical experience for
intermediate and upper grade students," explained Dr. Jenkins.
Dr. Jenkins and drama teacher, Nat Swift , work together to find shows that have fun
music, and that are developmentally appropriate (continued on page 2)

Musicals, continued
for the students. The two shows were chosen for
two main reasons, explained Dr. Jenkins. Shrek The
Musical Jr. and Disney's Aristocats KIDS provide a
large number of main character roles that include
many opportunities for ensembles. The shows were
chosen from Music Theatre International (MTI)
Showspace, the company that sells rights to schools
and theaters to perform the shows.
MTI describes Shrek the Musical Jr. as "...everyone's
favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits
on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true
acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale,
Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful
message for the whole family." Disney's Aristocats
KIDS is billed as, "Based on the beloved Disney
animated film, and featuring a jazzy, upbeat score,
Disney’s The Aristocats KIDS is a non-stop thrill ride
of feline fun, complete with unbelievable twists and
turns."

An Open Letter
Dear Pritzker community,
An e-mail sent on May 20th by our principal, Dr. Joenile S. Albert-Reese , included an attachment that was titled, “Parent Springfield Letter 2”. This
letter described how Chicago Public Schools is in a state of financial crisis and showed how the budget cuts might impact our school next year,
including losing art and other specials. While any of the potential cuts will be a huge loss to our school, we are writing this letter to express what
Pritzker’s fine and performing arts programs mean to us and why they should be saved.
We are writing this as a group because we all had the same reaction when we read the letter. Each of us was heartbroken when we imagined not
having art classes next year; a few of us even went home and cried. Our art, music, drama and dance classes are some of the things we love most
about Pritzker. For some of us, they are the only reasons that we go to school. These classes are ways for us to learn and practice skills -- whether
it’s how to do a pratfall or play a certain chord. They are times in our day when we can bond with other students who enjoy the same things we do.
Together, as a team, we sing the same chorus or move to the same rhythm creating something beautiful. Individually, sometimes, these classes are
our only chances to express ourselves. You can see who we are in what we choose to draw and how we choose to perform in front of you.
Some people will think that arts are not important in academics, but others will see it as a step forward in academics. It shouldn’t be a choice
between the two. The arts helps us do better academically, teaching us how to focus and encouraging us to think. For some of us, the arts may be
our chance to go to college. And the more of us who go to college, the better the chances are that we would get better jobs. The better jobs we
have, the better our economy will be. And perhaps, then, our children won’t have to imagine a day without arts in their schools.

2015-2016 Pritzker Yearbook : A Review

This year’s yearbook has many
great qualities and some features
that need improvement. Copies of
the yearbook cost $20.00, and you
can buy them in the main office.
The new yearbooks have many
more pictures than the ones from
previous years. There are also
many graphics and inspirational
phrases that enhance the look of
the pages.
Although the new yearbooks look
amazing, there are some traits
that need some work. One thing
that is upsetting some students is
the fact that there are no pages for
signatures. As a result, students
have decided to use the covers for
signatures instead. Another
criticism was mentioned by a
Pritzker parent who wished to
remain anonymous. Below is the
interview:
Reporter: Do you like the new
yearbook?
Parent : Yes, and I love seeing how
excited my kids get when they get
theirs.
Reporter: What do you like about it?
And what don't you like about it?
Parent : I like the variety of pictures,
but I think some of the candid
pictures are too small. Also, I noticed
that there was no picture of the
cheerleading team under athletics
(or even the whole book). Since they
participated at many of the games,
sponsored two dances, and were
very involved I was surprised they
weren’t included.
Reporter: Did you find anything
interesting in the yearbook?
Parent : I learned about clubs that I
didn’t know existed, so now I can
see if my children would want to join
them next year.
Reporter: Thank you for your time.
Some good things that have also
been mentioned are that certain
teachers have
changed
their
pictures, that because there are
more pictures more students are
included, and finally that for the 95%
club
nobody
was
cut
out
accidentally. Overall, the new
yearbooks had both good assets
and parts that could be revised for
next year, but was amazing anyway.

Staff vs. Students Basketball Game

Pritzker staff and 7th and 8th graders battled it out on the court in an
intense game of basketball on June 15, 2016. While the students gave it
their all, the staff won this year's game. Some players on the staff team
included Mr.Adrian McDaniel , Mr. Jerry Weissbuch and Mr. James
Roberson . Some students on the 7th and 8th grade team were Casey
Coates , Gabriel Montenegro , and Michael Castro .

COPA America and The History Behind It

The brightest stars in world soccer (football) are in the US this summer, and
they'll be playing for keeps.
The US hosts the Copa America Centenario from June 3rd- 26th in stadiums
across 10 cities. This is the first time the tournament is hosted outside of
South America. It will have 10 South American national teams joined by 6
Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football
(CONCACAF) countries – including the United States and Mexico – for a 16team tournament.
Copa America all started in 1916, when four countries came together
(Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and, finally, Uruguay). It was a double round robin
because there weren't a lot of teams.The first team to win Copa America was
Uruguay. After that, some Carribean countries joined along with Mexico, and
before you knew it, all the countries in America were playing in it. Now the Cup
is called Copa America Centenario because it’s been 100 years since it started,
making it the oldest international continental football (soccer) competition.

Pritzker 2015-2016 : A Retrospective

There have been many memorable events at
Pritzker this year. This little list is counting
down a few.
Students put true effort into this. The skits were
well planned and the rooms were decorated
accurately.
The school play
This school play was very memorable, for one,
the cast re-enacted "The Lion King" a timeless
Disney classic as well as a very successful
musical.
Dance Assembly
This was a very lively assembly featuring a
"Grease" themed dance, as well as a "Lion King"
mash-up.
Cross Country
"I liked it when the cross country team made it
to city championships" said Joseph Winn , fifth
grader. The boys cross country team as well as
two girls made it to city championships, it was
good for such a little known sport.
Girls Soccer
The newly introduced Girls Soccer team made it
to play offs!. "I'm happy that there's a girl's

Theatre Review: The Spongebob Musical

"The Sound of Music," "West Side Story,"
"Wicked," and..."The Spongebob Musical "?
That's right-- everyone's favorite sponge has his
very own musical and is playing now until July
10th at the Oriental Palace. Below is my
review.
Plot:
The plot starts off with a normal day in Bikini
Bottom. Then its citizens receive news that a
volcano is going to erupt and destroy their
home. The citizens all go crazy while trying to
solve the problem. Bikini Bottom is driven to
anarchy. Spongebob and his friends must save
Bikini Bottom from anarchy and the volcano
before it’s too late
Costumes :
If you are planning to watch this musical and
are excited about the costumes, then don’t get
your hopes up about anything big. The
costumes are mediocre, at best, to be honest.
The pants for Spongebob Squarepants are not
even square, and the Mr. Krabs costume looks
just like a normal human with crab claws. The
Sandy Cheeks outfit was nothing special either;
it looked nothing like her from the cartoon, and
was missing the helmet she always wears. The
Plankton and Karen costumes are just people
who are wearing the colors of the characters
with puppets. I did, however, like the Patrick
Star costume.
Props and Backdrops:
You can only explain this with one word:
spectacular! This musical has the best props
and set in the history of musicals, in my
opinion. When I was walking into the crowd, I
was greeted by the lights and glittery spectrum
of amazement. They captured the idea of Bikini
Bottom from screen to stage perfectly.
Music :
The music is very catchy and very recognisable from the
popular cartoon. The songs were composed and written
by many very famous artists and bands like Aerosmith,
John Legend, David Bowie, The Plain White Tees, and
more.
Overall, I liked the musical. It was fun seeing one of my
favorite childhood cartoons get a slightly darker ( but not
that darker) turn on the stage. If you are someone who
likes to watch stuff for nostalgic reasons, or just trying
to get a good laugh, you should definitely see this
musical.
Age rating: 8+ years
Overall rating : 4 out of 5 paws

Summer in the City
June not only marks the end of the school year
but is also National Candy Month and National
Aquarium Month.

Summer vacation has finally arrived. Here are
some fun things to do in the city.
National Candy Month

June might be National Aquarium Month,
National Fruits and Vegetables Month, and
Adopt-a-Cat Month, but is also a month to
celebrate confections big and small. Here is
a brief history of National Candy Month.
Nobody's exactly sure how the month was
honored with celebrating sweets, but it
could’ve been because of the very many
brands of candy that were invented in June.
In June, 1928, for example, the chocolate
coated licorice candy dubbed “Good and
Plenty” was invented by the Hershey
Company.
June 1904 was also the time when George
Cadbury, and his staff created the revolution
in chocolate bar history: Dairy Milk. It
contained a higher proportion of milk than
the rest of the chocolate candy bars. It
became the Cadbury company's best selling
product. The Reese's Peanut Butter Cup
frame was bought by the Hershey company
around the same time. So, have fun stuffing
your faces with sweet treats this month!

National Aquarium Month

As you may or may not know, June is National
Aquarium Month. It is celebrated in, well, everywhere!
Here is a short history on how it started.
It all started out with a young man named John
James Audubon. His life goal was to paint pictures
of all the birds in the world. He wanted to surpass the
work of Alexander Wilson who drew 435 life-sized
pictures of birds throughout America. Although John
James Audubon had no part in founding the society,
his widow, Lucy Audubon put it together and named
it after him. From then on the society grew and grew
until it started losing its members. So the only way
to fix it would be to merge with the Zoological
Society of America. The newly merged groups
became the Audubon Zoological and Aquarium
Society.

Marissa Meyer: A Mix of SciFi and Fairy Tales

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines anime as a style of animation originating in Japan
that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled
plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes. We asked Pritzker students what their
favorite anime is, and here are our results.

Um, so there was a bubblegum
bubble contest between a friend
of mine and I. Uh, so I blew a
huge bubble (I know I'm boss),
and it kind of got stuck in my
hair. So, how do I get it out?
I was role-playing as a ninja with
my BFF and I kicked my sister's
poster. Long story short, it
ripped, how do I fix it and erase
all evidence?

Marissa Meyer was born in Tacoma, Washington on
February 19, 1984, and currently is 32 years old. She has
written over 12 books, the majority surrounding her
famous The Lunar Chronicles series. The first book in the
series, Cinder, has received the Noteworthy Titles for
Children and Teens, YALSA Teens' Top Ten, Indiana Young
Hoosier Award Master List, Bank Street Best Children's
Book of the Year, Florida Sunshine State YR Award ML,
and more.
I have read The Lunar Chronicles and it has changed the
way I see science-fiction. The series is based on wellknown fairy tales, but with a futuristic twist to them.
Winter is my favorite of all the books because of the
conflict between humans and the Lunars, as well as the
surprises that are thrown in on every page. Meyer
managed to fit in action, romance, and suspense into the
book, which are all the key elements that I like to see in a
story.
Her book Fairest was also a memorable read. Obviously,
from the title, it seems that Queen Levana has some
similarities as the Evil Queen from Snow White. This story
is basically Levana’s side of the battle, from Luna or the
Moon.
So, If you are hungry for a good book, take a trip to your
local library and pick up some of the many books by
Marissa Meyer.
