The PLAIN butter tart is the foundation of the butter tart
experience. The classic butter tart filling contains butter
along with brown sugar, corn syrup, egg and vanilla. While
some RAISIN fans will insist raisins belong in butter tarts the
popularity of plain butter tarts demonstrates that raisins aren’t
for everyone. The NUT butter tart (typically pecans but
sometimes walnuts) are added to the mixture or added on top are
yet another dimension of ooey-gooey goodness. Some bakers will
go the extra mile and create their own seasonal specialty tarts, like
pumpkin butter tarts, chocolate butter tarts, maple bacon butter
tarts and more.

A great butter tart has a soft and flaky crust that
forms a bowl around the filling. It’s just firm enough to
allow you to cradle the tart between your thumb and
finger as you gently devour it. A good crust doesn’t
explode on the first bite but rather holds the contents of
the tart like a spoon as you savour every last nibble.
JUDGE FOR YOURSELF
Butter tarts are uniquely Canadian and arguably Kawarthas
Northumberland is the heartland for the best tarts in the
country. It’s not hard to take pride of this position when
several bakers in our region have brought home highest
honours of 1st and 2nd place ribbons from Canada’s Royal
Agricultural Fair, the Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival, as
well as leaders from our own Annual Butter Tart Taste-Off.
Judge for yourself, you can experience winners from over
40 makers throughout the region.

“TO YOUR TART’S CONTENT”
1. Sturgeon/Balsam Lake Route
Muskellunge are a fish distinctive for their elongated
bodies, great size, and sharp teeth. Butter tarts are a
dessert treat distinctive for their round shell, ooey
gooey goodness and general deliciousness. Put
the two together around two big bodies of
water connected by the Trent Severn
Waterway, and you have the sweetest of mini
tours. There’s even the promise of North
America’s biggest shoe store in
Bobcaygeon to keep you shopping and
sampling to your tart’s content. Bring your
family, friends or just yourself and cycle,
canoe, hike, fish, golf or even houseboat.
Visit our farmers markets, galleries,
theatres and unique art studios all which
dot along the Kawarthas Northumberland
Butter Tart Tour.

The name “Kawartha” comes from the area’s First
Nation Peoples, in whose language it means “land
of shining waters.” The name “Butter Tart Tour”
comes from the area’s many bakers and suggests

This mini tour allows for both North and South
travel options from Peterborough. The North route
travels up the scenic Otonabee River through
Lakefield and Young’s Point where you can watch
the boats as they merge through Lock 27 on the
Trent Severn Waterway and into the kissing point
of the two Buckhorn lakes. The South route travels
down into Millbrook and Bailieboro where
award-winning tarts await.

3. Tart Tour just off the 401
Don’t have a lot of time but do have a craving for homemade butter tarts…
like mom used to make? You will be amazed at what small town Ontario has
to offer. Where else will you find Canada’s only “atmospheric” theatre, or
Ontario’s best salmon rivers? Port Hope of course. Better have one pail for
tarts and one for sand when you visit Cobourg’s bakeries and its all-sand
beach. The decadent gluten-free bakery at Ste. Anne’s Spa north of Grafton,
one of Canada’s most luxurious spas is well worth a visit. Swing up to the
eclectic town of Warkworth and enjoy a tart with a healthy dose of art or fly
down to Presqu’ile Park and count the hundreds of species of our winged
friends. Butter Tarts will never be far from where you are.
