A First for a Graduating Class: Parking Lot Venue
The 202 members
of this year’s graduating class may have been
the 48th class to receive
their diplomas from York
Suburban High School,
but they also established
a “first.” They were the
first to hold commencement exercises on the
school parking lot.
Because of the installation of artificial turf
on Dick May Field, the
traditional, outdoor venue
was not available for the
graduation ceremony. Class members did not

want to hold the exercises
indoors, unless inclement
weather forced them to
do so.
The compromise was
2,500 folding chairs set
up on the parking area
between the high school
and the Ronald Provard
Education Center (administration building). With a bright sun
and temperatures in the
mid-70s, the weather
cooperated to provide
a perfect setting. The
dais stretched across the
walkway to the administration building

YS Adopts
$39,844,662 Budget
The York Suburban School Board has approved
and adopted a budget of $39,844,662 for the 200708 school year, beginning July 1, 2007. The current
year’s budget is $37,294,982.
The new budget calls for a 17.688 millage rate, a
five percent increase for the current 16.834 millage
rate. That means taxes on a property in the York
Suburban School District valued at $100,000 would
be $1,768.
Major increases (almost 69 percent) in the budget
are related to contracted salaries and benefits for all
employees totaling more than $27,000,000. Debt
services increase by 8.79 percent this coming year and
special education costs rise by 4.92 percent to almost
$2,000,000. The budget calls for an operating reserve
of $100,000.
Public meetings were held in January through
April in advance of the adoption of the budget.
Class of 2007 commencement ceremonies were held on the parking lot.

During the Coffee

RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER
Good Luck York Suburban
It has been my great privilege to have worked in the York Suburban School
District. After 38 years in education -- 20 of them at YS -- I have come to realize
that very few districts have that special blend of ingredients that make districts
outstanding places for students, teachers, parents and
community members. York Suburban has had, and
continues to have, that perfect blend of ingredients. They are:
• A School Board which puts children and their welfare at the center of each decision.
• An administrative and teaching staff that is focused,
hard-working and professional in nature.
• A support staff that take pride in their work and enjoy
being around children.
• Students who come to school to learn.
• Parents who value education.
• Community members who support the schools
financially and participate in school events.
Dr. William Hartman, Jr.
These are the ingredients of which great districts
are made; however, just having the ingredients is not enough.
It takes trained professionals working together to properly mix and blend the
ingredients into the ideal recipe. This takes great skill. We are fortunate that the
teachers of York Suburban have that skill.
Over the years the quantities and qualities of various ingredients have shifted
and changed. What has kept us York Suburban has been the professionalism of our
staff who know how to adjust the mixture so that a well-rounded, well-educated,
and well-balanced graduate is produced year after year.
It was my good fortune to have worked in this fine school district and seen the
"chefs" at work first-hand. After observing their skills, I'm confident that York
Suburban will have many generations of continued success.
Goodbye and good luck.
Dr. William R. Hartman, Jr.
Retiring Superintendent
Meet the New
Superintendent
It is with a great deal of pride that I begin my tenure as Superintendent of the York Suburban School
District. In order to have
the opportunity to learn
more about your educational priorities and concerns, I have scheduled a
series of informal Coffee
& Conversation with the
Superintendent meetings
on the following dates:
• Tuesday, July 17 -- 9 to
10:30 a.m.
• Wednesday, August 1
– 1 to 2:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, August 14 – 5
to 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Kate Orban
All of the meetings
will be held in the Ronald Provard Education Center
located behind the high school. Please e-mail Wendy
Erwine ([email protected]) if you plan to attend and indicate which date. I hope your schedule
will allow you to spend some time with me.
I am also pleased to announce the formation of the
Superintendent’s Lay Advisory Council (SLAC). The
Council will consist of parent representatives from
each building as well as community and business
representatives. The Superintendent’s Lay Advisory
Council will meet a minimum of four times a year
and its members are asked to make a two-year commitment.
