Welcome to our new
season at Eden Court
There really is so much to choose from this autumn/winter season
at Eden Court. The biggest (and daftest) show of all is of course
our fabulous, festive, family Panto, Peter Pan. For the best seats
on the best days it’s first come first served so don’t delay booking
your tickets. However, Panto is only 1 of around 100 different
shows and there’s so much on offer between now and then.
Read on and see for yourself. Enjoy!
Colin Marr
Chief Executive
If you’re new to Eden Court or even if you’re a
regular visitor, here are some interesting facts
about what we do and our history.
We’ve got two theatres staging a huge variety of
drama, dance, music, comedy and talks – that’s
what this brochure is all about.
We’ve got two of the comfiest cinemas you could
ever hope to visit screening everything from the
latest Hollywood releases to the best of world
cinema and documentaries. You’ll find our full
programme in the ICA magazine every month.
We’ve got two studios where we run over 60
classes a week in drama, dance, singing and
film making. Whatever age you are and whatever
standard you are at we’ll have a class for you.
Details of all the classes are in our Eden Court
CREATIVE brochure.

Arthur Miller’s gripping and passionate drama ranks
as one of the classics of our time.
Joe and Kate try to keep alive the memory of their
son Larry, who disappeared in the second world
war, by planting a tree in his honour. But Larry’s
disappearance is not the only part of the family’s
past that they can’t put behind them.
Not everybody has forgotten the court case or
the cracked engine heads Joe’s factory produced,
which caused the deaths of twenty-one pilots.

In 1917, at the height of the First World War, the
poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon was admitted
to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh,
officially for treatment for shell-shock, but in truth
because he had published his ‘Soldier’s Declaration’,
denouncing the conduct of the war by the British
establishment. There he met the severely shellshocked Wilfred Owen, already making his first
tentative steps as a poet.

By the time Owen was killed in action, a year later,
he had written what is now considered to be the
finest poetry of the Great War. Stephen MacDonald’s
play, which premiered in Edinburgh in 1982 before
transferring to London and Broadway, examines how
the two poets’ friendship unlocked Owen’s genius.
Performed by star cast featuring Trudie Goodwin
(The Bill, Emmerdale) and Robert Jack (Gary:
Tank Commander) and with all the tension of a
taut thriller, All My Sons is a powerful drama that
crackles with emotion and excitement.

14+ SOME SWEARING
Written and performed by Victoria Beesley
Directed by Joe Douglas
When I was 8 years old, my dad set up a charity to help people in
danger escape the war in a place called Bosnia. He brought fifty
of them over here on big coaches. We moved into an old boarding
school with these refugees, to help them settle in. We lived there
for four months. It was brilliant - there was a playground in my front
garden, we had lots of visitors, people were always feeding me and I
learnt to ride a bike! But the best thing about living there was meeting
my friend Selma.
My Friend Selma is the remarkable real-life story of one girl’s journey
from war in Bosnia to safety in the UK. It is the tale of an incredible
journey, a world turned upside down, loss, friendship, courage
and conkers.
Created with support from Creative Scotland
Scottish national hero or scandalous predator?
Hector is based on the story of ‘Fighting Mac’, Sir
Hector MacDonald, and an exploration of an elitist
English class system, its attitude to global press, and
the devastating consequences of abusing its power.
Rising from humble beginnings through the ranks
of the British Army, to become a knight of the
realm, hero of the Battle of Omdurman and Queen
Victoria’s favourite general. A Scottish hero.
Allegations of liaisons with young boys surface and
MacDonald is forced to return home.
Rather than face a court martial, he shoots himself in
a Paris hotel. But was he guilty? Or was he the victim
of a plot fabricated by an English establishment to
remove a Gaelic- speaking upstart who got above
himself?

A real Highland collaboration, this terrific one

directed by talented Eden Court staff members
Catherine MacNeil and Melissa MacDonald.
Music by renowned Highland musician Bob Pegg.
In 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine vanished
into the mist on their final push toward the
unconquered summit of Everest. They were never
seen alive again and passed into mountaineering
legend. Whether they were the first to climb the
mountain is a debate that still rages. This one-man
play, written and first performed at the Edinburgh
Fringe by actor and mountaineer John Burns, poses
the question; what if Mallory had survived the
mountain, what ghosts would have haunted him?
…a fine show - and a worthy tribute to one
of the heroes of mountaineering.

Adapted from the Frank Capra film by Tony Palermo
Directed by Guy Retallack
The iconic story of idealist George Bailey, whose
dreams look set to be dashed by small-town
scandal and big business. Alone on a bridge, he
decides that everyone would be better off without
him. Or would they? It falls to hapless guardian
angel, Clarence, to try and save him.
In a new production that premiered to excellent
reviews in London last year, the magical story
of Frank Capra’s iconic film is retold as a radio
play, complete with sound effects created live on
stage. This loving tribute to the golden era of the
wireless is a fresh take on a heart-warming and
timeless classic.

SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE
Inspired by SE’s collaboration
with Swedish dance company
Andersson Dance, this workshop
is aimed at dancers and musicians
aged 14+. After unlocking new
ideas to help posture, technique
and performance in both
disciplines, the two groups of
musicians and dancers come
together to prepare a short
performance for friends
and family.
J.S.Bach Goldberg Variations [arr.Sitkovetsky]
It started life as a study for harpsichord; a simple
aria, and a set of 30 variations. Today, it’s not only
one of the most well-known of Bach’s works - it’s
one of the most interpreted.
Now, in 2015, Jonathan Morton and Örjan Andersson have come together to create their own.
With 11 musicians and 5 dancers moving together
as equal partners, the audience is given the singular experience of musician and dancer performing
as one, casting a 21st-century light on the notes
and the spaces between them. Should we simply
listen to the music, or can we move?
Something borrowed: His
Arpeggione Sonata, originally
written for bowed guitar, now
transformed into a work of
melodic joy for string orchestra,
and virtuosic viola prowess.

mother and fails to return, the goblin deposits
their baby on the doorstep minus its head! Before

There’s a good reason why The Lark Ascending

there’s more than one way to play it, and tonight
the RSNO’s own Katherine Bryan brings the fresh,

Andy was once a 6’4”-tall professional basketball
player, until a tree fell on him. But, of course, change
is an inescapable part of the human condition. Why?
Is that fair? Some changes are good, some bad. Why
can’t they be more clearly labelled? How did we end
up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows
go? If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy
will teach you how to cope with the changes we
have seen and the changes yet to come. Contains
mild peril.

A high-octane cabaret featuring Bunraku Puppetry
and character comedy for discerningly twisted
adult audiences. Flabbergast Theatre have been
travelling the land with Boris & Sergey spreading
riotous exploits, malarkey, molestation and mirth for
three years. You will simultaneously love, hate and
pity Boris and Sergey as their attempt to scam the
general public ends with a shocking twist. Come see
the darker side of puppetry with a poker game like
no other.
He’s also totally sick of people calling his
comedy “dark”

Shona Reppe is Magic Sho!
ABRACADABRA!
Magic Sho waves her magic wand
and a small white rabbit suddenly appears.
She saws the rabbit in half,
She levitates him under a silk handkerchief,
She puts him into a velvet bag and smashes
him into a million pieces with a hammer before
(magically) making him whole again*
It’s all going really well - so why does the rabbit
look so unhappy?
KENNY WAX FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT LTD. & NICK BROOKE LTD.
Ministry of Science Live is not your ordinary science
show - it comes with a bang. It comes with a whoosh.
But most of all is comes with a hovercraft built live
on stage. Oh, and a Human Cannon too! From the
creative team behind Brainiac Live and a whole
load of other explosive science shows, this new
production takes an anarchic approach to science
communication whilst looking at the inventors and
engineers who have shaped and inspired the modern
world that we live in. From Liquid Nitrogen frozen
flowers to Hydrogen Bottle Rockets. From Buzz
Aldrin to Virgin Galactic. From a cat food tin to the
Hovercraft. From the discovery of Methane to the
invention of the Battery. Join the super talented
presenters and the voiceover from above (X Factor’s
Peter Dickson) as they take you on a journey using
brilliantly designed demonstrations with a few loud
bangs to lead the way. Fingers in ears advised!

Adapted for the stage with songs and lyrics by
David Wood
The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy
are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be?
What they certainly don’t expect to see at the door
is a big, stripy tiger!
This much loved tale of a tiger creating tea time
mayhem is brought vividly to life on stage in a show
packed with oodles of magic, sing a long songs and
clumsy chaos.
David Wood OBE is undisputedly the country’s
leading writer and director of plays and musicals for
children. His many successes include Fantastic Mr
Fox, The Gingerbread Man, BFG, The Witches, Meg

Folk-Noir balladeer Rachel Sermanni returns
to Eden Court following the release of her new
studio album, Tied To The Moon. The album was
written in March 2014, in an apartment above a
pottery studio deep in the sticks of Nova Scotia.
Bookended by her routine of going for a morning
run in the surrounding ten acre forest and silent
afternoons of coffee and pistachios, Rachel would
sit, in total solitude; writing; reading; playing music.
Back in Scotland she enlisted the help of Colin
Macleod (recording and production), Jennifer
Austin (piano, organ and backing vocals), Gordon
Skene (bass and cello) and Louis Linklater (drums)
and tracked all takes, live, in Colin’s living room in
the Scottish Highlands.

Written and directed by Ian McCalman
Featuring Gaelic Singer Mairi MacInnes
Originally part of Homecoming Scotland, Far Far
from Ypres has a cast of singers who remain on
stage throughout the performance, singing the
‘trench’, ‘marching’ and Music Hall songs of the
time. From that chorus, groups and soloists come
to the middle of the stage and perform songs, both
contemporary and traditional, about the Great War.
The narrator brilliantly links the songs with stories
about the hero of the show, Jimmy MacDonald,
who was born in “any village in Scotland”. It tells
of Jimmy’s recruitment and training then follows
his journey to the Somme and back to Scotland. It
would not be a Scottish tragedy without laughter,
so there are also stories of humour and joy that
take this production well away from the path of
unremitting gloom. Since the first performance
performers have included Dick Gaughan, Barbara

Wildlife TV Presenter, adventurer, naturalist and
writer Steve Backshall takes us on a tour of the real
life expeditions that have inspired his novels The
Falcon Chronicles. It’s a wild journey, illustrated
with photos and films from his expeditions from the
Arctic to the Antarctic, from the tundra to the top
of the world’s highest peaks, and from the depths of
the rainforest to the bottom of the sea. This talk is
suitable for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages from eight
to eighty. There will also be an extended Q&A at the
end of the show.
Colin Cloud is a forensic scientist who mixes mind
magic and brain science with his love of Arthur
Conan Doyle’s works - he’s the closest thing around
to the real life Sherlock Holmes. Mind reader and
spoon-bender Uri Geller described him as one of the
greatest thought readers of all time.
In 2014, Colin became the runaway success of
the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with 23 sold out
performances and multiple 5 star reviews.

Broadcaster, traveller and adventurer, Ben
Fogle has rowed the Atlantic Ocean, crossed
Antarctica on foot and run across the Sahara.
On television he’s presented, New Lives in the
Wild, Extreme Dreams, Countrywise, Harbour
Lives and Through Hell and High Water and he
has written six Sunday Times bestseller books.
A unique story teller and comedian - described as the
Ranulph Fiennes of British Climbing by the Today Program
- Andy climbs in some of the most inhospitable places on
earth, from Greenland to Alaska, Patagonia to Antarctica. In this new tour, he takes up where his last finished, arriving
in Antarctica dreaming of climbing the ‘hardest mountain
in the world’, before further cold adventures in Alaska,
Norway and Patagonia. As with all of Andy’s shows, Cold
Mountain is a mash up of thoughts and experiences, good
times and bad, laughter and maybe tears, but certainly out
of this world.
Using film footage and stills, Ben tells his story
and explains how this self-confessed urbanite
became drawn to, and so enamoured with,
adventure, travel and the harsh challenges
associated with a life lived in the wilderness.

Atmospheric seascapes of remote
Scottish anchorages contrast with
colourful expressive European
landscapes. A voyage in layers of paint
from a local Black Isle artist.
Artists of all abilities are invited
to come & exhibit in our annual
Winter Exhibition. The theme
this year has echoes of Peter Pan
with the exhibition seeking work
showing the magical beauty of
the Highlands.
