Tindale & Etherley Lane
allocated flood defence funding
Marie and Sam in Berlin, Germany.
More than £4m is to be
spent on flooding prevention schemes in County
Durham over the next 14
months.
Tindale Beck has been
allocated £343,000 for
2014/15; a scheme which
will be led by the Environment Agency, while
Etherley Lane has been
allocated
£10,000
for
2013/14 and a further
£50,000 for 2014/15.
Durham County Council
put in a number of successful bids for funding to
the Environment Agency,
which means important
work to protect communities from flooding across
the county can go ahead.
Two students from St
John’s School & Sixth Form
College represented the UK
at a conference in Berlin on
the 7th and 8th February,
as part of the ‘Make IT
Safe’ programme.
Alongside ECPAT UK & the
European
Commission’s
'Daphne' programme, Marie
and Sam, both Year 12
students, travelled by train
to Luton before flying to
Berlin to work alongside
their peers from the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium
and Germany.
Presentations were given
by leading experts in the
field of internet safety and
child exploitation.
Following the conference,
Marie and Sam will be
feeding back to the Digital
Leaders in school to help
develop workshops and
resources to be used in
school to make students
more aware of the dangers
of being online and how to
protect themselves from
these dangers.

“Many people here in
County Durham have also
experienced the disruption and difficulties that
flooding can cause and
this is something we want
to try to prevent in the
future.
“This funding will allow
us to go ahead with important schemes which
are designed to protect
towns and villages from
flooding.
“It is particularly pleasing
that, at a time when
all councils are facing
financial difficulties, we
have been able to secure
the funding for this work
which will bring huge
benefits to local people.”

The schemes were identified during investigations
by Durham County Council
following
significant
flooding in a number of
areas caused by extreme
rainfall in 2012, with
Tindale bypass becoming
so flooded that the road
had to be closed to traffic.
Cllr
Brian
Stephens,
Cabinet
member
for
neighbourhoods and local
partnerships at Durham
County Council, welcomed
the funding.
He said, “We are currently seeing how flooding
is having a devastating
effect on people’s lives
and businesses in the
south of England.

The Mayor of Bishop

‘absolutely fabulous’.
Head teacher Wendy Gill
commented, "We were
delighted to be involved in
the iSingPOP project. From
the very start the children

ed to sing. The song lyrics
underpinned
Christian
values and helped give the
children positive messages
about how to live their

“The

Fundraising night
SDEA Business Adviser, Neil Pearson with Ashley Fenwick, Director of Lifestyle
Properties.
Lifestyle
Properties,
located on Bishop Auckland’s Newgate Street,
have been added to the
ever growing list of businesses that are benefiting
from Bishop Auckland and
Shildon Security Grant
Scheme, working closely
with the Bishop Auckland
Crime Prevention Team
in a bid to combat crime
and anti-social behaviour
which can have a devastating impact on small businesses.
Ashley Fenwick, Director of
Lifestyle Properties, made
the decision to relocate
the business to Newgate
Street. This move saw the
rise of the impressive shop
front with the hope of in-
creasing the profile of the
business and benefitting
from increased passing
trade. Ashley is now operating from her new
business premises which
have seen a significant improvement in its security
thanks to the support of
the AAP, Bishop Auckland
and Shildon Security Grant
Scheme and South Durham
Enterprise Agency.
Ashley said, “I initially rang
the council looking to see
if there was any funding
available for my shop front,
this is when I heard about
the Security Grant Scheme
that was available to me.
“I thought this was a good
opportunity to beef up
the security on our new
property. This has given
all the staff peace of mind
and an increased sense of
security.”
The scheme which has been
established to provide increased security measures
and “target hardening”
improvements
to
SME
businesses in the Bishop
Auckland and Shildon area.
Businesses which engage
with the scheme and
benefit from both the
crime prevention survey
and potential grant funding
toward a range of security
improvements which can
effectively deter criminals and thereby reduce
the negative impacts that
crime has on the business,
its staff and customers.

Sentence cut for man who
encouraged friend’s suicide
A man who was jailed for
supplying the petrol and
cigarette lighter for his
suicidal friend has had his
sentence cut on appeal.
Kevin James Howe was
handed a 12 year term
for assisting attempted
suicide when he appeared
at Durham Crown Court in
October.
Thirty-year-old
Stephen
Walker
suffered
over
90% burns when he set
himself on fire at his home
in Walker Drive, Bishop
Auckland, last May.
Howe,
of
Cheesmond
Avenue, Bishop Auckland,
had been drinking heavily
with Mr Walker on the night
of the suicide attempt.
Walker said he wanted
to set himself on fire and
Howe rode one-and-a-half
miles on his bicycle to a
petrol station to buy the
fuel.
Despite being warned not
to do so by a concerned
neighbour, he then gave
the fuel and lighter to his
friend.
Witnesses reported seeing
flames one foot above Mr
Walker’s head after his
body caught fire.
Lord Justice Treacy said
Mr Walker had been left
in a “dreadful” condition,
but Howe had shown no
remorse.
Instead, he told police:
“I will never speak to him
again for what he’s put me
through.”
But after an appeal last
month, 20 year-old Howe
has had his sentence cut
to 10 years by the Court of
Appeal.
Howe’s barrister, Mark
Styles, argued that his
actions were not premeditated, but had happened
on the spur of the moment,
when in drink.
Giving
judgment,
the
appeal judge concluded:
“Notwithstanding
the
dreadful consequences for
Mr Walker, this sentence
was too long.”
Students formed the shape of a heart for charity.
150 pupils from Bishop Barrington School formed the
shape of a heart to raise
funds for the British Heart
Foundation recently.
The students wore red and
each brought in a £1 donations. Around £150 was
raised in total.
Teachers involved have
also raised money for
the charity in the past.

teacher, walked a section
of Hadrian's Wall in 2011
after her father in law
received treatment for a
heart problem.

St Mary’s round-up
St. Mary’s U13s were at
home on the 4G turf at
King James against a good
Richmond Town side in
their most recent fixture.
The Blues went 2 down
before a triple substitution
improved matters.
On
came
Cameron
Galloway, Matthew Stokoe
and debutant Zak Holywell
and within a minute
Galloway scored a cracker
for 2 – 1.
With ten minutes remaining, Matthew Stout scored
a penalty to make it 2 – 2.
In the last minute Zak
Holywell rounded his man
and slotted the ball into an
empty net for an excellent
3- 2 comeback.
The U15s had a great 8 – 1
win over Redcar Town with
four goals from Gareth
McMahon, three from Sam
Parnaby and a great goal
from Regan Blakey.
The U11s had an excellent 2
– 1 win away to Redcar with
goals from Oliver Johnson
and Jack Purdham.
St Mary’s have a Sports
Night coming up with Lou
