The old adage that one should
“only eat
oysters during months that
end in R” persists, but the seafood-sa
vvy on the Texas
coast know almost any time
is a good time
to slurp up some of these
succulent shellfish. Modern harvesting
techniques and the
warm waters of the Gulf
produce oysters
nearly all year long.
Early March is when Fulton
hosts its
annual salute to the these
ocean creatures,
drawing more than 30,000
attendees to
the city’s waterfront to enjoy
fireworks at
8:30 p.m. Thursday, contests
for raw oyster
eating and shucking, live
entertainment, a
parade, vendors and a carnival
with games
and rides. Proceeds benefit
the Fulton
Volunteer Fire Departme
nt.
The 36th-annual Fulton
Oysterfest is
March 5-8 in Fulton Harbor
