26 October 2014 - Our Holy Redeemer
26 October 2014
COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED
AT OUR HOLY REDEEMER
Pope Saint John Paul II may no longer be in need of our prayers, for he has arrived safely home to the Father’s House
(cf. Saint John XIV:2), but many souls of the faithful departed still need us to pray for them. Saint John Paul II himself
made that clear in the letter he wrote (2 June 1998) for the Celebration of the Millennium of the Commemoration of All
the Faithful Departed. In obedience to John Paul II’s inspired teaching, and in faithful accordance with Sacred Tradition,
a nine day All Souls Novena will be offered at the Altar of Our Holy Redeemer in Freeport beginning with the 7:00 A.M.
Mass on Sunday, 2 November 2014 and ending at the 8:00 A.M. Mass on Monday, 10 November 2014. In addition to
those being remembered in our Novena, the following family members will be remembered in a unique way at the
11:30 A.M. Mass on Sunday, 2 November. A temporary display featuring their names will be erected and remain by the
Baptismal Font throughout the year ahead.
Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them . . .

 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
26 OCTOBER 2014
BISHOP WALSH
(Our Lives are Needed to Tell the Story)
The Most Reverend Paul H. Walsh, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop – emeritus of the Diocese of Rockville Centre,
died peacefully in the presence of a priest, family, and friends on 18 October 2014, the Feast of Saint
Luke (Saint Paul the Apostle’s companion.)
Bishop Walsh: a curriculum vitae, our many memories, recorded videos, audio messages, thousands of
still photographs,
four pages of the
Our Holy Redeemer
Parish
Sunday
Bulletin, obituaries,
and so much
more can capture
moments of his
life but they do not
tell the whole
story.
Borrowing
the
inspired
words of Saint John
the Evangelist in
the fourth Gospel:
“I do not think the
whole world would
contain the books
that would be
written”
(Saint
John
IV:25)
to
capture who he
was, and the things
he did. Even the
words taken from
chapter twelve of
Saint Paul’s Letter
to the Romans
that Bishop Walsh
chose for his
Episcopal Motto, “Rejoice in Hope” do not tell the story. No, none of these things can tell the whole
story but we can.
Yes, we can tell the story with the lives we live! Lives committed (as was his Bishop Brennan reminded
us) to Christ Jesus in the Eucharist and to building friendships/ relationships centered around our Friend.
Lives committed (as was his Bishop Murphy reminded us) to giving everyone the care of “a Pastor after
the mind and heart of Jesus Christ.” Lives committed (as anyone who ever prayed with him could tell
you) to our “Loving Father” Who so loved us that He sent His only Son so that we might not perish, but
might have Eternal Life (cf. Saint John III:16). Yes, God so loved us that He sent us Bishop Walsh.
Therefore, please join me in praying for our friend and our Pastor:
“Loving Father,
Your beloved son +Paul
has handed over his spirit into Your hands.
May it please You
to allow that spirit of our friend, our Pastor, Your devoted son
to be handed over to all those whom he leaves behind
so that we may rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer
and tell the story of Your Life he lived.
Through Christ Our Lord.
Amen.”
 A LETTER FROM POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II 
LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS
POPE JOHN PAUL II
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE MILLENNIUM OF THE
Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
To The Most Reverend Raymond Séguy
Bishop of Autun, Châlon and Mâcon Abbot of Cluny
1. This year, when we are celebrating the millennium of the
Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, established by
St. Odilo, fifth Abbot of Cluny, the centenary of the foundation of
the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Cluny, committed to praying
for the souls in purgatory, and the 40th anniversary of the bulletin
Lumière et vie, which promotes prayer for the dead, I gladly join in
spirit all those who will take part this year in the celebrations
offered for those who have gone before us. Indeed, on the day
after the feast of All Saints, when the Church joyfully celebrates
the communion of Saints and human salvation, St. Odilo urged his
monks to say special prayers for all the dead, thus mysteriously
contributing to their entry into beatitude; the custom of solemnly
interceding for the dead in a celebration which St. Odilo called
All Souls Day gradually spread from the Abbey of Cluny and is now
the practice throughout the universal Church.
Feast of All Saints
2. In praying for the dead, the Church above all contemplates the mystery of the Resurrection of Christ, Who
obtains salvation and eternal life for us through His Cross. Thus with St. Odilo we can ceaselessly repeat:
“The Cross is my refuge, my way and my life. The Cross is my invincible weapon. The Cross repels all evil.
The Cross dispels the darkness.” The Lord’s Cross reminds us that all life is illumined by the Light of Easter
and that no situation is totally lost, for Christ conquered death and opened the way for us to true life.
Redemption “is brought about in the sacrifice of Christ, by which man redeems the debt of sin and is
reconciled to God” (Tertio millennio adveniente, n. 7).
3. Our hope is founded on Christ’s sacrifice. His Resurrection inaugurates the “end of the times” (1 Pt 1:20; cf.
Heb 1:2). The belief in eternal life which we profess in the Creed is an invitation to the joyful hope of seeing
God face to face. To believe in the resurrection of the flesh is to recognize that there is a final end, an
ultimate goal for all human life, “which so satisfies man’s appetite that nothing else is left for him to desire”
(Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, I-II, q. 1, a. 5; St. Paulinus of Nola, Letters, 1, 2). This same desire is
wonderfully expressed by St. Augustine: “You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests
in You” (Confessions, I, 1). Thus, we are all called to live with Christ, seated at the right hand of the Father, and
to contemplate the Holy Trinity, for “God is the principal object of Christian hope” (Alphonsus Liguori, Practice
of the Love of Jesus Christ, 16, 2); we can say with Job: “I know that my Redeemer lives, and at last He will stand
upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then from my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall
see on my side, and my eyes shall behold and not another” (Jb 19:25-27).
4. Let us also remember that the Mystical Body of Christ is waiting to be reunited at the end of history, when
all its members will be in perfect beatitude and God will be all in all (cf. Origen, Homilies on Leviticus, n. 7). In
fact, the Church hopes for the eternal salvation of all Her children and of all mankind. “We believe that the
Church is necessary to salvation, for Christ is the one mediator and way of salvation and He becomes present
to us in His Body which is the Church, but the divine design of salvation embraces all men. Those indeed who
are in ignorance of Christ’s Gospel and of His Church through no fault of their own, who search for God in
sincerity of heart, and who, acting according to conscience, strive under the influence of grace to fulfill His
will, belong to His people, even though in a way we cannot see, and can obtain eternal salvation. Their
number is known only to God” (Paul VI, Credo of the People of God, 30 June 1968).
5. Contemplation of the lives of those who have followed Christ encourages us to lead a good, upright
Christian life which makes us “worthy of the kingdom of God” (2 Thes 1:5). Thus we are called to “supernatural
vigilance”, in the words of Cardinal Perraud (Lettre à l’occasion du neuvième centenaire de la fête pour les morts),
so that we can prepare ourselves each day for eternal life. As Cardinal John Henry Newman emphasized: “We
are not simply to believe, but to watch; not simply to love, but to watch; not simply to obey, but to watch; ...
and thus it happens that watching is a suitable test of a Christian.” This is because to watch is “to be
detached from what is present, and to live in what is unseen; to live in the thought of Christ as He came once,
and as He will come again; to desire His second coming” (Parochial and Plain Sermons, IV, 22).
6. The prayers of intercession and petition which the Church never ceases to raise to God have great value.
They are “characteristic of a heart attuned to God’s Mercy” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2635). The Lord
always lets Himself be moved by His children’s supplications, for He is the God of the living. During the
Eucharist, through the general intercessions and the
Memento for the dead, the assembled community presents
to the Father of all mercies those who have died, so that
through the trial of purgatory they will be purified, if
necessary, and attain eternal joy. In entrusting them to the
Lord, we recognize our solidarity with them and share in
their salvation in this wondrous mystery of the communion
of Saints. The Church believes that the souls detained in
purgatory “are helped by the prayers of the faithful and most
of all by the acceptable sacrifice of the altar” (Council of Trent,
Decree on Purgatory), as well as by “alms and other works of
piety” (Eugene IV, Bull Laetantur coeli). “In fact, that same
holiness, which is derived simply from their participation in
the Church’s holiness, represents their first and fundamental
Feast of All Souls
contribution to the holiness of the Church Herself, which is
the ‘communion of Saints’” (Christifideles laici, n. 17).
7. I therefore encourage Catholics to pray fervently for the dead, for their family members and for all our
brothers and sisters who have died, that they may obtain the remission of the punishments due to their sins
and may hear the Lord’s call: “Come, O my dear soul, to eternal repose in the arms of My goodness, which
has prepared eternal delights for you” (Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life, 17, 4).
As I entrust the faithful who will pray for the dead to the intercession of Our Lady, of St. Odilo and of
St. Joseph, patron of a happy death, I cordially grant my Apostolic Blessing to them and to the members of
the diocesan community of Autun, to the members of the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Cluny and to the
readers of the bulletin Lumière et vie. I willingly extend it during the millennial year to all who pray for the
intention of the souls in purgatory, who take part in the Eucharist and who offer sacrifices for the dead.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your
mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love
your neighbor as yourself” (See Matthew 22:34-40). In today’s Gospel Jesus is telling us that
we are commanded to love and that we should always be willing to serve the Lord and our
neighbor in love with all that we have. Perhaps you wonder how you can put all of your
heart, soul and mind into something. The answer is that you cannot--at least not on your
own. But the good news is that you don’t have to do it on your own. We have divine help in
doing so. Our God is willing and able to give us the grace we need. He has given us the
Eucharist, the greatest miracle of love. He has also given us the help of the Church, and the
example and the intercession of the Holy Mother of God and of the saints. Don’t give up! We have help!
Please Pray for Our Priests
O God, Who made Your Only Begotten Son eternal High Priest, grant that those He has chosen
as ministers and stewards of Your mysteries may be found faithful in carrying out the ministry
they have received. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

More than likely, if you use Parish Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sunday-missed” envelopes in the

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
(ABOUT THE FAMILY)
APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION
FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO
OF POPE JOHN PAUL II
TO THE EPISCOPATE
TO THE CLERGY AND TO THE FAITHFUL
OF THE WHOLE CATHOLIC CHURCH
ON THE ROLE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY
IN THE MODERN WORLD
(22 November 1981)
PART ONE
BRIGHT SPOTS AND SHADOWS FOR THE FAMILY TODAY
Gradualness and Conversion
9. To the injustice originating from sin-which has profoundly penetrated the structures of today's world-and
often hindering the family's full realization of itself and of its fundamental rights, we must all set ourselves
in opposition through a conversion of mind and heart, following Christ Crucified by denying our own
selfishness: such a conversion cannot fail to have a beneficial and renewing influence even on the
structures of society.
What is needed is a continuous, permanent conversion which, while requiring an interior detachment from
every evil and an adherence to good in its fullness, is brought about concretely in steps which lead us ever
forward. Thus a dynamic process develops, one which advances gradually with the progressive integration
of the gifts of God and the demands of His definitive and absolute love in the entire personal and social life
of man. Therefore an educational growth process is necessary, in order that individual believers, families
and peoples, even civilization itself, by beginning from what they have already received of the mystery of
Christ, may patiently be led forward, arriving at a richer understanding and a fuller integration of this
mystery in their lives.
Inculturation
10. In conformity with her constant tradition, the Church receives from the various cultures everything that
is able to express better the unsearchable riches of Christ. Only with the help of all the cultures will it be
possible for these riches to be manifested ever more clearly, and for the Church to progress towards a daily
more complete and profound awareness of the truth, which has already been given to her in its entirety by
the Lord.
Holding fast to the two principles of the compatibility with the Gospel of the various cultures to be taken
up, and of communion with the universal Church, there must be further study, particularly by the Episcopal
Conferences and the appropriate departments of the Roman Curia, and greater pastoral diligence so that
this "inculturation" of the Christian faith may come about ever more extensively, in the context of marriage
and the family as well as in other fields.
It is by means of "inculturation" that one proceeds towards the full restoration of the covenant with the
Wisdom of God, which is Christ Himself. The whole Church will be enriched also by the cultures which,
though lacking technology, abound in human wisdom and are enlivened by profound moral values.
So that the goal of this journey might be clear and consequently the way plainly indicated, the Synod was
right to begin by considering in depth the original design of God for marriage and the family: it "went back
to the beginning," in deference to the teaching of Christ.
PART TWO
THE PLAN OF GOD FOR MARRIAGE AND THE FAMILY
Man, the Image of the God Who Is Love
11. God created man in His own image and likeness:
calling him to existence through love, He called him at
the same time for love.
God is love and in Himself He lives a mystery of
personal loving communion. Creating the human race
in His own image and continually keeping it in being,
God inscribed in the humanity of man and woman the
vocation, and thus the capacity and responsibility, of
love and communion. Love is therefore the
fundamental and innate vocation of every human
being.
As an incarnate spirit, that is a soul which expresses itself in a body and a body informed by an immortal
spirit, man is called to love in his unified totality. Love includes the human body, and the body is made a
sharer in spiritual love.
Christian revelation recognizes two specific ways of realizing the vocation of the human person in its
entirety, to love: marriage and virginity or celibacy. Either one is, in its own proper form, an actuation of
the most profound truth of man, of his being "created in the image of God."
Consequently, sexuality, by means of which man and woman give themselves to one another through the
acts which are proper and exclusive to spouses, is by no means something purely biological, but concerns
the innermost being of the human person as such. It is realized in a truly human way only if it is an integral
part of the love by which a man and a woman commit themselves totally to one another until death. The
total physical self-giving would be a lie if it were not the sign and fruit of a total personal self-giving, in
which the whole person, including the temporal dimension, is present: if the person were to withhold
something or reserve the possibility of deciding otherwise in the future, by this very fact he or she would
not be giving totally.
This totality which is required by conjugal love also corresponds to the demands of responsible fertility.
This fertility is directed to the generation of a human being, and so by its nature it surpasses the purely
biological order and involves a whole series of personal values. For the harmonious growth of these values
a persevering and unified contribution by both parents is necessary.
To be continued next week . . .)

FAITH AND EDUCATION
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you."
SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road)
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
The 15 members of our eighth grade class met 170 of our benefactors at the Garden City Country
Club this past Wednesday. All were there for our Seventh Annual Ladies’ Luncheon. The eighth
graders welcomed the guests to the country club and escorted them to their seats. Many of the
ladies commented on how much they enjoyed this touch of chivalry and were appreciative of the
way the De La Salle students conducted themselves like gentleman. The students, although
initially a bit nervous, found the experience to be a good one as well.
Author Naomi Schafer Riley addressed the adults referencing her book, Opportunity and Hope. The book describes the
significant impact attendance at schools like The De La Salle School has on young people who, without the help of
benefactors, have no options about where to go to school.
Later in the program the students took turns pulling the winning tickets for the day’s prizes and the young man who
selected the ticket delivered the item to the lucky winner. In the cash raffle first prize of $1,000 went to Dr. Gail Dougherty
of Brooklyn. Ms. Carole Hess of Garden City won the second prize of $500 and Mrs. Susan Cappiello of Bellerose received
the $250 third prize.
Special thanks to the parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer who purchased raffle tickets and/or attended the luncheon.
Investing in Catholic education makes a positive difference in a youngster’s life on earth and quite possibly in heaven too!

THE
GREATEST
COMMANDMENT
One of the Pharisees, a
scholar of the law, tested
Jesus by asking Him,
“Teacher, which commandment
in the law is the greatest?”
He said to him, “You shall
love the Lord, your God, with
all your heart, with all your
soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the
first commandment. The
second is like it: You shall
love your neighbour as
yourself. The whole law and
the prophets depend on these
two commandments.”
Saint Matthew XXII: 34-40
