When I hear those words I usually think of the changes that come with this time of the year:
The earth is renewing itself and so we too, start to think in terms of Spring cleaning and de-cluttering and simplifying our lives. Many times our clients call upon us to do a Spring 'spruce up'
for their homes. This season is about new beginnings and things that are fresh and pure and
less complicated.
I feel that this is an exciting season of change for our chapter as well. Our new ASID office,
located in Suite 285 at the Houston Design Center (formerly the Resource Center) should be
completed by the end of March. We plan to celebrate this new start with a fabulous Grand
Opening Party on April 8th at the new office. This event will be held in conjunction with the
Houston Design Center, The Contemporary Arts Museum and the 'Design Life Now': National
Design Triennial exhibit, as well as Paper City Magazine. This is our time to shine and to
celebrate our new home and the beginning of a new era for ASID-TGCC and the Houston
Design Center. We say a huge 'thank you' to our PR representative, Alton LaDay, for continually working on our behalf to bring these new and exciting events together for our chapter.
Kudos to award winning designers and fellow TGCC members
John T Robinson, FASID and Marlys Tokerud, ASID, for designing
the new office. The space is innovative and edgy and will be a
place that all members will enjoy and be proud of. We will now
have room to host our own CEU's and seminars. There will be
additional rooms for members to hold meetings or use for client
appointments. This new office is for the benefit of everyone and
is part of your membership privilege. Please see the insert in
this newsletter announcing our Non-Fund-Raiser Fund Raiser.
We are raising funds to purchase new furnishings and equipment as well as to help with the build-out costs. This is an easy
way that every designer and Industry Partner can contribute to
the new office without sacrificing time or energy.
On behalf of the entire chapter, I would like to thank the following
people and companies that have already contributed to our new
office in some way, with either product or services or both.
The list is growing, but thus far we send out a very appreciative
Thank You! to the following: Ralph Schiller of American Light,

really appreciate your generosity.

ASID Program Launch 2008
By Sandy Sawyer, ASID
The ASID Program Committee launched its new schedule for 2008 with “Technology Made Easy” at Tweeter Home Entertainment Group’s new
concept showroom, 5210 Kirby Drive on January 29th to a capacity crowd of designers and guests.
Tweeter generously hosted this event and provided complimentary valet parking
for all attendees. The program was designed to have experts demonstrate state of
the art technology and present current information in back to back seminars. All
were enthusiastically attended while attendees also had the opportunity to tour the
updated, high-tech space where Tweeter’s staff was continually demonstrating new
products. Designers were given resource notebooks for design libraries.
Kudo's to Tweeter's team: Texas Manager, Larry Treibel; Digital Design Consultant,
Joe Kaleza; Kim Shook and the entire staff. All did an outstanding job of orchestrating this event. Scrumptious food and drink was served while our Chapter members
and visitors mingled between seminars.
Syd Farber and Sandy Sawyer, ASID Program Chairs, coordinated this program.
A large thank you to Sandy Sawyer, whose vision to partner with Tweeter made this
event an overwhelming success.

Another new start is the introduction of 2nd Tuesday events at the Houston Design
Center and will be assisted by our ASID 2nd Tuesday representative, Catheryn Wilson,
ASID. Each month a different show room will host a special program and many of the
other show rooms will be participating by serving refreshments and promoting specials
on their products. I encourage you to attend and support this new program. The March
2nd Tuesday event will be hosted by Office Furniture Innovations, in Suite 264. And
then the April 2nd Tuesday will be hosted by Charlotte Nail Antiques in Suite 165.
We all look forward to these upcoming 2nd Tuesday events!
Among other new and innovative activities going on; I would be remiss in failing to
mention the tremendous February ASID program held at Tweeter's Home Entertainment
on Kirby Drive. We had one of our largest number in attendance that evening and the
program was amazing. Tweeter's had representatives from all of their various
product lines educate us on everything from Audio/Visual to the latest technology in
HD and plasma television as well as home security and beyond. We all learned a great
deal that night while also being treated to delicious food & drink. Thank you Sandy
Sawyer and Syd Farber & committee for a wonderful job.
We had the privilege of participating in the HADA Antiques Show last month by way
of a special ASID Booth. We enjoyed meeting the public and talking with them about
who we are and what we do and the benefits of hiring an ASID Designer. The HADA
Show is amazing and we enjoyed this new collaboration of our two organizations. I
think it is a positive partnership for all. Thank you to: Pam Hoffer & Jay Crowe for
designing and setting up our booth and to Charlotte Nail Antiques for the beautiful
furnishings and to Ashley Antique Rugs for the fabulous rugs that were loaned to us
for the show.
One more exciting bit of news. The Houston Chronicle and the ASID Awards have
come full circle and have once more partnered for the annual design competition.
The Houston Chronicle was the original sponsor for the ASID Awards competition several
years ago and while they are happy to be back on board; we are thrilled to have them!
The winners will be show cased in Gloss Magazine in September. The huge circulation of the Houston Chronicle will be a powerful way to promote our ASID Awards
winners as well as our chapter. I encourage every designer to enter this year, as we are
introducing several new categories and opportunities to shine. More details to
follow!
Let me wrap this up by saying how honored I feel to be president of one of the best
ASID chapters in the entire country. I will be reporting back to you from my time at
Interiors 08' in New Orleans where I will be sharing all of our exciting TGCC news
with other chapter presidents. It is always a great feeling to hear how well respected
our chapter is within the ASID community at large. Thanks to you, our members, for
your continued support of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter and for making this a great
organization.
My Best,
Lynne T Jones, ASID

Spring Community Service Project
Benefiting the Galveston Historic Foundation the 1838 Samuel May Williams
Showhouse opening May 2nd and remaining open throughout each weekend in May
By Sylvia Fulleterton, Allied Member ASID and Tom Schwenk
The modern day Galveston Historical Foundation was founded in 1954 specifically to save a historic building, the 1839
Samuel May Williams’s house, from demolition. This house has been selected by ASID for their community service project
by presenting it as Designer Showhouse. There are 11 ASID Design teams and two student groups, The Art
Institute and San Jacinto are involved. The chairmen for the event are Hallie Radcliffe-Canalli, ASID,
Sylvia Fullerton, Allied Member ASID and Tom Schwenk. Dennis Miller, ASID (retired) and Betty
Prough, ASID are also members of the committee. GHF has also graciously agreed to supply docents
for the home for its duration.
The opening of the Showhouse is to coincide with the 34th Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour,
one of the largest tours of its kind in the United States. This rare combination of Creole-plantation and
New England architectural styles was built in 1839 for Samuel May Williams.. It is important because of
its age, but more so because of its owner, Samuel May Williams. He was an important figure in the colonial period of Texas, serving as Stephen F. Austin's secretary in colonial affairs. Most important,
however, Williams and his partner, Thomas F. McKinney, with great personal sacrifice, secured money of
their personal loan for the government of the Republic of Texas and thereby insured the success of that
government.

Peer Tables
By Cheryl Donaho, FASID
Our chapter had a tremendous turn out on January 30th for the first peer
table formation meeting of this year. A new peer table group was formed and
several other industry partners were placed in an existing peer table. We
have many more industry partners on the waiting list and we need designers
to come on board! Peer table memberships are comprised of both designers
and industry partners. The meeting place and time (one meeting per month)
are set by each group according to their needs.
Why should you join a peer table group?
• Enhance the professionalism and knowledge of our members, by improving
business expertise
• Strengthen the quality and efficiency of interior design services
• Create bonding in our membership and develop new friendships and relationships
• Give designers and IP members another member benefit of being part of
ASID
• Provide another means of communicating information about ASID events
• Tap into new resources
If you are interested in joining a peer group or want more information
contact one of the chairpersons at the following email addresses. If you are
currently a peer table leader and would like to add new members to your
existing peer group, then contact us as well.

ASID Foundation News
By Barbara Schlattman, FAISD
Your ASID Foundation is entering its fourth year and for a new
foundation, we have much to be proud of. The ASID Foundation is funding
several projects and initiatives for next year and beyond.
Partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council, the foundation is
working on a collaborative project called REGREEN to develop sustainable practice guidelines and educational resources for homeowners, residential interior design professionals, suppliers and contractors. REGREEN
will raise awareness and accelerate adoption of home renovation and
remodeling practices that minimize impact on the environment and human
health. A draft of the guidelines was released at GreenBuild earlier this
year and the final guidelines will be unveiled at ASID’s annual conference
INTERIORS 08: The ASID Conference on Design, in March in New Orleans.
The ASID Foundation was a sponsor for The Green House, New Directions
in Sustainable Architecture & Design exhibition displayed at the National
Building Museum in Washington, D. C.,
The Foundation is helping to support a revision of the evaluation standards for academic interior design programs to be implemented by CIDA
(formerly FIDER) in 2009.
Plus, the Foundation awards scholarships and grants.
Jubilation’08, the Foundation’s major fundraiser will be held on Friday,
March 14 in New Orleans. It will be a Mardi Gras atmosphere with a
celebrity auctioneer, Bryan Batt. Our chapter is fortunate to have so many
of individuals make significant donations to the auction. The ASID
Foundation would like to thank those special contributors for their
generosity: M & M Carpet, Ferguson Enterprises, Baccarat, John
Todd Partridge, Ladco Washington Park Design Center, Iron Accents
and Design House (partial listing at this time of printing).
The ASID Foundation would also like to thank the ASID Foundation
Chapter Liaison -Donna Jarnigan, ASID, TGCC President Lynne Jones,
ASID, and Sylvia Fullerton, Allied Member ASID for their enthusiasm
in acquiring such incredible items for this very worthwhile cause.
Thank you,
Barbara Schlattman, FASID

ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Paris, France Tour
As announced in the last newsletter,
The TGCC is planning its first group trip
to Paris, France. Please note the dates
have been changed to accommodate a
reduced hotel rate and the dates will not
be conflicting with the Paris Couture
Shows. Yes, it would be nice, but!
Dennis McNabb will be our host along
with his wonderful French tour guide,
Christine. They have been working together
planning these tours for the past 18 years.
The itinerary is packed; with the only
complaint ever given
– “not enough time
for shopping”.
The revised dates: Leaving Houston the evening
of Friday, October 24 and returning to Houston Sunday,
November 02 in the afternoon. The weather at this
time of year in Paris should be brisk but beautiful.

Dennis took a group of HCC students to
Paris at this time last year and the weather
was perfect.
The estimated cost including round
trip coach air fare, double occupancy
hotel accommodations and the tour
package is estimated to be $3,200.00
per person. Departure taxes and tips are
additional. This fee is based upon 20
participants. Airline and hotel updates
will be quoted on an individual basis.
A deposit of $750.00 will secure your
place for this great educational
tour.
For further information, questions, or to book your tour contact

You won’t be disappointed.

Participate in
RealWorld DesignWeek!
RealWorld DesignWeek is the Society’s first cohesive, national program
to educate future interior designers. Debuting in 2008, this program focuses
on career development, and offers both classroom and hands-on learning
experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior design.
During RealWorld DesignWeek, October 19 – 25, 2008, ASID student
members will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID professional and allied members, as well as Industry Partner representatives onsite at work locations. In addition, the week will be book-ended by a
pair of online instructional seminars —Prepare and Position—hosted by
prominent guest speakers.
This innovative program exists exclusively for ASID members—students
and practitioners (allied, professional and Industry Partner representatives)—and has the potential to touch thousands of members at once
provided ASID members are committed to the cause of design education
and sign up to participate.
The benefits are numerous. RealWorld DesignWeek will empower students
to succeed in the industry, build relationships with the design community
and provide them with the tools to jumpstart their careers. Design practitioners will have confidence that the future leaders of interior design are
primed to act responsibly and carry the industry to a higher level and the
program also offers a unique mechanism for filling an internship or entrylevel job opening. Moreover, professional chapters will experience increased
membership and improved relations between professionals and students.

To facilitate the organization of the shadow experiences that will take
place during RealWorld DesignWeek, practitioners and students will be
paired online in a self-service fashion on a secure Web site in April or May
2008. Practitioners will be given an initial window of time to post their
profiles and availability on the site. Once this window is closed, students
will then be able to log on, view the profiles and self-select which practitioner they would most like to shadow. Pairings will be first come, first
served, so students should sign up early!
Practitioners currently have the option of completing a Practitioner
Agreement Form and submitting it to ASID via mail or fax by April 4, 2008.
By submitting this form, the practitioner makes a prior commitment to
participating in RealWorld DesignWeek. ASID staff will post their profile
online in April 2008.
Additional information on RealWorld DesignWeek and a copy of the
Practioner Agreement form are available on www.asid.org/rwdw. Participate
in RealWorld DesignWeek and make a difference in your life as an interior
designer and ASID member. Be a part. It’s your profession.

The Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design
presents Houston Habitat for Humanity a BIG Check!
By Thomsaine Johnson
ASID Community Involvement Chair
On Saturday, January 26, 2008, The Texas Gulf Coast
Chapter of The American Society of Interior Designers
was honored to be part of the Houston Habitat for
Humanity’s Umland Family Park Home Dedication
Services. Lynne T. Jones, ASID, President of Texas
Gulf Coast Chapter, Pam Hoffer, ASID Director of
Professional Development, Thomasine Johnson, ASID
Community Involvement Chair and Jeremy Wells of
Imago Dei, ASID 2007 Golf Tournament Chair presented
a check to Houston Habitat for Humanity in the amount
of $1,500.00. The funds were part of the proceeds
raised from the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter’s 1st Annual
Golf Tournament that was held November 5, 2007.
Thanks to all of YOU, who help make this possible with
your donations and dedication.
Although it was cold and cloudy outside on the morning of the dedication services, we all felt warm and sunny within our souls as we had
the opportunity to meet the 16 individual families whose homes were
being dedicated in this phase of the Habitat Umland Project. Just to listen
to their amazing story was an extraordinary experience.
The Umland Family Park Subdivision was named after the founder of
Houston Habitat for Humanity Carl Umland and is one of the largest singlefamily affordable home developments of its kind in the world. When it
is complete there will be a total of 125 homes. “One of the pillars of the
Habitat model is that the homebuyer families partner with volunteers and
the organization to help build their own homes and the homes of other
families in the program,” said Houston Habitat Executive Director Algenita
Davis. “In doing so, there is a vested interest created in the home and a
strong sense of community begins to develop among our families. Building

in neighborhoods like

only enhances
that spirit of
community, as
the homebuyers
are truly neighbors.”
With that
said, the Texas
Gulf Coast
Chapter of ASID,
Community
Involvement
taskforce will to
continue to help
with this project
and others of its
kind because it
is one of our
goals to enhance
the spirit of community through design. After all, the spirit of design
engages people and people engage the community. You may ask, “How
can I help?” Well, the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of ASID has developed a
special partnership with the individual Habitat for Humanity Homeowners
and Our Designers to help with the process of “making the house, their
home”. If you would like to donate a complementary design consultation,
participate in a design workshop or contribute in any other design service,
please send your contact information to Thomasine Johnson at
[email protected] the Community Involvement Chair. We
thank you in advance for being involved in the design of a community.

Emerging Designers to be Featured at the
Student Career Day Portfolio Show
Friday, April 18, 2008, Houston Design Center
By Dan Hawkins, Student Member ASID
So, how long have you been a designer?? Missed your chance to test
your skills on the NCIDQ? ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Student Career
Day will be a great opportunity to see what is new in the world of interior design. Not new products or new services, but new designers. Emerging
professionals, finishing their design education, will be seeking their niche
in one of the many facets of the interior design profession. You are cordially
invited on April 18, to come see what these soon-to-be professionals have
to offer.
A full day of activities is planned for the students at Houston Design
Center, 7026 Old Katy Road. The morning begins with a speaker series.
Designers and Industry Partners will present topics relevant to embarking
on a new career in interior design. Following lunch, from 2:00 to 4:00,
graduating students from Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Schools will be displaying
portfolios and providing resumes for potential employers. Guided tours
of showrooms in the Houston Design Center will also be provided for
undergraduates during the afternoon session.
Professionals are encouraged to attend, as ASID-TGCC will be hosting
a CEU. “How to Specify Decorative and Architectural Hardware” will be
presented during the lunch hour, from 1:00pm on April 18, at a
Houston Design Center Showroom (TBA). Following the program, residential designers, commercial and hospitality designers, and industry
partners are invited to meet and greet the students during the Portfolio
Presentation. It is a great opportunity to see what one may expect
from a potential employee who has recently graduated from a local
interior design program.
ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter congratulates all of this year’s graduates. We hope that all of you stay involved in ASID by becoming an Allied
member and ultimately an ASID Professional. Our future is in your hands.
It’s time to go to work!

Students Participate in RealWorld DesignWeek!
ASID RealWorld DesignWeek is the Society’s first cohesive, national
program to educate future interior designers. Debuting in 2008, this
program focuses on career development, and offers both classroom and
hands-on learning experiences to introduce students to the real world of
interior design.
During RealWorld DesignWeek, October 19 – 25, 2008, ASID student
members will participate in one-day shadow experiences with ASID professional and allied members, as well as Industry Partner representatives
on-site at work locations. In addition, the week will be book-ended by a
pair of online instructional seminars—Prepare and Position—hosted by
prominent guest speakers. Prepare will teach students specific professional practices, such as business etiquette and interviewing techniques,
to prime them for job shadowing experiences. Position will demonstrate
how to put those learned professional practices, ethics and skill sets into
action and leverage participation in RealWorld DesignWeek to reach a
desired career.
This innovative program exists
exclusively for ASID members—students
and practitioners (allied, professional
and Industry Partner representatives)—and has the potential to touch
thousands of members at once. The
benefits to student participants are
numerous as RealWorld DesignWeek
will empower ASID student members
to succeed in the industry, build relationships with the design community,
as well as provide them with the tools
to jump-start their careers. The hope
is that the program will act as a catalyst for developing long-term mentoring
relationships and filling internship
or entry level job openings. Moreover,
ASID chapters will experience overall
improved relations between professionals and students.
“I only wish something like this
had been around when I was
starting out as a designer.”

“Top Design”
To facilitate the coordination of
the shadow experiences that will take
place during RealWorld DesignWeek,
practitioners and students will be
paired online in a self-service fashion
on a secure Web site in April or May
2008. Practitioners will be given an
initial window of time to post their
profiles and availability on the site.
Once this window is closed, students
will then be able to log on, view profiles
and self-select which practitioner they
would most like to shadow. Pairings
will be first come, first served, so
students should sign up early!
Participant instructions and additional information on RealWorld
DesignWeek is available on
www.asid.org/rwdw. Get involved
with this program and make a difference in your life as a future interior
designer. Be a part. It’s your profession.

Industry Partner Rep to the Board Co-Chair
The IP Strategic Planning is working hard for
you guys. Thanks to committee members Burt
Bricker, Unique Carpets, Laura Flora, Dal-tile
Slabs, Kimberly Vincent, Venetian Blinds and
Floorcoverings, Alison Dominquez, Dal-tile, and
myself. We met and put together the first round of ‘Welcome Designer
Gift Bags’ and mailed out letters letting the new members know they
would be available at the January program at Tweeter. We also informed
them if they were unable to attend the program that they would be at the
ASID office. They were handed out at the program and they loved
them!
Our next assembly meeting will be in 6 months and the date will be
announced.
The next project this committee will be working on is the June ASID
program. Sandy Sawyer and Syd Farber’s committee has been kind
enough to designate the June program to a purely social summer ‘Fun’
mixer. We thank them and are excited about the direction of our chapter
to promote social interaction amongst the Designer and the Industry
Partner. The hope is to build stronger working relationships amongst us.
Our current president, Lynne T. Jones, has already been so supportive of
IP and I am truly appreciative of her efforts.

We’re Gonna’ Shake it up in 2008

Industry Partner Co-Chair
Industry Partners have always been active
promoting our products and services to the ASID
Interior Designer. The format used in the past has
varied greatly with unpredictable degrees of success:
from Showroom Luncheons to the Event at the
Ballpark, ASID bazaar to the recent Golf Tournament. This year we’re
doing things a little different.
We have so many thoughts on this subject and already on our way to
market Industry Partners to the design community in a wide array of
diverse techniques. Our intention is to have a constant reminder of who
we are and what we do to benefit the design professional.

As you can see we have been busy. A handful of, creative thinking “out
of the box” Industry Partners put this all together. Unfortunately, I could
not have listed all those who gave their time and effort. We have all taken
time away from our busy schedules to work towards this common goal.
Which is, update the Interior Designer on our products and services as
often as possible while working within our time and budget restraints.
Give us a call; let us know when you’re available. We need you to participate and welcome your input.

DCH Spring Market
Tuesday, May 6
We are very excited to announce an exclusive partnership
between Architectural Digest and Decorative Center Houston
at the annual Spring Market taking place on May 6, 2008.
Paige Rense, Editor in Chief AD and Charles S. Cohen,
President/Owner of DCH are dedicated to producing the most
innovative and informative events that are sure to set a precedent in the design community.
Third Thursday
DCH is pleased to announce LUXE magazine as the local media sponsor
for our Third Thursday events.
Mark your calendars for the Third Thursday of each month (excluding
May & December), for an exciting presentation from DCH lecture series.
These Third Thursday presentations will include guest speakers on the
latest in interior design, product presentations, and luncheons.
This is a great opportunity to stay on top of design trends and be
educated on the latest products and lines our showrooms have to offer.
AD is the world’s definitive design magazine reaching an
audience of 5 million readers each month. As sole publishing
industry sponsor for this major to-the-trade market, AD Editor
in Chief Paige Rense will moderate the opening keynote panel
discussion. Members of the AD 100, a selection of their top
designers and architects, will participate in panel discussions, showroom programs and presentations.
April 17
11:00 AM
Kravet Fabrics/Furniture, Suite 155
During this event, AD will hold “open auditions” for residential interior designers. A panel of AD editors will meet with candidates and evaluate their work. Winning submissions will appear
both in future editions of AD and on the magazine’s website:
www.architecturaldigest.com
Welcome to the world of KravetCarpet, Kravet's newest home
furnishings introduction. Nick Lomangino, Vice President of
Floorcoverings , will present Kravet's custom capabilities
using fabric designs and colors and discuss the diversity of the
carpet line. Exciting presentation, with lunch to follow!
