Weekly Mass Schedule
Unless otherwise noted, all weekday Masses
will be held in the Parish Center Chapel
Greetings from the Vatican,
The last few weeks have been exciting, busy and emotional in
many ways. Not only have our classes here at the Institute
continued but we have had conversations with cardinals,
bishops and the press staying here at the NAC. We have had
the opportunity to talk and pray with many of the American
Cardinals. One of the Lenten practices here at the NAC is
Mass every morning at a station church (churches that were
stops for pilgrims coming to Rome for Lent), many of which
date from the 2nd through the 4th Century and many of which
the saints themselves attended or said Mass at. You really
can’t enter a church in Rome without finding a body or major
relic of a saint or Pope. It has been a great blessing. We have
studied art, architecture and Church governance as just a few
of the topics; from Popes to Caravaggio, Michelangelo,
Bernini, etc.

In addition to all this, we have had the opportunity to pray
and offer Mass. I have felt blessed to offer Mass and pray for
those who have asked, especially in places normally not
available to priests. I was edified the other day to stand at St.
Peter’s grave, with his bones present and visible, and to pray
for all of you. As I write this, the conclave has begun and we
suspect will last to the end of the week. We pray that by then
we will have a new Pope. This morning at 7:30, the cardinals
left the NAC, and as is the tradition we lined the Via Pinna
(the pine road, because it is lined with the tallest pine trees) to
clap off the cardinals as they left for the Conclave. It was a
very inspiring and emotional moment. The old saying is that
those who go in a Pope come out a Cardinal. So that being
said, many have questioned who are the top choices. No one
can say for sure because once that door closes all things
change. My guess is as good as yours. We all will learn when
we see the white smoke. Tonight the smoke was black as
expected. Tomorrow brings another day. We are just as
anxious as you. With all the news media now in Rome, the
candidates change daily, and each day someone different
emerges as a papabili. But that is over; now the true work
begins for the cardinals. Let’s pray that the Holy Spirit
inspires the cardinals to elect the right man to lead the Church
forward in these difficult times. Know that I continue to pray
for all of you and your intentions. I end with the hymn and
prayer that the cardinals and the Sistine choir sang before the
actual conclave began.
Veni, creator Spiritus mentes tuorom visita,
imple superna gratia, quae tu creasti pectora.

to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

Operation Rice Bowl
Putting Your Sacrifice to Work for Others
We invite our parish community to join in this Lenten
program of giving. Operation Rice Bowl materials are
available at the entrances of the Church and in the Parish
Office. One simple way to participate is to put the money
that you would have used to purchase your Lenten
sacrifice (candy, junk food, soda) into the Operation Rice
Bowl. Your Lenten sacrifice will become not just
something that helps you, but also helps those in need.
Archbishop’s Annual Appeal
The Archdiocese of Newark’s Office of Human
Concerns works to spread the Gospel’s
challenge of our need to care for the poor and the
marginalized within our society. It does this by making
presentations in parishes, schools and religious education
programs about the importance of Catholic Social
Teaching, specific social issues and the importance of
service in the life of the Church.
The Office of Human Concerns also works with youth
groups from both the Archdiocese of Newark and
nationally who are looking for service projects and an
opportunity to reflect on their experiences. During the last
two summers, over 80 young people from around the
country will come to the Archdiocese to serve the poor
with service projects in our shelters, parishes and soup
kitchens.
This Office creates a greater awareness of the important
social issues of the day such as poverty, climate change
and fair housing by providing information to parishes and
practical ways to be involved in making positive changes
to the world.
Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual
Appeal, which makes the Office of Human Concerns a
reality!
Donations are due by Wed., April 10, 2013. Please make
all donations in the form of a check. Do not return the
actual Rice Bowl or coins. Make checks payable to:
St. Mary’s Church and mark Operation Rice Bowl on the
check and envelope.

Physician Assisted Suicide – What is at Stake?
Did you know? New Jersey is poised to become the fourth
state with legalized physician-assisted suicide. Most states
(and most countries) believe that legalizing physicianassisted suicide would place in great jeopardy those who
are suffering and vulnerable. Oppose the NJ Death with
Dignity Act (A3328/S2259).
