April is Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Facts about Rape and Sexual Assault
11 facts about Child Abuse & Neglect

Approximately 5 children die every day because of
child abuse.

1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys will be sexually
abused before they reach age 18.

90 percent of child sexual abuse victims know the
perpetrator in some way. 68 percent are abused by
a family member.

Most children become victims of abuse and neglect at
18 months or younger.

In 2010, 1,537 children died of abuse or neglect.
(79.4 %were under the age of 4 and 47.7 % were under the age of 1)
Sexual assault is a general term that includes any forced or
unwanted sexual activity, including rape, incest, sexual
abuse, and molestation. Sexual assault includes any forced or
unwanted touching of an intimate part of the body, such as
breasts, buttocks, or genitals.
Rape, a specific type of sexual assault, involves any forced,
manipulated, or coerced penetration of the vagina, anus, or
mouth, by a penis or other object. Sexual assault/rape is not a
crime of passion but a crime of violence, using sex as a
weapon to overpower and to degrade the victim. A rapist can
be a stranger or someone the victim knows including a
spouse, date, or family member.

In 2010 there were 188,380 reports of rape and/or
sexual assault in the United States.

Boys (48.5 percent) and girls (51.2 percent) become
victims at nearly the same rate.

More than half of rape and sexual assault crimes take
place between 6pm and 6am.

3.6 million cases of child abuse are reported every
year in the U.S. And the number of children involved
in these reports is 6 million.

Females are more likely to be victims of rape or sexual
assault (182,000) than males (40,000).

Abused and neglected children are 11 times more likely to engage in criminal behavior as an adult.

Most victims of rape or sexual assault are females
younger than 24 years of age.

About 80 percent of 21-year-olds who were abused as
children met criteria for at least one psychological
disorder.

Most rapes committed against women are committed by
an intimate partner (spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend) or
someone else they know (friend, family member,
acquaintance).

14 percent of all men and 36 percent of all women in
prison were abused as children.

Abused children are less likely to practice safe sex,
putting them at greater risk for STDs. They’re also 25
percent more likely to experience teen pregnancy.
Sexual Assault Stats for South Dakota

Over 6,700 women in South Dakota reported being
victims of domestic violence in 2004.

There were 2,102 domestic assault arrests in South
Dakota in 2004.10

362 forcible rapes were reported in South
Dakota in 2005.

As of July 1, 2005, 15% of all inmates in South Dakota
state prisons were serving time for sex offenses.

9 homicides occurred as a result of domestic violence in
2006.

If you are wondering how you can help MSDVC “House of Hope”, we have some ideas for you.
MSDVC provides all the food for our clients during their stay, hygiene products, diapers, wipes, laundry
soap and softener, bedding, pillows, transportation via our van or River City Transit, a donation room of
household items and clothing. MSDVC provides new undergarments and pajamas as many come with
nothing. We also help our clients with furniture and small kitchen appliances when they move into their
own house. Those items underlined are always needed but we rely on donations for them. If you are
