Dear Fairwood Families:
Measurement of Student Progress (MSP): Our students are working very hard and
staying persistent on their MSP testing this month. Since we are doing more online testing this year in both science and math, each class has its own day in the lab for testing so
MSP will continue through the end of the month. We will receive the results in August
and will be able to report our state/federal Adequate Yearly Progress status to our community in September. Thank you parents for supporting your children during the testing!
Student Placement for 12-13; Teachers are beginning preliminary work on establishing
class placements for next year. Please be sure you have turned in your intent to return
form and your parent input form. Enrollment can change a lot over the summer so we
will post K-6 class placements in August at our welcome back Meet and Greet. We will
announce the date and time as soon as we can. Please remember that changes can happen
after the first day of school depending on changes in enrollment.
Summer Program for Entering Kindergarten Students: Our YMCA daycare partner
will be offering summer day camp program and a program for students entering Kindergarten in the fall. “Kids on Their Way” is a 10 week pre-kindergarten readiness program
that focuses on having a fun summer experience as well as getting ready for kindergarten.
This program qualifies as a DSHS childcare program. Please contact the YMCA program
at (253) 569-5940 to enroll in this great program.
Volunteers Make All The Difference! Fairwood’s annual celebration of our
parent/community volunteers is Tuesday May 21st 3:30-4:30 in our gym. We are planning another fun celebration this year and hope that our volunteers will attend. I would
like to recognize and thank all of the wonderful volunteers we have here at Fairwood and
your ongoing commitment to our students. You all give so much of your time and energy
to help us out here at school and your involvement makes a huge difference for ALL students. It is deeply touching to be part of such a giving community.

Lost & Found
Our lost and found is overflowing. Now that nice weather has arrived, we have an enormous amount of
coats, shirts, hats and other accessories in our lost and found bin. Please make a special trip inside the
school to check if your child has left anything. All items left at the end of the school year will be donated to the Kent Clothing Bank.

Fifth Grade Immunization Information
Thanks to all those parents who took your fifth grader for
the Tdap shot and returned the form with date and signature. It is so helpful to get that taken care of now rather
than during the busy time during August right before sixth
grade starts.
For the rest, remember that your fifth grader must get the Tdap shot after
they turn eleven. The form must be returned to school before starting sixth
grade. Thanks for your prompt attention for this important vaccination
which prevents tetanus and whooping cough.

2013-2014 Sports Physical Examination Policies
Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) requires that:
Prior to the first participation in interscholastic athletics, a student shall undergo a thorough
medical examination and be approved for interscholastic athletic competition by a medical authority licensed to perform a physical examination. WIAA regulations state that
those licensed to perform physical examinations include MD, Doctor of Osteopathy DO,
Certified Registered Nurse (ARNP), Physician’s Assistant (PR), and Naturopathic Physicians.
Kent School District requires that:
A current physical examination is completed prior to participation at the middle school level (grades 7-8) and
must be dated AFTER JUNE 1ST OF THE 6TH GRADE YEAR. No exceptions!
A current physical examination is completed prior to participation at the senior high level (grades 9-12) and
must be dated AFTER JUNE 1ST OF THE 8TH GRADE YEAR. No exceptions!
Physicals may be valid for 24 months from the date of the examination if all guidelines are met.
Physical expiration dates must extend beyond the respective WIAA season ending date.
Expiration dates occurring within a sport season shall require a new examination prior to that season.
2013-2014 Registration/Physical forms will be available at the Elementary, Middle School, High School and District
Athletic Department main offices on or after June 1, 2013.

Safety Patrol Picnic & Celebration!!

Wednesday June 14th.

We will be looking for new students to join safety patrol in the fall. All 5th
and 6th graders are eligible to apply.
The South King County Mobile Medical and Dental Unit will be in the area during
the month of April. This program provides no cost walk-in care for people who are
living homeless or were recently homeless, only. This service provides:

Walk-in care for most medical problems

Screening for diabetes and high blood pressure

Help with DSHS and other benefits applications

Mental Health Care

Connecting to other services such as
Dental Care, Shelter-Housing, Food, Domestic Violence, and establishing a regular

Warmer Weather Dress Code
The weather is finally getting warmer outside so this is just a reminder of Fairwood’s Dress
Code. Children should not wear spaghetti straps, excessively baggy pants and over-sized
clothes, halter tops, short shorts (appropriate length should be no shorter than 5 inches above
the knee or must touch the child’s longest finger when standing), spaghetti-strap tops, seethrough or midriff tops, belly shirts, jeans/pants hanging down so underwear shows, and clothing with inappropriate messages. Children are also to wear appropriate foot wear to recess and
PE (flip-flops and platform shoes are not allowed in PE). Students not following our dress code
will be asked to put on appropriate attire from the health room or parents will be asked to bring
in suitable clothing.

Building Character: Banish bullying by teaching your child to respect others
Bullying is a serious problem that deserves your attention, even if your child is not bullied or a bully. Research shows up to 30% of kids are bullied repeatedly, which means plenty of kids are at least observing
bullying. Encourage your child to:

Respect others. Teach respect through words and actions. Provide a warm home environment with good
role models and effective discipline (not too strict or too lenient). Remember the importance of supervision,
since bullying often occurs when adults aren't around.

Recognize bullying. Bullying comes in many forms. It can be physical, verbal or written, such as in
emails or text messages. It can also be silent, when a child is left out on purpose.
React to bullying. If your child knows someone who is being bullied, he should inform you or a teacher
about the situation.

“Summer Fitness Fun” Renton
Parks Track and Field Team - May 21-July 11
This program is about fun, participation, skill development and competing with friends. Events include sprints, relays,
softball throw and long jump. Practices will be held at Renton Memorial Stadium. The program runs on Tuesdays and
Thursdays beginning May 21 and running through July 11. Track meets will begin the middle of June. A mandatory
parent/participant meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. to kick off the season.

Bicycle Reminders
We have several students riding their bicycles or scooters to school. Please
remind your student that they are required to wear a helmet and have a
lock. We have noticed several bicycles not locked up at the bike rack. We
are not responsible for lost bikes or scooters. Also, please remind your
child that they are to walk their bicycles and scooters once they reach the
school grounds.
