of December.
He is currently a project manager
at Monsanto in the engineering
department, part-time professor
at Muscatine Community College and founder of the Muscatine
Boxing Club. He said his current
passions include the planned city
improvements to the riverfront/
downtown area and mentoring
area youth.
Saucedo said he is looking forward to bringing his experience
with large projects at Monsanto
to the council and to city projects.
Saucedo’s experience with budgeting, deadlines, cost-saving methods and his experience with contractors throughout the Mid-West
and North America has prepared
him for this role. He said “that al-
lows me to really understand what
a project costs.” He also said that
he would like to see our downtown thrive again and will look for
growth opportunities that encourage people to shop and dine locally. “I think that is a huge initiative
that I’m going to try to continue to
move forward.”
He also spoke about wanting to
continue with his desire to help
area youth, adding that one of his
personal long term goals is to build
a community center for youth
that includes sporting events, after
school activities and homework
help along with combining some
of the groups already available to
youth in the city. Saucedo said he
would like to see more opportunities created “that allow them to
grow and see the rewards of the
work they do.”
Saucedo said he is excited to be
moving into the city council membership and is looking forward to
being a good representative of this
city. “That’s a big passion for me.
My hopes are that I can strengthen
our team.”

Muscatine’s TanTara Transportation Corp. has been the official hauler of the Iowa Hawkeyes
football team since the late 1980’s.
The company maintains a specific
semi-truck trailer to accommodate
the team. According to TanTara
General Manager Randy Van Zee,
“Wherever the team goes, we go.
Regular season games, bowl games,
Big 10 Championship games, we
go.”
Hauling for the Hawkeyes is not
the only job of the Hawkeye Hauler. For two weeks every year, a very
different kind of cargo is loaded
into the 48’ trailer. Gone are the
pads, helmets, and uniforms. In
their place are cans, boxes, and
bags of food and toys.
The Hawkeye Hauler is also
the official truck of Two Weeks of
Love.
From November 30 to December 4, the truck will be located in
the parking lot of HyVee in Muscatine, at 2400 Second Ave. During
that week, the truck is used to collect food that will be donated to

Residents can purchase a bicycle

The following week, December 7 through December 11, the
truck will be parked at Krieger
Motor Company in Muscatine at
501 West Highway 61. While at
Kriegers, the truck will be collecting toys to donate to the Salvation
Army for their Christmas toy drive.
These toys will be provided to children in families who have applied
for assistance to help get through
the holiday season.
This year, there is a bit of a

that the Iowa Hawkeyes are experiencing, the official Hawkeye will
be en route to the Big 10 Championship game in Indianapolis,
Indiana. The truck that will be

community this year will in fact be

The trailer is 48’ long, 10’ tall

Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit announces
Lupe and Ramiro Vazquez winners of
Outstanding Immigrant Business Award
Ankeny,
Iowa.
November
21, 2015 — Lupe and Ramiro
Vazquez, co-owners of North
Construction and Guadalajara
Restaurant, were announced as the
winners of the Outstanding Immigrant Business Award at the eighth
Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit. First generation immigrants
from Mexico, Lupe and Ramiro
are hard workers dedicated to the
pursuit of the “American Dream.”
In that pursuit, the two have employed nearly 30 fellow immigrants in their businesses, effectively extending them the opportunity
for the same dream.
Lupe and Ramiro are highly en-
gaged in their community; from
the Hispanic Ministry of Calvary
Church to the
Muscatine
Chamber of
Commerce
to the City
Diversity
Committee,
the pair are leaders who serve as
mentors for fellow entrepreneurs.
They are committed to providing
guidance to those facing the same
first-generation obstacles they
overcame, though it doesn’t stop
there: Lupe and Ramiro have involved their two grown children
in their entrepreneurial success as
contributors to both businesses as
well.
The Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit
is an annual
convention
that
brings
immigrant entrepreneurs together with other
businesses to advance connections
and share business resources. The
event also serves to bring attention
to the strength of immigrant entrepreneurship in Iowa. Readers can

Responsible Growth/Sustainable Wages
Priority for New Muscatine Mayor
New business brings family approach to hearing
By Brad Gibson
As proud owners of Hearing
HealthCare of Muscatine, my wife
and I are excited to bring a combined 26 years experience working
together helping the hearing impaired. After spending the last 17
years in Nebraska, this move finds
us a little closer to home. After
narrowing our options down to either Davenport or Muscatine, the
choice was easy. So here we are!
One question my wife and I had
to ask ourselves was “what can we
offer Muscatine that they don’t already have?” We hope you answer
that question for us. We are Muscatine’s only locally owned hearing
Diana Broderson, the newly
elected Mayor of Muscatine will
assume her new role as mayor on
Jan 1, 2016. She is currently the
director of family programs at the
Muscatine Community Y, noting
that it is the most successful program of its kind in the state. She
added that she’s often called to different parts of the country to share
ways to start up similar programs.
Broderson said that as mayor she
would like to see us take “a leadership role in Iowa in making sure
that we adopt family friendly policies.”
Broderson spoke about the Mississippi Drive Corridor Project
along with the new Merrill Hotel
and Convention Center as bringing a lot of prospects to Muscatine.
“It can be a win-win opportunity for the community,” she said,
along with expressing concern that
the long-term jobs created by the
projects don’t lead to more minimum wage jobs. “We don’t need
that,” she said.
Broderson also stated her desire
to hire local contractors for city
projects. She said that she would
like to put together advisory committees to help determine responsible bids that include sustainable
wages for workers. She said “the
rest of us that are paying our taxes and are paying into programs to
help them, we’re supplementing
the wages of that employer’s person.” Broderson added that she
has already begun the process of
talking to people she thinks would
bring something to the table re-
garding these kinds of discussions.
Broderson also spoke about her
desire to receive more input from
younger citizens. She said that
she’d like to see young people have
more input into the city’s decision making process, adding “the
majority of decisions being made
which affect everyone in the community are made by those in upper
age brackets.”
Broderson is 1977 graduate
of Muscatine High School. She
earned her Bachelor’s Degree in
Philosophy from the University of
Iowa, along with extensive graduate work including several certificates in human resources and with
non-profit business management
in budget and finance. She also
serves on the Rotary Board of Directors and currently serves as its
Treasurer. She has taught for Iowa
Wesleyan University as adjunct
professor along with teaching business ethics at MCC.
Broderson was born and raised
in Muscatine. She and her husband Rodger have six children and
nine grandchildren. She said that
with her children all grown and
on their own, “this time presented the opportunity for me to give
back to the community,” Although
she didn’t think it realistic to think
that she could solve every problem
facing working families, she said,
“I will work on it and bring light
to it, and bring attention to it, and
keep that as a priority so that every
decision that we make, we’re looking at that ultimate goal for our
community.”
Energy assistance now
available to area residents
Applications are now being taken at Community Action of Eastern Iowa, starting in November
for the 2015-2016 Low Income
Home Energy Assistance Program
(LIHEAP). The program serves
homeowners and renters in Muscatine, Cedar, Clinton, and Scott
counties.
This program is not designed
to pay a household’s total energy
costs. The program will provide
supplemental assistance based on
several factors. Those factors include total household income,
household size, dwelling type, and
type of heating fuel, among other
factors. Last year approximately
8,000 households received assistance.
When applying, applicants
should bring proof of income for
the past 90 days, a recent copy of a
heating and electric bill, and social
security card for anyone who has
not had it verified by staff in the
past two years. Eligibility for the
program is based upon federally
established income guidelines. For
example, a family of four can earn
no more than $10,609 in a three
month period. Eligible households
may also receive weatherization
services such as insulation and other energy conservation measures.
For more information or to
apply, contact Community Action of Eastern Iowa, 1903 Park
Ave., #18 (inside the Muscatine
Mall). Appointments are taken on
Wednesdays. On other weekdays
no appointment is needed. Appointments can be made for the
West Liberty office.

Fighting Chance Solutions
launches new product
By Joel Kraushaar
In June of 2014, Fighting
Chance Solutions launched their
innovative active shooter security
device The Sleeve. In 12 months
the company opened a new office
in downtown Muscatine, and began placing their security product
in schools, office buildings, military bases, and medical facilities all
over the United States. The team at
FCS learned that while The Sleeve
is a tremendous product for most
door applications, often times in
residential and office settings the
door opened inward and often
times didn’t have a door closer.
This application meant they had
to find a new solution to help secure that door. While the company was founded on the tenants of
supporting security efforts during
an Active Shooter situation, their
new product, The Rampart Security Bar, has multiple uses. It has
been sold to customers to serve as a
door barricade in the event of a violent intruder, but this product has
merit as an extra layer of security
for your door like in a residential
setting. President and CEO of FCS
Daniel Nietzel said “This is something that I can see every person
who lives alone, or has a spouse
who travels a lot for work having
in their home.”
When FCS started down the
road of finding a security bar solution to provide their customers
they purchased several options
that you can purchase at a big box
store. Nietzel said “I went out and
bought the product my wife had
in her apartment in Cedar Falls
when we were in college, I figured
we could start selling that.” What
the team soon discovered was that
product failed even the calmest of
tests. Nietzel shared “that product
failed with even the smallest push,
I applied very little force and the
metal sheered to point where it was
irreparable.”
After rigorous testing and brainstorming sessions, The Rampart
Security Bar was their final product. It is an extruded aluminum
bar that has 4 adjustment points to
allow it to fit on almost any door.
A strong pin system allows the
force to disperse throughout the
bar and the angle causes the foot
to grip any flooring surface. Nietzel
literally was knocked down by the
kickback to door sent back into his
body when he attempted to breach
the door.
This company is constantly striving to offer inexpensive
solutions to help people stay safe
from an unwanted intruder entering their space. You can learn
more about their products at

How to care for houseplants in the winter

Happy
Thanksgiving

Houseplants add health and
beauty to our homes. They “transpire” oxygen for our use and take
in our waste carbon dioxide. And
their greenery and the blooms
from some houseplants brighten
a long Iowa winter. But, the indoor environments of our homes
during a typical winter are not the
most ideal for houseplants, most of
which originated in the tropics. So,
here are six tips for helping to keep
your houseplants “healthy and
happy” this winter.
1.
HUMIDITY – Most
houseplants prefer a humidity level of 40-50% whereas the relative
humidity in our houses in winter
may be only 10-20%. A humidifier is an excellent way to raise
humidity (and helps you have less
dry skin and hair). Two easy “cultural” practices also raise humidity around houseplants: grouping
plants together increases available
water vapor from soils and plants
themselves AND placing pots on
trays/saucers filled with pebbles/
gravel and water helps. NOTE A:
The pots should not sit in the water, but on top
of rock materials. NOTE
B:
Misting
is touted as
the answer to
adding needed
humidity to
houseplants,
but this is an
impractical
approach and
not recommended. One would
have to mist a houseplant several
times per day, and clean up the
accompanying drips around it,
which most of us don’t have the
time to do!
2.
CLEAN “AIRWAYS” –
Plant leaves get clogged with dust,
so keeping them and their stems
clean allows them to take in carbon
dioxide and give off oxygen, which
is their natural method of survival.
So, keep your plants clean by periodically spraying them lightly in
the shower or wiping them with a
damp cloth or sponge.
3. LIGHT
The angle of
the sun is different in the
winter
than
other
times
of the year, so
you may need
to move one or
more of your
houseplants to
a different location in your home where more
light is available. Also, make sure
that your windows are clean since
even a clean window reduces foot
candles of light by 10% and dirty
windows by even more.
4.
FERTILIZER – Unlike
spring and summer when plants
are actively growing, during the
winter months they grow very little during their “resting period”.
So, fertilizer for most houseplants
is not needed in the winter.
5.
WATER – Related to
this “resting period” of little to no
growth, houseplants don’t need as
much water in the winter months.
So, water only when a plant needs
it, which will be less often than in
other times of the year. A good rule
of thumb for watering is to do the
“finger check”. Stick a finger into
the soil to a depth of two inches. If
the finger comes out dry, the plant
needs water. And, remember, unlike some of you, plants don’t like
cold showers, so always water with
tepid water!
6.
TEMPERATURE
–
Houseplants thrive in daytime
temperatures of 65-75 degrees F.
and night time temperatures of 6065 degrees F. So, make sure that
the temperatures in your home
“around the clock” aren’t too cold
for your lovelies, particularly if
you leave for a warmer climate this
winter. Don’t leave them shivering
at home!

Remember Small Business Saturday
By Mary Mason
Small Business Saturday, the
Saturday after Thanksgiving, was
launched in 2010 by local and
small business owners nationwide.
Small business cannot compete
with the large retailer’s Black Friday sales, but movements like
Small Business Saturday help.
The purpose is to help make
shoppers aware of locally owned
businesses and what they offer,
during the holiday hustle and bustle, as well as year round.
Though the initiative was originally launched as a marketing
strategy by American Express,
many businesses and owners have
embraced the movement over the
past five years.
Many local vendors will have
special sales during the heavy shop-
ping weekend.
Downtown Muscatine stores will
be open and ask local residents to
stop in before heading out of town.
The day now universally known
as Black Friday is renowned for
deep discounts and steep price
cuts. It earned the name because
many retail establishments would
operate “in the red,” or with a
negative balance in their bank ac-
counts, for a majority of the year.
The holiday shopping season was
determined if the business would
prosper. So many patrons shopped
on the day after Thanksgiving that
the accounts would be moved to
a positive balance, or “into the
black.”
The hope is movements such as
Small Business Saturday will have
the same effect locally.
Behind The
Mic with Millie
Thanks and help
With Thanksgiving on our heels,
I wanted to share what I’m thankful for. I’m thankful for the family that’s there for me when I need
them. Sometimes it’s for a laugh.
Could be a good cry too, but whatever I need, I can count on them.
So thanks Mom, Dad, Ev, Mike,
Avery and Em; you all bless my life
in different ways and I’m lucky to
have you. This is the first time my
daughter has been away at college,
so I’ll be extra thankful to have her
back home to fuss over during the
long weekend. Not to be forgotten, I’m super thankful for all the
good food which I’ll probably eat
too much of this week.
The holiday season is upon us
and I need your help. I’ve signed
us up to ring the bell for the Salvation Army and all I need from you
is 1 hour of your time. My bell
ringing opportunity comes with a
bonus: at the end of Ringing with
Millie, one lucky ringer will receive
a fabulous prize package. I can’t
tell you what it is, but I can tell
you it’s pretty cool. If you’d like to
ring with me, call563-263-8600 or
you can send me a text at 563-2638600. All money raised stays local
and will help the Salvation Army
reach over 12,000 area families this
year. Ringing with Millie is generously supported by Miller’s Florist,
Fresh Vintage, Sal Vitale’s and Pro
Hair Designs Salon and Spa.
With Tony Tone
I’m Thankful
For Nolan
With Thanksgiving happening
this week I
wanted to
take time
to
talk
about my
brother inlaw, Nolan
Mills and
why I’m
thankful to have him in my life.
I first met Nolan in 2009 when
my wife and I first started dating
and I began spending time here in
Muscatine. I imagine many of you
recognize Nolan from the picture
above and perhaps even know him
because he’s a popular guy in this
town! Nolan was diagnosed with
moderate to severe autism when
he was three years old. Doctors
said that he may never talk, read,
or do the things most of us take
for granted. Thanks to the dedicated support from Nolan’s family he was talking by age four and
has progressed ever since. My wife,
Kasey works full-time with Nolan
and has helped improve his quality
of life on a daily basis. Nolan and
I were fast friends over our similar tastes in movies and television
shows. I’ll never fully understand
the impact that autism has on a
person but, what I do realize is
that for the most part people diagnosed with autism are aware of
their surroundings. My career in
radio allows my voice to be heard
and to speak for those that cannot. Currently, the state of Iowa is
considering privatizing Medicaid
which would directly effect Nolan and thousands of others across
the state. I know how important
Medicaid is and I really hope that
the aforementioned plan does not
happen. Nolan thank you for being in my life and for your contagious laughter that I always look
forward to hearing!

Thinking of the Holidays there
tends to be favorite holiday treats
and recipes that bring back memories, but this Holiday you might
find a new favorite with some new
treats that are being introduced.
For example here are the top 10
such as
• Hot Chocolate Chips Ahoy
cookies
• Hot Chocolate M&M’s
• Hershey’s Candy Corn Bars
• Pumpkin Spice Caramel Ghirardelli Squares
• Caramel Apple Twizzlers
• Jolly Rancher Caramel Apple
Lollipops
• M&M Candy Corn
• Caramel Apple Peeps
• Russell Stover Pumpkin Spice
Latte Candy Bar
with fried onions layered on the
top, which is high in sodium. Dark
turkey or white turkey meat? Dark
turkey meat is healthy if you skip
the skin of the turkey meat. White
turkey meat has more Iron and less
fat. Canned cranberries or fresh
cranberries? Canned cranberries
are actually surprisingly unhealthy.
They contain fruit, lots of preservatives, salt and sugar and sit
in grocery stores without going
bad. Fresh cranberries are naturally sweet and no extra sugar and
bonus you can easily make your
own sauce all you need is fresh
cranberries 1 cup of boiling water
cook until they burst add currants
and cinnamon. Mashed potatoes
or sweet potatoes? Sweet potatoes
have more fiber. It helps your digestive system. It has potassium
and good for your heart. How
some people make them; they
mash them up drizzle warm hon-
ey and maple syrup. Some people
make it as a dessert which is known
as sweet potato casserole. Sparking apple cider or hot apple cider?
Sparkling apple cider has artificial
flavors and way more sugar than
hot apple cider. Hot apple cider is
healthier, sweet, cold fighting, real
apples and real cinnamon.
4 Fun Fall Facts.
1. Did you know Illinois is America’s top state for pumpkin production?
2. Did you know that your tasteful caramel apples caused a rare
listeria outbreak?
3. The Starbucks coffee chain has
its first new fall coffee in four
years called the Toasted Graham Latte.
4. Starbucks introduces us to the
Pumpkin Spiced Latte that was
released September 8th.
• Pecan Pie M&M’s
Also many coffee shops and
bakeries introduce us to pumpkin bread, croissant, muffins and
cookies. They also introduce us to
their pumpkin coffee, such as the
pumpkin spice late and pumpkin
spice cream Frappuccino’s.
These are just examples of how
pumpkin has been incorporated in
our fall food in many ways other
than the old reliable pumpkin pie
for your Holiday dessert.
Seven things you didn’t know
about your favorite Holiday foods!
Pecan pie or pumpkin pie? Well
Pumpkin actually is healthier for

MHS Senior
Muscatine High School collects
money and cans for the canned
food drive every year. They come
up with multiple ways of collecting for the food drive that make
donating fun and interesting for
the high school students.
In the past they have done a
tootsie pop contest between classrooms and the bowls for hunger.
This year they continued to do
their traditional “CanBall tournament”.
CanBall is a volleyball tournament of all male players from Muscatine High School. Students and
parents can come to watch and
support their teams for 2 canned
food items or $2. They have also
been selling popcorn at lunch for
$1 or 2 canned goods.
They also started a new fundraiser this year called “Turn off
That Tune” where they play “bad”
or “annoying” music in the hallways between classes. The students
continued to have to deal with the
annoying music every passing period for as long as it took for them to
meet their goal. If students wanted
to donate to this fundraiser, they
could take cans or money to the
attendance office. Their goal was
not announced but they wanted to
raise more this year than they have
in the past.
Other fundraisers are a movie
night, “Mr. Muscatine”, and a coat
drive.
All fundraisers are thought of
and organized by the MHS student council. All students, teachers, and community members
were encouraged to get involved
with the food drive by dropping
off a canned food donation or
cash donation to Muscatine High
School’s main attendance office.
Donations will still be accepted
at this time.
