2015 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION AND REGALIA
Honorable Timothy R. Rice ’86
THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION AND THE REGALIA worn by the faculty
United States Magistrate Judge
U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Judge Timothy R. Rice ’86 is a United States Magistrate
Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of
Pennsylvania. He was appointed in March, 2005. Prior to
his appointment, Judge Rice served as an Assistant U.S.
Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and was
Chief of the Criminal Division from 2002 to 2005. In 2009,
Chief Justice John Roberts appointed him to the Criminal
Rules Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference.
Judge Rice was the 2010 recipient of the Philadelphia Bar
Association’s Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. Distinguished
Jurist Award. In 2011, he received Temple University
Beasley School of Law’s Gideon Award for “dedication
to the cause of justice for the indigent,” and in 2013,
he was the inaugural recipient of the Philadelphia Bar
Association’s Louis H. Pollak Award for serving the public
interest and increasing access to justice.
Judge Rice graduated magna cum laude in 1986 from the
Temple University School of Law, where he was editor-inchief of the Temple Law Review. He served as law clerk to
Honorable Anthony J. Scirica on the U.S. District Court
for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1986 to 1987,
and on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
from 1987 to1988.
and officers of the University symbolically represent the continuing link between the
modern American university and the founding of the great medieval universities in
Europe—chief among them Bologna, Paris, and Oxford. As those institutions were
derived from the Catholic Church, the universities adopted many of the ceremonial
trappings of the church.
THE CAPS AND GOWNS worn in the procession also vary from place to place.
Variations in design indicate the degrees held by the wearers, and many universities
in the United States have introduced colorful gowns and other distinguishing
details (in place of the customary clerical black from which all originated). The
Bachelor’s gown is a simple robe falling in straight lines from an elaborate yoke.
Its distinguishing characteristic is the long, pointed sleeves. Master’s gowns are
arranged so that the arm emerges from a long sleeve through a slit at the wrist
(replacing a former slit at the elbow). In most cases, the Doctor’s gown is marked
by velvet panels down the front and around the neck, and by three bars of the same
material on the bell shaped sleeves. It is cut much fuller than the other gowns and
may be ornamented in color. Faculty colors are occasionally seen in the sleeve bars
and paneling.
THE CAPS also vary according to the customs of the university from which
the wearer received a degree. Although most American universities adopted the
“mortarboard” style of Oxford, others have chosen styles based on other European
institutions. The color of the tassel worn with the cap may be black for any degree;
or, the color may be that of the faculty of the major field of learning. Persons
holding doctoral degrees and governing officials of institutions are entitled to wear
tassels of gold metallic thread.
THE HOOD through length and color shows the degree and the specialization
of the wearer, and the university that granted the degree. The color of the trim
identifies the academic discipline. At the Law School graduation, the purple lining
identifies the wearer as a recipient of a law degree.

PLEDGE OF PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENT
I understand that today I am joining an academic community and embarking on a
professional career.
I pledge to respect the academic endeavor that I am about to undertake, and to uphold the
honor and integrity of the legal profession that I seek to enter.
I will conduct my academic, professional and personal life with honesty, dignity, and care,
honoring the values and standards that are expressed in the rules governing Temple Law
School and that are shared by the legal profession.
I will treat all of my colleagues—students, staff and faculty—with fairness and respect,
even in disagreement.
I will remember that my actions reflect not only on me, but also on Temple Law School
and on the legal profession.
I understand that one of the many privileges of the legal profession is the opportunity to
serve others, and I commit myself to seeking equal justice for all.
I take this pledge freely and upon my honor.
