ANNUAL GALA RAISES MORE THAN
$350,000 FOR FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
During a special evening featuring cancer survivors, fighters and
supporters, more than 600 people attended the WellStar Foundation
16th Annual Gala on Saturday, April 20 at the Cobb Galleria. In the
past four years, the WellStar Foundation Gala has raised almost $1.5
million to fight two diseases that impact Georgians more than any
other—cardiac disease and cancer. The 2013 Gridiron Gala, featuring
several Atlanta Falcons’ players and cheerleaders, raised more than
$350,000 for WellStar’s A Campaign Today for More Tomorrows,
which will further transform cancer care in our community.
“The evening’s fun and excitement was surpassed only by the generosity of those in attendance,” said Tracey Atwater, president of the
WellStar Foundation. “Funds raised that evening will make a huge
difference in the lives of many patients of WellStar.”

master of ceremonies, and the evening included
Atlanta Falcons, Corey Peters (Defensive Tackle),

Research shows that screening using a low-dose CT scan can help detect early lung cancer before clinical signs or symptoms become evident.
Early stage cancers can be more easily treated and more frequently cured than later stage cancers.

Kathy DeJoseph is a very happy and
proud mother and grandmother. Five
years ago, Kathy learned of a national
study on the early detection of lung
cancer that involved the use of a lowdose CT scan. She enrolled in that
study at WellStar Kennestone Hospital with Dr. William
Mayfield. The first few years showed no signs of lung
cancer. The fourth year an abnormality was detected
and Kathy was diagnosed with early stage lung cancer.
The WellStar STAT Clinic Team immediately went to work.
“I decided if I survived it, I would volunteer. It’s been an
amazing journey. I’m a one-year survivor now!” says
Kathy. Since her recovery, Kathy volunteers at two

A Life Saved on Veterans Day
The Veterans Day Lung Cancer Screening Event was held on November 11, 2012. Free screenings for
veterans at risk were made possible by donors to the WellStar Foundation, and we are forever grateful.
Vickie Beckler, the WellStar lung cancer screening program coordinator, was out in the
community promoting the event for those veterans at risk. She was also looking for a
new home and called her realtor to view a house in Dallas, Georgia. The realtor was not
available, but the owner, Emil Infusino, was there to show the property. Vickie noticed
Emil Infusino
a U.S. Army ball cap that Mr. Infusino was wearing and learned that he had served in the
and family
U.S. Army and Navy. Vickie asked if he could share the free lung cancer screening flyers
with his veteran friends. Although he agreed to let his fellow veterans know, Mr. Infusino had no intention of being
screened since he did not consider himself at risk. Vickie’s passion helped raise his awareness and at the last minute,
he changed his mind and decided to go. The screening event involved a very simple procedure using a low-dose CT
scan that can detect early stages of lung cancer before clinical signs or symptoms are present.
Out of the 40 veterans who attended the screening that day, Mr. Infusino was the one whose results came back
with an abnormality. That same day he received a call asking him to come in for additional testing. He quit smoking
for good immediately and became very worried. Mr. Infusino was placed on the schedule in the WellStar STAT Clinic
just two days later (on November 13). A full team including an oncologist, pulmonologist, thoracic surgeon, and a
nurse navigator quickly worked together to design a thorough treatment plan for Mr. Infusino. Once a biopsy was
performed, the cancer was determined to be at Stage 1 and it was decided that surgery was needed to remove the
upper left lobe of his lung and lymph gland. The surgery was performed on December 3 and soon after, Mr. Infusino was declared cancer-free.
This type of cancer would have been terminal had it not been caught early. Mr. Infusino and Vickie have become close
since the surgery, and he calls her his “guardian angel.” He and his wife of 25 years, Kathleen, have three children.
His daughter, Christina, is getting married this May. Because he is a survivor, Emil Infusino will be there to walk her
down the aisle.
Early detection is key because early stage lung cancer is more treatable and curable. The Patient Assistance component
of A Campaign Today for More Tomorrows helps those patients who are at risk, but cannot afford screening.
Thoughtful Walker Student Makes a Difference
This winter, Walker School student Anja Shroff asked her friends to make
donations to the WellStar Foundation in lieu of birthday gifts. Anja’s parents
(Dr. Paulomi Shroff and Dr. Sahir Shroff) help WellStar fight cancer each day.
It is clear that making a difference runs in the family!

WellStar Foundation’s Men in Philanthropy:
Business Leaders Coming Together For a Better Community
Purpose Our purpose is to create a continual program of core giving for philanthropic-minded men in support
of healthcare issues and initiatives in our community.
Mission Our mission is to inform men of the opportunity to fulfill their philanthropic potential by sharing
the WellStar experience in the community, thus encouraging others to help create world-class healthcare.
Events The purpose of the gatherings is to impart information about a variety of health-related topics, networking with other businessmen in the community and general fellowship. This group gathers on a quarterly
basis for fun outings in local restaurants, businesses, homes, or clubs. There is an annual business roundtable
that is held with WellStar Senior Leadership to discuss relevant topics for business and community leaders.
WellStar Health System President and CEO, Reynold Jennings, and Financial Advisor and Healthcare Expert,
Senior Vice President of The Bottoms Group, David Bottoms, discussed healthcare in our community at the
business roundtable that took place on March 6.

Paulding Business Leaders Give Generously
To New WellStar Paulding Hospital
Sue and John Wadsworth of Hamby’s, Inc.,
have helped make 2013 brighter for many
lives in Paulding county thanks to their
support of the WellStar Foundation. The
Wadsworths, who have invested their time,
money, and hard work in Paulding county
Sue and John Wadsworth

donation and will have two patient rooms at
WellStar Paulding Hospital
the new WellStar Paulding Hospital named
to honor them. This gift will bring the hospital closer to the goal of
having all rooms completed.
“We decided that we wanted to donate to a project that would last
and make a difference in people’s lives,” said Sue Wadsworth.
“WellStar Paulding Hospital seemed like a natural fit. The old hospital
served Paulding county for more than 50 years. The new hospital with
its location and size should touch the lives of many more. Therefore,
we feel that the donation to the hospital was the right thing to do.”
Hamby’s is based in Paulding county and has been family-owned and
operated since 1965. The Wadsworths expanded the business with a
commercial division, as well.
“We live in Paulding and so do our children and grandchildren. Each
of our family members has had at least one urgent or major health
issue. When those times occurred, Paulding Hospital was the only
thing that helped.”
As a not-for-profit healthcare system, WellStar reinvests 100% of
every dollar donated into new programs and enhanced services for
the benefit of the communities we serve. To learn more about the
various donation options at different dollar amounts, contact
Gene Weeks at [email protected] or 470-956-6676.
Paulding Midpoint Celebration
WellStar Health System and the
Paulding Chamber hosted a midpoint

Chamber President Carolyn Wright,
WellStar Paulding Hospital President
Mark Haney, WellStar Foundation
President Tracey Atwater, and Paulding
County Chamber Chair Don Barbour
welcomed everyone.
When completed, the hospital will be
eight floors and 295,000 sq ft. with a
120,000 sq ft precast parking deck and
a four-story, 82,220 sq ft medical
