A question was dribbled around among club members and golf
enthusiasts in the State who claim to know the KGS course like
the back of their hand: “Does the existing KGS 36-hole golf course
measure up to what is normally considered as a good golf course?”
Which begs the question: “What makes a good golf course?” There
are hundreds of opinions on what makes a good golf course. The
answer, simplified, is as follows: a great deal has to do with the layout
of the land upon which it is being built. An intelligent golf course
design would incorporate scenery, variety, shot making, routing,
challenge for signature holes, and last but not least conditioning of
the golf course.
A good golf course needs to have rolling hills, preferably with water
features, trees, an area that can be used as a fairway, an area for a
rough, and room for sand traps. All these features not only contribute
to a scenic golf course but can also help golfers improve their skills
in shot making.
A good golf course should be designed so as to make every hole
different and unique unto itself. If every hole were designed to have
the same features, the course would be boring to play. A good golf
course should have a variety of holes that dogleg right and dogleg
left, with enough blind spots acting as obstacles so the flag cannot
be seen from the tee box. It should also have a mixture of great length
and medium length between holes; and short ones that require high
shots, low ones, the fades and the draws. Such degrees of difficulty
and variety may force golfers to use every club in his bag to come
up with decent scores at the end of the round.
Routing is one of the most important design features of any course.
It is the direction the holes are played. It is normal for a golf course
to be affected by prevailing winds since it is outdoors and in a
wide open space. Any golf architect worth his salt would take the
wind factor into consideration. Furthermore, course design should
emphasise on a variety of directions and lengths between holes to
avoid boredom and to avoid golfers from playing a group of similar
holes in succession.
Another thing that makes a good golf course is the people who work
to maintain it. Some courses have professional groundskeepers
who have the job of keeping the fairways smooth, the roughs rough
and the greens closely mown and cropped. This can make all the
difference in the world to golfers.
KGS has got all the criteria it needs to make it a good course except
for the conditioning that it needs to improve to make the criteria
complete. Here is a frequently asked question: Is KGS golf course
in good shape? The question was raised and challenge put to the
Club’s Management Committee to resolve this long baffling issue.
The engagement of Mr Sermsak Vijitrat from Thailand as a Consultant
was an attempt to answer the question and solve this perennial
problem once and for all. His task would be to identify ways to
rectify them. Major steps were taken to improve the prevailing poor
drainage which is the main culprit to the poor course condition.
Since Mr Sermsak began to work on remedial measures there were
significant signs of improvement to the course. However, due to
4 • The Golfer
Captain’s
MESSAGE
MESSAGE
his health, Mr Sermsak had to cut short his service at the club and
returned to Thailand to seek medical treatment.
The Club employed a golf course superintendent, Mr. Paramjit Singh,
from the Peninsula to continue with the work that Mr. Sermsak had
left behind. Mr. Paramjit Singh has excellent credentials, a man of
wide experience and knowledge in golf course maintenance. We
are confident that Mr. Paramjit Singh will succeed in turning our golf
course into a pleasant, better and more playable year round than it
has ever been. The course superintendent, the management team
and the maintenance crew by themselves cannot, and will not, be
able to raise the course standard to a premium quality.
For golf course conservation, preservation and sustainability we
need a concerted effort of all club members to love our golf course,
treat it with great respect as though it were a sacred ground. It is
everyone’s duty to repair divots, rake sand traps (bunkers), keep
the course clean and refrain from littering. The Captain’s Committee
has flagged off its “Love Our Course” campaign with the “Repair
Divot Campaign” launched in August 2014. The objective of these
campaigns is to create awareness among our members, appealing to
them to play their proper roles that every golfer must play in keeping
our golf course its pristine condition at all times and to be proud of
being its member.
With the new course management team and skilful maintenance
crew taking over, our golf course is beginning to show positive signs
of transformation. I must confess that it will be some time before
we could beat our chests and punch our fists in the air to celebrate
our success. With that cautious optimism, I concur with the general
feeling that, at the current rate of progress and improvement, it will
be two to three years at the earliest before we could reach a point
where our objectives are successfully met.

KELAB GOLF SARAWAK
Welcome to the third quarter edition of the e-Golfer for 2014.
After the lull during the month of Ramadan, the Club had a
flurry of golf tournaments which included the Hari Raya Golf
Special, Sarawak Senior Masters, Sarawak Interclub, Sarawak
Grand Championship, Pusaka Golf, Sarawak Amateur Closed,
Professional Golf Malaysia-Asian Development Tour – MNRB
Sarawak leg, Captain’s Alumni and Transview Golf.
We had the privilege and honour of our President, YAB Ketua
Menteri Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Hj Adenan bin Hj Satem
gracing the inaugural Sarawak Grand Championship bearing the
Tan Sri Adenan Satem Challenge Trophy. We extend our sincere
thanks to the Sarawak Golf Association especially the President,
Mr Hoan Kee Hock for kindly selecting KGS as the venue for this
prestigious event.
I would like to congratulate the KGS Team for winning the Sarawak
Interclub Championship and our Juniors for doing extremely well
at the Sarawak Open.
The Divot Repair Campaign was officially launched on 9/8/14 and
the results are very encouraging. On behalf of the Divot Repair
Campaign Task Force, I would like to thank golfers, maintenance
crew and caddies alike for their cooperation and look forward to
continuing efforts to love and care for our course.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Muslim
members a Selamat Hari Raya Haji.

Ti t l e : The Time Keeper
Author : Mitch Albom
From the inspirational author of TUESDAYS
WITH MORRIE comes the compelling tale of
the man who became Father Time.
Banished for centuries, as punishment
for trying to measure time, the inventor of
the world’s first clock is finally granted his
freedom, along with a mission: a chance to
redeem himself by teaching two people the
true meaning of time.
He returns to our world and embarks on a
journey with two unlikely partners: a teenage girl who is about to
give up on life and a wealthy, ageing businessman who wants to
live for ever. To save himself, he must save them both.
Gripping, and filled with deep human truth, this unforgettable
story will inspire readers everywhere to reconsider their own
notions of time and just how precious it truly is.

Ti t l e : True Love
Author : Jude Deveraux
When Alix Madsen accepts the quirky bequest of Adelaide
Kingsley to spend a year in her charming nineteenth-century
Nantucket house, it soon becomes clear that Adelaide had
a rather specific task for Alix: to solve the two-hundredyear –old mystery of Valentina Kingsley’s disappearance.
Unbeknown to Alix, her fellow guest, architect Jared
Montgomery, is relishing his task of secretly looking out for
her. As sparks of undeniable chemistry fly between them, ghosts of the past
begin to reveal themselves-some of them literally. Finding their lives inextricably
entwined with the turbulent fortunes of their ancestors, Alix and Jared discover
that only by righting historic wrongs can they hope to be together.
Praise for TRUE LOVE:
‘A beautiful island, a sexy man, and plenty of secrets- this is a wonderful
writer at her best’ ~ SUSAN MALLERY
‘A romantic story of love so deep it survives centuries’ ~ KIRKUS REVIES

Not without you, she’d said. And l let her
down.
Ellani dan Ellana, kembar serias yang tinggal bersama mak ngahnya selepas
kematian ibubapa mereka. Mak Ngah Gayah membezakan kasih sayangnya.
Ellana dilayan bagaikan puteri. Sedangkan Ellani diperlakukan tidak ubah seperti
hamba abdi.
Hollywood, 1961: when beautiful, muchloved movie star Eve Noel vanishes at the
height of her fame, no-one knows where,
much less why.
Fifty years later another young British
actress,Sophie Leigh, lives in Eve’s house
high in the Hollywood Hills. Eve Noel was
her inspiration and Sophie, disenchanted
with her life in LA, finds herself becoming increasingly obsessed
with the mystery of her idol’s disappearance. And the more she
discovers, the more she realizes Eve’s life is linked with her own.
Sophie needs to unravel the truth to save them both- but is
she already too late? Becoming increasingly entangled in Eve’s
world and as past and present start to collide, Sophie must
decide whose life she is really living…
Ti t l e : The GODS of Guilt
Author : Michael Connelly
Mickey Haller gets the text “Call me ASAP -187,” and the
California penal code for murder immediately gets his attention.
Murder cases have the highest stakes and the biggest paydays.
But when Mickey discovers that the victim was a prostitute
he once thought he had rescued, he knows there is no way
he’ll let this one go. The case is suddenly about more that the
guilt or innocence of the defendant- it’s about finding out what
happened to a woman he cared about. Instead of saving her,
Mickey might have been the one who put her in danger.
Now Mickey must follow his gut instinct
directly into a dangerous world of intrigue
and double-dealing to get justice for both
of his clients, living and dead. As he faces
the “gods of guilt” – the jurors who will
deliver the ultimate verdict – he’s forced
to struggle with his personal demons for a
shot at his own redemption.
“Kenapalah kau tak mati ikut mak kau! Kau ni memang menyusahkan aku! Dahlah
hidup merempat! Buat tak sedar diri pulak! Kalau kau berani lagi melawan aku.
Aku sagat-sagat muka kau dengan berus dawai. Biar jadi hodoh! Dasar budak
tak guna!” hamun Mak Ngah Gayah.
Sedih. Menangis. Tak setitis pun air mata Ellani keluar. Untuk apa? Itulah rutin
hidupnya. Mak hamun, pukul dah sebati dalam dirinya. Nak menangis? Berbaloi
ke? Dapat raih simpati mak ngah? Jangan harap!
Zarul Zafran lelaki tampan yang berkerjaya sebagai seorang pensyarah.
Cinta pandang pertama pada Ellana membawa mereka hamper ke gerbang
perkahwinan. Takdir menentukan segalanya Zarul ditimpa kemalangan. Ellana
bolehkan mati dalam hatinya.
Dalam Ellani melalui kemelut hidupnya. Kasih lelaki ini bolehkan beralih padanya.
Adoi! Serasa nak gugur jantung Ellani dibuatnya. Cinta? Kasih? Apa semuanya
ni? Ellani sukar untuk menerimanya. Lelaki yang hamper menjadi abang iparnya
bolehkan jatuh hati dengannya. Pelik!
Namun, demi kebahagiaan seorang yang telah dianggap seperti ibu. Ellani akur
dengan ketentuan jodohnya. Zarul Zafran akhirnya menjadi suaminya. Berbagai
onak dan duri dilalui.
The Proton People Think of Everything
A
man got a phone call from his wife at work one day and she asked him to stop at the
supermarket and pick up some groceries. Reminding her that this was his golf league night,
he said he would be happy to go to the supermarket AFTER playing his round of golf.
After playing golf, he stopped at the supermarket and picked up two bags full of groceries. He then
proceeded to walk out of the supermarket to his Proton Waja. Upon reaching his Proton Waja, he
found it difficult to reach into his pocket to pull his keys out to open his car boot because his arms
were full with two bags of groceries.
He saw a beautiful woman walking nearby and he asked her, “Could you please do me a favour?”
“Sure,” she replied. He went on to say, “I can’t reach into my pocket and get my Proton Waja
keys out to open my car boot and put my groceries away.” “Do you think you could reach into my
pocket and pull my car keys out?” “No problem,” she replied.
When she pulled the keys out, two golf tees also were pulled out as well and fell to the ground.
She bent over and picked them up. Looking at the golf tees in the palm of her hand, somewhat
quizzically she asked the man, “Gee, what are these for?” He replied, “Oh, those are to keep my
balls in the air while I’m driving.” To which she commented, “Boy, those Proton people think of
everything.”
The Guardian Angel’s Mistake
A
51-year old lady golfer was enjoying her golf under the glorious weather condition. On the
15th tee box, she had a heart attack just after teeing off. She was taken to the nearest hospital
for treatment.
While on the operating table she had a near-death experience. During that experience, she saw
her guardian angel and asked if this was her time. The angel said no and explained that she had
another 30-40 years to live.
Upon her recovery, she decided to just stay in the hospital for a few more days to have a facelift,
liposuction and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair colour. She
figured that since she had another 30 or 40 years she might as well make the most of it. She
walked out of the hospital after the last operation and was killed by an ambulance speeding up to
the ICU building next to the hospital.
The angel replied, “Sorry, I didn’t recognise you.”
“Ellani Binit Rashdan, aku Zarul Zafran Bin Dato’ Azli ceraikan kau dengan
talak satu! Kau keluar dari rumah aku. Hak penjagaan anak-anak aku serahkan
sepenuhnya pada kau!
A golfer walking along Damai Beach was deep in prayer. Suddenly the sky clouded above his head
and, in a booming voice, the Lord said, “Because you have TRIED to play golf in honest ways,
never cheating, never lying, I will grant you one wish.”
Ellani…cukup derita itu! Cukup derita itu! Dia bagaikan
terdengar-dengar suara arwah emaknya dan itulah juga
kata-kata yang dijerit dalam hatinya.
BAD RELIGIOUS
JOKE DISCLAIMER:
Build Me A Bridge
“Allahuakbar! Mak kenapa dia buat Lani macam ni mak!
Kenapa dia hina Lani sampai macam ni sekali! Apa salah
Lani mak? Apa dosa Lani? Ya Allah! Kuatkan aku Ya Allah!
Kuatkan imanku menghadapi dugaan-Mu ini! Raungnya.
To break the monotony
of serious writing, “The
Golfer” includes jokes
in this issue for your
entertainment. KGS
members are welcome to
contribute jokes to help
enrich our collection.
They will be credited (or
blamed) for whatever
jokes they sent in and
are published in this
section. “The Golfer”
reserves the right to edit
any joke submitted. We
will make sure that jokes
published are decent
and acceptable humour.
She arrived in heaven. There, she saw her guardian angel and said, “I thought you said I had
another 30 – 40 years!!”
Dendam yang berlingkar dalam hati mak ngah dan Ellana menambahkan
derita dalam hidup Ellani. Kasih Zarul kembali beralih pada cinta pertamanya.
Pengorbanan Ellani tidak dihargai. Ellani diseksa. Jiwanya merana.
Hebat lelaki ini! Hanya melalui SMS dia menjatuhkan talak pada Ellani. Menggigil
Ellani membacanya.
JOKES
The golfer said, “Build a bridge to Johor Bahru so I can drive over anytime I want.” The Lord said,
“Your request is very materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking.
The supports required to reach the bottom of South China Sea! The concrete and steel it would
take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your
desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that would honour and
glorify me.”
The pensive golfer thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, “Lord, I wish that I could
understand my wife. I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s thinking when she gives me
the silent treatment when I come home after a game of golf, why she cries, what she means when
she says ‘nothing’s wrong,’ and how I can make a woman truly happy.”
We recognise that
religious humour can be
risky. It is our hope that
by laughing at ourselves
(and others) we can
make this subject more
approachable. If you find
religious jokes published
here objectionable, we
apologise. As with most
jokes, the original authors
are unknown – but we
thank them anyway.
The Lord replied, “You want two lanes or four on that bridge?”
