“Adopts” Southern Maryland Carousel Horse!
The Charles County Arts Alliance is pleased to
announce that it is the proud “parent” of one of
the beautifully hand-carved wooden horses of
the Southern Maryland Carousel Group! On May
3, 2014, we officially “adopted” Lord Baltimore, a
very handsome steed depicting the Maryland State
flag with emblems of the Calvert and Crossland
families. The “adoption papers” were completed and
first announced publicly during our CCAA Annual
Membership Meeting and Reception held at the
Waldorf West Library.
Arts Alliance President Robert Rausch presented a check to Burkey Boggs,
President of the Southern Maryland Carousel Group, and noted that the total
“adoption” cost of $6,000 would be paid over a three-year period. We were then
surprised and delighted to learn that our very own Lord Baltimore had been
selected to serve as the “lead horse” – the leader of the pack – for the planned
carousel!
The Southern Maryland Carousel Group was founded in 2004 by Boggs and a
group of highly skilled traditional woodcarvers in our region. Their nonprofit
organization’s mission is to create a full-scale working reconstruction of the
beloved wooden carousel that was located at the turn-of-the-century Marshall
Hall Amusement Park on the Potomac River in Charles County. This amusement
park was extremely popular across the entire Southern Maryland region and
with Washington, DC residents before the park closed in the 1960’s.
The Southern Maryland Carousel Group to date has carved a total of 52 horses
and other animals, along with a set of unique wooden plaques of “famous
heads” of Charles County and Maryland historical figures. Once completed, the
reconstructed carousel will be housed in an enclosed building that will also offer
traditional woodcarving classes. The final site location for the reconstructed
carousel is to be determined.
Feel free to stop by and check out Lord Baltimore
the next time you are in La Plata! He is located
in the atrium lobby of the new Courthouse. The
Charles County Arts Alliance is extremely pleased
to contribute funding to this very worthy project,
to help ensure that this increasingly rare folk art
of traditional woodcarving is passed on to future
generations to appreciate and enjoy!
President’s Letter
Dear Members and Friends,
This month's letter features a stroll down memory lane with CCAA Board Member Cecelia Keller. Enjoy!
“A Board Member Looks Back...”
I was fortunate in 1987 to have been among the founding members of
the CCAA. Little did we know that in December 2013, we would have
a building at the Charles County Fairgrounds for the first annual Kris
Kringle Christmas Market, a showcase for all the arts: music, visual
arts, drama, dance and literature. For those who attended, you know
we were “busting at the seams” in that building as music was played,
dancers danced, artisans displayed and sold their wares, and the
CCAA’s mission was accomplished: to promote all the arts in Charles
County, to build partnerships with other non-profit organizations
and the business community and to enhance the quality of life for the
citizens of Charles County.
This was repeated at ArtsFest 2014 at the La Plata Town Hall. I felt a sense of pride when I overheard a “middleaged” couple remark to one of our volunteers that they had come from another county (much larger in population)
and they didn’t have anything like this! A free event for all ages to enjoy!
I am also proud of our fund-raising success which enables the CCAA to award scholarships to qualified students
in each county high school and the College of Southern Maryland. (Always donate toward a ticket for one of our
beautiful, gourmet gift baskets to support this endeavor.)
Last, but not least, is how proud I am when the CCAA opens a show at the various public galleries throughout
our county. How often is a visual artist able to display works in a library, the county government building, or a
hospital? Thanks to our Gallery Committee and faithful volunteers, our shows happen four times every year for the
public to admire when they least expect it.
I am thankful to have been involved in the early stages of the CCAA. I am even happier that I am back!

CCAA Board of Directors Holds
Annual Summer Retreat at Solomons, Maryland
On Saturday, August 3, members of the CCAA Board and staff participated in an all day retreat at Solomons,
Maryland. The purpose of the retreat was to review the challenges and successes of the past year and to plan for
FY 2015.
The Board reviewed and approved the new budget and calendar, evaluated
the programs and activities of the previous year and held committee meetings
for Events, Scholarships, ArtsFest and our five-day participation at the
Charles County Fair. In addition, the Board was given a complete overview
of the Gallery Committee by its Chair, Gale Kladitis; and, of the Outreach
and Marketing Committee (including the new
website) by its Chair, Diane Rausch.
The last hour of the day was devoted to
“stuffing” 250 art boxes with art supplies that will be donated to the Children’s
County Children's Aid Society. These will be given to needy elementary students
at the beginning of the next school year. Earlier in the day, the Board determined
to order supplies for an additional 50 art boxes in order to match our last year’s
donation to this worthy cause. This is our eighth year of donating art boxes to the
Children's Aid Society."

Charles County Arts Alliance Awards Arts Scholarships
Five Charles County Graduates Receive $1000 Awards
For over fifteen years, the Charles County Arts Alliance (CCAA) has offered arts scholarships to one qualifying
graduating senior from each Charles County public high school and a graduating student from the College of
Southern Maryland. These individual $1,000 scholarships will help students continue their visual, performing
and/or literary arts college education. All scholarship recipients are Charles County residents and have
each earned a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA). Each student’s application included a
detailed resume, a 500-word essay about his/her artistic and academic accomplishments and goals, letters of
recommendation, and an official transcript of grades.
The CCAA is proud to announce the recipients for this year's arts scholarship awards, who represent the highest
level of artistic talent and academic achievement in Charles County schools. The recipients include: Maryn Fuller
of Henry E. Lackey High School, Tessa Norman of Maurice J. McDonough High School, Monica Garza of
North Point High School, Carl McManus of Westlake High School, and Kenneth Waters, Jr. of the College of
Southern Maryland.
Maryn Fuller, an outstanding student, artist, and athlete from Henry E. Lackey High
School, held a High Honors level GPA on a weighted scale, which included multiple
Honors and Advanced Placement courses. She was a member of the National Honor
Society, the Student Government Association, and appeared on the Principal’s
Honor Roll. This active student found time to perform with the Henry E. Lackey
Symphonic Band and served as the band president. To balance her academic and
artistic activities, she also pursued athletic interests. She excelled at swimming
for the school varsity swim team, played varsity field hockey, and played soccer
for the Bryans Road Soccer Association. In addition, her volunteer record included
participating in several school, local, and regional programs and events: Key Club,
Relay for Life, Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery, and swim-athons to raise money for charity. Ms. Fuller will be pursuing a career in the field of
graphic design at Frostburg University.
Monica Garza from North Point High School maintained a Highest Honors level
GPA on a weighted scale while taking rigorous Honors and Advanced Placement
courses. Her academic record included membership in the National Honor Society
and National Technical Honor Society. Her school artistic achievements included
playing French horn in the Symphonic Band, where she was seated 1st chair. She
sang with the Eagles in Harmony Honors Chorus and earned at spot in All-County
Choir for two years. Outside of school, she performed regularly with the College
of Southern Maryland and Port Tobacco Players community theaters, in such
productions as Into the Woods. Pocahontas, HONK! and others. In addition, she
appeared as an extra for mainstream films, such as War of the Worlds and Ladder
49. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, she has been seen in commercials for
Ruby Tuesday, Fannie May, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Central PA, and Kentucky
Fried Chicken. This student will continue her professional acting career in Musical
Theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

Carl McManus from Westlake High School maintained a Highest Honors level GPA on
a weighted scale that included multiple Honors and Advanced Placement courses. In
addition to his academic achievements, his artistic achievements included multiple theater
and chorus performances. He appeared in the Westlake Theatre Company in the stage
shows Shrek: The Musical, Snow Angel, Curtains, and Little Shop of Horrors. He was inducted
into the International Thespian Society Troupe in January 2012, and served as the Board
Historian. In addition to singing in Westlake’s Men’s Choir, Chamber Choir, and A Cappella
Ensemble, he has performed for the past three years in All-County Chorus and Tri-County
Chorus. Mr. McManus will continue his acting studies as a theater major at Frostburg
University.
Tessa Norman from Maurice J. McDonough High School graduated with Honors level GPA
on a weighted scale that included several rigorous Honors courses. She had an extensive
list of acting roles in McDonough High School theater productions, including West Side
Story, Grease, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid. She learned
other aspects of the craft by working as stage manager for Peter Pan. During her senior
year, she immersed herself in theater studies, including Advance Acting, Stage Production,
and Multi-media 2 and added an Independent Study in Theater. According to her drama
teacher, this student has called her stage and classroom leadership “invaluable.” She was
considered a “triple threat” in her acting, singing, and dancing. It is no surprise to learn
that Ms. Norman will attend Frostburg State University to study as a Theatrical Studies
Major.
Kenneth Waters, Jr. started at the College of Southern Maryland as an accounting and
business student, but changed his focus when the bright lights of the theater beckoned to
him. His decision to focus on theater cemented his future college and career plans. His
newfound purpose was demonstrated in a cumulative level Honors GPA and appearances
in CSM and local theater productions, including Willie Wonka and Little Shop of Horrors.
He has built and managed stage sets, acted, and sung, all while working off campus in
both full- and part-time jobs. Mr. Waters will continue his college education at North
Carolina A&T to pursue his dream of teaching theater.

Arts Alliance Selects a New Board Member
Ronald Brown to Fill Vacancy
As of July 17, 2014, Ron Brown joined the CCAA Board of Directors, replacing Keri Williams who was unable to
complete her term of office because of health issues and her work schedule. Ron will serve the remainder of Keri's
term, which carries him through to June 30, 2015. The Board thanks Keri for her contribution to the Arts Alliance
and wishes her good health and success in her future endeavors.
Now, meet Ronald Brown . . .
Beginning in 1969, Charles County became a big part of my life when I was hired to teach
History courses at the new Lackey High School. The following year I applied for a faculty
position and was hired at the then Charles County Community College. Over the next
forty-four years, I advanced to the rank of professor and was there for the transition to
the College of Southern Maryland. Courses I taught included the Western Civilization and
United States surveys and topical courses, notably, the History of Maryland, Southern
Maryland Culture, History and the Arts: Renaissance and Reformation, and the History
of African Americans. Similar to many faculty members, I assumed other responsibilities
associated with various committees and serving as the President of the Faculty Senate for
over ten years.
Though much of my teaching attention was directed toward the survey courses, I became
interested in local history which led to the development and teaching of the state and local
history courses mentioned previously. That interest also led me to join the Historical
Society of Charles County, where I now sit on the Board. Additionally, I was invited to join the Charles County
Heritage Commission and have been serving as its President for the past several years.
My college responsibilities sifted primarily to administrative duties in 2009, when I was appointed the Chair of
the Fine Arts and Humanities Division which was later reorganized as the Communication, Arts and Humanities
Division. Consequently, I became even more familiar with the Arts, as the division was responsible for, among
other disciplines and degrees, Art History, Studio Arts, Music, Theatre and Dance. I have always admired, and
daresay envied, those who have creative talents in the visual and performing arts. I supported those faculty
members and their programs administratively and supported them and their students personally by attending
all artistic, musical and theatrical performances. During my tenure as chair, the faculty promoted an ambitious
schedule of arts activities that made me a frequent member of the audience for FA Theatre performances. I was
even able to take the stage in a couple of bit parts and frequently emceed for the college’s summer Chautauqua
and Twilight Performance shows.
I became familiar with the Charles County Arts Alliance through those college theatre activities, standing in for
the college president at the fall gala event, and becoming acquainted with Bob Rausch. Shortly after retiring,
I received a gracious invitation from BoB to become a CCAA Director which I happily accepted. Now that I’m a
Director, I hope to bring my energies to bear in advancing the mission and goals of the CCAA and participating
in the organization’s ambitious arts activities. Additionally, as I embark on retirement, I hope to continue my
participation in the two mentioned history organizations. The CCAA and similar non-profit and voluntary
organizations contribute significantly to the quality of county cultural life and I want to be part of that important
endeavor.

meet on the second Saturday in July, from 9:30 10:30 am. Anyone interested in joining, please

org. The P.D. Brown Library is located at 50 Village
Street, Waldorf, MD 20602.
August 2: The Age of Innocence
by Edith Wharton. The Age of
Innocence won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize
for Fiction. The novel centers on
an upper-class couple's impending
marriage, and the introduction of a
woman plagued by scandal whose
presence threatens their happiness.
It was lauded for its accurate portrayal of how the 19thcentury East Coast American upper class lived. The
title is an ironic comment on the polished outward
manners of New York society when compared to its
inward machinations.

Waldorf Senior Center Afternoon Book Club meets
on the first Wednesday of every month from 1:00
- 2:00 pm, at the P.D. Brown Library, 50 Village
Street, Waldorf, MD 20602. Call 301-638-4420 for
more information.
August 6: The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks. Ira
Levinson is in trouble. Ninety-one
years old and stranded and injured
after a car crash, he struggles to
retain consciousness until a blurry
image materializes beside him: his
beloved wife Ruth, who passed away
nine years ago. A few miles away,
at a local bull-riding event, a Wake
Forest College senior's life is about to
change. Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia
Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears
little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has
encountered at school. Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke.
Two couples who have little in common, and who are
separated by years and experience. Yet their lives
will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding
us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield
extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death,
to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

Richard R. Clark Senior Center Book Discussion
Group will meet at 1:00 pm on the first Thursday
of every month. Anyone interested in joining the
group can call 301-934-9001 or email Natasha Miller
at [email protected] for more information.
The Center is located at 1210 Charles Street, La Plata,

August 7: The Count of Monte Cristo
by Alexandre Dumas. Set against
the turbulent years of the Napoleonic
era, Alexandre Dumas's thrilling
adventure story is one of the most
widely read romantic novels of all
time. In it the dashing young hero,
Edmond Dantès, is betrayed by his
enemies and thrown into a secret
dungeon in the Chateau d'If--doomed to spend his life
in a dank prison cell. The story of his long, intolerable
years in captivity, his miraculous escape, and his
carefully wrought revenge creates a dramatic tale of
mystery and intrigue and paints a vision of France--a
dazzling, dueling, exuberant France--that has become
immortal.
La Plata Book Discussion Group meets at 7:00 pm
on the second Thursday of every month. To join
call 301-934-9001 or email [email protected]
for more information. The Library is located at 2
Garrett Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646.
August 14: Defending Jacob by
Willian Landay. Andy Barber has
been a well-respected assistant
district attorney in his suburban
Massachusetts county for more
than twenty years. But when his
fourteen-year-old son, Jacob, is
charged with the murder of a fellow
student, the entire community is
shattered. Award-winning author
William Landay has written the consummate novel of
an embattled family in crisis--a suspenseful, characterdriven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt,
betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can
spin out of control.
Waldorf West Summer Adult Book Club
Meets on Tuesdays, from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Preregistration at www.ccplonline.org is required by
the evening before the discussion. The Library
is located at 10405 O'Donnell Place, Waldorf. For
more information, call 301-645-1395.
August 19: A Short History of Nearly
Everything by Bill Bryson. Taking as
territory everything from the Big Bang
to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks
to understand how we got from there
being nothing at all to there being us.
A Short History of Nearly Everything
is the record of this quest, and it is a
sometimes profound, sometimes funny,
and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure
in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson
can render it. Science has never been more involving or
entertaining.
Indian Head Senior Center Book Discussion Group
meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month
from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm. Contact Lena Cox at 301375-7375 or email [email protected] for more
information. The Senior Center is located at 100
Cornwallis Square, Indian Head, MD 20640.
August 27: Necessary Lies by Diane
Chamberlain. After losing her
parents, fifteen-year-old Ivy Hart
is left to care for her grandmother,
older sister and nephew as tenants
on a small tobacco farm. As she
struggles with her grandmother’s
aging, her sister’s mental illness and
her own epilepsy, she realizes they might need more
than she can give. Set in rural Grace County, North
Carolina in a time of state-mandated sterilizations and
racial tension, Necessary Lies tells the story of these
two young women, seemingly worlds apart, but both
haunted by tragedy. Jane and Ivy are thrown together
and must ask themselves: how can you know what
you believe is right, when everyone is telling you it’s
wrong?
