Papa Wemba, also known as the “King of Rhumba Rock,” is one of Africa’s most
flamboyant and cosmopolitan musicians. He broke out of his native Democratic
Republic of Congo to become one of the most internationally successful world music

such as Zaïko Langa Langa, Isifi Lokole, and Yoka Lokole,Wemba reached superstar
status there with his band Viva La Musica. After some time in Europe,Wemba set his
sights on international acclaim, and achieved it with the group Molokai International.
Still singing in his native tongue, he headlined Peter Gabriel’s World of Music and
Dance (WOMAD) tour and secured a global audience.
Papa Wemba who has a project for the youth of his country, to know the musical
framing of the young talents, returned more and more to Kinshasa. It is in this
perspective that he organized in 1999 the festival “Fula ngenge” putting in evidence
of the new talents around the artist. Pursuing this goal, Papa Wemba concentrated all
his energy in 2002 to the stage of the Martyrs in Kinshasa owing more than 100.000
people.
Creator of a fashion and music, Papa Wemba participated extensively in to introduce
the Afro pop in the western charts. But for him, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the youth, for more than thirty
years follows step-by-step the tribulations of the sapper of the Kasaï.

twist. He has been able to maintain close ties to his traditional Gogo roots, while creating a new and exciting energy
that is contagious to anyone who hears it. While artists in Tanzania are adopting international styles such as hip-hop,
reggae and r’n’b, Msafiri has built a sound that no one is able to mimic. Singing in both Swahili and his native Gogo
language, the music is truly based in the environment and the people that shaped its authors, who aim to share
experiences with their fellow Tanzanians and with the world. Even for those who do not understand the
language, the passion and energy are deeply universal.
