BOARD MEMBERS
2013-2014 was a year of growth and change for United Way of Denton County. Through the generosity of nearly 10,000
donors, United Way of Denton County and our community partners launched new and innovative collective impact efforts. Our
move to our new office space at 1314 Teasley Lane in Denton allowed for continued expansion of university internships in ways
that greatly increased our impact across the communities of Denton County. Our fundraising efforts grew to over $2.2 million and
we collectively improved the lives of 65,218 of our neighbors, co-workers, and friends in Denton County.
Through your support, United Way of Denton County’s Community Investment volunteers recommended an overall increase
of 16% to our 20 Partner Agencies to advance the invaluable work they do to help victims and marginalized people among us. For
a second year in a row, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program returned more than $1,000,000 to the pockets of our
working poor in Denton County while saving these tax payers an estimated $147,000 in preparation fees. Together we launched
Mentor Denton, a collective impact effort to match volunteer mentors with at-risk children through the help of local non-profits,
school districts, public and private partners.
Findings in our Community Needs Assessment reports continued to guide our development of programs and services to
meet gaps in our community. In 2013, we published the organization’s first Mental Health Needs Assessment report which found
that mental health services in Denton County is one of our greatest needs. In response, a private donor committed funding to
form our Denton County Citizen’s Council on Mental Health focused on raising community awareness of mental health issues,
advocating for the development of widely available services for those in need and mobilizing increased funding for mental health
services in Denton County.
The resources we mobilize to help our neighbors need to grow along with our community. Over 104,000 of our neighbors
are “food-insecure.” 1 in 3 (over 35,000) of our children are at-risk of dropping out of school. Nearly half of our community will
experience mental health crisis in their lifetime.
When we LIVE UNITED, we come together as a community and mobilize community resources around the areas of EDUCATION, INCOME, and HEALTH. United Way of Denton County is the backbone organization behind collaborative efforts in our community that improve lives across Denton County.
On behalf of our board of directors, lifetime members, and staff, thank you for your support and commitment to improving
lives in Denton County.

In August 2013, volunteers and staff published the results of a Mental Health
Community Needs Assessment. In response to these shocking findings, local
community leaders Janet & Joe Mulroy dedicated a $50,000 donation over
two years to fund the creation of the Denton County Citizen’s Council on
Mental Health to significantly increase mental health access, services, and
cohesive and complete treatments in Denton County.

“When you build up a person,
you build up a community.”
According to our Community Needs Assessment, across Denton
ISD over 10,000 children are at risk of dropping out of school.
United Way of Denton County is the backbone organization
behind Mentor Denton, a community collaboration to promote
volunteerism through local non-profits. Together with our partner agencies,
Denton ISD, the City of Denton and other community partners, our goal is to
help every at-risk student stay on track to graduate into a career or college.

Bank On Denton County is dedicated to helping local
families in four communities keep more of their hardearned money. We do so through financial education
programs and initiatives to reduce community demand for check cashing,
payday loans and other costly short-term alternative financial services.

Advancing Education, Income and Health
SANGER ISD IMPACT GRANT
Economically disadvanaged students in Sanger have few
places to turn for help. With the support of United Way
of Denton County community impact funding, Sanger ISD
provides these children in need with school supplies, new
clothes and food for their families on the weekend.
DENTON ISD SCOUT TROOPS
Schools in low-income neighborhoods have the fewest
resources to spare, and the most barriers to helping their
students graduate and become productive, responsible
members of society. Through community impact funding
from United Way of Denton County, Boy Scouts of America
- Longhorn Council is sponsoring new scout troops at five
schools in Denton ISD to help students stay on track to
graduate.
INFORMATION & REFERRAL
Help is just a phone-call away for those in need in our
community. United Way of Denton County maintains a
Community Services Directory for local service providers.
This information to update Denton County information for
the Texas 2-1-1 Database, a state-wide information and
referral hotline. In addition, we provide a local hotline
maintained by staff and volunteers who can find our
community the help we need.
How we improved lives in our community
FREE FLU VACCINATIONS
During flu season, children and seniors are at heightened
risk of contracting the virus. In fall 2013, United Way of
Denton County intern Jagruti Rami worked with Texas
Health Presbyterian Hospital of Denton to provide nearly
800 flu vaccinations to our community free of charge
through three public vaccination drives.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN COALITION
According to our updated Community Needs Assessment,
over 8,200 children under the age of 5 live in poverty
in Denton County. Our Pre-K Coalition collaborates and
forms partnerships between community members and
organizations to help these children enter school ready to
learn and on par with their more fortunate peers.
The 22nd annual National Association of Letter Carriers
“Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive brought together local
mail carriers, United Way of Denton County volunteers,
and Denton residents to raise three week’s worth of food
for the Denton Community Food Center.

PROJECT BLUEPRINT
A strong and attentive volunteer board of directors is the
most important factor safeguarding charitable non-profit
organizations from business malpractice or theft. Through
Project Blueprint board leadership training, experienced
United Way of Denton County volunteers teach local community members how to serve effectively on volunteer
boards, helping local non-profits recruit and retain highly
effective board members.
