Knights of Columbus Honor the Unborn
As we enter into the Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis, we are reminded that every life is
precious to our Creator, and that includes the unborn. We are all called as Catholics to respect and
cherish each and every life, especially in light of what is quickly becoming a “culture of death”. Every
ministry in our church is vital to getting this message out to our parish and the community at large. To
that end, the Knights of Columbus are a visible ministry at St. Magdalen’s. These Catholic gentlemen
with their blue badges are involved in a broad range of parish activities. But what you may not be
aware of is our commitment and dedication to a “culture of life”.
For example, unless you are long-time member of the parish, you might not know that the Knights
were responsible for erecting the Shrine of the Unborn back in 1998. This shrine, just off the main
sidewalk between the rectory and the Church, features a statue of The Virgin Mary holding the infant
Jesus. She is surrounded by a small path of bricks, some etched with the names of families who made
donations to help fund this project; if you look closely, you’ll see that many other bricks are not
engraved. Over the years, some have suggested that we etch these empty bricks with the names of new
donors to fund ongoing shrine maintenance. But this reveals an even lesser known fact about the
shrine: the empty bricks are there by design. Each represents the life of an unborn child lost to
abortion, a continuing reminder that we must keep advocating for a culture of life. And if you follow
the row of nameless bricks, you will notice they form the shape of the rosary around our Blessed Mother, a reminder of the power of
prayer and supplication to Her for support and guidance.
We are blessed to be part of a Parish community that offers so many opportunities to do so, from the Life Chain silent protest at the
Flemington Circle, to the buses of parishioners we send to Washington D.C. to protest the Roe v. Wade decision. It has been a long
fight and In the past few years we have witnessed a decrease in participation in “Pro-Life” activities. In 2016 we plan to refurbish the
Shrine and re-commit and re-dedicate ourselves to prayer and promoting The Culture of Life. Please join us in these and other
activities that visibly demonstrate our support for life and Proclaim the Name of Our Lord.”

Do you remember your Baptism?
Many of us don’t remember our own baptism experience. We may have pictures, cards or objects given to us of the sacramental
event, but the physical experience is not something most Catholics can speak about. The good news is that we don’t really need the
physical experience to remember our Baptism. What is important to remember are the words we heard in today’s Gospel reading:
“You are my beloved Son, with You I am well pleased.”
Through our baptism we are connected to Christ. Because of this connection we are called to live a life of discipleship, a life that
seeks to understand who Jesus Christ is and to share this with others. But sometimes we forget this and stray away from our
baptism. We find ourselves trying to connect with other things that we believe will be pleasing to ourselves and not pleasing to God.
And sometimes we may struggle with finding our way back to the meaning of our baptism.
God is always patient and waits for us and when we come back to our baptism he again thrusts the Holy Spirit upon us to reawaken
our heart.

I don't know about you, but I can certainly relate to
his words. I find this to be a great book to read in
the morning with my first cup of coffee. I have
really been enjoying the book, have you?

This quote is from Chapter 11 which is actually only
two pages long but very impactful. Who have you
astonished today? I find the word ’astonish’ so
powerful, Jesus certainly astonished a lot of people.

Please Note:
In an effort to prayerfully reflect on Pope Francis’
message regarding the Family and the Year of
Mercy, a prayer booklet entitled “Prayers for
Family and Mercy” will be made available during
Friday Eucharistic Adoration on the sign-up table.
We all work hard in whatever vocation we are called to fulfill. Our
lives have many “burdens”-making ends meet with the salaries
we receive, caring for an elderly parent or sick child, issues or
challenges with our health, budgeting for children’s college
experiences, on and on. It is the work of our days. Jesus tells us
to come to Him to receive rest for our weariness, the weariness
of day-to-day routines and demands.
Jesus asks us to “yoke” ourselves to Him and learn from His way
of walking through life. He has a quiet nature and a deep respect
for each of us as God our Father’s very beloved children. One
definition of yoke is a bond that keeps people together. Jesus
tells us that to be yoked to Him will produce rest in our lives. A
yoke supports. It joins two [animals] to share the workload. Just
think about it. Who better to be united to than Our Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ?
When you come into the chapel for Eucharistic Adoration it is like
an oasis of peace and quiet in our very busy, demanding world
where we can be with Jesus and yoke ourselves to Him. All we
need to do is come and sit with Him, All-Powerful, all good,
Jesus, and allow Him to care for us, love us, and transform our
hearts. It’s that easy. Listen:

Eucharistic Adoration is available at St. Magdalen de Pazzi
Church EVERY Friday beginning after the
9 am Mass and concluding with Benediction
at 7:30 pm in the chapel.
MONTHLY Overnight Adoration is each first Friday of the month.
Adoration will begin on Friday after the 9 am Mass. Benediction
is at 7:30 pm. Adoration will continue throughout the night until
7:50 am Saturday morning. Mass will follow at 8:00 am.

FREE THROW COMPETITION
Knights of Columbus, Jubilee Council 3294
The Knights of Columbus are again proud to sponsor their annual basketball free throw competition for
2016 on Sunday, January 24, 2016.
This event will be held at the St Magdalen de Pazzi Parish Center in Flemington, NJ. Registration will be
from 1:00 to 1:30 pm. The competition will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. The competition is open for all
boys and girls between the ages of 9 to 14 as of January 1, 2016. Participants compete in separate
categories by age and gender.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through
local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C headquarters
based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls will compete in their respective age and
gender divisions. Since its beginning in 1972, over 2.5 million youths have participated in the contest.
All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation. Participants are required to furnish
proof of age and written parental consent.
REMEMBER to bring a copy of each participant's birth certificate, it is required in order to compete.

person will receive a Women’s Burberry watch also
valued at $750. Tickets will go on sale starting this
weekend at $10 each, and can be obtained from sales in
the Narthex or from Knights of Columbus members. The
proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to fund the
Knights charitable activities within our Church and our

Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He
explains to them that any person who follows God’s will is
acceptable to God, regardless of nationality.

John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more
powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the
Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John
and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a
