Mahiet, Saint Louis Feeding the Poor, illustration in Vie et Miracles de Louis IX by Guillaume de Saint-Pathus (1330-40)
Louis (+1277) was king of France, known for his charity, justice, and zeal for the faith. We keep his feast on August 25.
As the days of summer slowly begin to wind down, there are several upcoming events I’d like
to highlight:
• Next Sunday, August 28, we will have an opportunity to honor and thank Fr. Peter and
Msgr. Bayani for their service to St. John’s at a reception in McCaffrey Hall, following the
12:00pm Mass. Everyone is most welcome.
• Our parish picnic will be on Monday, September 5 (Labor Day) at Myron Urbanski Memorial Park on Craigville Road. The day begins at 11:00am, and includes food and drink, entertainment, and games for the children. You may RSVP after Mass, or by sending an email
to [email protected], with your name and the number attending. While there’s no cost
for the picnic, we’d like to get as accurate a count as possible for planning purposes.
• The students and faculty of St. John School will gather for a Mass of the Holy Spirit on

Capuchin Youth Leadership Training, August 26-28,
2016: CYFM has been providing teen leadership training for
over 37 years. Even teens that don’t consider themselves
leaders benefit from the authenticity and skill-training that
we offer. The Leadership modules include the practical:
effective communication, understanding group dynamics
and facilitating groups, developing and delivering effective
presentations, enhancing self-esteem, and time management;
as well as how to combine all those skills for utilization in
Evangelization as authentic Christian leaders. Through the
skills they acquire and perfect during the training teens
convert themselves, their parishes, their schools, and their
families. They are prepared and transformed into the people
that God is calling them to be! Fee $115.00 per person
includes lodging, meals, and materials; application and
non-refundable $60.00 deposit due by 8/23/16. GIFT

Thursday, September 15 at 9:00am in the
church. There’s no better way to begin
the new school year than by gathering before the altar and asking God’s blessing on
our school and community.
On Sunday, September 18, our catechists
will gather at the 10:00am Mass for the
traditional “Catechetical Sunday” blessing.

Some 120 of our children enjoyed a week of
faith, fun and friends at last month’s Vacation
Bible Camp. There are many, many people
who devoted countless hours to preparing
for and working during VBC. Thanks to the
adults who assisted: Debbie DeRosa, Lynn
Hunter, Mrs. Larocco, Alice Scanlon, Rick
and Ann Sloat, Betty Smith, Kathy Valerio,
Sharon and Rich Van Sickle, and Debbie Wellington.
Our teens and young volunteers were equally
indispensable: Katie Biagi, Kevin Bowen,
Megan Bowen, Tiffany Calpo, Sean Curtin,
Mary Dawson, Daniel DeRosa, Eve Doyle,
Spencer Doyle, Chloe Fein, Trish Ferguson,
Ethan Garcia, Nicole Garcia, Meghan Geissler, Alexis Gray, Ariana Gray, Sierra Green,
Maria Grzelak, Clare Heppes, Madeline Kelly,
Maggie Larsen, Elena Malinchak, Julia Malinchak, Victoria Martinez, Gabriella Narcise,
Gino Narcise, Elijah Paneto, Joshua Paneto,
Nicholas Paneto, Ysa Paneto, Andrea Pepe,
Veronica Schmidt, Ashlyn Smith, McKenna
Smith, Rosemary Smith, Sharon Spindler,
Jayne Sullivan, Julia Sullivan, Shannon
Toohey, Samantha Torres, David Valentin,
Isabella Van Cott, Emily Whitby, Jenna Whitby, and Christina Zick. I should note, too,
that two of our graduating seniors, Katie
Biagi and Julia Sullivan, were honored for
their many years of faithful service to VBC.
(If I’ve inadvertently left anyone’s name out,
please let me know.)
None of this would come to fruition without
the drive and seemingly inexhaustible energy
of Debby Sheehan. She would be the first to
say that this is all the Holy Spirit’s work –
which is most certainly true – but so much
more good can come when we put ourselves
completely at the Spirit’s disposal. I am personally grateful to her and to all of our volunteers for a week filled with joy, laughter,
and many graces!

The work on the front of the church is nearing completion. We are awaiting the finishing
of some stonework, the wiring of the lights,
and the installation of permanent handrails.
There are also some stones that need to be
reset. I greatly appreciate everyone’s patience, and hope that this is a fitting complement to our church.
You’ve no doubt noticed that the large tree in
front of the church had to be taken down.
Its root system had already started to buckle
the old sidewalk, as well as strangle the Japanese maple that was near the Garr Institute
cross. Our plan is to have the stump ground
down (as well as the stumps still left from
past trees), and then plant new trees, hopefully in the fall. There was also a tree, recently
deceased, which was removed from behind
the carport.
Faithfully your priest,
Fr. George Hafemann

BIBLE BASICS 28: THE LETTERS OF SAINT PAUL, PART I
Fr. Peter Heasley
The theology of Saint Paul has deeply shaped Christianity from the very beginning. He writes no gospel,
but he has “his gospel”; he writes no systematic treatise on theology, but we continue to read his letters nearly
every Sunday. Over the course of three missionary journeys, Paul writes thirteen letters addressed to those whom
he has already visited, as well as to those whom he knows only by reputation (e.g., Romans). These letters have an
“ad hoc” feeling to them – that is, Paul does address specific situations in the local churches. However, Paul uses
each of these situations to expound on larger issues of Christian theology, such as Christology (the study of Jesus
Christ), pneumatology (the study of the Holy Spirit) ecclesiology (the study
THE NEW TESTAMENT
of the Church), moral theology, and perhaps most uniquely for Paul, our
Synoptic Gospels
relationship to the Trinity in grace. They are “personal” letters that address
Johannine Corpus
larger issues, for which the Greek and Roman world provides a ready
Pauline Epistles
template.
PAULINE EPISTLES I—II Thessalonians
I—II Timothy
Romans
Titus
I—II Corinthians
Philemon
Galatians
Hebrews
Ephesians
Philippians
Colossians
Speaking and letter writing in classical antiquity conforms to
the rules of rhetoric, and Paul adheres to these forms. A public
address or a letter has a specific form, with constituent parts, not all
of which need be present. Indeed, expanding one of these parts or
leaving one out gives emphasis to a particular aspect of the message.
For instance, Paul leaves out of Galatians a Thanksgiving, in order
precisely to express his anger at those who have reverted to the old
Judaic customs. Following are the parts of a classical letter, with a
brief explanation:
Address: indicates the Sender, Recipients, and a formal greeting. Often Paul includes his associates as co-senders
(like Silvanus, Sosthenes, and Timothy).
Body, composed of:
Exordium: an introduction, with a Thanksgiving/Captatio Benevolentiae, in which the author seeks the good
favor of the recipients.
Narratio: in which the author traces his shared history with the recipient and the particular situation in
which they find themselves.
Digressio: a break in attention, especially if it is a long letter.
Propositio: the thesis statement of the letter. There may be several such thesis statements in support of a
larger thesis, and several corresponding Confirmatio.
Confirmatio: also known as probatio/argumentatio, it is the main body of argument
Peroratio: a recapitulation of what has been said, often with implications for moral behavior.
Conclusion:
a Final Blessing, Greetings, a Peace Wish, and Postscript.
One great difficulty in outlining the letters is that Paul, however well trained in Greek rhetoric, is also a
well-trained Jewish Pharisee. Paul weaves into these Greek-language letters the specific forms of Semitic rhetoric,
which sometimes directly contradict the Greek form. This is especially so with the concentric pattern, in which a
trained reader of the Hebrew bible will put the most important point he is trying to make right in the center of a
body of text. The Greek form, instead, sees the center as least important, putting thesis and conclusion at
beginning and end. Next week, we will see how Paul puts this together in one of his shorter letters.
