KLCOA and the Art on the Dock exhibitors are pleased to be
making a contribution to support the Artists in the Schools program
Artists
in the Schools
Haliburton County
Arts and culture play a significant role in the life
of our community but many children living in
Haliburton County have limited access to these
experiences. Approximately 40% of the children
attending our elementary schools live in lowerincome households. Lack of family resources
limits their access to extra-curricular activities.
We believe that the best way to make sure that all
children have equal access to these experiences
is through the schools. Each year the Artists-in
the-Schools program strives to reach 1/4 of the
children in grades 1 to 8. Over a span of 3-4 years
the program reaches every elementary school
child in the County schools. Each year the Arts
Council~ Haliburton Highlands raises funds from
a wide variety of sources to deliver the Artists in
the School program.
Since 2004, the Arts Council ~ Haliburton
Highlands has been providing opportunities for
children in Haliburton County elementary schools
to learn from artists who live in their community.
It costs approximately $10.00 per student per
session. Sponsorship for one class for 4 sessions
is $1000.00.
We invite you to help bring art experiences
to children in our community.
The Artists-in-the-Schools program provides:
• Arts experiences for children and teachers with
local professional artists in the classroom
• Curriculum links between the arts and other
school subjects
• Opportunities for children to learn about
various careers in the arts and creative
businesses
• Connections between the community and its
schools
Each class involved in the program participates in
four 100 minute sessions with various artists. The
classroom teacher matches the artists and their
projects to their students’ interests as well as the
curriculum.

1 Shirlee Weeks – Machine Quilting

Shirlee has quilted for over 30 years and since retiring to Kennisis 6 years ago, has started machine
quilting. She will be showing mostly small quilted items such as bags, baby quilts, wall hangings,
table runners and place mats.

Judy started quilting in 1999 after retiring from Bell. Fabric and colours have always been a
fascination for her – the combinations are endless. After many classes, courses, techniques and
applications she is still learning and enjoying every minute of it. Over the years, she has been
commissioned to make bed quilts, which are both challenging and rewarding.

Marleen is a semi–retired teacher and vice–principal who has been surrounded by the influences
of art from a young age and has been a member of the Kennisis Lake community for 40 years.
She has had work displayed and sold at the Gordon Harrison Gallery in Ottawa. Marleen finds
inspiration from the Haliburton landscape, creating oil paintings which celebrate the colours of the
Kennisis area. She uses broad, relaxed brush strokes of intense colour to create impressionistic–
realistic paintings.

An advertising man for many years, Wilf eventually turned to the subtle art of watercolour
painting – where he captures the nuances of Mother Nature in vivid colours. His work has won
many awards including a recent top award from the American Watercolour Society, and appears
in many corporate collections. He also delves into whimsical fantasy for his children’s books and
he is the author/illustrator of several books on the Province of Ontario. He offers fully framed
work and work that is matted
– in many sizes. He is a
member of several art clubs
and a member of The
Canadian Society of Painters
in Watercolour, The Toronto

John Middleton – Pottery 4

2301 Watts Rd – exhibiting at the garage level.
On the north side of the only island on Little Kennisis (approach from the east to avoid the rocks
between the island and shore on the left side). Blue boat awning. Docking for 3 boats – up two
flights of stairs. Parking for 4 cars.
John is an experienced hobbyist who has taken
multiple pottery, Raku and glaze workshops at
the Haliburton School of the Arts for over 20
years and has a broad range of experience with
various pottery techniques. He explores kiln
firing processes from low–fire Raku to high-fire
crystalline glazes at his studio on Little Kennisis.
John predominantly works in stoneware and
porcelain. He will be offering a variety of clay
platters, trays, bowls and vases, both functional
and decorative, and some pieces finished in
crystalline glaze which is reminiscent of ice
crystals. John and his family have been on Little
Kennisis since 1971 and permanent residents
for the past 5 years.

at garage at top of driveway. By road, 1 km in on Watts Rd (second entrance across bridge). Lot is at
bottom of first major hill if coming from west. Sign marked with an “Rx”. Parking for 4 cars.
LOCATION
Lot 1052 Platinum Bay Road – exhibiting on shore in front of the cottage on the last point eastbound
on the north shore before the bridge to Little Kennisis Lake. Dock can only accommodate 2 boats. Not
suitable parking for cars. There is a small incline from dock to shore and a few stairs to the deck and
into the cottage should it be raining.
Kyle spent his summers growing up on the lake, tinkering in the garage and learning the basics
of woodworking from his father. After graduating in Biology from Wilfrid Laurier University,
he travelled the world and worked on cruise ships for several years. He now works as a Fitness
Consultant and is logging hours in the air to earn his Private Pilot’s License. In addition to relaxing,
working, playing and entertaining at the lake, he also enjoys creating. He transforms locally–
sourced wood into unique character pieces that are either functional or completely decorative. The
wood is chosen for its unique characteristics: burls, spalting, checks, curly or birdseye grain, insect
bore holes, to name a few. Woodworking techniques vary; usually they are turned on a lathe,
carved, or made from dimensional lumber. The finished piece is always a conversation starter
in any home or cottage. He also
welcomes working with clients on
custom pieces beginning with the
design process through selecting
raw material to the final product.
Kyle will be demonstrating a variety
of woodworking techniques.
Before starting to teach in 1970, Maurice worked for 15 years as an Artist/Designer/Art Director.
He has now retired after teaching art for 30 years; 20 years as Head, Visual Arts at Lester B. Pearson
Collegiate in Scarborough, ON. He is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in
Watercolour and the Ontario Society of Artists. Maurice’s love of the outdoors and his concerns
for the environment are manifested in his watercolour landscapes. He has traveled extensively
and painted across Canada, in Europe, the Caribbean and the U.S. He has juried, demonstrated
and taught for many groups including the Haliburton School of the Arts, the Scarborough Art
Guild, the Toronto Watercolour Society and many more. He has designed sets for the North
Toronto Players. He has had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows.
His commissioned portraits and watercolours hang in public and private collections in Canada and

Nature and Ontario’s rural heritage are big influences in the watercolour art of Ian Ball. Originally
from Uxbridge, ON, and a child of the ‘60’s, Ian has been going “up north” for many years to the
family cottage on Kennisis Lake, enjoying the
changing light and the flora and fauna of all
four seasons, and capturing wilderness scenes
and the pastoral allure of historical churches
and farm buildings. His watercolours have
been exhibited in many central Ontario art
shows and he is on the 2015 Victoria County
Studio Tour. He offers watercolour lessons from
his studio/gallery in Oakwood, ON. He will be
exhibiting painting in watercolour.

5995 Kennisis Lake Rd. Art will be exhibited at two levels – at the dock and by the road (in the garage
if it rains) to make it easy to view whether arriving by boat or by car.
Ray earned his B.A. and M.A. at the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. at Yale. He was a professor
in the Department of French at the University of Waterloo. Painting has been his hobby since
childhood, and in retirement has become his principal interest. He has studied with Peter Etril
Snyder, Devona Paquette, Jack Reid and V. Jane Gordon. He has had shows at the Agnes Jamieson
Gallery and Waterloo Community Arts Centre and has participated in juried shows of the COAA.
Memberships have included the Central Ontario Art Association, Ontario Plein Air Society and
the Haliburton Arts Council. Recently he has become known for his reproduction of the Bayeux
Tapestry which was used in the
recent film, “The Monuments
Men”. He spends each summer at
his cottage on Kennisis, where his
ancestors were pioneers.

Lake Rd). Up the hill and just after a sharp right
turn from the first entrance to Pine Point Rd –
look for a homemade loon sign saying Turchet.
Parking in the long driveway (tricky) or the
neighbour’s pull-out. Large blue cottage right
at the water behind Nora’s Island. Docking for 3
vessels. Exhibiting on large dockside deck, two
short sets of stairs from driveway entrance.
Shirley began drawing and painting after
retirement from high school teaching and
has found it a new passion. She is a member
of the Schoolhouse Group of Artists and the
Markham Group of Artists and sells her work
through their juried and open events. She
likes to work in acrylic and mixed media with
texture to express the feeling of a scene or
experience, often from her travels, abstracting
for colour and design, using texture and
impasto and often incorporating copies of
photo images. She likes larger formats.

from the lake. From the road, first cottage after the 3rd bridge on the way to the dam. Lots of dock

Michael calls himself “The Accidental Photographer” because he relies primarily on intuition in his
work. Retired after 30 years of film editing, he brings a discerning eye to his work. His approach
is impressionistic – derived from feelings evoked in the moment. Having no preconceived design
when taking a shot, he is instead captured by a mood – it is this that moves him to press the
shutter. He imagines pictures with the eye of a painter, so his intention is to transmit the feeling
captured by the lens to the photo’s canvas. He has captured photos all around the world, but it
is Kennisis Lake that continues to capture his heart. Award–winning photographs – framed and
unframed – of Kennisis Lake and of people and places around the world will be available. Sizes
range from 6” to 6’ prints and canvasses. Greeting cards and hostess gifts also available.

11 Cathy Whittaker – Moose Run Mosaics

3510 West Shore Rd (near the end). On the point across from Blueberry Island closest to the dam.
There are two docks (one at the front and one at the back of our property) each dock will hold two
boats. Exhibiting on the front dock and nearby. Lots of parking – be careful on driveway, watch for
cars on the hill, honk horn when entering and exiting.
After taking many art courses of the past 30 years at the Haliburton School of the Arts and
elsewhere, Cathy became hooked on the art of mosaics several years ago as her preferred art
form. Cathy is looking forward to devoting more time to this passion as she will be moving to
the lake permanently in the
Spring of 2015. Cathy works
mostly with glass, ceramic
tile and mixed materials and
focuses her projects on a
nature theme by designing
her mosaics mainly on trays,
tables, chairs and signage. Her
art is meant to be fun, useful
and cottage kitschy.
Lea Bartlett – Treehouse Soaps 12
LOCATION
1070 Harrier Rd – 12 1/2 kms along West Shore Road. Harrier is the last spur road off West Shore
before the dam. On the lake, by the entrance to Dead Horse Bay behind Blueberry Island.
Three years ago, Lea researched soap
making and made her first batch
of Essentials Soap – and realized
how much she enjoyed this creative
outlet. She now has over 30 different
types of long-lasting bar soaps with
luxurious lather that will clean and
moisturize your skin. All bar soaps
are handcrafted on Kennisis Lake.
Ingredients are purchased as locally
as possible and are made in small
batches using rich blends of oils such
as coconut, olive, sweet almond,
avocado and hemp. Shea and cocoa
butters, local honey and botanicals
from the garden are also used. There
are vegan soaps and unscented
soaps for babies and those with
sensitivities. Others are scented with
essential oils and some fragrance
oils. Four of the soaps are made
with beer from our local Haliburton
microbreweries. And there’s even dog
soap for our furry friends! Handmade
wood and pottery soap dishes also
available.

Amy Bartlett Gibson – Silkscreen and intaglio prints
Daughter to Lea Bartlett, Amy has been cottaging on the lake for the past 20 years. She is a
teacher, art instructor, mom and outdoor enthusiast. Working with silkscreen and intaglio etching
on both fabric and paper, themes of motherhood, nature and family emerge in her work.
13 Madeleine Gross – Mixed Media Painting on Photographs

3026 West Shore Drive – exhibiting on the cottage deck. Lots of parking
Madeleine is an artist/photographer who will graduate in April 2015 with a BFA from OCAD
University. Her medium is mixed media, acrylic paint on photographic print. Her work showcases
the exploration of the two mediums colliding. She intuitively uses paint strokes that evoke her
feelings when thinking of her experience in the setting. The paint adds an element of joy with
bright colours and gestural abstraction. Madeleine draws most of her inspiration from Modern
Art, Abstract Expressionism and Fashion, as she is also a fashion photographer. Some of her clients

Hut across from Two Loon Island. Plenty of parking and docking space.
Melissa has taken pottery classes for 4 years. She will be offering platters, bowls, sculptures and
decorative pieces, often incorporating natural elements and many with a Canadian theme.

LOCATION
2718 Wilkinson Road (Janis Parker is hosting Tracey at Boomstick Lodge) at the very end of the South
Shore. Look for a float plane and wind sock on the raft.
LOCATION
Access only by Boat to Island 11, which is the larger island south east of the island with a lighthouse. Docking for 3 boats at a time. Mainland parking is available at 2280 Wilkinson.
Tracey is a multi-form artist who has had several solo
shows and exhibited her paintings and metal sculpture
in a variety of galleries, in the Haliburton, Bancroft
and Algonquin areas. She has participated in the
Haliburton County and Highlands East Studio Tours
in a number of past years. She has been involved in
a number of art initiatives in the area, including the
Art Hive and the Highlands East Cultural Association.
When working with steel, each piece is heated in
the forge and hammered to the desired shape. She
leaves raw steel with a clear coat and loves the way
the light hits the raw edges. Her acrylic paintings are
non-representational explorations of herself, using no
reference material other than intuition.
Jeff Gardner is a fine art printer and life-long photographer, strongly influenced by the Canadian
landscape. He is an accomplished professional digital editor and technical trainer. Passionate
about nature, he is inspired by the character of the land; often viewed by canoe. The Haliburton
Highlands, Georgian Bay and the hills of Northumberland Ontario are his palette. By combining
colour and texture, he creates an impression beyond the photograph. He considers it a success if
asked – is it a photograph or a painting?

Jeanette is a nurse who paints weekly
with friends for recreation and stress

Shelley’s transparent watercolours, acrylics and monoprints are
truly a celebration of life. They capture the beauty and mystery
of our natural environment. Subjects vary from Haliburton
landscapes to still–life to century architecture, but always a sense
of harmony evolves from the artist’s profound affinity to nature.
Shelley is a popular watercolour and acrylic instructor throughout
Durham Region and for the past 7 seasons has taught watercolour
and acrylic classes at the Haliburton School of the Arts. She was
a drawing and painting major
and an honour graduate of
OCAD in 2004 and is a silver level
signature member of the Toronto
Watercolour Society. She is an
elected Member of the Society of
Canadian Artists. A large selection
of paintings, giclee prints and
cards will be available, featuring the local landscape ranging from
the traditional to abstracted interpretations of our environment.

GUEST ARTIST Lea Harper
Lea is an award–winning poet and Juno-nominated songwriter, the
author of All That Saves Us and Shadow Crossing (Black Moss Press).
She has released four recordings including Lake of Many Winds, a
spoken word CD with soundscapes – a tribute to Kennisis Lake,
her permanent residence since 2001. These poems blend personal
reflection with local history – from the first settlers to the last
Aboriginal presence and the influx of cottagers in the 1950s. Lake of
Many Winds is a meditation on our relationship to water, to nature
and to ourselves – a fluid and compelling narrative underscored by
water, wind and fire, flute, fiddle, piano, hand drum and chant – a
celebration of the natural world and its enduring magic.

Art is an important hobby for the Pike family, with many family members having taken courses
at the Haliburton School of the Arts. On display will be portraits, landscapes, abstracts in acrylics
and oils on various sizes of canvas, along with art creations on wood boards made with cement
and wheat and painted. Also available will be hand-made candles in various scents, sizes and
containers and screen-printed items.
