In this, the first Christian Audiobooks Digest, we aim to
provide information and resources on a growing area
of audiobook publishing, as well as to introduce audiobooks to those who may be new to them.
In the last five years, a surge of audio publishing has
made audiobooks available by many popular authors.
Many important Christian texts and writings by inspiring
teachers and theologians have been
brought to the audio format. Topics
as broad as discipline, prayer, history,
relationships, and Bible study are well
represented in audiobooks. And in
fiction, Christian audiobook publishers offer suspense, historical fiction,
contemporary comedy, and romance.
To celebrate this growth, we offer an interview with
William P. Young, three lists of audiobooks appealing to
a wide range of interests, a listener profile (a feature in
every issue of AudioFile magazine), and a highlight on
narrator Grover Gardner, who brings exceptional narrative
skills and a keen understanding of the texts and concepts
he presents to listeners (see page 12). And don’t miss
the directory of Christian publishers and other resources.
Open your ears to the spoken word, and you’ll quickly
discover the enthusiasm we have for audiobooks. After
you explore with us here, come to the AudioFile Web site,
www.audiofilemagazine.com, to find out much more
about audiobook resources and offerings.

William P. Young
William Paul Young admits he hears voices. As he wrote
The Shack, as a gift to his family, he heard the voices of Papa,
Sarayu, and Jesus. When it came to creating the audiobook, he and
his partners again heard voices. Veteran audiobook narrator Roger
Mueller was not the first, but he was certainly the last. “Roger has an
excellent ability to create multiple characters and differentiate the
voices,” comments Young.
And how did “Papa” sound? How did Roger Mueller take on God
as channeled through an African-American woman? Young explains
that only a hint of an accent was required or needed. Mueller’s voice
for Papa was scaled back, so it never became a caricature, and Papa’s
deep yearning for relationship rings true.
Perhaps this appreciation of oral tradition grew out of Young’s
missionary childhood. His experience as an adult may also play a part:
“I was a disc jockey for four years, doing country and western, rock and
roll, even the newscasts,” he recalls. “It’s always fun to be behind a
microphone.” He shares his own “Story Behind The Shack” as part of
the audio production. He’s also an audiobook fan, enjoying everything
from science fiction and mysteries to physics and cosmology.
The Shack may especially resonate as an audiobook. “Some people
are auditory learners,” notes Young. For those, Roger Mueller’s
evocative performance will be the gateway to the phenomenon that
has already enthralled and enlightened millions. —Ellen Myrick
THE SHACK
William P. Young
Read by Roger Mueller
Mac is a grief-stricken father in mid-life about to
have an extraordinary experience with God. His
great sadness began four years ago on a weekend
camping trip, when his 6-year-old daughter,
Missy, was murdered. What he couldn’t know then, but is about to learn,
was God’s purpose for Missy’s death. Roger Mueller’s clear, gentle voice
characterizes Mac’s family with high-spirited joy and laughter. His
portrayal of Missy’s animated excitement makes her especially believable. His polished performance of grief-stricken Mac brings tears. With
empathy and sensitivity, Mueller captures the mysterious voices of those
who have invited him to the now abandoned, yet transformed, cabin in
the wilderness. This compelling fantasy explores themes of love, loss,
and blame. G.D.W. 2009 Audies Finalist

DECEPTION
Randy Alcorn
Read by Roger Mueller
Narrator Roger Mueller is a solid fit to portray
Detective Ollie Chandler’s witty cynicism,
modeled after Sam Spade, Chandler’s
favorite movie character. Mueller uses subtle
irony and humor when Police Chief Lennox
makes a political agreement with the Oregon
Tribune to assign reporter Clarence Abernathy to his department’s next
homicide investigation. After a university professor is murdered,
Mueller’s fully voiced characterizations, tight pacing, and energetic vocal
manipulations deliver an authentic police procedural that will keep listeners guessing. Mueller captures the rising tension between detective
and reporter with gruff, playful exchanges and underlying harsh tones.
Mueller’s vocal talent lends itself to first-person narration, clever dialogue, and multiple plot twists to create a well-narrated mystery. G.D.W.

SKIN
Ted Dekker
Read by Adam Verner
Three tornadoes have wiped the town of
Summerville off the map—or have they?
Narrator Adam Verner delivers this trippy
tale of nerve-jangling suspense. Bestselling
author Ted Dekker creates a psychedelic
world in which nothing is as it seems. When
recovering cult member Wendy Davidson happens upon an accident,
it kicks off a juggernaut of violence that thrusts her and four perfect
strangers into a puzzle palace, where they’re subjected to torturous
choices by a sadistic killer called “Red.” Listeners will tug at their collars and grip their steering wheels, and families will wonder why Dad
is still sitting in his car in the driveway as Dekker delivers the chills
that inspire a solid performance by Verner. R.O.

Inspired By . . . The Bible Experience
The multimedia audio programs Inspired By . . . New Testament
and Old Testament (available on CD and MP3-CD) feature an
African-American cast of 400, including Blair Underwood (Jesus),
Samuel L. Jackson (Voice of God), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Judas), Forest
Whitaker (Moses), Angela Bassett (Angel), and others, and took two
years to record and produce. The star-powered narration, a full score
and sound effects, and modern-day language make the programs
exceptional and inspiring listening.

THE BIBLE EXPERIENCE: New Testament
Read by Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding, Jr.,
Samuel L. Jackson, et al.
The Bible Experience is just that—an experience—that
bypasses many of the previous Bible recordings with
a full show of music, sound effects, and a dazzling
array of celebrity voices. The producers from Inspired
By Media Group put together a cast of more than 80
African-American actors who deliver a rich, diverse rendering of the
contemporary Today’s New International Version (TNIV) translation
in gospel-meeting style. Listeners are treated to a sort of aural kaleidoscope with layers of voices, sound, and music overlapping and
occasionally colliding. The lavish production pulls out all the stops,
so this is not a Bible recording for purists. If a modern multimedia
production “experience” is what you’re after, enjoy the fine voices and
often dynamic dramatized readings. The “making of” DVD disc is an
entertaining extra. R.F.W. 2007 Audies Winner: Audiobook of the Year

INSPIRED BY . . . THE BIBLE EXPERIENCE:
Old Testament
Read by Angela Bassett, Cuba Gooding, Jr.,
Samuel L. Jackson, et al.
Infusing the Old Testament with a contemporary
feel may seem a daunting task, but this production rises to the challenge using the vocal talents
of over four hundred African-American performers and a wealth of sound effects and background
music. Often-heard stories of The Creation, Noah,
Moses, and King David vie for listeners’ attention.
But sometimes it’s the small things that are the most striking, like the
sound of Eden’s snake or the delicate phrasing of a psalm. And what
preacher could ever hope to compete with the sensual reading of the
“Song of Solomon” as voiced by Denzel and Pauletta Washington? Some
will find this multimedia approach distracting rather than enjoyable,
but those searching for an innovative alternative to traditional scripture
reading will be elated. S.D. 2008 Audies Finalist

Grover Gardner
One of the most celebrated and accomplished narrators of audiobooks, Grover Gardner has recorded in a voice of “sandpaper
and velvet” for nearly three decades. After first working in Washington,
D.C., for the Library of Congress, Grover established his own independent recording studio in Maryland, where he recorded hundreds of
audiobooks that garnered awards throughout the industry. Grover is
one of AudioFile’s Golden Voices and has received dozens of
Earphones Awards for exceptional performances. In 2007, Grover
moved to Ashland, Oregon; he continues to record as well as manage
Blackstone Audiobooks productions as Studio Director.
Grover has always been interested in theology, spirituality, and
Christian literature. His audiography of recordings includes works by
Dallas Willard, A.W. Tozier, Will Durant, John Piper, R.C. Sproul,
Eugene Peterson, and Francis Beckwith. Grover notes that these
works pose an interesting challenge. “You have to put yourself in the
author’s shoes, because the author has a specific plan or methodology
that will be of tremendous benefit to their specific audience. Then, as
the narrator, you have to create that specific audience, and I imagine
an audience hungry for spiritual information. I commit to each point
of view during the recording to make it interesting and instructive.”
Grover spoke with AudioFile in a recorded interview; you can listen at

THE GREAT OMISSION: Reclaiming Jesus’s
Essential Teachings on Discipleship
Dallas Willard
Read by Grover Gardner
Contemporary Christian philosopher Dallas Willard
calls upon followers of Christ to participate in active
discipleship, a way of life that many churches today
seem to consider to be optional. Without dismissing
the importance of logic, scientific inquiry, the arts, and spiritual seeking—Willard deftly distills the reverence of historical Christian
leaders and mystics into a contemporary way of life that transmutes
the treasures of Christianity into action. The result, he believes, is an
active discipleship and partnership with God. Initially, Grover
Gardner infuses the text with a narration that borders on preaching,
yet he soon hits his stride, settling into a pleasant rhythm. His voice
is clear and accurate as he seamlessly delivers biblical citations and
the author’s message itself. L.V.B. 2008 Audies Finalist

GOOD, BETTER, BLESSED:
Living with Purpose, Power and Passion
Joel Osteen
Read by Joel Osteen
With crisp diction and a melodious baritone,
Joel Osteen delivers 10 of his most popular sermons, recorded live at Lakewood Church.
Adding touches of humor, he combines personal examples with scripture to communicate
feel-good biblical counsel. He begins sermons
with the words, “This is my Bible. I am what it says…” The talks include
audience participation and end with a brief salvation message and altar
call. Comparing humans to computers, Osteen says that human software is contaminated by the enemy—Satan—who promotes bondage
and negativity. With a seamless narration Osteen explains how to reprogram one’s mind through scripture and visualization techniques.
Positive thinking, he believes, produces constructive attitudes and
behavior and the courage to be different. G.D.W.

DEFENDING YOUR FAITH:
An Introduction to Apologetics
R.C. Sproul
Read by Robertson Dean
Sproul, a fixture in modern Christian apologetics,
addresses the superstructure of the apologetical
system, dealing with just two questions while
laying down the structure that presuppositional
apologetics should take. Discussing myriad
issues along the way, Sproul gives logical
defense to the concept of the existence of a God and to the validity of
scripture. But rather than confronting them directly, he builds the case
by a masterful exposition of both the apologetic method and the
logical fallacies of the unbeliever’s thought system. Tracks are roughly
10 minutes apiece, and Robertson Dean gives an intelligent and
intelligible reading, drawing listeners in and keeping their attention
while conveying deep philosophical ideas in a way that makes them
easy to understand without oversimplification. S.M.M.

WALKING IN YOUR DESTINY: How to
Receive Your Spiritual Inheritance Now
Juanita Bynum
Read by Sandra Burr
In Matters of the Heart, the author described her
transition from excessive ambitiousness to
Christian enlightenment. Here, as voiced in the
mature and inspiring reading of Sandra Burr,
she frames the phenomenon of enlightenment
as one that depends on selecting and trusting
the right spiritual teachers. The biblical lessons
she cites follow the theme that people need to
submit to the spiritual leadership of church
fathers to find the correct spiritual path.
Framed as a matter of following the heart, Bynum’s message will resonate most strongly with listeners who desire the comfort of
unfettered faith in God and His ordained leaders. T.W.

PEACE WITH GOD
Billy Graham
Read by Jack Garrett
Only the acceptance of God’s love can help us avoid
worldly temptations, says this unabridged reading
of Billy Graham’s 1953 book, revised by Dr. Graham
in 1984. Though the deteriorating moral climate
today makes his message even more relevant, the
basic message is still old-time religion by one of its
best teachers. It took courage for Jack Garrett to
record the words of one of the most powerful orators of our time, and he wisely takes a backseat to
Graham’s text instead of trying to take on the great man’s verbal and
moral authority. This soul-reaching listening experience will move
Christians at all levels of devotion. T.W.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES FOR THE
CHRISTIAN LIFE
Donald S. Whitney
Read by Grover Gardner
Grover Gardner narrates with full attention to the
details of the 12 spiritual disciplines identified by
the author, including scripture reading, prayer,
worship, fasting, and journaling. The purpose
of carrying out these disciplines is to become
more Christ-like in thought, word, and deed.
Whitney’s discussion draws from the early Church fathers, as well as
Reformer, Puritan, and Quaker writers, and Jesus Christ Himself.
Gardner’s diction is crisp and clear as the author explains the meaning of each discipline and examines the benefits of each in the pursuit
of holiness. Whitney also offers practical suggestions on how to incorporate spiritual workouts into daily routines for long-term growth in
godliness and personal character development—leading to fundamental freedom, ironically, the ultimate reward of discipline. G.D.W.

THE HOLINESS OF GOD
R. C. Sproul
Read by Grover Gardner
Over two decades ago Sproul published his
masterpiece on God’s holiness. It could
have failed to capture readers’ attention. It
could have failed to capture the message of
God’s glory. It did neither and, instead,
exceeded all expectations to become a standard work on the subject. Grover Gardner
rolls smoothly through the accessible
material, which invites pondering while
doing justice to a deep work on a subject often taken for granted. He
exhibits the tone of a favorite teacher, reading with rich inflection,
and subtly alters his delivery from speaker to speaker instead of
attempting different voices or accents, which would sound leaden in
a book like this. S.M.M.

FOURTH DAWN: A.D. Chronicles, Book 4
Bodie Thoene, Brock Thoene
Read by Sean Barrett
Sean Barrett’s masterful performance gives
an authentic flavor to the biblical story of
Herod, King of Judea; Zachariah and his wife,
Elisheba; Onias the tutor; the angel Gabriel;
and Mary and Joseph. Barrett’s depiction of
Herod’s insanity is captivating. His depiction of Gabriel’s angelic voice,
complete with appropriate sound effects, is stunning when Gabriel
delivers his prophesy to Zachariah: He and Elisheba, long past childbearing age, will give birth to a son. Barrett deftly captures Zachariah’s
disbelief. When Gabriel tells Mary she has been chosen to carry
the Messiah, Barrett’s beguiling performance equips listeners to
experience her joy, wonder, fear, and even her lingering questions.
Outstanding sound effects and a commanding performance of this
historical fiction make this an unforgettable production. G.D.W.

Ruth Ann Phimister uses distinctive
vocal variations and European accents in
this sweeping immigration saga of the
late 1800s. When three young Swedish
sisters, Elin, Kirsten, and Sofia, lose their
mother, and then their father to suicide,
they leave Sweden for America. With masterful pacing and understatement, Phimister captures the fears of women without a
benefactor. Aboard ship, family secrets and shameful relations are
revealed, which will destroy them if they’re not dealt with. Phimister’s
gentle voice richly characterizes each sister with an individual voice
and mannerisms. She gives a polished performance of their initial

the harsh realities of Ellis Island. Don’t miss this captivating tale of

SPRING’S GENTLE PROMISE
Janette Oke
Read by Johnny Heller
Johnny Heller narrates this fourth and final
installment in the Seasons of the Heart
series with vivid characterizations. He
embraces each character, giving a sense of
multiple narrators, and excels in showing
Joshua Chadwick’s surprise and excitement
when the family farm is signed over to him with a clear title when he
becomes an adult. Heller’s cadence matches the gentle rhythmic flow
of family energy and encouragement, then switches to rising apprehension as Joshua realizes the scope and dimension of managing the
farm and begins to doubt his own abilities. This homespun story of a
bygone era is a delightful finish to this series. G.D.W.

SABRINA
Lori Wick
Read by Jill Shellabarger
In the 1880s frontier town of Denver,
Colorado, Danny, a kind policeman,
and his wife, Callie, offer help to the
beautiful prostitute Sabrina. With
warmth and empathy, Jill Shellabarger
depicts Sabrina’s acceptance, which
gives her hope and a new life in Christ. Shellabarger’s optimistic characterization of Sabrina as she begins a new life contrasts sharply with
her later fear of exposure when she travels to the Montana Territories.
Shellabarger powerfully portrays Sabrina’s compulsion to turn
around the lives of the young women who are practicing prostitution
there. With careful pacing Shellabarger also portrays Sabrina’s growing interest in the town’s pastor. Shellabarger gives a polished
performance as the author explores themes of forgiveness and new
beginnings. G.D.W.

REBECCA’S REWARD
Lauraine Snelling
Read by Renee Ertl
Renee Ertl captures Rebecca Board’s
youthful dream of starting an ice cream
parlor in her hometown of Blessing. With
subtle emotional nuances she depicts
Rebecca’s brother’s initial humor—he’s
certain she’s too young—which soon
turns to concern when he sees she’s serious. Ertl’s portrayal of
Rebecca’s frustration with her family’s lack of belief in her is especially believable. When Rebecca visits her cousin Penny in Bismarck, she
visits a soda shop to gain business advice. Ertl perfectly renders
Rebecca’s new sense of direction and determination to succeed when
she returns home. In addition, Ertl’s depiction of business owner Mr.
Jeffers, as well as town gossip Mrs. Valders and her shy adopted son,
brings laughter and tears. This is too good to miss. G.D.W.

A MENDING AT THE EDGE
Jane Kirkpatrick
Read by Kirsten Potter
Kirsten Potter’s vocal skill and range are
so versatile that she sounds like multiple narrators as she portrays Emma Wagner Giesy
and her four children, as well as Emma’s
disapproving parents. In the final book of
Kirkpatrick’s trilogy, Emma separates from
her abusive husband and travels to a colony
in the Oregon Territories to raise her
children alone. Manipulating pitch and tone
and, in some scenes, German accents, Potter gives give authenticity to
Emma’s frustration at the colony’s prejudice towards her and with calm
certitude portrays Emma’s fight for her boys and a house of her own.
Emma’s faith in the Lord never wavers, even when her boys are taken
from her. Kirkpatrick fans shouldn’t miss this one. G.D.W.
