the authentic sounds of a concert grand
have been faithfully recorded and digitally

SOMM zur Situation der Branche

Anlässlich der Wirtschaftspressekonferenz
der Messe ging der Vorstandsvorsitzende
der SOMM, Jochen Stock, auf einige wichtige Rahmenbedingungen der Branche ein.
So lag der Umsatz, der mit Musikinstrumenten und Musikalien im Jahr 2009
erwirtschaftet wurde, bei 1,3 Milliarden
EUR und damit 100 Millionen EUR über
dem Ergebnis des Jahres 2008. Die allgemein gute Konjunktur im Jahr 2010 spiegele sich auch in den Umsatzzahlen der MIBranche wider. Bereits im Krisenjahr 2009
konnten sich die deutschen Marktteilnehmer gut behaupten, im Jahr 2010 legte die
Branche noch einmal um 7,1 Prozent zu.
Laut SOMM-Erhebung stieg der Umsatz
mit Musikinstrumenten und Equipment
von 806 Mio. EUR auf rund 860 Mio. EUR.
Stärkste Umsatzträger waren Tasten- und
Saiteninstrumente
Eindringlich wies Jochen Stock in seiner
Rede auf die Verantwortung der Politik hin,
vernünftige Rahmenbedingungen für die
musikalische Ausbildung zu setzen. Es
fehle an geschulten Lehrkräften und Finanzierung, es könne nicht sein, dass die Politik in Deutschland tatenlos zuschaue, wie
der Musikunterricht auf ein vorsteinzeitliches Niveau sinke. Es könne auch nicht
sein, dass nur die private Wirtschaft für die
Förderung der musikalischen Bildung, als
wesentlicher Bestandteil einer ganzheitlichen Bildung, zuständig sei. Stock forderte
die Parteien und die Kultusministerkonferenz auf, endlich Schluss zu machen mit
leeren Worthülsen, in denen Bildung stets
nur für Wahlkampfzwecke instrumentalisiert werden.
SOMM sums up the situation
At the fair’s financial press conference, Jochen Stock, Chairman of the Society of
Music Merchants (SOMM), was keen to
present some important facts about the industry. Sales of musical instruments and
music supplies in 2009 rose to 1.3 billion
euros, that’s an increase of 100 million
euros over the figure for 2008. The general
upturn in the economy in 2010 was also
reflected in the sales figures for the musical instrument sector. Despite the financial
crisis in 2009, German companies were
able to do well on the market, and in 2010
the sector recorded further growth of 7.1
percent. According to a survey conducted
by SOMM, sales of musical instruments
and equipment increased from 806 million
euros to around 860 million euros, with
keyboard and string instruments registering the greatest sales.
In his speech, Jochen Stock insisted that
politicians had to take responsibility for
creating the right conditions in which students could further their musical education. He bemoaned the lack of trained
teachers and adequate finance. Politicians
must not sit back and do nothing while
theoretical and practical music teaching
sank to Stone Age levels. He went on to
say that it was wrong for only private enterprise to be responsible for promoting
musical education, as an essential part of
general education. He therefore called on
all parties and on the culture minister conference to put an end, once and for all, to
all the empty words about education that
get trotted out simply to win elections.

presentation at the legendary King Kamehameha Club. First-class artists showed off

handcrafted “master-made” flutes and piccolos, the new CSGIII Custom clarinets, the
Custom Z soprano saxophone series and
numerous instruments from the NEO line
of brass band instruments. The winners of
a pan-European sell-through dealer campaign were also announced at the event

Custom guitars from Martin
■ MARtIN GUItARS is launching two new
guitars from its Custom Shop, the cS-3511 and the cS-21-11. Both will be available
exclusively only this year. The 35 model
has Madagascar rosewood back and sides
and a Carpathian spruce top. The neck
is hand crafted from mahogany and has
an ebony fingerboard. The CS-21-11 is of
similar construction but has an Adirondack spruce top. What is particularly noteworthy here is that traditional hide glue
has been used. This is a time-consuming
method but still the method of choice.

A logical addition
■ Good sound from an acoustic instrument
depends not only on the pickup but also
on the amplifier. The Finnish pickup manufacturer B-Band therefore took the logical step of producing their own acoustic
amplifier. The Uros 100 W amp was developed in cooperation with the loudspeaker
specialist Sami Penttila. It has two channels for instruments and microphones and
three-band EQ with semi-parametric mids.
The amp also features feedback suppression, a 10" speaker and a 2,5" tweeter.

Performance. Sie entsprechen den
bekannten und lange eingeführten
Modellen D-18 und D-28 der StandardSerie, sind aber mit den modern zugeschnittenen Hälsen der Performing
Artist-Serie ausgestattet. Diese sind
schlanker geformt und mit einem
etwas weiteren Saitenabstand
versehen, was der linken
Hand die Arbeit erleichtert.

A new neck with an old
tradition
■ Martin Guitars is launching the
D-18P and D-28P High Performance models. They correspond to the familiar traditional D-18 and D-28 from the Standard
Series but are equipped with the modern
tapered necks from the Performing Artist
Series. The necks offer the player a slimmer feel. The first couple of frets are also
designed for a more comfortable feel due
to a special spacing. The D-18P has a mahogany body and a spruce top, while the
D-28P has a rosewood body and spruce
top.

A happy tune
■ Leaving your tuner at home can spoil
your whole day. Shadow has now developed a tuner for electric guitars that is installed permanently in the instrument,
something that acoustic guitar players
have enjoyed for some time. The sH Etuner is housed discreetly in the frame of
a standard humbucker and is activated at
the touch of a button. There is no need for
any woodworking skills; you just need to
replace the frame. At the moment only
guitars with humbuckers can benefit, but
the company is working on other versions.

This 19"/2U amplifier from California is

weighs less than 17 pounds. It has an integrated crossover switch for sending low
frequencies to a subwoofer and high frequencies to a satellite. An FOH concept
with two units, one on each PA side, is a
particularly cost-effective solution. The
amplifier has a dynamic air-cooled PowerLight supply. The fan blows from the back
to the front. There are phono, TRS and
XLR options for the inputs, and Speakon

Additions to the EAW KF series

■ The successor to the DriveRack PA
from dbX is the driverack pa+. It is
equipped with new tunings for loudspeakers and amplifiers and a USB interface that makes it easy to update the unit
with further presets. A real time analyzer,
mute buttons on the front panel, an improved setup wizard, an auto EQ wizard
and a new AutoLevel wizard make setting
up the systems easier than ever. All the
other features of the processor with its six

brother of the M-400, M-380 and M-300
mixing consoles in the series and will
form the heart of a system that can be
expended via the digital Multicore sys-

transmitters have been upgraded in their
broadband from 24 MHz to 36 MHz. Each

on quick and simple switching between the

audacious name of a drum series from
Remo that are better suited to quiet playing. They produce a pure deep bass tone
with a reduced loudness level. The NSL
Tubano is available in six sizes – 10", 12"

NSL Tubanos are supplied with NSL mallets and Volume Control Caps. The REMO
NSL Djembe is played like a traditional
djembe, or with NSL mallets. The djembe

kontrollierter musikalischer Klang überzeugte Künstler wie Joe Morello, Jon

Lautstärke und der kühlen Ästhetik in
elektrisch verstärkter und elektronischer
Musik schwand die Nachfrage, so dass
die Formula 602 in den 1990ern eingestellt wurde. Heute markieren die Wärme
der traditionellen CuSn20-Legierung und
gleichbleibende Klangqualität auf höchstem Niveau jedoch wieder musikalische
Werte, weshalb die Wiedereinführung der
beliebtesten Formula-602-Modelle nur folgerichtig ist. Lieferbar sind Thin Crashes,
Hi-Hat und Ride. Die Formula 602 werden
