Why Parents Choose Private School
By Our Kids Canada’s Private School Guide
Every family has a different reason for considering a private school
education, but nearly all agree that private schools provide their children
with:
• Smaller classes and more structure
• Preparation for post-secondary studies
• A shared philosophy and approach to education
• Enriched and focused academic setting
• More emphasis on specialties like art, music, athletics and
extracurricular activities
• Many chances for parents to get involved and more accountability to
parents
Students who attend private schools can be more academically challenged, exposed to
clearer value systems, given greater access to teachers, and may simply feel safer. Some features parents
look for when they turn to the private system include; a specific educational approach, such as Montessori or
Waldorf, a particular religious or cultural setting, a strong academic setting or a program for children who are
gifted, have special needs, or require a special schedule due to art, music or sport training.
Who chooses private school education?
Families who choose the private education system tend to be concerned with the development and all-round
character building of their children. Studies show that families of all sizes and ethnic backgrounds have turned
to the private system. Although the notion remains that private school families are very wealthy, studies show
that children from both ends of the income distribution attend private schools; 29 per cent of children who
attend private schools are from families with incomes below $50,000, while 26 per cent are from families with
at least twice as much income.
In May 2007, The Fraser Institute conducted a study into the reasons parents choose private schools. The
report, Ontario’s Private Schools: Who Chooses Them and Why? is based on a survey of 919 Ontario
households with children attending private schools. The study found that the top 5 reasons parents chose
private school were: Disappointment with the public or separate schools; Smaller class sizes; Dedicated
teachers; Emphasis on academic quality; and Safety.
Where to learn about private schools?
If you’re a parent considering private school, the October Our Kids Private School Expos in Toronto or HaltonPeel are a great opportunity to learn about the curriculum and how your child could benefit. Families can meet

Be Cool, Go Litter-less
By Jana Campbell, Founder of Fenigo.com
These days being green is cool, so I’d like to encourage you to be cool
when going back to school! When picking a lunchbox, there a few things
to consider:
Size matters!
Make sure all the reusable containers will fit into the lunchbox. For
smaller kids – ensure that the lunch bag is easy to open and that it can
fit into their backpack.
Keep it cool!
Most lunch eaters will require an insulated lunch bag. Don’t be fooled by your
bag’s insulation. Add an ice pack that will last until the lunch hour.
Keep it smelling fresh!
Machine-washable or dishwasher-safe lunch bag is a must for younger kids. Lunch containers don’t always
get closed properly.
Lunch containers
Invest in a few containers at the start and add once you know what works well. Bento style is a trend and
there is a good reason why. It allows you to offer a selection of foods in a divided container. It’s great for ikds
that don’t like carrots touching cucumbers, etc. A thermal food container is a must for kids that like warm food
for lunch. Make sure to warm the container with hot water prior to filling it with hot food.
Reusable cutlery
Plastic forks do not have to be replaced with fancy silverware. There are so many great on-the-go options
that are a lot more pleasant to use when enjoying a lunch on the go. Protect your lunch bag from holes by
wrapping the fork in a reusable napkin unless your reusable cutlery has a carrying case.
Forget the plastic baggies
Don’t use plastic - there are so many great reusable snack and sandwich bag options out there!
Drink container
If cold water is important to you - an insulated bottle is the way to go. It will be more costly, but might be a
worthwhile investment. If your kids drink milk or juice on the go, make sure the container is easy to clean.
Label containers!
Dishwasher-safe labels can get expensive so you could always order labels with your family’s last name and
use it for the whole family.
Happy lunch-making!

10 tips for a successful year
Set the stage for a successful school year. It all starts at home!
1. Organize your Schedule
Use a time management chart or an app to schedule in study and
homework time, school meetings, projects and tests.
2. Enforce Healthy Habits
Kids can’t perform when they don’t feel good. To do well in school,
follow healthy habits at home with proper sleep, healthy eating, and
exercise.
3. Stick to a Routine
Kids thrive on structure and routine. If their day is planned out from wake up
to bedtime and all steps in between, that provides a sense of comfort.
4. Create a ‘Launch Pad’ or School Zone
Have a single place to put backpacks, coats, shoes, lunchboxes, sports equipment, and school projects. Kids
will find everything easily each day when they head to school.
5. Designate a Homework Space
Kids should have a designated desk or table just like at school, with plenty of light, supplies, and resources. A
homework space makes it easier for children to complete assignments at home.
6. Encourage Reading
Reading is the gateway to all kinds of learning. The more your child reads, the better chance she has of
becoming a proficient reader which improves overall performance in school.
7. Talk Often
Keep lines of communication open with your child about his classroom, teacher and friends. Let your child
express anxieties, excitements, or disappointments about each day. Provide support and encourage all his
achievements and efforts.
8. Get Involved
Extend your support to your child’s school. Meet teachers regularly to address concerns as they arise. Get
involved in parent/teacher meetings and school field trips when possible.
9. Set Goals
Teach your child set realistic goals for the school year and make a list of what they want to achieve. They will
learn how to work to achieve their best.
10. After-School and Weekend Programs
Encourage your child to participate in extracurricular activities. It’s a great way for children to develop their
talents and interests, build confidence, experience success, and meet friends.
