Dear Member:
On behalf of Catholic Life Insurance, I want to wish all our members and friends a
blessed Holiday Season. Our cover artwork reminds us that Jesus is the reason for
this holy season.
As we have been blessed, it is only fitting that we remember those who have been
good to us. For the 54th consecutive year, Catholic Life remembered our priestmembers with a small stipend. Additionally, we made donations in 21 dioceses to
the Retirement Fund for Religious so that those who have given so much to us can
live in dignity when they retire.
As we celebrate this special season, we are reminded that our Branches keep the
spirit of Christmas alive throughout the year. We invite you to turn to page 15 to
learn about the Make a Difference Day projects that our members took part in and
again on page 20 to see the projects that our Branches have performed over the
past few months.
As 2015 winds down, it is with great pride that I announce that Catholic Life
Insurance is on target for another successful year. Our assets, insurance in force and
reserves continued to grow this year as we welcomed new families to our family.
We are excited about 2016 and the opportunities that it will bring. Foremost,
Catholic Life will celebrate our 115th year of operation. We are announcing two
special Member Appreciation celebrations in this publication. All are available on
a first come, first served basis. Look for details inside. We’ve also introduced a new
member benefit called PerkSpot to help you save money.
In closing, my family and I wish you a very merry Christmas. We look forward to
serving you for many years to come. May God bless you!
Sincerely,
J. Michael Belz

LEADERSHIP
TEAM
CHANGES
Marty Mabe
SCHOLARSHIP FOR CATHOLIC LAITY
NOW AVAILABLE
Recent changes have taken place in the Home
Office leadership team. Effective December 31,
Vice President and Corporate Secretary Marty
Mabe is retiring after 35 years with Catholic Life.
Mabe joined the team in 1980 as an assistant to
then Vice President Michael Belz. She served as
an Assistant Vice President and Vice President
before adding the title of Corporate Secretary
to her title in 2004. Through the years, she lent
her talents to a variety of departments, most
recently as the Human Resources Director.
“Marty has been my right hand for 35 years,” said
President Belz. “She has been a huge contributor
to Catholic Life’s phenomenal growth in the
past three decades. We will miss her terribly but
wish her great happiness in her retirement.”
Shanna Smith
Dawn Fanfelle
Shanna Smith has been hired to fill the position
of Executive Assistant to the President. Smith
will work directly with President Belz and the
Catholic Life Board of Directors.
Meanwhile, Agency Recruiter Dawn Fanfelle has
been promoted to Human Resources Director.
She is responsible for the hiring of Home Office
team members. Additionally, she will continue
to recruit Agents for the Sales team.
Those who want to serve the Church in a professional
capacity, but need additional education, have a
scholarship opportunity through the Rev. Msgr. Larry
J. Droll scholarship fund. The annual scholarship
is designed to financially assist Catholic laymen and
women who want to pursue graduate education in
theology and church-related professions.
The applicant does not have to be a Catholic Life
member. He or she must be a practicing Roman
Catholic, and must reside in a state where Catholic
Life Insurance operates. Individuals seeking to
become Catholic schoolteachers, Catholic school
administrators, seminarians, and members of religious
orders or permanent deacons are not eligible to apply.
“Students may attend any graduate school that is
recognized officially by the Roman Catholic Church
and is located in the states where Catholic Life
operates,” said Msgr. Droll. “Applicants may also be
enrolled in an extension program or in The Catholic
University of America School of Canon Law.”
HOW DO YOU APPLY
Applications can be downloaded from our website at
www.cliu.com. The deadline to apply is February 15,
2016. For more information or to have an application
sent by mail, please call the Communications
Department at 1-800-292-2548 or e-mail

PAYING WITH ONLINE CHECKS If you are paying your life insurance, IRA or annuity premium with an online check, be sure
that you enter the correct payment amount. Don’t forget to include the account number that the funds are to be applied to in the memo
section of the check. This insures that your payment is applied to the correct certificate to avoid an error or possible termination of your
certificate. If the payment is to be applied to several accounts, make sure you include all account numbers.
Having your premium automatically taken out of your bank account is the best way to insure that you don’t miss a payment. To set up a
bank draft, please contact our Membership Service Dept.

 WATCH FOR 1099S IN YOUR MAILBOX
FORMS TO ARRIVE IN LATE JANUARY
Among the credit card bills, post-holiday sales flyers and
junk mail that arrive following the first of the year will be
a number of letters that members will want to save. These
contain the W-2s, 1099s, and other forms that you’ll need to
file your income tax in mid-April.
Computer software has enabled Catholic Life to issue a
1099 form that is printed on an 8½ x 11 sheet of paper with
the form number 1099 printed at the top of the page. To
make it easy to identify, the 1099 form comes in a special
envelope labeled IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION.
When you receive this envelope, be sure to put it in a safe
place with all your other incoming tax documents so you’ll
be ready when the time comes to fill out income tax forms
that are due April 15.

Giving
Thanks
to Clergy
For more than 50 years,
Catholic Life Insurance
has said “thank you”
to approximately 200
Archbishops, Bishops
and priests with a gift
during this blessed season.
These individuals, who
are members, spiritual
advisors and supporters
of Catholic Life, receive a
small cash gift and a letter
of appreciation.
“We are very proud for
everything that these men
do for us and the people
of their communities,”
said President J. Michael
Belz. “We are so proud to
be able to give these gifts
every year at
Christmas time.”
Family surrounds Bertha Holley of McKinney as she receives her golden certificate
and gold rosary from General Agent David Walker. In 1940, Mrs. Holley (then Miss
Tschoepe) was a 20-year-old housekeeper when she purchased her original certificate
from local Agent William F. Boerner in Pilot Point, Texas.
Catholic Life also
participates in the annual
Retirement Fund for
Religious collection sending
a stipend to the bishop of
each diocese where we
operate.
Just six years later in 1946, Agnes Schreiber (then Miss Hilbers) obtained her original
certificate Agent Henry J. Ostermann of Windthorst, Texas. At the time she purchased
this policy, she was a 26-year-old clerk. Agent Ricky Schroeder, who currently serves
the Windthorst area, made the presentation to Mrs. Schrieber.
We encourage our
members to let a priest
know how much his service
is appreciated.

FIVE REASONS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER
LIFE INSURANCE AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT
By R. Dennis Best, CLU,
ChCF, LLIF, FIC, CSA Vice
President/Director
of Agencies
As 2015 comes to an end, everyone is looking for that perfect Christmas gift for the people that matter the
most to you. We are bombarded with advertisements on television, radio, the internet, and even on our smart
phones. I know purchasing life insurance is may not be the highest item on most people’s shopping list, but it
should be, especially since so many people procrastinate when it comes to this most important purchase. Think
about doing something that can have an impact not only on this generation but also on many generations to
come. I have compiled a short list (I could give a much longer list of reasons) of five reasons you should buy life
insurance now.
1 Your life insurance coverage at work isn’t enough to handle all your family’s needs. Most group life
coverage is substantially less than the 7 to 10 times your annual wages financial experts recommend.
Additionally, when you leave employment, your group coverage ceases, leaving your family unprotected.
2 Life insurance costs less than you think. Recent surveys indicate people think life insurance costs 3 times
more than it actually costs. The fact is premiums for life insurance are typically lower than monthly bills
for cable TV or cell phones.
3 You still have student loans to repay. Life insurance is a great tool to use upon retirement or to eliminate
your children’s student loans, thereby not passing that obligation on to your heirs.
4 Make sure there’s enough money for your children’s food, clothing and shelter. If your children’s access to
higher education is important, you’ll need enough extra to pay for that as well.
5 You’re not getting any younger. Often younger people put off purchasing life insurance because they
think they are bullet proof and buying cars and going on vacation is more exciting. That is immature
thinking; life insurance is about taking care of your responsibilities to your loved ones. Your parents aren’t
going to take care of your obligations. It’s time for you to accept your responsibilities and take care of
your family because no one else will. Every birthday brings higher life insurance rates; buy now before
your rates go any higher.
Have a peaceful new year.

FAI
H IN ACTION
HOLD THE HOLY INFANT.
Most Reverend
Gustavo García-Siller
Catholic Life Insurance
Spiritual Advisor
Bright colored lights, shining stars, and flickering candles are among the many
festive symbols that we see throughout the Advent and Christmas seasons. For
me, the many nativity scenes displayed in churches, homes and even on front
lawns are the most endearing.
When I see the Baby Jesus lying in the manger, I am reminded of a photo of
Pope Francis holding a statue of the Holy Infant in his arms and kissing it
during a procession at Midnight Mass. The pope has taught us much about
God’s mercy as he has lovingly kissed and blessed many babies during his
travels around the world. So in that context, Pope Francis’ gentle gesture of
faith and love, helps us to better understand the real vulnerability of the Baby
Jesus as God entered into the world as one of us.
In his Christmas homily, the Holy Father proclaimed a message about Jesus
and this humble but glorious moment for all mankind. He said, “You are
immense, and you made yourself small; you are rich, and you made yourself
poor; you are powerful and you made yourself vulnerable.”
Jesus is truly sympathetic of the human condition, because he lived it,
completely and fully. As he grew in wisdom and understanding, he taught us
how to see him in all people, but certainly in the children. He told us, “Bring
the children to me, and do not hinder them.”
As the pope says, “You are immense and you made yourself small.” Jesus lives
in the baby that is in the womb, so let us do all that we can to preserve and
protect the most defenseless. Jesus lives in the babies who suffer the pain of
poverty, so we must bring them to Him for consolation. When we see them
sick for lack of love, we see the suffering Christ in their sadness. We must
bring them to Jesus so he can bless them with His grace, holding their hearts
in his hands.
This Christmas season, may we all follow the example of the shepherds and
the Magi, who sought the infant Jesus living among us. Let us pray for the
intercession of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph so that we may be like the
Holy Family, providing God’s love and protection to the most vulnerable,
especially the children. As we continue our journey through the Christmas
season, let us bring the kiss of peace and the peace of Christ to the infants in
whom we see Jesus’ light and life. May you have a blessed Christmas and may
God’s mercy and love be the true source of your joy.

In addition to being a dedicated Catholic Life employee for
35 years, retiring Vice President and Corporate Secretary
Marty Mabe is also a talented cook and baker. Through the
years, she has shared many treats with the Home Office staff.
Here are some recipes that she’s made with her children and now
grandchildren. In retirement, she plans to spend more time in the
kitchen (at least her husband Bob hopes she will.) Enjoy!

Chocolate Dream Cookies
My son has always loved these easy-to-make cookies and I still make
them for him during the holidays.
2 cups sugar
4 level tablespoons cocoa
1 stick margarine
½ cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups quick rolled oats (uncooked)
1 cup coconut
½ cup chopped pecans
Put first four ingredients in a saucepan and heat, stirring
constantly until mixture reaches a rolling boil. Remove from heat
and stir in last four ingredients. Drop by teaspoon full on waxed
paper. Cookies set as they cool.
I found this recipe a few years ago in a magazine. My grandchildren love
their “Christmas Mice.” Tip: Google Christmas mice for a picture and
variations of this recipe.
Georgia Pecan Pie
My mother shared this recipe with me many years ago. It is a must
have during the holidays, at least that’s my husband’s opinion.
3 eggs lightly beaten
¾ cup dark corn syrup
¾ cup sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
2½ teaspoons vanilla
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup pecans (whole or half)
1 unbaked 9 inch pie shell
Combine eggs and syrup. Mix well. Add sugar. Stir in salt and
vanilla. Sir melted butter into syrup mixture. Spread pecans
on bottom of pie shell. Pour mixture over pecans. Bake at 375
degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until center is firm.
CALLING ALL
COOKS!
Christmas Mice
10 oz. jar of Maraschino cherries with stems
Oreo cookies (I use the “red” Christmas Oreos)
Hershey chocolate kisses
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
2 teaspoons Crisco shortening
Sliced almonds
1 tube of red or pink decorative icing gel
1 tube of green decorative icing gel
Carefully twist Oreo cookies apart and set aside halves with cream
filling. Save plain halves for another use. Unwrap Hershey kisses.
Melt chocolate chips and shortening in microwave; stir until
smooth. Holding cherry by stem, dip in melted chocolate and shake
off excess. Set cherry on flat side of chocolate kiss and position on
cream side of Oreo. Place two almonds between chocolate kiss and
cherry for ears. If needed, refrigerate until set. Decorate with gel for
eyes, nose and holly leaf.
