The Baptism of the Lord
THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod
to the soil. The same when a branch
is grafted onto a tree: the poultice
that joins them at the splice must be
kept wet at all times. Water is the
stuff that binds the very cells of our
bodies together. No wonder religions
throughout all times and cultures
have used it so prominently. When
Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had
come before him. By going to the
Jordan, he made himself one with the
people of Israel who had crossed it
into their Promised Land. With John
the Baptist, Christ wove himself into
the prophetic tradition that heralded
the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of
Mary’s womb, and by partaking in
the rite of the baptism of repentance,
Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the
waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his
Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and
filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us,
as for Jesus, it is also the waters of
baptism that inaugurate our mission
to proclaim the Good News.

In the next couple of days, I was taken to visit many people for anointing
in the village of Emmo by Pat the
Pastoral Facilitator. Some had very
serious surgeries in Anchorage and
were recovering at home. One family
also wanted me to bless their house
as they felt a bad presence there. I
prayed that St. Michael position him-
self in the most prominent place at
the front door and the Guardian Angels in the girl’s room…….

FAMILY ASSISTANCE FOOD COLLECTION
THIRD SUNDAY OF THE MONTH - JANUARY 17/18
Family Assistance has identified the third Sunday of
each month for the collection of food from parishioners attending Mass. Donated food is distributed to
families in need from the ministry’s food pantry on
Thursday afternoons. No person is turned down.

becoming homeless. Should you have any questions, please contact Kevin
Durkin at (714) 974-9728.
Thank You For Your Generous Support.

The Cursillo Movement started in Spain in 1944, and has
been held throughout the United States since 1957. It begins with a three day retreat held at Divine Word Retreat
Center, from Thursday evening through Sunday evening. The next English Men’s weekend began January 8, and
the next Women’s weekend begins January 22. Cursillos

so you can also contact him at (714) 974-1416. Please consider Cursillo as one
of your New Year’s Resolutions, going through Cursillo is like glimpsing at
little bit of Heaven.
The following parishioners plan to attend in January: Neil Harness, Olve Lopez,
Flo Hansen, and Dawn Pattison.
The following parishioners are working: Deacon Doug Cook, Brian Rathswohl,
Tony Provost, Kevin Durkin, Bob Higelin, Tim Hoy, Tim Bartel, Matt Mahoney, Debbie Williams, Mary Jo Durkin, Becca
Bartel, Lisa Camino, Maryanne Fahey, Rose Hasselbeck, Bridgit Harness, Mary Higelin, Michelle

them we are reminded that, in life,
we must be willing to coach and be

J. Windham: “Utopia has a Christian

just a good life-lesson that would
apply to anyone, anywhere,
regardless of religion.”

All adults of the parish are invited to
join us on Tuesday, January 13. We
will be showing the movie “Seven
Days in Utopia”. It’s about influence,
inspiration and a deeper, more
profound way of looking at life and
life’s decisions. Told through the
lives of two characters - an eccentric
rancher with a passion for teaching
truth, and a young golf professional
at the end of his rope looking to
escape the pressures of the game -
