Eduard Ioudenitch showed his extraordinary
talent for conducting when he was
12-year-old. His conducting movements are
lively and delicate. Last year he was even
invited by the contemporary conductor
master Valery Gergiev to perform with
Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in the
New Year’s Concert.
The pianist, Stanislav Ioudenitch
whose skill is extraordinary, has
won the Gold Medal in the Van
Cliburn International Piano
Competition in 2001, which
is one of the World’s most
important piano competitions. The violinist, Maria
Ioudenitch, is a rising star
and now studying in Curtis
Institute of Music which is
considered “the cradle of the
genius musicians.”
This concert is the genius
musicians’ first concert in Asia. The
conductors, Eduard and Yang
Chih-Chin, will take turns to perform
with Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra.
Please come and enjoy the music!

and thus solved the drought
predicament at the time and improved the irrigation for the farmlands in the Fongshan area. To
commemorate his work, the locals built a shrine inside Fongyi Academy. In 1900, Viscount
Kodama Gentarō raised funds for relocating the shrine during his inspection visit to Fongshan.
In 1992, the shrine was upgraded to Caogong Taoist Temple. To this day, Caogong Canal still
remains as Kaohsiung’s primary irrigation canal and has such a deep and long profound impact
on Kaohsiung people.
Right behind Caogong Taoist Temple stands the square Pingcheng Emplacement, the wall of
which is embedded with a granite horizontal inscribed board with Chinese words
“Pingcheng” on it. One can still feel the Emplacement’s impressive magnificence that
once protected the city.

Fongyi Academy’
s Historical Figures’
Story
In order to implement the objective of preserving and revitalizing the historic heritages, Bureau
of Cultural Affairs puts 4 sets of Q-version historical figures according to the historical scenes
of the academy. These figures give the whole academy liveliness and visitors like them so much.
There were two kinds of students in the Academy: those who had completed private schools and
were preparing for the entry-level imperial examination, and those who had passed the entry level
examination and were preparing for the provincial imperial examination. As a result, there was
often a significant age gap among students, as they might be adolescents, young scholars, or aged
students who had not yet passed the examination.

The Negotiations between
the British Consul Gibson and
the Circuit Intendants of
Cing Authority Ceng Sian-de
Over 100 years ago, John Gibson, the British Consul at
Takow, was very upset over the Fongshan Anti-Christian
Riot, during which a lot of churches were burnt down
and some Christians were killed. Also, that camphor
smuggled by some British merchants was confiscated by
authority irritated the British government. As a result,
Great Britain dispatched naval vessels to Taiwan. In
order to resolve the dispute, the Imperial Court of Cing
Dynasty sent Ceng Sian-de, the Administrator of
Sing-Cyuan-Yong District, to Taiwan to handle the
incident. The two parties met and negotiated in the
British Consulate at Takow, but no consensus was
reached. The event led to the Bombardment of Anping
Port. This meeting was one of the most important events
of the Sino-British dealings that occurred in the British

In Chang Chu-chun's photographic works, our familiar world seems to have undergone editing
and pasting by a true master: There is all-new order, and the lens has recorded various scenes
that transcend their individual forms and construct an alternative world full of dramatic tension
via the assembly and overlapping of individual subjective emotions and ideas. Chang Chuchun uses the camera as a brush portraying real situations and tortuous affairs of the heart,
and he records the many facets of the human world in line with his faith in the pursuit of truth,
goodness, and beauty.

Every Photograph Is an Enigma
Photographic images — so familiar to us — are considered immediately intelligible. And yet,
most of them provoke a brief burst of astonishment, doubt or lasting perplexity. Based on a
personal collection of images from various periods gathered over the years, taken by anonymous
photographers, forgotten auteurs or amateurs defying the categories established by the
concept of the auteur-photographer, the vision of Michel Frizot, the owner of this collection of
photographs and the curator of this exhibition as well as a renowned historian of photography,
runs counter to the accepted criteria of history, art and excellence. Every photograph is an
enigma. This enigma does not originate in any effect, style or talent; rather, it is an essential
element of the photographic process itself. It ensues from the distance between human
perception and the camera’s light-sensitive recording, and the resulting overwhelming of our
senses. This exhibition explores ‘what is an enigma for the gaze’ in photography. It sets out to inventory the modes of photographic
capture that invite the viewer to recreate a situation using only the clues the image presents. They will be displayed through three
parts, eleven sections of the exhibition as follow,
1. The presence and arrangement of what has been captured by the photographer are puzzling.
2. The forms generated by the shot and the photographic process are perplexing.
3. The photograph captures a perceptual world which is foreign to the commonly accepted vision.
Above all, it is a question of looking, and looking again. There is, however, no mystery to solve, no investigation to conduct. By
looking, each of us is a producer of meaning and hypotheses. Is it not the enigma of our presence in the world that photography
constantly reformulates?
Heart Tree and Spiritual Rebirth ─ The Art World of Anli Genu
Anli Genu (1958-), whose Chinese name is Anli Lai, was born in the Meihua Village of Atayal
tribe in Jiansih Township, Hsinchu County. He graduated from the Department of Fine
Arts, Chinese Culture University in 1986 and obtained his master of fine arts (M.F.A.) from
the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1992. He is one of the few indigenous artists in
Taiwan who have received complete academic training of art. In addition to being an artist,
Anli Genu is also a full-time indigenous pastor. For him, artistic creation is more than about
issues of his personal life but also about issues concerning the stability and sustainable
development of the whole tribal society. Through art, he attempts to find a system of artistic
rhetoric composed of forms, patterns and images that conform to both Christian beliefs and
traditional tribal cultures to represent both the tribal tradition and modern social order. He
creates his art with religious beliefs and preaches his religion through artistic creation.
This exhibition is a collection of the most important works by Anli Genu over the past nearly three decades and his latest works
created especially for this exhibition. It consists of two major sections: “Heart Tree” and “Spiritual Rebirth”, demonstrating
different facets of the thinking, exploration, artistic creation and art construction of this indigenous artist and pastor. This
exhibition also provides a very good opportunity for us to reflect upon and ponder the development and future direction of
contemporary art, including indigenous art, in Taiwan.

lines and fire marks which are called “Purple Flames and
Fleeting Clouds.” That makes the pottery not only with
practical values but also with natural, primitive and gentle
characteristics which arouse people’s nostalgic feelings.

In 1908, the north-south rail line became fully operational
in Taiwan, marking the beginning of the development of the
island’s tourism industry. After the week-date system was
introduced, which changed the way people planned for their
lives, traveling turned into a common leisure activity. In the
1930s, Taiwan’s mass tourism industry entered a golden
age. When traveling became commonplace, how did people
make arrangements for their trips? Were there any mustsees when they visited Kaohsiung? What gifts would they
pick for family and friends on their way back?
At this exhibition, a series of historical materials such as
guidebooks, old maps and old photos will take visitors back
to the 1930s, showing them how our ancestors packed and
traveled around Kaohsiung.

Food is an indispensable part of our subsistence. However, food is more than enjoyable
(maybe sometimes not so enjoyable) things on the dining table for us. It may involve
religious beliefs, desires, cultures, recognitions and memories. There are four sections in
this exhibition, each exploring the role of food in different fields. “A Feast of Food” is the
introductory section, guiding viewers to know more about food from the perspective of
colors and teaching them about the histories of different kinds of food and the geographical
characteristics of their origins. The section, “Traces of Food”, tells stories about how food
is traded around the world and shows viewers some unique local food. The “An Art World of Food” section demonstrates how
food serves as a source of inspirations for artists in their artistic imagination and interpretation of society and human life. The last
section, “Good to Eat and Look at”, provides hands-on opportunities for viewers to create their own artworks with images of
food from paintings by experimenting with different colors, image placements and composition arrangements.

Chi-Sui Wang's recent painting series have chiefly explored the relationships between
images and time and between images and memory. She has chosen ambiguity as a
subjective means of expression; she creates a central zone in her scenes—like the region
within parentheses—in which she places her feeling of embodiment, and brings in yet
another subjective insight. Apart from showcasing her widely-known painting experiences,
this exhibition places special emphasis on her newest series. In the exhibition, Chi-Sui
Wang further presents the issues of the painting's contemporaneity and an image's material
characteristics. On one hand, she uses traditional realistic painting methods to "represent"
the destruction of the canvas, while on the other relies on the adhesion of multiple pictures
to produce continuous images with a sense of contemporaneity, which makes her art a
reply to art history from an entirely new visual angle based on contemporary painting.

Focusing on the theme of landscape, one of the most popular themes of artistic creation
and also one of the easiest themes for the public to read and appreciate, this exhibition
features representative works from KMFA’s collection as well as works by several
contemporary artists mainly known for their landscape depiction. From this exhibition,
viewers can see different thoughts and facets of works depicting landscape and also
observe how artists of different generations seemingly differ but actually share some
commonalities in telling stories through their works. Behind each of the works in the
exhibition, there are is an exciting world away from the hustle and bustle in the mundane
reality, a beautiful world based on the artist’s life experiences, unique personalities, life
philosophy, and imagination waiting for us to explore and appreciate.

We reach a balance between symphony and Bangzi Opera’s
similarities and differences. The music elements are collected
from the Mongolian folk songs with a quick rhythm. The
concerto part is played with instruments including horsehead
fiddle, erhu, sheng, pipa, etc. The whole play interprets the
story of Genghis Khan and Wang Zhaojun with Bangzi Opera’s
rhythmic figures. With the entirely new original music and strong
appeal, it will make new headway in Taiwan's music world.

A percussion club of a high school reaches the final, but there
may be some variables when a student with disabilities joins
them. On the one hand, students are insistent on getting
champion; on the other hand, they still care about their
partner who has disabilities. Thus, this causes some conflicts
between them. Combining singing, percussion music, and
