Subcutaneous Port Catheter (Port, porta-cath)
Indications: Long-term (months to years) intravenous access; typically
for chemotherapy or antibiotic therapy.
Evaluation and Treatment:
Typically placed in the right upper chest, into a pocket created within
the subcutaneous tissues. The port is connected to a single lumen
catheter, typically 8 French, which resides in the Superior Vena Cava
(SVC). Subcutaneous, absorbable sutures are placed, and the port
catheter may be used immediately. Either local anesthesia, conscious
sedation, or general anesthesia can be utilized.
Benefits include:
Procedure time is typically only 30-40 minutes
Port may remain in place from months to years
