P
rovidence ministries
are driven by a
mission to provide
service and compassion
with special concern for
the poor and vulnerable.
Your philanthropy
makes much of this
mission a reality, and we see this in every
aspect of the programs and services you
support. Thanks to you, these services and
many others are available to everyone in
our community:
• The Sexual Assault Clinic provides
unparalleled support to families and
children in crisis.
• The Sister Rita Fund provides
emergency food, clothing and
transportation for patients transitioning
home from a hospital stay.
• Thousands of hours of respite care are
provided to families whose loved ones
are on hospice, and vigils are held with
patients in the hospital and Mother
Joseph Care Center to ensure they do
not end their journey alone.
• Your support also helps make top
quality, award-winning care possible in
our community through our cardiology,
neurology, and oncology programs as
well as transitional and long term care
at Mother Joseph Care Center.
As we look toward the 125th anniversary
of St. Peter Hospital this September, we
are reminded of the legacy passed to us
by the Sisters of Providence, a legacy to
meet the unique needs of the community
and care for everyone - no matter what
Thank You!
their financial situation. In response to
our area’s rapid growth in recent decades,
St. Peter Hospital has embarked on a
journey to double the size of the Critical
Care Unit. Thanks to local philanthropic
support and wise stewardship of resources,
the new unit will be completed later
this fall, just in time – some might say
providentially in time – to celebrate the
125th anniversary and our continuing
commitment to quality health care for all.
On behalf of my board colleagues, I
express gratitude to you, our donors and
volunteers, who partner with us to keep
the mission alive in our community.
Among our volunteers are incredible
individuals who serve on our board.
We thank Judy Henderson, Bob Lovely,
and Gloria Strait, who retired from the
Board this past August. Collectively,
they provided 65 years of incredible
dedication and service to Providence
St. Peter Foundation. This past year
we also welcomed Caroline Manger,
J. Scott Smitherman, M.D., and Scott
Tibbits, M.D. as they begin their service
as new board members. We value your
commitment to our Providence mission
and to the lives of hundreds of thousands
in our community.

WHEN IT’S A MATTER OF
Life and Death
E
Dave Thoma participates in
cardiac rehab 5 days a week
very second of every day, the heart pumps blood
throughout the body, keeping you alive. When
the heart is struggling to keep up, it loses strength, and
can begin a long process of heart failure. Sixty-year-old
Dave Thoma experienced this last fall. He remembers
going to a soccer game in Seattle with his son, and
found he couldn’t walk up hills without getting severely
winded and exhausted. His primary care physician
referred him to a cardiologist. His doctors watched
him closely, and Dave says, “I went from a treadmill
test to having open heart surgery at St. Peter’s in two
weeks.” Throughout his surgery and hospital stay,
30 years old all over again!” Dave comes to the cardiac rehab center five days a week.
He feels great about the program and values the camaraderie with other participants.
“It’s a positive feeling all the time.
We’re like a family; we all have
something in common.”
The cardiac and cardiac rehab programs
are supported by Providence St. Peter
Foundation, which recently purchased
equipment to preserve blood during heart
surgery, as well as equipment to monitor
the heart while patients like Dave are
participating in cardiac rehabilitation.
“It’s a positive feeling all the time. We’re like a family; we all have something in common.”
Dave says, thanks to the care he
received, “I never felt in danger, I
never felt real pain.” After the initial
recovery from surgery, Dave began
participating in St. Peter Hospital’s
Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.
- Dave Thoma
The program is designed to rebuild
strength and stamina, provide
emotional support, and gain confidence. With the help of knowledgeable staff, the
program provides exercises for the heart as well as education about staying healthy and
caring for the heart.
Dave says, “Cardiac rehab is like having a personal trainer, but in addition to helping
you exercise, they are checking your health too. I’ve lost 30 pounds and I feel like I’m
4
“My recovery has been great thanks to the
physicians and nurses at surgery, all the
way through rehab. The healing has gone
well because my heart isn’t damaged. I
wish I could tell everyone to get help at
the first sign of trouble. It makes things a
lot easier.”
Dave Thoma with his wife
and supporter, Maryann
The Providence St. Peter Regional Heart &
Vascular Center is the largest and most
comprehensive heart program in southwest
Washington. St. Peter Hospital ranks among
the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation
for prompt heart attack treatment.

COMPASSIONATE CARE FOR THE
Dying and Grieving
D
on Thulin and his wife, Renate,
raised their granddaughter,
Amanda, from the time she was an
infant. As Amanda grew up, they
found themselves having to play the
role of parents: providing discipline,
role-modeling, and enforcing everyday
household rules. Amanda was close
to her grandmother, and relied on her
in the typical ways children rely on
their mothers.
In 2007, Renate was diagnosed with
cancer. The family supported Renate
throughout her experience with cancer,
Amanda with her family dog, Wookie
and after an intestinal blockage and
surgery in late 2010, Renate asked to
receive hospice care at their home in Lacey. Amanda remembers, “It was the week
before Christmas. I didn’t even know what hospice was.”
“Providence Hospice was very helpful for
us. They provided great information about
what to expect, and we found she followed
the path almost exactly,” says Don. He adds
fondly, “My wife needed someone who
was as strong willed as her. I remember one
nurse; my wife just loved him.”
“It was the week before Christmas. I didn’t
even know what
hospice was.”
- Amanda Palm
After Renate passed away, a hospice social
worker contacted Don to invite Amanda
to participate in SoundCareKids, a support
program for families with children who have experienced the death of a significant
person
in Palm
their lives.
SoundCareKids
program is offered as a community service

without charge to participants, and is funded in part by donations to Providence St.
Peter Foundation. Don and Amanda began attending SoundCareKids the summer
after Renate’s death. Don says “For a while, Amanda wouldn’t go into the bedroom
where my wife died. But she has really come out of her shell, and I attribute that to
SoundCareKids.”
During Amanda’s time in SoundCareKids, she learned more about her father,
who passed away when she was an infant. “Amanda has been through a lot.
SoundCareKids has helped Amanda understand the death of both her father, and her
grandmother. It has helped open up her father’s side of the family, which is a good
opportunity – it’s given her more time with her family.”
“For a while, Amanda wouldn’t go into the bedroom where my wife died. But she has
really come out of her shell, and I attribute
that to SoundCareKids.”
- Don Thulin
According to Sharon Shadwell, coordinator for SoundCareKids, “One of the greatest
benefits of support groups for grieving children and teens is the discovery that their
feelings are a normal response to the death of a loved one. With all the pressure that
young people feel to perform adequately and fit in with peers at school, we want them
to have a place that they feel safe and accepted just the way they are.”
Amanda boasts with a big smile about SoundCareKids, “We have the best
counselors.” Her grandfather adds, “She’s in a group with other young adults who
have all gone through the same thing. She’s made new friends, and that’s invaluable.”
To support the SoundCareKids program, donations
can be made to Providence St. Peter Foundation.

B
ob Lovely joined the Providence St. Peter
Foundation Board of Directors in 1987. A
resident of Olympia since 1960 and a private
business owner, Bob says he was impressed by
other community leaders who were invested in and
dedicated to Providence. “I said to myself, Here is
an organization that is not self-serving. They are
truly serving the community, and it is well worth
spending my time helping to fulfill their mission.”
In 2003, Bob Lovely and his wife, Mardel,
established a charitable gift annuity with
Providence Health & Services to support the
activities of Providence St. Peter Hospital and the
ministries served by Providence St. Peter Foundation. With an annuity, the donor
receives an immediate charitable tax deduction, and the security of knowing they will
receive income on a regular basis for the remainder of their lives. Bob and Mardel
shared their plans with their two children and said their children understand the
importance of supporting the community and respect their decision. Bob says the
annuity method of giving is a win-win: “This way, we’re able to have our cake and eat
it too, and so does the Foundation.”
Bob and Mardel Lovely,
Legacy Club Members
“Because of the low return rates of typical investments, now is a particularly good
time to make a charitable gift annuity.” - Bob Lovely, Providence St. Peter Foundation Board
Member from 1987-2011
Bob emphasizes that donors should consider the strength of the organization to which
they contribute. He says, “You want the organization to be solid, and you want the
benefit to the community to have a strong impact. Mardel and I have found that in
Providence St. Peter Foundation.”
T
he 24th Annual Christmas Forest raised over $450,000. The event, which ran
Thanksgiving Day through November 30, 2011, had over 6,000 visitors during

“We’re proud of our family’s long history of service and loyalty to Providence St. Peter Hospital.
Our mother was a volunteer for over forty years, and our father served on the Community Board. As sisters, we have continued their tradition of volunteer service, and, along with our brother, created and funded the Leonardson Family Fund in memory of our parents. Established in 2011,
the fund is dedicated to supporting St. Peter Hospital nurses.”
