its polishing process works. DYNAMIC 8000, on

GLOBIC 8000 relies on Nano Acrylate (NAT) –
based on patented Hempel technology – while
DYNAMIC 8000 is based on Silyl Acrylate
technology. Consequently the coatings suit
different types of vessels and trading patterns.

Which is best for your needs?
Nano Acrylate (NAT) technology
– how it works
NAT, a Hempel technology, is based on
nano capsules, which control polishing
and leaching of biocides. When the nano
acrylate is exposed to seawater, water
molecules penetrate the hydrophobic shell
and chemically hydrolyse the hydrophilic
core. This causes the core acrylic polymer
to swell. The core swelling pushes out of
the shell causing it to explode, exposing
the soluble hydrolysed core polymer that
enables polishing.

Silyl Acrylate (SAT) technology
– how it works
Silylated acrylate, like nano acrylate,
is also hydrophobic by nature. Silylated
acrylate only allows very little water to
penetrate the top level of the paint. As this
happens, the water chemically hydrolyses
the silyl binder and activates the polishing
process and leaching of biocides.

The shipping forecast:
Headwinds…
Last year started with optimism
about firmer freight rates and
financial markets eager to fund
corporate expansion across the
industry. However, things turned
out
differently.
The
market
conditions shaping shipping remain
challenging, as sluggish growth and
volatile rates continue to dominate
most sectors. Consequently, ship
owners, ship managers, charterers
and shipyards are under pressure
to increase operational efficiencies
and cut costs.
Challenging times
The high activity of newbuilds during
2009 to 2011 has led to overcapacity
in several shipping sectors resulting
in a significant decline in demand for
new vessels. Freight rates are low
and volatile because of this surplus
capacity and this makes it difficult
for companies to cover their high
fixed costs and operating expenses.
Excessive shipbuilding capacity have
created a tough environment for the
shipyards as well as it has led to a
widespread shut down of smaller,
inefficient yards.
Fuel efficiency still relevant
Crude oil prices, despite the current
reduction, are still a vital factor in
overall operational costs and rates
have more than doubled over the
period 2005 and 2012. High fuel
prices coupled with environmental
imperatives have encouraged ship
owners to invest in more fuel-efficient
vessels and adopt slow steaming
practices. When oil prices are low
shipping companies can benefit more
fully from energy-saving technologies.
Tightening environmental
regulations
The marine industry is under
increasing pressure to comply with
evolving environmental regulations,
which are placing more costs on ship
owners and operators. These new
regulations have been a key influencer
for innovation and technological
advances in the marine coatings

Improving energy efficiency
Our fouling control products allow
vessels to become more fuel efficient
and reduce their environmental
impact. HEMPAGUARD, a revolutionary
fouling defence product launched in
2013, delivers significant fuel savings
and has shown an outstanding
resistance to fouling during idle
periods (even during vessel idle
periods of up to 120 days). The
coating was developed over five
years and was introduced against
a backdrop of rising bunker costs,
tightening environmental regulations
and the introduction of mandatory
Ship Energy Efficiency Management
Plans (SEEMP). HEMPAGUARD is the
only product of its kind to come with
a customer satisfaction guarantee.
Unlike regular hull coatings that,
in general, are specified according
to the vessel’s speed and activity
level, HEMPAGUARD retains its
effectiveness
when
switching
between slow and regular steaming.
Additionally, building on the industry
proven GLOBIC and DYNAMIC range
of antifouling systems, we have
launched a further two new antifouling
products in December 2014 for drydockings and new buildings which
deliver fuel savings of up to 3% and
provide added flexibility to shipowners

Reducing operating costs
Our

with the purchase, application and
maintenance of coating systems,
ensuring vessels spend less time in
drydock and significantly reducing
maintenance costs for owners,
operators and shipyards. Our new
pure epoxy coating, HEMPADUR EASY,
requires minimal expensive surface
preparation and its fast drying and
recoating time means that the vessel
spends less time in dock. This saves
money for the owner.
Our products can be applied quickly
so dry dock periods are reduced.
Further efficiency gains are generated
through using our cargo hold coatings
that lower maintenance costs and
reduce cleaning times between
loads. We have products tough
enough to extend a cargo hold’s
coating repair interval for up to 10
years. Our products for water ballast
tanks reduce the risk of cracking,
thus reducing the maintenance cost
during the vessel’s lifetime.

with new products, which raise the bar for flexibility and

New QUATTRO XO – the 5th generation of the popular
universal primer – comes in a choice of versions that
have been cost-optimised for key territories with different
wish lists: China, Korea and Europe. Furthermore, these
offer new performance benefits and can be tailored to
individual needs: they can be specified with aluminium
and fiber pigmentation.
New HEMPADUR EASY 47700 is easy by name and
by nature: a truly ‘all season’ product, it delivers
outstanding all-year-round application performance and
surface tolerance. In addition, it offers much faster
drying and recoating – helping to minimise time spent on
application and therefore costs.

Tailored to country and yard-specific requirements,
QUATTRO XO coatings offer strong anti-corrosion
performance and can be applied to all areas of a
vessel.

Considering the factors below will help to ensure
that you spend the rest of the docking period
satisfied you made the right choice of hull coating.
FACT:
Over 90% of premature coating
failures are caused by defective
surface preparation or improper
application – or a combination of
the two.
It’s important to bear in the mind the
coating application process, as well as
the coating itself. When a coating fails
the result is usually rusting, pitting,
chemical attack - or some other form
of damage to the underlying structure.
Ease of application is therefore a key
commercial consideration.

FACT:
Different yards operate different
working hours and shift patterns.
This has implications for drying time
– particularly if more than one coating
is applied. So it is important to check
out the drying time of the coating, as
well as the working schedule of the
yard in question. To minimise out-ofservice time it is important that the
yard applies the second coat as soon
as the first is dry.
FACT:
Idle periods are an increasingly
significant threat when it comes
to fouling.
A large proportion of shipowners
consider idle periods to be the main
threat when it comes to fouling. If
you anticipate your vessel will spend
time idle you need to factor this in to
your decision making when choosing
a coating.

Up to 75% of shipping lines have
now adopted slow steaming.
Many slow-steaming vessels follow
regular trading patterns. If this is the
case with your vessel then you may
choose a conventional hull coating
that performs well in the same waters
all the time. However, if you cannot be
sure about future trading patterns for
your ship, it makes sense to consider
a non-conventional solution that
works in any kind of waters.

There are many competing

The market is full of fuel savings/

On a daily basis, on a worldwide level, coating advisors guard against
problems, liaise closely with customers and guide contractors. This
ensures that project expectations and deliverables are always

A Hempel CA in the field helps to avoid serious problems on an
everyday basis. A coating advisor always needs to be proactive,
liaising with customers about the progress of work and instructing
the contractor accordingly. He must follow up on all phases of
the project, reject any poor quality completed work and insist on
corrective action.
One of the commonest problems we face is the paint specification
not being followed properly during the realisation of the project. This
leads to paint defects or even paint failures and frustrating delays in
the work. In some cases, the parties involved might not be equipped
to check the various stages of the process - for instance making
sure the thickness of the applied coat matches the specification.
The presence of Hempel Technical Service means that the paint
specification agreed between customer and contractor is followed
and that the customer’s expectations are met.

Making a big splash
Launched in 2013, HEMPAGUARD® occupies a unique, and increasingly popular,
space in the market. Though it has been on the market for just 14 months, it has
already been chosen to protect more than 200 different full ship vessels, ranging

Uni-Tankers
is
dedicated
to
transporting liquid cargoes in a safe
and secure manner while protecting
the environment. The company
wanted an efficient hull coating
for its vessel the Fionia Swan
that would deliver both significant
fuel savings and reductions in
associated C0 2 emissions. It chose
HEMPAGUARD® X7.
HEMPAGUARD® X7 was applied to
M/T Fionia Swan – a 15,000 DWT
Ice 1A tanker designed for carrying oil
and liquid chemicals – in September
2013. The flat bottom and vertical
sides of the hull were grit-blasted
and 1.540 litres of the coating were
applied.
The application process, carried
out with the assistance of Hempel’s
Technical Service team, was smooth
and swift.
Proven performance
Uni-Tankers carefully monitored
the performance of the M/T Fionia
Swan, paying particular attention to
fuel consumption, from the time of
the application to February 2014.
The company registered impressive
fuel savings of 4-5%, rising up to 8%
in certain loading conditions when
trim adjustments had been made.
