Burn Fat While You Sleep
I know that sounds like
a late night TV commercial for the newest miracle
pill but it isn’t. I am talking about a solution based
on scientific research on
the sub cellular level. I am
referring to the tiny power
plants within the millions
and millions of cells within our bodies called mitochondria.
The function of mitochondria is to burn up
all of the calories we eat
and to produce energy. all
of our energy is made in
these little factories, each
about the size of bacterium. Cells that require a lot
of energy, such as muscle
Pat Frock- Personal Training
cells, have thousands of
mitochondria while others
that don’t need much energy ( such as fat cells) have
only a couple of hundred.
The more mitochondria we have the faster our
metabolism. One solution
to your sluggish metabolism is fairly simple, make
more mitochondria.
Unfortunately,
you
can’t get more of them by
eating them. Instead, we
need to get our bodies to
make more of them. There
is only one proven way to
make that happen, build
more muscle and exercise.
By building more muscle
and doing more exercise
we increase the number
of muscle cells as well as
increasing the number of
mitochondria in each cell.
Do this on a regular basis
and metabolism will improve tremendously.
To build muscle you
need resistance training
of some sort. I recommend concentrating on the
largest muscle groups as
found in the hips, thighs,
hamstrings an buttocks.
building into your program will go a long way
to increase those all important mitochondria.

The giggling, the
squirming, the twinkle in
their eye, these may be
characteristics for a child
opening his gifts at Christmas, but in this case, this
excitement comes from receiving a gift of a different
kind--a gift that will keep
giving throughout his lifetime.
This is a description
of a new Cub Scout about
ready to obtain his new
uniform. As he tries on
his new blue uniform shirt,
hat, and neckerchief he
stands tall, ready to begin
his new adventure.
At
the
Tecumseh
Council Scout Shop, many
young boys come in getting outfitted for Scouting. Little hands examine
the advancement badges
and pins as the young boy
wonders if he will be wearing those awards soon.
Why bother with the
expense of a uniform
some may wonder but Jim
Nolan, Scout Executive
for the Council writes, We
wear the uniform because
it is a means of identifying ourselves openly with
the principles to which we
are committed character
development, citizenship
training, and physical and
mental fitness. It is a way
of making visible our commitment to a belief in God,
loyalty to country, and to
helping other people.
To the little Cub getting started, it’s just Cool!
Because it makes them
feel like they belong to
something and this makes
him feel important.
The uniform is just the
beginning of a new Cub
Scouts experience providing a place on his shirt to
show all his accomplishments.
He is about to embark on a journey full of
educational activities all
wrapped up in fun.
By the time a boy
reaches the age of ten
years of old, he has been
introduced to camping, BB
Shooting, archery, knot tying, woodworking, sports,
and many field trips. Most
parents wouldn’t have had
a chance of doing these
activities with their sons if
it hadn’t had been for Cub
Scouts.
And what fun to experience it as a family along
with friends, too.
Cub Scouting prepares boys for Boy Scouts
and sets a foundation for
character
development,
spiritual growth, good citizenship, sportsmanship,
family relationships, and
friendly service which ultimately prepares them for

The SAD Facts Of Winter
Page C2 s The Springfield Paper s December 30, 2009
By James P. Perry, PhD
CEO of Mental Health
Services for Clark County
Depression around the
holidays can strip the joy
from what could be a celebratory time shared with
family and friends.
For some, a significant
loss or difficult circumstance brings about the
blues. For others, it happens for no apparent reason, causing them to won-
der why the holidays have
such an effect on their
lives.
The reality is that it
may not be the holidays at
all. It could be the body’s
reaction to reduced sunlight, especially if symptoms occur at a specific
time each year.
Known as Seasonal
Affective Disorder (SAD),
the most prevalent time
for winter SAD is December through February, although symptoms can begin as early as October and
last until spring arrives.
SAD can lead to severe
mood changes, heightened stress or deepening
depression.
Symptoms
can be intense and include
drastic changes in appe-
tite, cravings for sweets
or starchy foods, weight
gain, energy loss, fatigue,
oversleeping,
difficulty
concentrating, social withdrawal, increased irritability and anxiety, and loss of
interest in once enjoyable
activities.
Interesting to note is
that you are less likely to
experience SAD if you
live in a sun-rich state like
Florida than if you live in
Ohio, where shorter winter
days cause many people to
hibernate indoors.
Winter SAD is believed to be caused by a
biochemical
imbalance
that prompts a sun-hungry brain to produce more
melatonin, which has been
linked to depression. Light

Mrs. Mitchell arrived to Villa on November 9, 2008 after receiving a total knee
replacement. Upon her arrival she received physical and occupational therapy to
assist her with her activities of daily living, ambulating and balancing.
By Frank Miesse, Ph.D.
When Mrs. Mitchell began the program she needed moderate assistance with
ambulating, transferring and could only walk 10 feet.
She was discharged home with her husband on November 25, 2008 from Villa. At
that time she was able to independently transfer, and use a rolling walker to walk
much longer distances.
Georgia had this to say about her stay at Villa, “Everything went well after I got
here and figured out what it was all about.”
Congratulations Georgia!

actually purify the body
of fatty poisons. Licorice
root has been used by so
many to help overcome
the sugar craving because
of its natural concentrated
sweetness. It’s a good
stimulant to the liver to
cleanse the body of fat.
Red Clover often used
to curb the appetite and
give the body a natural
boost. Fenugreek regulates your pituitary gland
to control appetite and it’s
an excellent digestive aid.
Hawthorn Berries help
reduce both fatty and cholesterol deposits and tones
the heart. Dulse is a natural iodine and appetite

Fennel and Chickweed

Women Must Look To Each Other For Emotional Connection
FOCUS ON
THE FAMILY
Dr. James Dobson
QUESTION:
My
husband and I just moved
to Arizona from Pennsylvania, and I haven’t
established a network
of friends here yet. My
family is back east, and
I have no one but my
husband to talk to about
problems the kids are
having. He is very busy,
so all the “homework”
is left to me. How can I
deal with the feelings of
loneliness and isolation
as a mother?
DR. DOBSON: It is
vital that you build relationships with other women that can help satisfy the
needs for friendship and
emotional support. Failure
to do that places too great
a strain on the marital relationship, which can lead
to serious interpersonal
problems. I’m not saying
that your husband has no
responsibility to help you
get through this period of
loneliness, but unless he is
a very unusual man, he will
not be able to “carry” you
emotionally while earning
a living and handling the
other responsibilities of
living.
Therefore, I recommend that you seek out
women’s groups that are
designed to meet the needs
you described. Many
churches offer Bible study
groups and classes that put
women in touch with one
Are Noncompetition Agreements
Enforceable in Ohio?
Another one of those Laws You Can Use from
the Ohio State Bar Association
Q: After several years with the same company, I have
been told to sign a noncompete if I want to keep my job. Is
this legal?
A: Yes. Ohio law does not prevent employers from making noncompetes a mandatory condition of employment or
continued employment. Exceptions may exist, however, for
employees who are already covered by individual employment agreements or union contracts.
For “at-will” employees who can quit or be discharged
at any time for any reason, companies need not provide any
signing bonus or other benefits in exchange for a new noncompete agreement. Under a 2004 decision by the Supreme
Court of Ohio, the company’s agreement to continue the employment relationship for even a brief period is enough to
create a binding contract.
Q: What can happen if I violate the noncompete?
A: Your former employer can sue to keep you from
working in your new position or contacting customers for
the time period specified in the agreement. Additionally, the
lawsuit might seek money damages against you for violating
the agreement.
In practice, many noncompete disputes are resolved by
a negotiated settlement that is acceptable to the former employer, the employee, and the new employer. Depending
on the circumstances, your former employer might consider
a compromise that would protect its business interests and
avoid litigation.
Social Security Administration
another. Other possibilities are out there, such as
Mom’s Day Out. For mothers of school-age children,
there is a Christian ministry called Moms In Touch
International,
designed
to bring women together to pray for their local
school, its teachers, principal, school board, etc. It
“bonds” them together in a
common cause.
What I’m saying is
that you are not alone,
even in a new city. There
are other women out there
who need you as much as
you need them. You can
find each other with a little
effort. It is dangerous under the circumstances you
described to sit and wait
for the world to come to
your front door.
QUESTION:
What
can I do to help my middle
child figure out who she
is?
DR. DOBSON: Parents should take steps to
ensure the identity of all
their children but especially the child in the middle.
That can be accomplished
by relating to each boy or
girl as an individual, rather
than merely as a member
of the group. Let me offer
two suggestions that will
illustrate what I mean.
1. It is meaningful for
Dad to “date” each child,
one at a time, every four
or five weeks. The other
kids should not be told
where they are going until
it is revealed by the boy
or girl in retrospect. They
can play miniature golf,
go bowling, play basketball, eat tacos or pizza, or
visit a skating rink. The
choice should be made by
the child whose turn has
arrived.
2. Ask each offspring
to design his or her own
flag, which can be sewn in
Spiced Walnuts
(Makes about 1 pound)
• 8 tablespoons (1 stick), unsweetened butter
• 1 cup, light brown sugar
• 1 pound, walnut halves
• 2 tablespoons, ground cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon, ground cardamom
• 1/4 teaspoon, ground cloves
Directions:
In a medium heavy skillet, combine the butter
and sugar, and cook over medium-high heat until
the butter and sugar have melted, about 5 minutes. Add the cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves,
and cook, stirring, until the ingredients are well
blended, about 1 minute.
Add the walnuts, and cook, stirring to coat
them, for about 2 minutes. Reduce the heat to
medium, cover the skillet, and cook until the syrup is reduced, about 5 minutes. Remove the skillet from the burner, and allow the nuts to stand,
covered, until cool.

What are gift taxes?
SUMMARY...
The Money Matrix
Gift Taxes basically are taxes that supplement the
Estate Tax. Gift Taxes are placed on gifts given away to
any person while you are still living. You may give up
to $13,000 starting January 2009 in cash or assets to an
unlimited number of people each year without incurring
Gift Tax liability -- so long as there are no strings attached.
Married couples can give, as a couple, a $26,000 per year
to as many people as they want. If you give more than the
limit annually, the excess is applied toward your lifetime
gift-tax exclusion. If at any point the gifts you gave during your life or left in your estate exceed that exclusion,
you pay gift tax on the excess amounts over $1,000,000.
Of course, any gift transferred between spouses (where
both are US citizens) of any size is 100% Gift Tax-Free.
lateral to secure loans? Would
the money you put into it be
tax deductible? Would there
be a disability benefit on the
payments? Finally, would the
money you have transfer taxfree to your heirs?
You will discover when
creating the most perfect investment that the answers you
gave are far different than the
money and investments you
have right now. The types of
money that you have are far
from perfect.
One final question you
should ask yourself is: if given
a choice, would you want your
money to be fully taxed, partially taxed, or tax-free? While
this question really answers
itself, why is it that we ignore
what is logical and expose
most of our saving and investing efforts to full or partial
taxation?
Next week will be the conclusion to this exciting series

each other will experience

That’s just the way emotions operate. What, then,
will hold them steady as
feelings bounce all over
the landscape? The source
of constancy is a commitment of the will. You simply make up your mind
not to be blown off the
limb by fluctuating and
unreliable emotions.
QUESTION: Is it possible to love someone and
not feel it?
DR. DOBSON: It certainly is -- because love
is more than a feeling. It
is primarily a decision.
Married couples who misunderstand this point will
have serious problems
when the feeling of love
disappears for a time. Couples who genuinely love

Your answers to these
questions could be very eye
opening when it comes to how
your money works. If you had
the ability to create the perfect

would these questions be answered? Would there be a lot
