Constance E. Bushey, R.N., BSN, MEd
Director of the Beebe School of Nursing
Center, still remembers the first time she took care of a patient on a ventilator. It
was nearly six years ago when she was a student at Beebe School of Nursing.
“Oh my gosh. It was scary,” Ms. Walker recalls, adding that at the time she was
working closely with an instructor as part of her clinical education. She was also
learning how to care for three patients a day, something that would be considered easy by an experienced registered nurse in a hospital. “It was overwhelming
at the time. But I learned what to do.”
Ms. Walker attributes her success in nursing to the excellent program offered
by Beebe School of Nursing, as well as to her natural abilities. She passed her
boards the first time she took them and started her career as an ICU nurse in a

large hospital. Her family and love for Beebe Medical Center brought her back to
Beebe two years later.
More than 800 Beebe School of Nursing graduates over the years have gone
on to have nursing careers, both in Lewes and across the nation. The school is
a “hospital-based diploma program” that is the only one of its kind in Delaware.
It has a rigorous two-year program that offers education and theory in the classroom and hands-on, hospital experience. Graduates are eligible to sit for the
National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for registered nurses. Since
2000, Beebe’s NCLEX passing average is 95.1%, exceeding the mean of all other
nursing programs in Delaware by at least four percentage points. The school is
accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
and approved by the Delaware Board of Nursing. Beebe School of Nursing clearly
plays a critical role in preparing nurses to enter a national healthcare community
where nurses are desperately needed.
“We offer more clinical hours than other nursing programs,” says Constance E.
Bushey, R.N., BSN, MEd, Director of the Beebe School of Nursing. “We prepare
our graduates for entry into any area. They learn total patient care, how to organize the care for several patients at a time, how to work with doctors’ orders, and
how to give medications and assess patients.”
With the Medical Center so supportive of the school, students are able to get
exposure and education in several areas including Women’s Health, the Critical
Care Unit, the Operating Room, and the Same Day Surgery area. They learn about
the new technologies used in the Medical Center, as well as the quality standards
of care and how to work in an environment where life-saving decisions are an
everyday occurrence.
Graduate Ryan Brown, R.N., who
works in the dialysis lab at Beebe Medical
Center, says that part of the strength of
the program is how it gets the students
to use critical thinking, the same kind of
thinking that is expected on the licensure
exam and in the hospital.
Ms. Walker agrees. “You have to take
a test every week. And usually there are
two right answers and you have to choose
the one that is more right,” she says.
Mr. Brown says that students learn
“real nursing” at the school. “You get
one-on-one attention. You are able to get
to know the instructors and the doctors

The Nursing Shortage
As The United States experiences a shortage of nurses,
educated nurses face a bright future of opportunities.
• The national shortage of nurses in 2000 was
6 percent and has been projected to grow to
29 percent by 2020.
• The Delaware shortage of nurses in 2000 was
11 percent and has been projected to grow to
51 percent by 2020.
• By 2010, the United States is projected to have
a shortage of 1 million nurses.

at the hospital. I would recommend this program to anyone.”
Nina Hazzard, R.N., BSN, MS, explains that because the school is based at
Beebe Medical Center, it is able to keep up with what nurses need to know on a
day-to-day basis. This gives the instructors the ability to make sure that students
are honing the critical-thinking skills that it takes in the ever-changing and
demanding hospital environment.
“For example, the students are tested on the Joint Commission standards
because the nurses in the hospital have to know them.”
Mr. Brown says he also likes the program because students can earn a
bachelor’s degree in one additional year through an articulation agreement
with Wilmington University. “This program gives you an opportunity for
personal and professional growth.”
Graduate Laura Smith, R.N., BSN, took advantage of the articulation agreement and the tuition reimbursement program. “I’m currently working on a
master’s degree in nursing education at Wilmington University,” she says.
Mrs. Smith, the current president of the Beebe School of Nursing Alumni
Association, cares for Beebe Medical Center patients who are hospitalized
on the third floor. She also teaches part time at the Beebe School of Nursing.
“I love it. I enjoy working with students and I enjoy helping patients,”
Mrs. Smith says. Patients on the third floor include those who are recovering
from surgery or those who are suffering from illnesses.
Graduate Sara Walls, R.N., BSN, works in the Women’s Health Pavilion at
Beebe Medical Center. She also says that the Beebe School of Nursing gave her
an excellent foundation to work as a nurse. She recalls that by the time she graduated, she could insert a catheter, start an IV, give an injection, and comfortably
give care to hospitalized patients. She also passed the licensure examination
the first time she took it. “My instructors were wonderful. I really got a good
education.”
Ginny Rickards, R.N.,
BSN, MEd, Director of
Admissions, spends much
of her time talking to high
school students about the
many opportunities in the
nursing profession. While
Beebe graduates find a
welcoming job market,
those who want to attend
the school find that there
are many requirements
they have to meet first.
Instructor Tracy Bell, R.N., lectures her first-year students about cancer care.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Beebe School of Nursing admits qualified students contingent upon successful completion of the prerequisite college courses and a Nursing Assistant
course. For high school applicants, it is recommended that they submit
their applications in the fall of their senior year. For applicants who have
finished high school, or those with a GED, it is recommended that they
submit their applications as soon as possible, even before starting their
prerequisite courses. Applications may be submitted at any time during
the year. The application must be accompanied by a $30 non-refundable
fee and the signed Student Nurse Essential Functions form. Application forms

“I tell them that it is important, if they are truly
interested, to get their applications in, even if they
haven’t completed the prerequisites,” she explains.
“Also, we help facilitate the registration process for
the students who take their prerequisite classes at
the Delaware Technical and Community College
Owens Campus in Georgetown.”
The school has nine full-time and three part-time
instructors. Each class can have as many as 30 students. The school has a daytime program and is in
the process of beginning a three-year evening and
weekend program for those who want to keep a job
while they get their nursing education.
“It’s a great place to learn to be a nurse,” says
Ms. Walker. “But I will say, I had a very busy life for
two years. It was more than a full-time job.” n

Applicant Outcome
The Admissions Committee will review each application when all required
documents are received. All applicants will receive written notification
regarding admission status.
Applicants who are accepted into the program, to begin in the Fall of 2008,
must pay a $200 non-refundable fee by March 1, 2008, to reserve a place
on the list for the First-Year Nursing class. Class quota is filled on a firstcome, first-served basis that is determined by the date the application is
received and receipt of the registration fee by the due date. If class quota is
filled, payment of the registration fee places the applicant on a waiting list.

‘Tis the
Season
For coughs, fever, flu, and More
“Influenza kills 60,000 people in our country each year, and pneumonia kills 20,000 more.”
Dr. Scott Olewiler, Infectious Disease Physician
Pediatric patient C.J. Showell, 2 years old and recovering from pneumonia,
receives a breathing treatment from respiratory therapist Linda Kildeal, CRT.
6
Some call it “the flu season.” Others simply refer to it as “the damp and cold
winter months when it seems like I’m always catching something.”
Beebe Medical Center physicians warn us to take the season seriously.
Influenza and pneumonia kill, and respiratory illnesses can develop into
pneumonia, especially in the elderly and other high-risk populations.
“It’s a big mistake not to get vaccinated,” says Scott D. Olewiler, M.D., infectious disease physician at Beebe Medical Center. Dr. Olewiler says that the list of
people who should get the influenza vaccine is so long that it is easiest to advise
everyone to get it. “Influenza kills 60,000 people in our country each year, and
pneumonia kills 20,000 more. You weigh the benefits and risks, and unless you
have an anaphylactic allergic reaction to eggs, everyone should get the flu vaccine.” Dr. Olewiler notes that flu vaccinations have also been proven to lower
the overall incidence of respiratory illness, surprisingly even decreasing the
incidence of common colds, for unclear reasons. Pneumonia vaccine is more
specifically targeted to those over age 65 or who have certain medical conditions
such as heart or lung disease.”
Trina Clark, Director of Respiratory/Sleep/EKG Services at Beebe Medical
Center, says the hospital beds fill up in the winter months with patients suffering
from a variety of respiratory illnesses. “Our winters are so busy that we know we
have to bring on extra staff.”
A majority of those who are admitted are suffering from chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD refers to two lung diseases, chronic bronchitis
and emphysema. Since these conditions frequently coexist, physicians often use
the term COPD. These patients are advised to get flu vaccinations. According to
the American Lung Association, COPD is the fourth-leading cause of death in the
United States, and smoking is the primary risk factor. Other risk factors include
history of childhood respiratory infections and exposure to certain industrial
Primary care physician Dr. Steven H. Berkowitz, who practices in Rehoboth
Beach, counsels his patients to get their flu shots to help ward off respiratory
illness this winter.
pollutants. COPD is an important cause of the
hospitalization of the aging population, according
to the American Lung Association. This is one of
the reasons why smoking cessation programs are
so important at Beebe Medical Center and at other
medical institutions.
Flu season also can be dangerous for high-risk
babies who contract the respiratory syncytial virus
(RSV). While this virus is common in children and
adults, causing mild cold-like symptoms, it can be
life threatening to babies born prematurely or with
certain heart or lung problems. Sick babies brought
to the Emergency Department can be diagnosed for
RSV with a simple test. Beebe Medical Center admits
eight or nine of these babies each winter. “We give
round-the-clock breathing treatments for babies
with RSV,” Ms. Clark says.
While the flu season is considered to occur in
November and December, cases have been seen
locally as late as April. Elisa Montross-Lopez, M.D.,
Chief of Family Medicine at Beebe Medical Center,
advises people to use common sense to prevent
respiratory illnesses. She advises her patients to get
flu vaccinations, and if they are over the age of 65
to get pneumonia vaccinations. She advises those
with chronic respiratory illnesses to avoid crowded
areas and not to care for sick grandchildren. She also
urges people to go to the doctor if they have a cold
that doesn’t get better after three or four days, or
if they have a persistent fever.
Steven H. Berkowitz, D.O., a family practitioner
in the Rehoboth Beach area and a member of the
Beebe Medical Staff, says that people often do not go
to their doctor soon enough. “People come in and
say they’ve been sick a week, and that they hurt all
over,” he says. “They wait too long. They take overthe-counter medications and think they are saving
money. I wish they would just come in and see us.
That is what we are here for.”
Dr. Berkowitz says that with the chronically
ill, such as those with diabetes, heart problems, or
cancer, it is not unusual for him to admit them into
the hospital as soon as they come into his office.
Many of the patients that end up being admitted
are suffering from COPD. The major culprit that
sends these people to the hospital is smoking,
Dr. Berkowitz says.
“I plead with people to stop smoking,” he says.
“It makes colds worse. People would not get sick
so often if they didn’t smoke.” Dr. Berkowitz advises
people to wash their hands often and to dress appropriately for the winter weather. No shorts, please. n
“I plead with
people to stop smoking.
It makes colds worse.”

Beebe Medical Center is proud to be a not-forprofit, community hospital that can focus on meeting
the healthcare needs of the surrounding communities. In a day when so many of the nation’s hospitals
are part of large organizations with multilevel management structures serving vast, multifaceted populations, Beebe Medical Center is closely directed by a
single management team of healthcare professionals
who report to a board made up of members of the
local community.
And while there are some physicians on the
board and about a dozen physicians who are
hospital employees, the roughly 200 physicians and
more than 60 allied medical professionals on the
Beebe Medical Staff are independent professionals,
each with his or her own goals, concerns, and
responsibilities.
The single common goal that brings the hospital
and the private physicians together is the concern
for the health and well-being of people who live in
and visit eastern Sussex County.
“Our common goal is to provide the best care
possible to those in our community,” says Jose
Pando, M.D., a Lewes rheumatologist and President
of the Beebe Medical Staff.
The critical communication link between these
independent entities is the Medical Executive
Committee of the Beebe Medical Staff, made up of
18 physicians, three hospital executives including
the President/CEO, and two representatives from
the hospital Board of Directors, including the board
Chair. All of the physician members are elected and
serve alternating two-year terms on a voluntary basis.
There is a President, a President-Elect, a Secretary/
Treasurer, a Chief of Staff, and representatives from
each of the 11 medical departments: Anesthesiology,
Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice,
Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Pathology, Pediatrics, Radiation
Oncology, Radiology, and Surgery. The largest
departments, Medicine and Surgery, each have
two representatives on the committee.
The committee represents the Medical Staff,
advancing members’ causes and concerns, and creating a neutral arena where issues can be discussed
and challenges resolved, Dr. Pando explains.
The members deal with budgets, physician retention and recruitment, quality measures, new protocols, and strategic planning. The committee meets as
a whole each month, with department and specialty subcommittees such as
“bioethics,” “institutional review,” and “pharmacy & therapeutics” meeting
quarterly, or every other month.
“These doctors put in a significant amount of time,” Jeffrey M. Fried, President
& CEO of Beebe Medical Center, points out. “They all serve voluntarily, taking
time away from their practices, their homes, and their families to work to continually improve the quality of the healthcare we bring to the community. We are
fortunate to have doctors who are willing to engage in challenging Medical
Staff issues, many of which arise as a result of the increasing complexities of
our country’s healthcare system.”
Dr. Pando says that the committee reviews new programs that are being established at the hospital. He cites, as an example, the stroke initiative, which is developing a hospital-wide protocol that will meet national guidelines for stroke care.
Beebe Medical Center is a member of the National Stroke Association and is moving toward certification. At present, there is no certified stroke center in Delaware.
Each year, members of the Medical Executive Committee attend the strategic
planning retreat with hospital executives and board members, at which time longrange objectives and goals are set. These decisions are made with the input of
community demographics, regulatory changes, and medical needs assessments,
which, for example, revealed the need for the expansion of the Tunnell Cancer
Center, as well as the need for a larger medical facility in Lewes and an outpatient
facility in south coastal Delaware.
“It’s all about setting priorities,” Mr. Fried says, “and taking a collaborative
approach in making decisions.”
In order to improve communication, the Beebe Medical Center Board of
Directors approved a physician request that any member of the Medical Staff
may attend the annual strategic planning meeting held in January.
Other programmatic changes within the medical center that have come from
physician input include the development of the Hospitalist program, the expansion of the Physician Recruitment program, and the recently established Cardiac
Surgery program. The medical center is now providing financial assistance to
members of the Medical Staff, who are actively recruiting new physicians to our
community. While Sussex County is an attractive place to live, the predominance
of Medicare patients in our community makes the economics of recruiting and
retaining physicians more challenging than ever.
William Wenner, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs, says that the structure
of an independent hospital often has been described as a “three-legged stool.”
“You’ve got the management on one side and the Medical Staff on the other,
with the Board of Directors as the final decision-maker. It is a dynamic relationship in which each needs the other, and all need to work together for the longterm viability of the organization.” n
“Our common goal is to provide the best
care possible to those
in our community.”

Thank You
Your Giving Makes the Difference
Philanthropy is voluntary, and Beebe Medical Foundation is grateful for each person and
organization that chooses to support the medical center. We recognize that our donors
could choose to direct their giving to other worthy charities, and we appreciate each
person who gives to us. Every day, we are awed by the generous support we receive.
There are many reasons that a person may choose to support Beebe Medical
Foundation. Most frequently, people tell us they support the hospital because Beebe has
been there for them or a member of their family when they needed medical care. For many
people, that starts at birth, and we count many “Beebe Babies” among our donors and
friends. That care extends throughout the lives of those who live in the area.
Some former patients or their family members are moved
to give immediately after receiving care. For example, the
Foundation received a lovely letter in October with a gift of
$500 from a man who needed emergency care at Beebe
during his visit with friends in Rehoboth. He praised the care
of the Emergency Department physicians and staff, and the
nurses on the third floor where he was an inpatient.
Others wait their whole lives to express their gratitude.
One gentleman called this fall offering to make a gift from his
IRA—an opportunity that may not be available in 2008. He
spoke so highly of Beebe and the care he received—in 1950
when he was a teenager and suffered a terrible accident!
Financial support is critical to our ability to keep our
Alex Sydnor, Executive Director of
the Beebe Foundation
healthcare services the best that they can be, as well as
available to everyone in our community. This year we were fortunate to receive the final
gifts that completed the $3.4 million Tunnell Cancer Center campaign. The new cancer
center facility, which opened in October 2006, cares for hundreds of patients each month.
Donors also have helped to build a Healing Garden on the south end of the building,
have provided money for wigs and prosthetics, and have helped to purchase a piano
for the lobby.
If you’ve been to the Lewes campus this year, you are familiar with the ongoing expan-
sion of the Emergency Department and the addition of two floors of patient rooms. With
the growth in our community, increasing the size of the Emergency Department and adding
beds for patients admitted to the hospital is critical. This expansion would not have been
possible were it not for the hundreds of people who contributed more than $12 million to
the Vision 2005 campaign.
Whatever the motivation of our donors, we remain grateful for their generosity. Their
support—your support—makes our work possible. The following pages list the donors who
made gifts between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007. And to them we say “thank you”
for choosing to support Beebe.

Beebe Honor Roll of Donors
(7/1/2006 – 6/30/2007)
Beebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the sole
mission to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Medical Center.
Through the efforts of the Foundation, more than $25 million has been
raised to support new construction and renovation of medical facilities,
new and ongoing medical programs, and to establish an endowment fund
to ensure Beebe will always be available for this community.
As an independent not-for-profit organization, Beebe Medical Center relies
on the generosity of the many individuals, businesses, and foundations that
are listed in this Honor Roll of Donors.

Medical Foundation. The home was originally located at the current site of the clinical building.
Annual Fund
The Beebe Annual Fund is one of the most important sources of funds for the medical center. Unrestricted and restricted funds contributed through the Annual Fund support ongoing operations and make possible various community
programs that otherwise would not be sustainable. The chairpersons of the fiscal
year 2007 Annual Fund were Jim and Sarah Brady.

Annual Holiday of Lights Tree Lighting
Marking the beginning of the holiday season, this annual event is an opportunity
to remember or honor family members and friends. Lights are placed on a tree on
the lawn of the medical center as a sign of this remembrance at the beginning of
the holiday season. The 2006 Holiday of Lights proceeds benefited Beebe Medical
Center’s Family Life Program.

Jean & Joan Fund Golf Tournament
The Jean & Joan Fund was established in the memory of Jean James and Joan
Martin, two outstanding women who lost their valiant battle with cancer. During their final months, both women were surrounded by families that loved
and cared for them and a circle of friends who generously gave their time and
support.
It is most important that people going through these trying times receive all the
physical and spiritual support available. The goal of the Jean & Joan Fund is to
assist the Tunnell Cancer Center in providing care and comfort for patients. The
fund has supported the establishment of the Jean & Joan Education Room at the
Tunnell Cancer Center, purchased a van for the transport of patients to and from
their treatments, and in 2007 funded the building of the enclosure for the Tunnell Cancer Center Healing Garden.
The 2006 Golf Tournament raised $30,000, bringing the total Jean & Joan Fund contributions since its inception to $192,000.

“Progress for Prostate” Charity Golf Tournament
Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club’s “Progress for Prostate” Charity Golf
Tournament was established in 2004 by a group of individuals who wanted to
focus attention on prostate cancer and the importance of early detection. Early
detection is the key to combating this disease that takes the lives of over 30,000
men each year.
In the last four years this tournament has raised $82,000 to help Beebe Medical
Center provide free prostate screenings and community awareness programs. This year, with funds raised by the tournament, a community outreach van was
purchased to bring these important programs to the community.

“classic at baywood” charity golf tournament
The Classic at Baywood Greens Golf Tournament was established by a committee
of individuals dedicated to community service. In 2007 the Classic at Baywood
Greens Committee partnered with local sponsors to benefit the Tunnell Cancer
Center Capital Campaign. The Tunnell Cancer Center Capital Campaign will allow
expanded comprehensive cancer care services. From diagnosis through treatment
and beyond, patients at the Center are never alone. It is the goal of the Baywood
Classic to assist the Tunnell Cancer Center as they provide both hope and wellness
to cancer patients. The committee greatly appreciates the local sponsor support.
The 2007 Golf Tournament raised $25,000 to assist Beebe Medical Center in providing both hope and wellness to cancer patients and their families.
